Pictures are worth a thousand words…

by Matt Margolis on February 25th, 2008 at 01:24pm

So start saying them

More from Politico.

UPDATE: Of course it’s a non-issue. I’m not suggesting it implies anything. What should be the topic is that the Hillary campaign is apparently behind the release of the photo…

UPDATE: How predictable… our friends on the left are apparently either too stupid realize or just don’t care that it was Hillary’s campaign that put the photo out, because they’re blaming us “right wingers” for daring to talk about it.

UPDATE: Hillary camp denies having anything to do with the photos…

Wow. That’s a stretch. Perhaps you failed to read the editor’s note on the Drudge link? It’s not uncommon for world leaders to dress in the traditional garb of the region they’re visiting out of respect for the culture.

Ack! Obama is dressed like a Muslim! Everyone hide under their desks!

  2. Martin says:

I seem to remember Laura Bush wearing a burka when she went to the Middle East. Same with Secretary of State Rice. Clearly this makes them muslims as well.

  3. SteaM says:

    Matt,

I saw the picture. You ask for words… so here goes:

    And? What’s your point?

OK, now it’s your turn. What exactly is your point?

  4. Joe says:

Yep… it is completely offensive to actually recognize someone else’s culture! How disgusting, ain’t it? Why is it so bad to respect another culture when you are in a foreign country? Was it awful when Bush holds hands with the Saudi King?
We should force EVERYONE to dress, talk and act just like an American!!!

All I can say is that this will be great practice for when the Republican smear machine really gets going in calling Obama a mean ol’ Muslim (among other things).

And Matt… why doesn’t it surprise me that between you and Mark, it would be YOU that posts this one. At least Mark has some original thoughts.

  5. eric says:

Non-issue and I’m not an Obama fan.

Now, if you find a picture of him wearing a Che shirt, you might have something.

  6. SteaM says:

    Matt, what’s your point?

I don’t want to put words in your mouth. I want to hear it from you.

  7. BARRASSO says:

So what is your point? I know it is supposed to prove that Obama is a brainwashed manchurian candidate that was trained since childhood in a “madrassa” whatever that is, to overthrow America and make us all submit to sharia law or something right? I could pull some photos of Bush in goofy outfits or holding hands romantically with a Saudi sheik if you want. Getting pretty desperate around the rightwingosphere, can’t win on any single issue.

Also why is the photo of McCain on the righthand column upside down all the time, is this the tell that reveals this whole site is a spoof?

  8. Some Assembly Required says:

Maybe Obama does know a thing or too about Foreign Policy after all.

  9. Retired Spook says:

Now, if you find a picture of him wearing a Che shirt, you might have something.

Eric, that’s only some of his supporters who do that. Now what’s that old saying about “the company one keeps”?

  10. InDa says:

Sorry, anything the candidates wear in the past is irrelevant, only what they wear in the present and future should be noted.

  11. Bigfoot says:

I seem to remember Laura Bush wearing a burka when she went to the Middle East.

I think it was a head scarf, which she wore while visiting the Dome Of The Rock. Some lefties trotted out that pic in response to righties showing Nancy Pelosi’s head scarf worn in Damascus, the pic possibly having been taken in a mosque. In either case, the scarf would be a show of respect rather than submission. A burka (”burqa”?), on the other hand, shows nothing but the eyes. Mrs. Bush (and anyone else, for that matter) would have been unrecognizable from the pic alone.

  12. SteaM says:

Rudy wore woman’s clothing sometimes. I didn’t care about that either… still didn’t like him but not for his choice of clothing.

I sitll don’t see the point, Matt and that you have not given us your point I see that you have none.

  13. Obama2008 says:

    You know what’s next…….

Someone on the right is going to mention that he is after all, black……

  14. SteaM says:

…and that he is going to have Gene Wylder as his running mate.

I read that on Drudge so it has to be true :)

  15. Rich says:

Haha this is worse than Dukakis on a tank. He just looks stupid, much like Kerrey in the bunny suit in 2004. You trolls need to show your “outrage” at the Clinton camp rather than Matt and Mark. The Democratic rift is complete, and Clinton just lost most of Obama’s supporters if she somehow wins. If Obama wins, how many Clinton supporters does he get? This makes it more important for Republicans to vote for Hillary in the open primary states left. Keep this trainwreck going.

  16. SteaM says:

Oh ok, right Matt, so you had no point.

I question that since my assumption was that you think Barack is actually muslim when he in fact is not. Or some wingnuttery thing like that.

So you think Hillary did this?

I think Drudge did this with the help of some slimey partisan conservative folks who want to create a “fight” between Hillary and Barack. But hey, if hillary released the photo well, you and I could have opinions about this but bottom line is people who like Barack know this picture is a non-issue.

