Iraq: Where We Are, Where We’re Headed John McCain, Republican Nominee for President of the United States of America

Open Thread: Super Tuesday Two

March 4th, 2008 at 12:00pm Mark Noonan

Latest polling shows Hillary with a solid lead in Ohio and neck and neck in Texas; from what I can tell, the momentum has shifted ever so slightly in Hillary’s favor over the past week, but we’ll have to see if its enough to carry her to victory in Texas - and, in my view, if Hillary doesn’t win Texas then the pressure from the party establishment will become intense for her to quit. Be that as it may, I see no signs of quitting on Hillary’s part - and, know what?, if I were in her position, I’d keep right at it until I was actually beaten. Why roll over for a non-entity like Obama just because he’s had a good media ride?

Anyways - what do you think? Brave enough to make any predictions?

UPDATE, Matt Margolis: It’s hard to make any predictions for the Democrat races in Ohio and Texas, but what I’m hearing so far are major indicators of a momentum shift in Hillary’s favor. Democrats who have made their decision in the past 3-days after going for Hillary, and the whole “change” message is not having as big an impact as it used to. I think given these indicators, if Hillary can win either Ohio or Texas, but not both, she’ll still stay in the race.

In other news, it’s looking likely that John McCain will secure the Republican nomination tonight.

UPDATE, Matt Margolis, 9:02 PM: McCain clinches nomination… Blogs For Victory is proud to announce the launch of Blogs for John McCain’s Victory.

UPDATE, by Mark Noonan: Watching McCain’s victory speech; in pointing out that we can’t undo the past and we must win in Iraq, McCain is offering a devastating critique of HillBama’s position on Iraq, and the War on Terrorism.

Ohio: 26% in, 58% Hillary, 40% Obama; 38% in, Hillary 57%, Obama 41%; 49% in, Hillary 57%, Obama 41%; 10:56pm Eastern Fox calls Ohio for Clinton

Texas: 10% in, 51% Obama, 48% Hillary; 15% in, 50% Obama, 48% Clinton; 22% in, Obama 49%, Hillary 49% (less than 3,000 votes separation out of more than 1.4 million counted)

UPDATE, by Matt Margolis, 10:51 PM: Hillary poised to win Ohio… Razor thin margin in Texas… Hillary takes slight lead:

Clinton: 748,849 49%
Obama: 738,007 49%

UPDATE: Hillary wins Ohio… Hilary leads widens in Texas…

UPDATE, by Mark Noonan: Hillary’s warm up speaker says “let us go to Michigan and Florida”…ie, lets have a bloody knife-fight for the nomination.

Precincts Reporting: 54%
Hillary Clinton: 987,717 50%
Barack Obama: 940,394 48%

UPDATE, by Mark Noonan: Is it just me, or is Obama acting like he won the Democratic nomination tonight?

UPDATE, Matt Margolis, 11:54 PM: Hillary’s lead continues to get wider… I think it is clear that momentum has shifted away from Obama…

UPDATE, by Mark Noonan: MSNBC calls Texas for Hillary. The “mo” is certainly back with Hillary right now - could be that the rather empty rhetoric of Obama is finally starting to wear off…

UPDATE: Kossaks ain’t too happy

    Mark-

What’s with the sudden burst of “Hillary love”? Maybe secretly you want Hillary in the White House so that your guy’s can have a second bite at the apple. Couldn’t get Bill so let’s move on to Hill?
Why is it that the Right has such an unnatural lust to hate all things Clinton?

  • 2. Obama2008  |  March 4th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

Clinton hatred is merely thinly masked jealousy.

While the “right wing” has made a saint out of Ronald Reagan, the rest of the country knows that he damaged this nation, lied, sold arms to Iran, attacked the middle class and labor and is responsible for many of today’s problems.

Bill Clinton inn contrast created the largest expansion of the U.S. economy, captured terrorists who bombed the WTC and the Cole and was generally an effective president.

Clinton was more popular than Reagan in the polls when his term was over and for most of his term.

They just can’t handle those facts.

    ohh, I know…

Barry Snakeoilsalesman Obama, the Uniter, will reach across the aisle, and mentioned Chuck Hagel would make a good Secretary of Defense!

    Liberal Derangement Syndrome.

  • 5. Joe  |  March 4th, 2008 at 1:56 pm

SEW… what is your point other than to call Obama names? Are you trying to show your hatred for Chuck Hagel?

