Suitably Flip takes note of how Barack Obama’s position on Iraq has changed over the past few years, and what his explanation for that change is.

Gee, how many times has the rationale for invading Iraq changed?
As the failure of Bush’s invasion and occupation unfolded, there is nothing wrong with changing one’s opinion on the whole thing.

Obama’s not claiming his opinion has changed (in fact, he’s adamant that it hasn’t). He’s acknowledging that he misrepresented that opinion in 2004 and defending the misrepresentation by noting it was in his political interest.

As Matt correctly identifies, it’s Obama’s *position* that has changed, not his opinion. There is something wrong with changing a position based on a change not of opinion, but of prevailing political winds.

The rationale for invading Iraq has never changed, what has changed is that the information that supported the rationale was incorrect.
Then the question became what do we now do about Iraq.. For Democrats that was easy.. leave Iraq.
For others they believed that the US had the responsibility to stay and help the people of Iraq.