Let’s talk about McCain wanting to go to war with Iran. I guess if you are pro-McCain you are pro draft.

Any McCain supporters who are parents of draft-elligible children might want to consider this before voting for him.

  17. Rich says:

“Let’s talk about McCain wanting to go to war with Iran”

Ok, lets talk about Obama wanting to bomb Pakistan. I guess if you are pro Obama you are pro nuclear war. Any parents worried about nuclear fallout should consider this.

  18. SteaM says:

    Rich,

“Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, under attack from a rival who portrays him as naive on foreign policy, declared Wednesday that he would use military force against Al Qaeda operatives hiding in tribal areas of Pakistan if that nation did not move more aggressively against them first.”

I don’t want war with anyone. However, I think this is an answer to those of YOU who keep shouting democrats are weak on terror.

  19. Nietzsche-Is-Pietzsche says:

    Matt-
You want to talk about interesting pictures just look to your right at the pic of McCain. Quite “presidential” huh? I’d say that pic sums it up and says all you need to know about the Right. LOL

  20. Sunny says:

Hey Matt, why on earth do you have John McCain’s picture upside down? Seems disrespectful to me.

  21. Rich says:

Steam- Nice ju-jitso there, complaining that McCain wants to stop our enemy Iran from getting nuclear weapons and then bragging about how tough Obomber is for wanting to bomb our ally Pakistan (which already has nukes). Obama isnt just weak on terror- he’s also clueless as demonstrated by his policies.

  22. Rich says:

But do’nt take it from me, listen to what Clinton had to say about it,

“He wavers from seeming to believe that mediation and meetings without preconditions can solve some of the world’s most intractable problems to advocating rash, unilateral military action without the cooperation of our allies in the most sensitive part of the world,”

  23. Joe says:

    Rich,
you obviously either can’t read or don’t want to read.
It isn’t Pakistan (as in an action against the government and the country) he said he would bomb. He said he would take action in the remote mountains if Pakistan doesn’t step it up and we have actionable intelligence to do so.

So get your head out of the sand or just stop playing dumb.

  24. eric says:

    Spook,
Speaking of the company one keeps, I just came across this article about Senator Obama’s cousin Raila Odinga (former Kenyan presidential candidate). This is very interesting and if true, somewhat disturbing.

    http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2008/01/obama-islam-and.html

Does anyone know if Senator Obama has made any statements about Mr. Odinga and the alleged familial ties?

  25. Joe says:

eric, that is old news and has already been out there. Apparently he is some distant relative. What is the point?

You people love lobbing things like this out there, but never actually make a point about anything.

So what? Obama is also a distant relative to Dick Cheney. Does that make him heartless?

  26. Canadian Observer says:

Regardless of who is responsible for circulating the photo it just goes to show that the pickins are thin when it comes to digging up dirt on Obama.

The mudslingers will have to do a better job than that if they want to put a stop to the gains he has amassed so far.

  27. Rich says:

“you obviously either can’t read or don’t want to read.”

Ah an insult to start your post. Wonderful. Do you think Islamic radicals and the general population of Pakistan would differentiate American bombs dropping in tribal areas from us bombing their cities? Think they might fake civilian casualties and make it look as if we weren’t bombing Al qaeda at all? Musharef is terrible but better to deal with him than who would take over after an Islamic insurrection. This is the problem we face when dealing with nations that have nukes, and that is why it is important to stop iran from getting them. Head in the sand indeed. But once again, don’t take my words on it, listen to what Clinton has to say about Barry’s foreign policy.

  28. Joe says:

insults only because that is what I usually get from commenters here.

Wouldn’t you think that any action within Pakistan would actually involve talking with Musharraf? If he can’t or is in no position to do it, then we do it. What is wrong with actually talking to other leaders of nations? They are an ally in this “war”.

As for Iran, haven’t we already hashed this out? They stopped trying to make nukes. Just ask Kahn. He is always out here so proud that W has stopped Iran, NK and Libya.

  29. James C. says:

Canadian… Slim pickins???? with all that Resko stuff I would not say there isn’t legit dirt out there on Obama … Personally I think the photo would be more revealing if it was from before he was a senator… I mean…I think it is still debateable that he went to a Muslim school, and he has a Muslim middle name…. Hussein… So that is probably what the Clinton machine was thinking when they put this photo out there… At minimum it reminds people about that… And I don’t think Obama handled it well… He called it a smear photo and all that. All he had to do was explain the origin. If the shot and that was it… His response suggests to me he is hiding something or is worried about something being exposed…

  30. SEW says:

    “You know what’s next…….

Someone on the right is going to mention that he is after all, black…… ” Obama2008

    You’re on the right?

