RNC Responds to DNC Smear of Senator McCain
March 28th, 2008 at 06:56pm Mark Noonan
From the RNC:
RNC Deputy Chairman Frank Donatelli released the following statement today:
“It is beyond comprehension that Howard Dean would smear John McCain’s character by stating he is a ‘blatant opportunist.’ John McCain served our nation heroically and valiantly and it is absolutely unacceptable that the chairman of the Democratic National Committee would attack Senator McCain for discussing his record with the American people. Dean’s comments are the latest in what has become a troubling pattern where the chairman of the national party has questioned Senator McCain’s character and integrity. Howard Dean owes John McCain an immediate apology and both Senators Clinton and Obama should unequivocally denounce this disgraceful attack.”
DNC Press Release:
After casting aside his image as a so-called “maverick” and morphing into the ultimate Bush Republican in the primaries, John McCain today released a new ad aimed at reintroducing himself to the country. After giving two “major policy speeches” that didn’t include any new policies or proposals, McCain’s new ad gives the American people no idea of what he would do to bring the war in Iraq to a responsible end, address the mortgage crisis confronting American homeowners, or get our economy back on track.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean today issued the following statement on McCain’s ad:
“The American people have been waiting for a president who understands the challenges they face, not another out of touch Bush Republican who promises four more years of the same failed leadership. John McCain can try to reintroduce himself to the country, but he can’t change the fact that he cast aside his principles to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with President Bush for the last seven years. While we honor McCain’s military service, the fact is Americans want a real leader who offers real solutions, not a blatant opportunist who doesn’t understand the economy and is promising to keep our troops in Iraq for 100 years.” (Democratic National Committee, “Dean: New Ad, But No New Ideas From John McCain,” Press Release, 3/28/08)
Non-Partisan Fact Check Groups And Members Of The Media Have Called Democrat Attacks False:
Non-Partisan Factcheck.Org Calls DNC Attacks On 100 Years Comment A “Serious Distortion” And “A Rank Falsehood.” “The DNC’s message portrays McCain as bent on fighting an ‘endless’ war in Iraq . DNC: We can’t afford four more years with a President who fights an endless war in Iraq . … On the war, McCain scoffed at Bush’s call to leave troops in Iraq for 50 years, saying ‘Make it a hundred!’ That of course is a serious distortion of what McCain actually said to a town-hall meeting in New Hampshire back on Jan. 3. …There’s little doubt that McCain is less eager than either Clinton or Obama to bring troops home without further suppression of insurgent attacks. But it’s a rank falsehood for the DNC to accuse McCain of wanting to wage ‘endless war’ based on his support for a presence in Iraq something like the U.S. role in South Korea .” (Factcheck.Org Website, www.factcheck.org, Accessed 3/25/08)
Non-Partisan Politifact.Com Calls Obama Attacks On 100 Years Comment “False.” “Obama twisted McCain’s words in the Cleveland debate. He said, ‘We are bogged down in a war that John McCain now suggests might go on for another 100 years.’ As we explain above, McCain was referring to a peacetime presence, not the war. So we find Obama’s statement False.” (Politifact.Com Website, www.politifact.com, Accessed 3/25/08)
The Washington Post’s Charles Krauthammer: “It’s seldom that you see such a dirty lie.” (Charles Krauthammer, Op-Ed, “‘A Rank Falsehood’,” The Washington Post, 3/28/08)
I have to dispute Krauthammer - dirty lies are really all the Democrats have to run on these days. Democrats, on the whole, lie about everything all the time - they lie about what they want to do; they lie about what Republicans do; heck, they even lie about who they are…they aren’t big government, tax and spend liberals….they’re “progressives.
Democrats have a problem with the truth - it works to their disadvantage; tell the truth about what they want in Iraq, and it will cost them votes; tell the truth about what they want to do on taxation, and it will cost them votes; tell the truth about what they want to do on health care, and it will cost them votes…so, they dance and sing and keep their own plans hidden under a fog of half truths and outright lies, and then turn on the GOP, using one damned lie after another, hoping that come election day, the American people will hate the GOP more than they hate the Democratic party.
Well, in John McCain they’re going to meet their match - a true American hero and a man of his word, he’s going to make the Democrats eat their nasty lies simply by being who he is.

ah - right the old noonan argument. Democrats are liars, theifs, morons, etc.. but Republicans are pure , smart, and virtuous. Grow up Noonan

The 100 years in Iraq is a distortion, but the DNC’s claim that McCain has morphed from maverick to McBush seems very plausible. He was against the Bush tax cuts in 2001/03 now he is for them, he was against waterboarding before and now votes to allow the CIA to continue it use, bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran, is very Bush like, the economy which he admittedly says he knows little about from his recent speech it seems he is going to continue the Bush platform.
It will be tough for him to distinguish from the previous 8 years.

