Witness Backs Up Romney’s MLK Assertion

December 22nd, 2007 at 05:19pm Mark Noonan

From Politico:

Shirley Basore, 72, says she was sitting in the hairdresser’s chair in wealthy Grosse Pointe, Mich., back in 1963 when a rumpus started and she discovered that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and her governor, George Romney, were marching for civil rights — right past the window.

With the cape still around her neck, Basore went outside and joined the parade.

“They were hand in hand,” recalled Basore, a former high-school English teacher. “They led the march. We all swung our hands, and they held their hands up above everybody else’s.”

She remembered the late governor as “extremely handsome.”

Until this week, that was just a vivid memory for a sweet retiree who now lives in Pompano Beach, Fla.

But Basore’s memory became important this week when news accounts questioned the recollections of the late Michigan governor’s son, Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts governor.

As for whether Mitt Romney attended - it was in 1963; you know, 44 years ago. Some memories dim, others get altered by later events. As for me, if Mitt Romney says he was there, then that is good enough for me unless someone comes up with absolute, stand-up-in-court proof that he was elsewhere that day. And if someone finds such proof? Then it still wouldn’t matter too much - I’m 43 and I have memories of 30 years or so ago…and while I’m sure in my mind that this, that or the other event happened a certain way, I can’t be 100% about anything that long ago absent other documentary evidence to completely confirm it all.

A 72 year old women’s and Mitt Romney’s 44 year old memory you believe, and the Swift-boaters non of whom served with Kerry you believe, but John Kerry and his entire crew who were there are nothing but liars. Sheeeeese, I may never understand how the Republican brain works. It simply defies logic

    plain,

Why should I work from the assumption that Romney is lying? Do you have any indicators that Romney lies on a regular basis? If you don’t, then to assume that he’s not telling the truth about witnessing his father marching with MLK is slander on your part. I tend to take a more generous view of my fellow human beings than you do, I guess.

As for Kerry - I never doubted his story, until clear evidence came up casting doubt upon it. Have I, however, made any definitive statement on the either the veracity of his critics or Kerry’s assertions? I don’t believe I have - so your example is, well, rather foolish.

well, Romney has now said that he never saw his father march with MLK, and the historical facts also suggest that it never happened with him watching or not. So he lied. And George Bush lied and concealed things during his presidential campaign. And look at the horrible government (executive, especially) we have today and the cover ups, etc. So, elect Romney for more of the same.

    plainjane,

“Swiftboaters”??? There is a one million dollar reward if you can disprove one point in the swift boat ads. one point, any point. Don’t you want it? Couldn’t some political campaig on the left use a million bucks?

I don’t see the point in brining it up or defending those ads anymore. If you can point to ONE fact thats wrong, then that million dollars would be in your bank account. That’s all the proof I need to demonstrate that your talking out your ass.

I find that people throw around accusations of “lying” very easily these days. This is really sad.

    kahn,

plainjane is nothing more than walking talking point. No matter how strongly refuted her assertions are, she’ll simply “rinse and repeat”.

It is fact, the Texas Trash known as Pickens has reneged on the bet and said you now have to produce just about all of Kerry’s records since birth in order to collect. I thought in the world of cowboy diplomacy a man’s word meant something.

    Plain

    kerry is LIAR, a COWARD,
    and….. a TRAITOR!
the “swiftboaters” only pointed out the truth.

1.He is a LIAR- because he lied under oath in front of congress of atrocities that NEVER HAPPENED!
    2. He is a COWARD because he himself, put in for THREE Purple Hearts that were not warranted, then used these as a ” get out of dodge” free ticket home.
    3. He is a TRAITOR because while still an active serviceman he met, and consorted with the enemy on foreign soil.

Other than that he is a gigolo GOLD DIGGING IDIOT,
BUT BY THE rat STANDARD AN ALL AROUND- GOOD GUY.

I think Huck and Mitt would win in a landslide over the dems, the dems put out the worst candidates they have. My state has better democrats than what is on the ballot. I don’t think they wanna win with candidates as bad as the ones they put out.

    FmrMarine,

There are some simple facts that nobody can dispute. Regardless of any thoughts or feelings in Senator Kerry’s head at any moment in time, the facts are that:

    1) Senator Kerry volunteered to join the United States Navy Reserve in 1966 and went on active duty that same year.

    2) In 1968 he was detached from his assignment aboard the USS Gridley (DLG-21) and sent to Patrol Craft (Fast) training at his request so that he could serve in Vietnam.

    3) On 12/2/68, 2/20/69 and 03/13/69 he was in combat. On 02/28/69 he was in combat.

    4) In fact, he was serving in a combat position in Vietnam at his own request and thereby was in a position to be killed or permanently maimed as a result of his voluntary service independently of his thoughts and feelings. His body was there.

    5) President George W. Bush could have volunteered to serve in the active duty military, as did Senator Kerry, but chose not to volunteer for such service. President George W. Bush could have volunteered to serve in Vietnam, as did Senator Kerry, but chose not to volunteer for such service. President George W. Bush, when he attended drills, only served in the Texas Air National Guard which did not involve any service in a combat theater.

Your hysterical claim that Senator Kerry is a “coward”, especially laid side-by-side with President Bush’s service record would quietly sink below the surface of the Mekong River if someone tried to float it there.

Have I, however, made any definitive statement on the either the veracity of his critics or Kerry’s assertions? I don’t believe I have - so your example is, well, rather foolish.

You sure have–you have repeatedly (and hilariously) claimed that “swiftboating” means “telling unscotchable truth,” which is to say that you think that particular group of Kerry’s critics is absolutely 100 percent correct (they aren’t, of course, as has been demonstrated to you countless times, but nobody expects you to actually acknowledge your error–that would be un-Republican!). So your lamebrained defense is, well, rather foolish.

I love that you admit that even if Mitt gets proven to be a liar, it doesn’t matter to you. IOKIYAR, eh Marky? Suddenly, you’re kind of into vain, effete, rich flip-floppers from Massachusetts.