  31. eric says:

    Joe,
Old news from a January 2008 blog article? Way to discount it without discussing the merits of the article. The point is pretty obvious. It appears that this (allegedly) murderous thug is Senator Obama’s cousin and he is also seeking a position of power in Kenya.

    From the article:
“Raila Odinga has, in his own words, a “close personal friendship” with Barrack Hussein Obama Junior.”

If this is true, what kind of influence might Mr. Odinga have over Senator Obama?

  32. Canadian Observer says:

    30. James C. | February 25th, 2008 at 5:49 pm

This excerpt from a Chicago Sun Times November 5, 2006 article on the affair, James, leads me to believe that there wasn’t a deliberate effort on Obama’s part to do anything illegal. I am satisfied with his explanation.

Q: Does it display a lack of judgment on your part to be engaging in real estate deals with Tony Rezko at a point his connections to state government had been reported to be under federal investigation?

A: I’ve always held myself to the highest ethical standards. During the ten years I have been in public office, I believe I have met those standards and I know that is what people expect of me. I have also understood the importance of appearances.

With respect to the purchase of my home, I am confident that everything was handled ethically and above board.

But I regret that while I tried to pay close attention to the specific requirements of ethical conduct, I misgauged the appearance presented by my purchase of the additional land from Mr. Rezko. It was simply not good enough that I paid above the appraised value for the strip of land that he sold me. It was a mistake to have been engaged with him at all in this or any other personal business dealing that would allow him, or anyone else, to believe that he had done me a favor. For that reason, I consider this a mistake on my part and I regret it.

Throughout my life, I have put faith in confronting experiences honestly and learning from them. And that is what I will do with this experience as well.

  33. Rich says:

“Wouldn’t you think that any action within Pakistan would actually involve talking with Musharraf?” No, because any known bombing by the U.S. would result in Musharef getting a bullet in his head. Maybe you missed how the country acted over the Danish cartoons. As for Iran, from the AP,

“The U.N. nuclear monitoring agency presented documents Monday that diplomats said indicate Iran may have focused on a nuclear weapons program after 2003 — the year that a U.S. intelligence report says such work stopped…. Asked whether board members were shown information indicating Tehran continued weapons-related activities after that time, Simon Smith, the chief British delegate to the IAEA, said: “Certainly some of the dates … went beyond 2003.”

Who has their head in the sand?

  34. Piggy says:

Hmm where is the discussion about John McCain’s co chairman in Arizona getting indicted on 35 felony counts?

  35. js says:

In short, Mr. Odinga in effect offered to Islamize Kenya in return for Muslim votes, despite the fact that Muslims make up only 10% of the population, compared to the 80% who are Christian. Mr. Odinga himself is nominally an Anglican, yet he signed a document that refers to Islam throughout as “the one true religion” and denigrates Christians as “worshippers of the cross.”

Whether it is likely, as Mr. Odinga claims, that his party won the election with such a program, only to have it stolen by Mr. Kibaki, I cannot say. Nor am I qualified to speculate about why Mr. Odinga threw in his lot with the Islamists. It should certainly concern us that one of Africa’s most stable and pro-Western countries is apparently threatened with the same grim fate that has befallen other East African states, such as Sudan and Somalia.

What, you will be asking by now, what does any of this have to do with Barack Obama? Well, Mr. Obama’s father came from Kenya and his son is proud to call himself a Luo. His Kenyan relations boast that, even if they cannot get a Luo into the Kenyan presidential residence, they can look forward to a Luo in the White House.

Indeed, the connection may be even closer than a tribal one. Mr. Odinga even claims that Mr. Obama is his cousin, because the senator’s father was Mr. Odinga’s maternal uncle. Whether or not this true, the two men are friends and political allies.

In August 2006, Mr. Obama visited Kenya and spoke in support of Mr. Odinga’s candidacy at rallies in Nairobi. The Web site Atlas Shrugs has even posted a photograph of the two men side by side. More recently, Mr. Odinga says that Mr. Obama interrupted his campaigning in New Hampshire to have a telephone conversation with his African cousin about the constitutional crisis in Kenya.

What should Americans make of Mr. Obama’s Kenyan connection? If he has been putting tribal or family considerations above America’s national interest by supporting Mr. Odinga’s anti-Western candidacy, it raises serious questions about his judgement.

At the time of his visit in 2006, President Kibaki’s spokesman complained that Mr. Obama was behaving like a “stooge” of Mr. Odinga — which was at best undignified for a visiting American senator, and at worst unwarranted interference in the internal politics of another country.

Even more serious are the doubts raised by Mr. Obama’s attitude toward Islam, which has so far received much less scrutiny than might be expected in a post-September 11 presidential election.

  38. Christian Wright says:

Obama wearing traditional garb while visiting a foreign country is a sign of respect to that country’s culture.

