Box Cutter in a Hollowed-Out Book
February 21st, 2008 at 02:08pm Mark Noonan
The threat is still out there, and very real:
TAMPA - A 21-year-old Clearwater man was arrested at Tampa International Airport this weekend after security personnel found a box cutter in a hollowed-out book, authorities said.
If convicted, Baines faces up to 10 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine for a federal charge of attempting to board an airplane with a concealed dangerous weapon. He is currently serving a 30 day sentence after pleading guilty Monday to a state misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed weapon.
About 7:30 a.m. Sunday, airport security ran Benjamin Baines Jr.’s backpack through an X-ray machine and saw the image of a box cutter, according to a report from the Transportation Security Administration.
When searching the backpack, a security officer found a book titled “Fear Itself.” The book was hollowed out, and the box cutter was inside.
After Baines was read his rights, he said his cousin had cut away the pages to make the hollow section in the book. Later, reports state, he said he had hollowed it out himself to hide money and marijuana from his roommates.
Baines told officers he was moving to Las Vegas and forgot the cutter was in the book.
Officers found books in the backpack titled “Muhammad in the Bible,” “The Prophet’s Prayer” and “The Noble Qur’an.” He also had a copy of the Quran and the Bible.
Several sheets of paper in the backpack included rap lyrics that referred to police, narcotics, weapons and killing. Baines told officers he is a rapper who writes his own lyrics and that rap music writers need to “play the part,” the report states.
Officers performed a background check and found no record of crimes or active warrants.
No criminal record and brings a concealed weapon to the airport…in 2008, when 9/11 has already happened and everyone on God’s earth knows full well that you cannot bring a box cutter on a plane. Very strange - was this a dry run to test security, or are we just dealing with one of the bigger idiots at large in America today?

I dunno Mark, I think you might be underestimating the scale of the idiocy pool. I doubt this guy is near the top. He’s at least on a par with Star Simpson (she of “it looks like a bomb but it’s art” fame) though and that does make him a pretty good sized mOron.

This is more evidence that the “War on Terror” is a complete joke.
You can never route out every individual who chooses to do harm to people and property.
Terrorism is a tactic that desperate people employ to achieve political or economic ends.
Murdering doctors who perform abortions, beating up and killing homosexuals and attempts to turn this country into a theocracy are all examples of terrorism.
There is no way to eliminate terrorism from the Earth as long as humans live on it.
9. JD | February 21st, 2008 at 6:29 pm
Thank God the Florida terrorist was stopped. We all know what a horrible weapon a box cutter can be. He probably hates US for our Disney World.

Murdering doctors?? and all along, I thought they were………..ABORTED !
JD - one with minimum skills could cut your, or a pilots throat, with one swipe of a box cutter. I rather face a knife with a 4″ blade than a RAZOR knife.
You may make light of it but it is a formidable weapon in the wrong hands

Oh my God, the threat is out there and it’s real! Some moron tried — and FAILED — to smuggle a box cutter on a plane. We have to bomb Iran right now! We have to start spying on all American citizens right now! We have to eliminate the Bill of Rights, right now! We can never be too safe! Scary brown men are out there! Help me hide under the bed!!!!!
Yup, right-wingers. They’re the real men.

The TSA agents should be commended for doing a great job.
Before I became a cop, I worked as a deputy sheriff at a court house. Some people were very ingenious in their attempt to smuggle weapons. Some were smart enough to fashion knives out of non-metal objects like bone or plexiglas, but I caught them in the pat down search. These were mostly gang members out to intimidate a witness.

Hey, Lefties—we already know you think your lame efforts at any kind of humor are futile—you don’t need to keep pretending that you are witty, or have anything of value to say. This has to be the lamest collection of sophomoric non-comments you have been able to collectively come up with in a long time.
Yes, box cutters can be deadly. Most of us know this—but then we have attention spans of more than a few days, and references more complex than Airhead America.
But more to the point, the choice of this particular weapon is telling. This wacko was obviously trying to emulate his heroes, who are, evidently, the terrorists who parlayed a few box cutters into the deaths of thousands.
If one could possibly pretend that Obama2008, for example, makes the slightest bit of sense, one would have to believe that as we can’t possibly catch all drunken drivers we shouldn’t even try, or as some people will be able to steal from stores we should just stop trying to provide security against shoplifing.
But the Doofus of the Day, that selfsame Obama (who, I think, probably reflects the IQ of most of his fellow Obama cultists) actually stumbles on something that, while in and of itself is wildly inaccurate, does kind of approach a truth. He whines “…attempts to turn this country into a theocracy …..example(s) of terrorism.”
Of COURSE “attempts to turn this country into a theocracy” is not an example of terrorism. That is one of the most profoundly stupid comments ever made, even given Obama’s body of work. But the METHODS used by radical Islam to turn this country, and all others, into a theocracy, ARE examples of terrorism.
But somehow I think that O’s rant was just an example of his irrational loathing for those whose religion is based on belief in God rather than Socialism.

