Democrats Get Most Cold Dead Cash

December 1st, 2007 at 01:01am Matt Margolis

Ian Schwartz brought my attention to this story, which shows that dead people are still making political contributions… and a majority of those contributions from deceased is going toward Democrats and their committees.

“The Democratic committee received the most campaign money from deceased donors, nearly $225,000, according to USA TODAY’s tally of federal campaign-finance data compiled by CQ MoneyLine, a non-partisan group. The Republican National Committee was the second-largest recipient, with about $93,000.”

I guess that more of the GOP contributers decided to take it with them.

I think the GOP contributors left the money with their unaborted children.

Do you think this has anything to do with those phone people? They been trying to get my wifes deceased Grandmother on the phone for 12 years now.

Is this a fundamental flaw in the system do you think?

My husband and I often discussed supporting the next Republican candidate, and several local candidates, rather than donating to the RNC, which we thought was a mess. Does this mean I can still donate in his name?

    Verrrrry interesting…………

Casper, this means that aside from a few instances, such as the one I discuss above, Republicans do not try to make illegal campaign contributions by pretending that dead people really intended to make them anyway.

Not nearly as many dead people vote for Republicans, either.

Yeah, js, I would call this a fundamental flaw. And as for being able to claim that the deceased WOULD have donated this money if still alive, that kind of reminds me of the crystal ball efforts in the Florida recounts, with people trying to determine the INTENT of people who were too stupid or too lazy or too indifferent to even mark a ballot properly.

Speaking of funny contributions, what is the updated info on your FEC complaint against her thighness? Have they responded? When is the deadline for their response?

    Almiranta,
If you read the original story you will see that no laws were broken. People do sometimes make interesting final requests.

lol, neocon, and Cassper, note the proper spelling of “contributor.” You’re a teacher, so please try setting a good example…

Casper, I did read the article, and aside from one specific reference to one specific woman who left money to the Democrat Party IN HER WILL, there is no reference to the legal instrument by which money is donated by dead people.

If a person’s last will and testament clearly states that a bequest be made to anything, be it a political party or an animal shelter or a home for retired Deadheads, then that bequest must be honored.

The story does not make it clear that all the money donated in the names of the departed comes from offical bequests in official wills. Rather, it says that they just need to be sure that was the intent of the deceased, and my question is, how can they “be sure”?

Therefore, my questions. Can I just claim that this was my husband’s intent? How much interpretation is involved? Who makes the final decision?

If, as you claim, no laws were broken, who decided that the contributions really did reflect the wishes of the departed? How? Based on what?

In other words, given the sketchy information in the story, this could be just another campaign finance scam—a possibility heightened by the proportion of contributions received by Dems.