I cannot explain why Rudy has been photographed wearing dresses on four separate occasions, but I am sure there is a good reason.

  39. js says:

Obama wearing traditional garb while visiting his fathers tribe is a sign of unity for that tribes leadership and beliefs, to include its desire to install sharia laws in Kenya.

Who cares what Rudy wears. He is not endorsing Islamic Sharia Laws in Kenya and running for President here.

I need to ask a question.

Does everybody here know that the Koran is based upon the Old Testament of the Bible.

Because Christians, Jews, and Muslims all believe in the same god: The God of Abraham, we all share the same theological history.

Sharia law demands women that have sex outside of marriage should be stoned to death; but it says that in the Bible too. And there are fanatical Old Testament Christian that would love to burn down abortion clinics and stone girls that have sex outside of marriage.

There is a cure for HPV, but the far Christian right did not want Merck to distribute the pill because they thought it would lead to sex outside of marriage. This was even after it was proved 80% effective against this life threatening disease. These hard core Christians thought catching HPV and then dying was a great punishment for girls who had sex outside of marriage. The end result is death, and death by disease is as good as death by stoning.

  45. eric says:

    CW,
He was visiting Africa (specifically, Kisumu, Kenya). The photo in question, apparently, was taken in Wajir in Northeastern Kenya (near the border of Somalia).

  46. js says:

    CW,

You really need to pay attention. That might be about the only thing you dont pay for in your life, and it rightly shows.

You really dont have any clue about the Koran. “IF” it were truely scripture, then it would follow that it would meet the tests set in the Torah for scripture. Truely, anyone who claims that it is based on the OT is FOS (as in constipated without mercy).

  47. Tractatus says:

No released it. it was published and “released” by some African online magazine.

Drudge has fooled you all. He did this just to get the two dem campaigns to point fingers at each other and to fire up the people (like most of you guys) who hate the clintons because someone told you to.

    You all got Drudged!

  51. Christian Wright says:

    js:

The common denominator for the Bible, the Koran and the Tora is the Old Testament, but, of course, books, like language, evolve over time to reflect the culture.

The Koran has more stories about Jesus than the Bible because the Koran does not edit out his life between age 13 and 30 like the modern Bible does.
In the Koran you read how Jesus had to gain wisdom and maturity to use his powers wisely. In one story Jesus cursed a man with blindness when he shouted at his father, Joseph, over some carpentry work that he had contracted. You actually read how Jesus evolved into an adult and lived to learn how deal with his powers and his destiny.

There is so much in common between all three books.

But since Jesus never really existed and is just a metaphor, I guess in the end it really means nothing.

  54. Tractatus says:

For the intelligent people out there, here’s the truth: Christians and Jews worship the same Almighty God.

Muslims, on the other hand, worship a rock named, “Allah”.

Did I call it, or did I call it?

The sad part is, Freedom1 isn’t doing schtick–he seriously believes what he posted. He seriously believes that Islam is not an Abrahamic religion, he seriously believes that Muslims worship a rock, and he seriously has no idea what “Allah” means. And he wants to be taken seriously anyway.

  55. Freedom1 says:

    Links on what “Allah” is:

    Allah - The Moon god

    The Pagan Sources of Islam

  56. Freedom1 says:

Jews and Christians worship the same Almighty God.

Muslims worship a rock, called “Allah”. Allah commands Muslims to fight and kill Jews and Christians.

Qur’an (9:29): - “Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth [Islam], (even if they are) of the People of the Book [Jews and Christians], until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.”

Allah, the pagan rock god, says that Jews and Christians are “deluded” and that Allah has “cursed” Jews and Christians…

The Jews call Ezra a son of Allah, and the Christians call Christ the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouth; (in this) they but imitate what the unbelievers of old used to say. Allah’s curse be on them: how they are deluded away from the Truth! Qur’an (9:30) (See also Bukhari 8:427), one of the last things Muhammad ever said on his deathbed was “May Allah curse the Jews and Christians.”

Allah, the pagan rock god commands Muslims not to take Jews and Christians as friends…

O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends. They are friends one to another. He among you who taketh them for friends is (one) of them. Lo! Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk. Qur’an (5:51)

  57. js says:

Actually, allah was a formal title to hubal, a moon good ( originaly derived from UR via assyaria).

UR was the land of Abrahams ancestory, they also worshipped many idols. God told Abraham to leave that place, and he did.

Muhammad grew up worshipping many pagan gods in the Kabah including the moon, either called Hubal and Allah. Mohammads parents were “slaves” of the temple, giving to the term “slaves of allah” which mohammad most certainly vernerated in Islam. Allah actually means “the god”, and is plural context, as it “the god” above all other gods *idols).
