Huckabee’s Time of Choosing
February 13th, 2008 at 12:58am Mark Noonan
From Real Clear Politics:
9:25PM - Via ABC News, a statement from McCain communication director Jill Hazelbaker: “After tonight it is mathematically impossible for Governor Huckabee to secure the nomination. With regard to VA, Of course we’d like to win every race by wide margins, but we are accumulating the delegates we need to become the Republican nominee. Going forward, we will continue to work to unite the Republican party to defeat a liberal Democrat in November.”
Translation: If Huckabee wants to remain in McCain’s good graces, get out. - BLAKE DVORAK
Yeah, that’s how I read it, too. And in all honesty, Huckabee’s continued campaign now has no point and the only thing it could possibly do is weaken McCain for the fall campaign - and if Huckabee thinks the GOP electorate will reward spoiling with a future nomination, then he just doesn’t understand the dynamics of GOP politics. Now - or, at latest, a week from now - is the chance for Huckabee to retire from the scene gracefully. He fought a good fight on a shoestring, but it didn’t work out - better luck in the future (and stay away from Hagee’s church!).
UPDATE, by Matt Margolis: Huckabee, please drop out now.

I like Huckabee’s agenda more than Mr. McCain’s.
So, Huck, you just keep givin’ ol’ John a run for his money.

Gov. Huckabee needs to read the writing on the wall and get out. As Mitt Romney said at the conference, continuing a primary battle only delays the inevitable and helps the Democrats. This is important because, as the Rasmussen and Gallup polls show today, McCain is vitually tied with Obama and leads Clinton (McCain-40%- Obama-44%). With all of the fawning press coverage Obama has gotten, McCain is virtually tied. Let’s get this campaign going to win in November and stop worrying about egos. Let’s get this going and stop nit-picking at McCain’s record. Somebody has to pick the next 2-4 Supreme Court Justices. I will take the guy who voted for Bork, Roberts, and Alito. One more thing, to all of the purists out there, Al Qaeda has a preference in this election. It isnt that the Democrats are on Al Qaeda’s side, but AQ is on theirs. Anybody who wants to win this war on terror will vote for McCain.

Governor Huckabee has every right to run. If McCain can’t handle a little competition to the WH, let him drop out. And by the way, why hasn’t McCain demanded that Calderon leave the USA and take his illegals with him? Why hasn’t McCain demanded that Bush NOT give Calderon any money? McCain took a pledge to stand with the US citizens on border security, where is it? Why hasn’t Huckabee told Bush to throw the Merida Initiative in the garbage? Talk about gutless candidates!

I guess my vote yesterday wasn’t enough to get Romney over the top.
Oh well, 1996 all over again…

Here’s a possible scenario: if Huckabee doesn’t drop out shortly after the March 4th primaries, Romney officially quits the race and hands his delegates to McCain(probably for some favor for Romney later on, like giving a speech at the convention). This would result in McCain getting more than the minimum 1191 delegates necessary for the nomination and Huckabee quitting. This way Romney can say that he helped McCain win quickly plus stick it to Huckabee(the 2 don’t like each other, even more than McCain and Romney). This would also prevent this Huckabee hope for miracles going on in April, May, etc’

Here’s an option. Huckabee quits the race, Romney unsuspends his campaign, Republicans swarm to Romney and McCain doesn’t get nominated.

Huckabee is squandering a big GOP advantage by dragging this on further, when it is impossible for him to win. If he doesn’t leave the race now, he should just leave the party altogether.
And who are the idiots still voting for this guy? Do they actually WANT to lose in November?

Doug, your comment about Romney is in line with Romney as a flip flopper. Romney saying that it is ‘time to quit and back the front runner’, and then by returning to the race producing another flip flop. So if he wants to continue flip flopping, he is welcome back.
Realistically, I can only see Romney “coming back” only as a king maker, to give McCain his 286 delegates and to remove Huckabee from the race, as I said above.