>>Murdering doctors who perform abortions, - Adrian<<
Are you pro-life?
And I really can’t believe the lefties are downplaying a box cutter, which happened to be the weapon of choice of the 9/11 terrorists, couple that with the presence of the Koran and the Prophets Prayer and it just doesn’t take a rocket scientist to put all that together. But even that eludes them.
They are the dumbest on the planet.
18. Max Power | February 21st, 2008 at 11:06 pm
We should immediately throw down our freedoms and bow down to our box cutter wielding masters.
Calling you guys cowards would be charitable.
19. Almiranta | February 21st, 2008 at 11:50 pm
Max seems interested only in the “freedoms” which allow his kind to confiscate the private property of others, in the kind that limits freedom of speech on college campuses and freedom to worship as one chooses, in the kind that eliminates the freedom to actually be born and live—but he sure can emote about the freedom to carry weapons onto public transport.
Typical knee-jerk Lefty. And he makes about as much sense as we have come to expect from that ilk.
And have you noticed how those who toss around the word “coward” are the same who whinge at the very thought of protecting our borders, our freedoms, our very lives, and instead are the appeasers, the surrenderers, the “negotiators”?

21. Dennis | February 22nd, 2008 at 1:56 am
Box cutter, whatever. A bic pen can be used very effectively to kill someone, if you know how. It doesn’t take much physical strength and it can be done almost instantly. A shoestring will do, although it takes a little longer. Martial arts have been around a long time, and have adapted to modern culture very well.
So when will be begin banning ball point pens, or shoestrings?
Soon we’ll be at the place where we’re so scared we just lay down and give up our entire Bill of Rights, and demand the government to arrest everyone who looks at us cross-eyed. That’s what Mark and Matt seem to be after.
The point is, whoever wields the instrument must have both the knowledge and the WILL to kill with it. Nobody can know what is in the heart of the person standing behind you.
There will always be an element of risk to living in a free society. Yeah, I’d rather people not carry firearms or edged weapons onto commercial planes. But I’m not willing to forfeit any element of the Bill of Rights or habeas corpus to make Matt, Mark, Khan, neocon or anyone else feel a little safer, or to satisfy some primal desire for revenge.
Learn how to look people in the eye and be unafraid. Fear makes you a soft target.

The more I read Republican posts the more I am convinced they are cowards.
The victims of 9/11 are not the ones that died. They were the collateral damage. The true victims are the ones that are terrorized by the terrorist act. I am not a victim of 9/11. I realized those Saudi’s just got lucky because everybody treated it as a hijacking. But once word got out what they were actually doing, the passengers on that remaining plane stood up and took action. That action has been repeated many times over when passengers helped subdue other passengers who became violent.
The American people are strong willed, with the exception of cowardly Republicans who want to give up our liberties for the illusion of security. The United States is our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, and our pursuit of liberty and freedom for all. Anybody willing to give that up is a coward.

24. Christian Wright | February 22nd, 2008 at 7:46 am
Since the events of 9/11, it has struck me as odd that it is the Republican segment of the American population that seem to be the most terrorized. Why is it that the majority of Democrats do not buy into the ‘agenda of fear’ as do the majority of Republicans?
Can anyone explain?
26. Some Assembly Required | February 22nd, 2008 at 10:20 am
CO,
I believe at first it was just the majority of democrats that did not buy into the fear. But now anyone who does not buy into it anymore is in fact labeled a democrat or fascist lefty who is disconnected with reality on this site. Their desperation is growing to the point where it is almost humorous to watch if it wasn’t so sad. Considering by that logic over 80% of the US right now are to quote Obama last night ‘Delusional’.

