Do We All Become McCainiacs, Now? Open Thread: GOP Debate

Rudy Out. Edwards Out.

January 30th, 2008 at 12:50pm Matt Margolis

It was inevitable… Rudy is going to dropout, and likely endorse John McCain. (Mike Huckabee ought to dropout too, but last night he appeared committed to pressing on.)

John Edwards is dropping out, however, he has not made any immediate endorsement. This, I find interesting. In 2004, Edwards reportedly begged John Kerry to make him his running mate. With a brutal and tight race ahead between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, Edwards is in an interesting position. His endorsement might actually be important at this point. The question is, who will he endorse, and why? I suspect that his endorsement will only come on the condition that he be the candidate’s running mate in the general election. What does he have to lose? He’s a one-term Senator who couldn’t even win his home state for John Kerry in 2004, or his state’s primary this year.

The way I see it, Edwards’ best bet is to endorse Hillary Clinton. An Obama-Edwards ticket just doesn’t seem likely… Two Senators who ran for the presidency before their first terms as U.S. Senators were even finished on the same ticket? Don’t count on it. If Edwards wants to ride anyone’s coattails into the general election, he’d probably see Hillary as his best bet. She at least waited a few seconds after winning reelection to the Senate to declare her candidacy for the presidency.

this makes him a two time loser, no?

what makes him think anyone wants him on thier side?

just to mention, obama and billary on one ticket would be a wild fight

  • 2. Joe  |  January 30th, 2008 at 1:05 pm

A lot of core Dems wanted Edwards. I wanted Edwards in 2004 as well.
Unfortunately he was just going up against the enormous stories and media circus of Hillary and Obama. Edwards couldn’t get enough media buzz for his campaign.
I was going to vote for him Feb 5th. I will now be voting for Obama.

Rudy on the other hand… what the hell was he thinking not competing until Florida?? Who could have possibly suggested that this was a good idea??? Has there ever been a candidate that has taken such a nosedive in a matter of months?

Now that Edwards and Giuliani are out, it’s time to see what the blogosphere thinks of the 6 remaining candidates, using the superior Range Voting system, detailed in William Poundstone’s Gaming the Vote

If you consider 15% a lot, then, yeah, I guess so. It didn’t surprise me, though, that you were for him, Joe.

    Democratic runningmates, hmmm… let’s see…
Obviously Obama and Clinton aren’t going to pick each other. And I don’t see Edwards helping either one of them, either.

Generally speaking, I think Bill Richardson would be a good compliment for Obama. He’s strong everywhere Obama is weak. And Richardson is weak in places where Obama is strong — which is basically to say communication skills. Richardson is terrible in that regard. Heck, if he could talk like Obama, I suspect he’d be the odds-on favorite for the Dem nomination now. I also think Jim Webb would be a good choice for Obama, too. Maybe even Clinton. But if Clinton gets the nod I suspect she may seriously consider Wesley Clark.

Rudy. Three time loser. Gangster friends. Never could say anything but 9/11. Sounded like a damn parrot. No vision for the future. No reason to vote for him.

Now he can go back to the country club set and give speeches for $500K/night.

    Bye bye.

  • 7. Joe  |  January 30th, 2008 at 2:01 pm

I would love to see Wesley Clark in any administration. I’d love to see Richardson in any administration (he was my original choice right off the bat).

Spook, thanks for that vote of confidence.

  • 8. Retired Spook  |  January 30th, 2008 at 2:11 pm

I would love to see Wesley Clark in any administration.

Geez, Joe, why does that not surprise me — sigh.

I also think Jim Webb would be a good choice for Obama, too.

Yeah, Rico, ol’ six-gun Jim could be both VP and bodyguard at the same time — save the taxpayers a little money.

This event satisfies my minimal desires; Anyone but Edwards… and yes that includes Hillary. Edwards is the lowest, lyingest most cynical cur known to modern American politics. And that, friends and foes, is saying something indeed. This pirate is single-handedly responsible for the lack of OB/GYN care in his state and region. Did he do it for “the little guy”? What a joke! He did it for the money, people. For the money. And he lives the life of the grillionaire laughing at you stooges who lap up his fantasies. Gullible Democrats disgraced themselves mightily giving this man too fraudulent for Kerry a route to the highest office. But he is far from out of our hair. If indeed he becomes AG; just grab your ass.

    Spook,
You are a funny guy. Another great comeback. You should do standup.

ol’ six-gun Jim could be both VP and bodyguard
Is there ever a time when you don’t just call someone names? Is that the best you could come up with against Webb? If so, that is pretty lame.

  • 11. Retired Spook  |  January 30th, 2008 at 2:56 pm

Hey, megapotamus, long time no see. How the hell ya been?

Is there ever a time when you don’t just call someone names?

Ya got me there, Joe. I don’t know for certain that it was a “six-gun” that Senator Webb tried to have an aid smuggle into the Capital Building. It could have been a semi-auto. Ol’ Glock-Webb just doesn’t have the same ring to it, though.

  • 12. Retired Spook  |  January 30th, 2008 at 2:57 pm

Hey, Joe, how about “Jesse” James Webb? Is that better?

  • 13. Joe  |  January 30th, 2008 at 3:07 pm

    It is better. Thank you.

But… the point is more that you find this one minor thing and claim that Webb is no good. Must be nice to be so perfect.

Spook: Yeah, Rico, ol’ six-gun Jim could be both VP and bodyguard at the same time — save the taxpayers a little money.

    Sounds good to me. Lol!