Wait a second… you people always claim that Dems have BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome). So you claim we hate Bush for no reason.

Meanwhile… you are saying something about “Liberal Derangement Syndrome”. I guess that would be LDS. Are you saying that is what YOU have or are you saying that is what we have?

I’m confused with you people trying to say we all have some kind of “Syndrome”.

  • 6. SEW  |  March 4th, 2008 at 2:20 pm

Just respecting your agenda to not use the H word. Or is every middle name off limits? And how is stating what the Big O stated, hatred for Hagel by me?

Sounds like Liberal Derangement Syndrome to me. And yes you are confused, actually very confused.

Sad fact is, for those of us on the outside looking in, regardless of who the ultimate winner in the race for President will be, any one of the contenders would be a welcome change from who you currently have embedded in the White House.

The U.S. has no where to go but up.

I think Hillary will win Ohio and RI by 10 and maybe eek out a win in TX in the primary but lose in total delgates there because of apportionment and the caucus factor and lose VT by 20. This would be a victroy of sorts for her but not really. Also, Tom Brokaw is reporting that Barack has 50 more superdelegates in his pocket and if true is devastating to Hillary. I hope it is true, though I respect the Clintons I would like them to go away. I think a McCain Obama race is what is needed in November.

    Jeremiah-

That’s highly specious reasoning. Regular church attendance has never risen above 30% in this nation.

  • 15. Jeremiah  |  March 4th, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Regular church attendance has never risen above 30% in this nation.

    Nietzsche-Is-Pietzsche,

Well now, you can’t say that…can you?

When the first surveys were conducted in ‘39, there was a steady increase until ‘55 when church attendance peaked at 49%.

    1939 41
    1950 39
    1955 49
    1962 46
    1967 43
    1972 40
    1977 41
    1980 40
    1985 42
    1990 40
    1996 37
    1999 43

Since ‘55 there has been a steady decrease in church attendance. Liberalism has slowly eroded the family unit ever since, through the entertainment industry and internet.

The FCC could do more, but what do they care, ya know? Our government, the Courts and everything has been corrupted to an obscene degree, which is a reflection of the decline in society and the family unit. Hillary or Obama either one will probably break the final moral threads that remain in America.

Since this is an OPEN THREAD….

Oddly enough, I didn’t see any comments on this blog about this…..

Bush: “Wait a minute, what’d you just say? You’re predicting 4-dollar-a-gallon Gasoline?

Reporter: “a number of analysts are predicting 4 dollar gas this spring

    Bush: Oh yeah?

    Reporter: “.when they reformulate”

    Bush: “That’s interesting. I hadn’t heard that.”

Do you think he has ANY clue what the average person is dealing with?

  • 18. sleepygene  |  March 4th, 2008 at 4:36 pm

He has no clue Joe and thank the Lord we will be done with him soon.

  • 19. SEW  |  March 4th, 2008 at 4:45 pm

Reggie Bush controls gasoline prices? I thought that was a function of OPEC and market forces.

  • 20. Joe  |  March 4th, 2008 at 4:56 pm

SEW, it doesn’t matter what the prices are a function of and I didn’t claim any Bush reggie or otherwise set the prices.

I’m just guessing that perhaps the President of the U.S. might… just might have som clue as to what the price of the most important commodity is doing. It is only one of the most important things affecting the American people. But why should he care, right?

Besides, Reggie Bush had such a tough year last year, he doesn’t have time to worry about gas prices.

  • 21. Sunny  |  March 4th, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Liberalism has slowly eroded the family unit ever since, through the entertainment industry and internet. Jeremiah

So, Jeremiah, enlighten us as to your family unitl. Married? Have children? And how has liberalism affected your family unit? Can you still attend chruch as you wish, pray as you wish, worship as you wish, be faithful to your wife and family? Exactly how has liberalism hurt your lifestyle and family?

  • 22. Joe  |  March 4th, 2008 at 5:01 pm

There were no gays before the entertainment industry and the internet!

“I’m just guessing that perhaps the President of the U.S. might… just might have som clue as to what the price [of the most important commodity] is doing.”

Big difference in what the price is, and what the predicted price is. And clearly W[oops, middle initial] has som [sic] clue. Unless one suffers from…..B D S.