You’re mistaken - we’re not fearful in the sense you claim…you seem to think that we’re shaking in our boots; we’re not…but we’re also cognizant of the threat we face. The difference is not between the fearful and the unfearful, but between the realistic and the unrealistic.

Look where the realistic has gotten you. 7 years later a very unpopular war, an economic crisis, a president who’s approval ratings are 19%. Were you even watching the debate last night? whenever bush’s policies were torn apart everyone cheered. This was in his home state of Texas. Yet you keep beating that drum of how unsafe America is from the world and terrorism and how the democrats can’t possibly understand. funny they are trying to protect us from big tobacco, but are also trying to allow individuals access to a controlled substance……..
Why not protect us against a deadly disease, namely AIDS? Therefore, what RESTRICTIONS of liberty should be in place to protect us from the spread AIDS? or some such disease? There was a time that quarantines were in place to protect “the common good”. Why not bring back quarantines?

The purpose being your entitled to your opinion as long as your opinion does not harm or belittle someone else. It’s designed to end racism if I’ve interpreted it correctly. But like everything human contains it’s flaws which can be exploited. But to say Canada has no freedom of speech is ridiculous. Not to mention way off topic. Mark, your allowing this?

“Mark, your allowing this?” Right on cue, you try to prohibit free speech. Bravo/sarc.
Now answer the question, SAR, “So, SAR, you believe that Canadians should not have the right to publish the Muhammad cartoons?”

Racism not only applies to the color of your skin or where you were born, but also your faith. Well done! Also, asking mark if he was allowing it is reasonable considering he deletes posts for far less.
First your question is misleading, however to answer your question; it depends on what are in the cartoons. You want yes or no, it’s not that simple. To demonstrate,
Do you believe America should publish terrorist propaganda?
Yes or No
55. Freedom1 | February 22nd, 2008 at 7:25 pm
You are stunningly stupid, SAR. Racism applies to race-ie. the color of one’s skin. Islam is a religion, not a race. People of all races can be Muslims. Therefore, being against the religion of Islam by definition has nothing to do with race or racism.
The Danish Muhammad cartoons, SAR. Those cartoons. Now, should it be illegal for Canadians to publish those cartoons?

Oh, in answer to your question, “Do you believe America should publish terrorist propaganda? Yes or No”

57. Some Assembly Required | February 22nd, 2008 at 7:34 pm
The term “Racism” has many definitions, and since you can be born into a religion, it can be argued that that is your ethnicity. Anyway that here nor there, you still dodged my question. Why, because if you answer it you will have to admit that this issue is not as black and white as what your arguing.
One more thing, Quoting Mark is not exactly the most credible way to prove your point. I’m sure even he would tell you that. Consider of course this is his blog, and what you quoted is his OPINIONS on the matter.

60. Freedom1 | February 23rd, 2008 at 6:05 am
As I also said, Canadian Observer, Canada no longer has freedom of speech or freedom of expression because of the Canadian Inquistion also known as the Canadian “Human Rights” Commission.
If (just for the sake of argument) the Canadian Inquistion was at all balanced in their persecution, it would first and foremost target Islam (and the Qu’ran) because Islam hates YOU and demands YOUR DEATH or Forced Conversion to Islam simply for not being a Muslim. Islam and the Qur’an also target “identifiable groups based on race and religion-Jews and Christians”-
These Qur’an verses incite hatred and violence towards atheists like YOU, CO:
Surely the vilest of animals in Allah’s sight are those who disbelieve, then they would not believe. Qur’an (8:55)
O ye who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are near to you, and let them find harshness in you, and know that Allah is with those who keep their duty. Qur’an (9:123)
These Qur’an verses incite hatred and violence towards Jews and Christians based on “race” and “religion”:
O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends. They are friends one to another. He among you who taketh them for friends is (one) of them. Lo! Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk. Qur’an (5:51)
The Jews call Ezra a son of Allah, and the Christians call Christ the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouth; (in this) they but imitate what the unbelievers of old used to say. Allah’s curse be on them: how they are deluded away from the Truth! Qur’an (9:30) (See also Bukhari 8:427), one of the last things Muhammad ever said on his deathbed was “May Allah curse the Jews and Christians.”)
Qur’an (9:29): - “Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth [Islam], (even if they are) of the People of the Book [Jews and Christians], until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.”
ROP: The Qur’an as Hate Speech
Bottom line Canadian Observer, your once vaunted and beautiful nation now is a fascist, Orwellian parody of itself. Canada has no freedom of speech and has no freedom of expression thanks to the Canadian Inquistion.
Furthermore, now that Canada has made criticism of Islam a crime [= adopting the Sharia law which criminalizes blasphemy], Canada has NO defense against Islam - at least no non-violent defense (aka reason, rationality, debate). So, not only is Canada a place where freedom of speech has been stamped out, it’s also defenseless against the advance of Islam and Sharia law.
Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Expression are extraordinarily important Canadian Observer. You will learn this eventually. Unfortunately, not soon enough to save Canada. Canada is DONE as a free nation.