Then again, maybe John Hostettler would be a better choice — he does his own “gun smuggling”. Lol!

  • 16. Concerned Citizen  |  January 30th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

I doubt seriously Obama will pick Clinton or visa versa. The Clinton Machine has taken some strong hits in the past week from within their own party. Clinton to Obama would be a liability, nothing more.

On the Republican side, there are rumors that McCain would give Hucabee the nod if he wins the nomination. Not much word on who Romney would pick. I would love to see a Romney / Thompson ticket, but I doubt very much that is likely.

  • 17. Retired Spook  |  January 30th, 2008 at 4:31 pm

But… the point is more that you find this one minor thing and claim that Webb is no good.

Joe, Joe, Joe; you jump to erroneous conclusions faster than anyone I’ve ever seen. Where did I ever “claim that Webb is no good”? I don’t care if you agree or disagree with me, but don’t put words in my mouth. And, as far as being “perfect”, my wife would most certainly disagree with you.

Rico, yeah, IIRC, Hostettler (a fellow Hoosier) tried to board a flight from Louisville to DC with a loaded Glock 9mm in his carry on bag. Not cool.

  • 18. Bane of Liberals' Existence  |  January 30th, 2008 at 4:35 pm

    megapotamus,
    Welcome back, we missed ya’!

C’mon tho’ John “Silky Pony” Edwards was for the little guy; just ask him. He was there for the dead children, (he wouldn’t take the client if still alive; only the families of deceased children), he was there for the Unions. Personally, I’m going to miss the mill, and all the (mill) stories (mill) John was able to (mill) work into (mill) every conversation (mill).

Attorney General Breck-girl? Parish the thought!

  • 19. Retired Spook  |  January 30th, 2008 at 5:11 pm

Come on now, Bane. Edwards was Joe’s main man. Now Joe’s gonna have to sacrifice his principles and vote for Obama.

  • 20. Rich  |  January 30th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

Wait are you guys talking about the Jim Webb that gave the rebuttal to the SOTU last year and said the surge would not work? I that the Jim Webb you are talking about?

  • 21. js  |  January 30th, 2008 at 5:35 pm

McCain would actually be smarter to snag Thompson for his running mate. It would cinch up the conservatives no problem.

You just gotta get Thompson talking, he has some really good stuff.

  • 22. David.B.Schmidt  |  January 30th, 2008 at 6:05 pm

IMHO, I am sure Senator Obama is a smart enough man to not take Senator Clinton on as VP. The other way around could happen; however, with her goal is to take us to socialism–he would be nothing more than a stepping stone in Ft. Marcy Park on her rise to the Presidency.

Maybe more like JFK than he would like become.

  • 23. Brian  |  January 30th, 2008 at 6:09 pm

If the Donks choose Hillary, there will be no need for McCain to choose Thompson.

The conservatives need no other incentive to come out and vote.

  • 24. Kahn  |  January 30th, 2008 at 6:09 pm

    Rich,

Right. The same guy who ignored Democrat imposed gun restrictions and who wouldn’t publicly admit that his aid was carrying his gun when arrested entering the Capital. oh, he DID admit it later.

I guess that Navy Cross was a lonnnngggg time ago. Funny, he is actually a pretty damn authentic war hero. The Marine Corps doesn’t hand out crosses very easily.

  • 25. Brian Gregory  |  January 30th, 2008 at 6:11 pm

McCain-Thompson…interesting. I’d actually never thought of anything but McCain-Huckabee…seems like Thompson would do the trick, too. Unfortunately, I doubt he’s interested in running for VP. Regardless, go Johnny, go!

  • 26. NeoClown  |  January 30th, 2008 at 6:41 pm

    Poor Rudy,

The realities of national politics have collided with the shining tower that was the Giuliani campaign.
Rudy’s presidential aspirations have collapsed and been reduced to a pile of smoldering ruins.
Let’s observe a moment of silence for those who bravely gave 50 million dollars so Rudy could buy a delegate.

  • 27. FmrMarine  |  January 30th, 2008 at 7:04 pm

“If the Donks choose Hillary, there will be no need for McCain to choose Thompson.”

“The conservatives need no other incentive to come out and vote.”

    UMMMMM
    Dont count on it.
mcLame is a true rino who has really really ticked off many CONSERVATIVES!
Many will sit this one out if he wins.

  • 28. Rich  |  January 30th, 2008 at 8:51 pm

FmrMarine- Those people that sit out will join the smug ranks of Nader 2000 supporters. That sense of self satisfaction and a fifty cents wont buy you a cup of coffee. Go ahead and sit out, and then don’t say zip for the next 8 years of a Clinton presidency with a super-majority in the house and senate. Also say hello to 2-3 supreme court justices that make Bader-Ginsburg look like Ronald Reagan. McCain is as much as a conservative as you’re gonna get in this environment so you better take it. Or you can take your ball and go home.

  • 29. Anti Hillary  |  January 30th, 2008 at 8:52 pm

My gut feeling is I don’t like the looks of this. This is the first time perhaps that I can remember that I’m not excited about any of the Republican candidates. I think we really needed Rudy in there…but maybe if he is the VP that will help. But, my guess is that it will be McCain/Romney.

I think pretty soon Bloomberg is gonna come out of the woodwork and pull a Perot.

This is going to be yet another depressing political season.

    Anyone but hellary!

  • 30. TiredofLibBullShit  |  January 31st, 2008 at 11:44 am

Why would anyone choose Hillary as a VP?

He would have to look over his shoulder constantly.