  • 24. Joe  |  March 4th, 2008 at 5:13 pm

SEW, at least make some sense.

ok… I left the “e” off of “some”. I’m going to go out on a limb and say I’m not the only person ever to mis-spell something on this blog.

Anyway…… yep. It is a big difference in what the price is and what the predicted price is. I don’t know what you are saying. Are you suggesting he knows the price, but not the predicted price?

Was there a point to your post?

Did I spell everything right this time?

  • 25. Sunny  |  March 4th, 2008 at 5:18 pm

Well, SEW, what most of us do understand, and apparently you do not is that W doesn’t have much of a clue about much of anything. With the price of gas being a pretty hot topic in this country one would think our president would have a CLUE that the talk is about it going to $4.00 this summer. However, when you do not have to pay for it, I guess it doesn’t really matter. Just let the tax payers pay for his trips around the world, to the “ranch”, to Camp David - anywhere his little heart desires to go. Never mind the cost to the American taxpayer.

  • 26. SEW  |  March 4th, 2008 at 5:21 pm

Clueless, some are predicting $60 a barrel. Some are predicting more hurricanes and AGW, even though this has been the coldest winter in 60 years.

  • 27. Joe  |  March 4th, 2008 at 5:27 pm

I assume that post #25 was trying to prove that predictions can be anything you want.

$60 a barrel, huh? Boy… I’d love to trade some oil futures with that guy.

There have been a couple of global warming posts in the last week or two. I’m not going to rehash them here.

Exactly how has liberalism hurt your lifestyle and family?

    Sunny,

It doesn’t affect me and my family, because we are not Liberals, and have no desire to participate in liberalism. Although it very well could affect me my family–seeing as the Communist ACLU would like to enact “hate-crimes” laws against ministers for speaking the truth. It could also affect our churches, as the ACLU would like also to tax them. These proposals are nothing more than hatred to be directed at Christians.

Others who are liberals and like the liberal lifestyle, also affect others in their day to day lives, and this especially affect children - some of them, many of the children never get to take their first breath our see for the first time, or feel mommy’s love and affection, no, all they get is a pair of forceps in which their little fragile heads are crushed. Mercilessly, and a mommy who is forever scarred.
The ones who do make it to take their first breath, and start to school are given instructions on sodomy indoctrination and promiscuity. After school is hanging out with friends who indulge in drug usage and other destructive lifestyles….I see them all the time, the walk the streets looking for something to steal and then re-sale at a pawn shop somewhere, and then take the money and buy drugs and alcohol.

So it’s not me or others who aren’t liberals, but it is is those who are liberals and the effect that is created–The Courts, The ACLU, The liberal voters, Communists such as Farrakhan, Communists such as HIllary Clinton, Ted Kennedy, Barack Obama, Jack Murtha, Diane Feinstein, John Kerry, Robert C. Byrd, Jay D. Rockefeller, Barbara Boxer …. just to name of few.

Matt: Blogs For Victory is proud to announce the launch of Blogs for John McCain’s Victory.

    Yippee!!

Does that mean sometime soon GopBloggers.com will sometime soon work past the GOP Opts to Remain Minority thread? As interesting and instructive as it may be, it’s hardly ideologically appropriate. And while ideological appropriateness means very little to me in and of itself, this particular post is a constant reminder how truly inappropriate the GOP ideology got during the Bush years.

Speaking of ideologically appropriate, how much sense does it make to advocate second amendment rights when you’ve been aiming at your foot for the last three weeks? Lol!

Then again, making the post disappear is a lot easier than making the reality it represents disappear. The good news is that to the extent that anyone in the current GOP fold has the credentials to effect that change in reality, it’s hard to argue anyone is better suited than John McCain.

    Jeremiah-

Your numbers for church attendance are interesting, particularly because you supplied no source identification for them. 50% ????? Jeremiah not even this country on it’s best Sunday ever saw half of it’s population in a church. The stats you’re quoting are based on flawed information because it is believed that when asked people will lie to the pollster and give a false positive. It’s an effect called “social desirability bias”. In short it means the person being asked will answer according to what they think society wants them to do. The actual answer to the question of how many regular church attendees there are usually hovers somewhere around 20% at any give time. Nice try my friend but no c-gar.