Way to rebut, noodle. Not that I would expect a liberal to.
Oh, and Jerry, for the most part, the last 8 years under Bush have been good. Despite what Democrats and the media say, the economy has done very well. We have not been hit with another terrorist attack. Several of the terrorist nations have given it up. Taxes are relatively low.
Yes, there are a few things that need working on, including border security, but, Dems will not do anything about that, either.

Now wait a minute Will
Noodles presents a very interesting opinion in his post.
Frankly, In the face of such a stunning and logical argument,I dont see how any of us can continue to support a man like McCain or any republican at all.
In fact, consider my mind changed. Now that its all been explained to me, I cant understand how I was so easily mislead. Its all so clear now.
Thank you Noodles. Thank you for clearing my vision and allowing me to really understand for the very first time.
Thank You.
Thank You.

Well, noodles got the part about Dems being liars and thieves correct. I would not characterize the leaders of the Dem party as morons, they know what they are doing, and one cannot be a moron and know how to lie, cheat, and steal like they can.

“…the economy which he admittedly says he knows little about from his recent speech…”Jerry
None of these candidates have any real knowledge about economics or the economy. At least McCain is willing to admit it. His honesty is a breath of fresh air.
Obama demonstrated his complete lack of undertanding of the economy by promising to raise the Capital Gains tax from 15% to 28%. Absolutely brilliant. In addition to slowing the economy by retarding investment, it will result in a net loss of tax revenue as assets will be held instead of sold.
Hillary and Obama have both promised to reaise corporate taxes, which are already the highest of any developed country. This will have the net effect of making us less competitive and will drive companies off shore and increase unemployment. Brilliant!!!!

Stop the presses! The co-author of Caucus of Corruption: The Truth About The New Democratic Majority says that “dirty lies are really all the Democrats have to run on these days.” How did that happen?
Yes, we only ever get the truth from Republicans, especially Senator McCain. The only trouble is you can’t be sure which “truth” it is that you’re speaking about given that he changes positions so fluidly:
We need campaign finance reform. I’m going to disregard the campaign finance law which bears my name.
I’m against Bush tax cuts. I’m for Bush tax cuts.
Waterboarding is torture, is a “defining issue” for America and the Army field manual is good enough. President Bush should veto a law that would restrict interrogations to the Army field manual.
People like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson are “agents of intolerance”. I actively seek out the endorsement of John Hagee who says the Catholic Church is “The Great Whore”.
Senator Straight Talk, that’s him. What does John McCain believe today?
10. js | March 28th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
so look at the campain promises they made in 06
they ran on corruption, but now its twice as corrupt because they really though about giving up earmarks like they promised, and changed thier mind
now its worse than before the election
and how about the ole DNC lies about health care? has there ever been a democrat that ran for president that did NOT use that line? nope, they use it because it sucks in the idiots that want to believe it, not the people that figure out its a lie…
or immediate withdrawal of us forces from iraq….oh, maybe not, now its just end the war…and then again, we still have 8 months for more lies about it…who knows they might suggest another surge!!
but really folks, i never met a politician that didnt lie, its just that most of them i met were solid democrats chasing the votes of the poor folks who want to hear thing that give them hope
they play on that hope, ive come to note thats about all the do though, is play with peoples hopes because they sure dont follow through with all them promises they make!!