You on the other hand keep changing the subject common for those with a losing argument. Your abortion comment is the perfect example. Where did I even bring up abortion in this thread? Talk about deflection.

“The purpose being your entitled to your opinion as long as your opinion does not harm or belittle someone else. It’s designed to end racism if I’ve interpreted it correctly.” SAR
The altruistic intent comes with the unintended consequence of stifling free speech. Just ask Mr. Levant.
But to you leftists its all about good intentions isn’t it. The results be damned.

By the tone of your posts, Freedom1, it appears that, with the exception of violence against another person, you harbour almost as much hatred as Islamic extremists do. Your rhetoric borders on the hysterical.
Perhaps you should consider taking a few steps back and look at the situation from a different perspective. Lower the level of your paranoia.

>>>>>Learn how to look people in the eye and be unafraid. Fear makes you a soft target.<<<
What a LOAD of S#!T,
I carry a .45 CCw.
Look all you want tough guy, but at the end of the day if several people, or an armed person accosts you, your stupid stare will be your demise.
I suggest you go on the subway in harlem after midnight and let those among you feel the wrath of your “stare” im sure it’ll intimidate.

Fmr Marine,
HURAAH! Excellent point.
These foolish liberals think that pretty faces and soft voices will counter all hostilities directed at them.
The usual mantra, “We must understand their rage, blah, blah, blah.”
When the other side openly says “I want to destroy you.” They still think that their simple minded rhetoric will work.
Now if a Republican says it……it is a serious threat.

FmrMarine - Damn right!
TLBS -
Exactly. Their weakness oozes from them and emboldens the enemy. It’s like 1938 all over again only instead of Hitler openly saying he was going to destroy his enemies, it’s the Islamists screaming “Islam will dominate the world” to every media outlet available. How many times does Ahmadinejad have to say that Iran will “wipe Israel off the map” before the world takes his threat seriously and stops Iran from constructing a nuclear bomb??? Foolish liberals. Very foolish liberals.

CO,
What bothers you more? The daily atrocities committed by Muslims? Or that fact that I point them out?
Nevermind, I know the answer. It’s the latter. Your fear of Islamists must be overwhelming. That’s the only explanation for why you continuously defend their horrific actions against their innocent victims. Yeesh.
P.S. - Canadian Observer, your comments, “you harbour almost as much hatred as Islamic extremists do”… directing hatred towards me-a Christian- are grounds for having you arrested and hauled before the Canadian Inquistion to be interrogated in their star chamber and later fined for hate speech. Be careful. Canada is no longer a free nation. You surrendered your right to free speech without a fight. Without even a whimper.

Canada has no Freedom of Speech or Freedom of Expression
51. Freedom1 | February 22nd, 2008 at 6:44 pm
I find it odd, Freedom1, that you will gladly give up your right to privacy and any others rights your government might deem necessary in the war against terrorism and yet you are outraged that Canadian citizens now have the freedom from attack by those who wish to incite hatred against them based on a person’s colour, race, religion ethnicity, or sexual orientation.
What’s up with that?

Thanks for your concern. Since the U.S. does not have this law in force, I can rest easy, however, if you ever decide to become a citizen of our great nation, I’ll make sure to give you a wide berth and promise to never utter a disparaging remark in your direction.

Canadian Observer,
No Americans have lost any rights in Islam’s War against the West. You’ve got to stop lying.
Lol. You don’t seem to understand the Canadian Inquistion very well. As the Ezra Levant case demonstrates, all that would be required to have you arrested for hate speech, is for any other Canadian-especially a Canadian Christian-to read your comments to me and feel offended. That Canadian could then have you arrested and hauled before the Canadian Inquistion to be charged with hate speech. How many Canadians are there? 30+ million? The charges of hate speech against you Canadian Observer could come at any time.
/hollow laughter ensues…