If oil prices remain high, that’s simultaneously bad and good. Bad for obvious reasons. Good, because it will spur the development of alternative energy sources. I hope when John McCain wins the presidential election in November, he institutes a nation-wide Manhattan Project to get America off Saudi terrorist oil and on to nuclear power, wind power, solar power, hydrogen fuel cell cars, etc. A powerful, motivated Manhattan Project is one of the most positive steps America can take toward winning Islam’s War Against the West.

At one point you even thought Stephen Colbert was an actual conservative.

And our party will be decimated by the time this is over. She’s going to get as nasty as it takes, huh? sigh. We’re going to make this very easy for John McCain. That’s my Dems! Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory once again!
(note: obama still leads in pledged delegates. she can’t catch up unless she wins by double digits in every remaining state, but none the less, this will kill us.)

From an article Howard Fineman just posted at msnbc.

This race is going all the way to Denver, to the Democratic convention. There will be arguing, vicious arguing, about what to do with Florida and Michigan. What if they hold second events–do-overs–in June? What if Hillary doubles down on her criticism of Barack Obama’s readiness for office?

I was just talking to one of Obama’s top advisers, and he was picking through what happened Tuesday night. This is a hard-eyed, unsentimental guy, and he worried aloud that Obama is a prize fighter who can’t–or won’t–deliver the knockout punch. “Barack wants to win it the way he wants to–with some class–otherwise, what’s the point?” But Hillary just wants to win, and is willing to be as nasty as it takes.

Time to buy another case of popcorn.

Great day here in Texas. The train to Denver is ready to go. Barry Snakeoilsalesman doesn’t know what happened to Change and Hope, and Billary thinks her message, whatever that is, has finally been heard. Poetic.

Let the battle begin. Oh yea, what are we going to do with the disenfranchised “Democratic” voters of Michigan and Florida? Howie, can you still scream? “Democrats” disenfranchising “Democrats”.

    Let every vote count!

What none of you have concidered while you’re slapping each other on your butts is this……. let’s say Hillary is the Democratic (yes thats how it’s pronounced shortbusers) nominee for president, what if Obama becomes her Vice Presidental running mate? Oh don’t say “no way” just yet because when asked last night neither one of them said a definite no to the prospect. Wow!!! What a unifier for the Democratic (there’s that word again) Party. I’ll conceed that if Obama had won Hillary would have rejected the number 2 spot on the ticket due to her high standing in the Democratic (once again, you should learn it) Party. However Obama as a rising star would have everthing to gain by a number 2 spot and it’s a sure bet he’d assend to the presidency in 8 years.
I think you guy’s may be laughing at your own presidental defeat. Stay tuned…..

    Nipsy,

That’s exactly why I’m changing party affiliation to vote for my soulmate Barry Hussein in April.

I have seen the light, he is the Messiah. The long promised hidden 13th Mahdi. Allua Akbar…Death to AmeriKa

    Hey phnxy-

Well at least now we know that Obama isn’t the Antichrist. Rev. Hagee looked into his crystal balls (when’s the last time you think he’s seen them?) and has given Obama the “all clear” on demon posession.
    Whew!!! What a relief…..

    Jeremiah,

    From http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_prac.htm:

“Many polls indicate that the percentage of adults who regularly attend a religious service is about 40% in the U.S., 20% in Canada, and perhaps 10% or less in Europe. But when noses are actually counted, the true figures are about half the stated figures (about 20% in the U.S. and 10% in Canada.)”

    Nipsy,

    Hagee is an infidel.

  • 64. Nietzsche-Is-Pietzsche  |  March 5th, 2008 at 3:07 pm

    Wow phnxy-

    Infidel!!

You know it’s getting harder and harder to tell the difference between you guys and the radical Muslims these days.
No I’d say Hagee is just your garden variety huckster shmuck selling salvation with a side of hate to innocent, ignorant, scared people. But let’s not forget, he and your guy McCain are BFFs.

McCain’s screwed up twice in one week and he isn’t even out of the gate yet. This is gonna be too easy.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say I’m not the only person ever to mis-spell something on this blog.

    It’s “misspell,” idiot…

    Phnxy-

Yea yea if you want to hand us the election and look like a racist while doing it please keep up that kind of talk.
You’re only making it easier for us Democrats.

    Nipsy,

I had no idea that being a Mahdi had racial conotations. I thought it had something to do with religion. Please enlighten me.