“Waterboarding is torture, is a “defining issue” for America and the Army field manual is good enough. President Bush should veto a law that would restrict interrogations to the Army field manual.”
you really are a crackhead DP
you never read the FM, did you
how can you make claims that the survival evasion and excape field manuel contain instructions on waterboarding?
too funny, but some good advice, its best to keep silent so nobody knows you are a fool than to let you lips go a flappin and proving it to be true
think about it, because you have no clue.
trust me its true

js,
You need to go read or reread the places that I’ve quoted Senator McCain on the issue of waterboarding and torture or look them up for yourself (you can probably even find video of his statement that “it [waterboarding] is torture” during the Republican debate last October 24th) and the the press accounts of his calling for President Bush to veto a bill to limit government interrogations to the techniques in the Army field manual before which is the actual issue.
By the way, while you’re calling me a “crackhead”, just know that all you accomplish in so doing is firmly establishing your reputation as someone who substitutes being a rude and insulting human being for actual argument.

Okay I’ve read this site for months.
Diana, Noonan and all the other conservatives on this site, tell me the truth:
1. Do you really believe President Bush has had a successful 8 years?
2. If so, why?
3. Do you believe that he is a good president?
4. Why should McCain be the next president of America?
Please comment on this, I’d really like to know your reasons in one comment.

1. yes, Bush has. Like every president, there have been failures, as well. Welcome to the Life.
2. He turned a deep recession around, which would have been even worse with the events of 9/11 (and, no, I do not blame the recession on Clinton. They happen. That is economics) He has put aside the politics of pretty much ignoring rogue states and international Islamic extremism, and gone after them preemptively. He has pushed for America to be special, and a superpower, rather then wanting the country to be just another average old nation, like what was happening under Clinton and Carter.
3. As a conservative, I think he has done well. There are certainly a few things I disagree with him on, such as illegal immigration, and that he does not defend his policies and successes.
4. He will keep our taxes low, he will do all he can to reduce pork barrel spending, he will limit the scope of the federal gov’t (which was never supposed to be this powerful overall), he will let the economy do its thing, and empower people to be in charge of their own lives, vs the Nanny State the Dems want, and he will continue to preemptively go after the terrorists and the nations that support them.
Sure, I have some disagreements with him, but, such is Life.
That’s a short, quick answer for you, gotta run, but, didn’t want to leave it hanging.
Oh, and BTW, the reason I was on this post this am was to pop a link to an article that, in Howard Deans own words, rebuts Howie Deans current words: http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/03/howard-dean-200.html

lilly06,
I’m puzzled that you’re assigning me with the conservatives. I’m not. I do and have spoken admiringly of some principled conservatives such as the late Senator Barry Goldwater, but that’s mostly because I feel there’s sound reasons to believe he would have been a fierce critic of this President.

Yeah, lilly shows that she has either not been reading this blog or that she lacks the ability to read and process information accurately. She makes me wonder just how rabid and radically far far far far far FAR Left one has to be to NOT be considered “conservative”.
Hint: lilly, look at the name of the blog. If that didn’t tell you it was a conservative blog, then I don’t know what might have penetrated your skill enough to give you a hint. It was Blogs for Bush until a short time ago. Helllloooo!!!!
We have all been predicting that the Dems, having been so successful in the past with their Politics of Personal Destruction, and being so leery of being accurately identified as Liberals, would be going back to the well of lies, slurs, and sliming for their opposition to McCain. So it is no surprise that they have started so early, or that they have sunk so low. It’s what they do.
We have even discussed whether or not the American public is going to catch onto the demonization tactic, and figure out it is a substitute for talking about issues. They got suckered into it during the anti-Bush campaigns because he was an easy target, not terribly likable, not good at articulating his positions. But as I believe that most Dems are really good, honest, people (as opposed to the radicals, who are really and uniformly nasty pieces of work) I have wondered how long they would put up with a party that focused so heavily on mudslinging while the Other Party is the one bringing up issues.
I guess we’ll see.
We’re already seeing anyone who is concerned about the deeply held beliefs of one candidate dismissed as “racist”. We’re aleady seeing personal attacks on those who think that a person should be committed to a colorblind nation, racial equality, and pride in his country if he is going to be its leader.
One of the resident trolls posted a particularly nasty and vile post, even for him, in which in one sentence he slimed McCain and Romney.
I predict that the Dems will sink lower and lower into even nastier gutter politics, and that the resident trolls here will eat it up with a spoon, being attracted to this kind of mess like flies to, well, like flies to excrement.
22. Diana Powe | March 29th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
