Labour Clobbered in British Local Elections

Guess the Brit’s don’t like “New Labour” without Tony Blair:
Gordon Brown admitted that it had been a “disappointing” night for Labour after the party suffered its worst election results for four decades in what was his first proper electoral test as Prime Minister.
With results still coming in from elections around England and Wales, Labour’s projected national vote share was put at just 24 per cent, trailing 20 points behind David Cameron’s Conservatives on 44 per cent, and even behind the Liberal Democrats on 25 per cent.
The margin was similar to the drubbing received by John Major in council elections in 1995, two years before he was ejected from Downing Street by Tony Blair. Latest analysis suggests that the Tories would enjoy a landslide Commons majority of between 138 and 164 seats if the results were repeated in a general election.
Given how pathetic the Tories have been of late, they certainly wouldn’t deserve that sort of a majority…but the policies of Brown are alienating a lot of Brits. True to form, the left wing of Labour - who made Labour un-electable for more than a decade - are prescribing increased taxes and welfare as the cure-all. Tories probably can’t believe their luck.

This is good news for me, as the Tories were in power during my last tour in England, from 1983-1991. I’ll be there in two weeks, for another 3-4 years. I’ll be watching the American elections on the BBC–more biased than ABC, seeBS, NBC,
DNCNN, and MS-LSD combined.

Mark, there’s no indication this is the reason Labour came up short, other than that you always put every issue through some ideological prism.
And perhaps you’ve forgotten that the Liberal Democrats took 25%. If you want to make some kind of tired left/right point, this election doesn’t demonstrate it. 25% social democatic vote + 24 center left = 49%.

Yawn. While millions of Americans are without healthcare, many losing their homes to foreclosure, food and gas prices rising through the roof and a deficit owed to China even our great grandchildren can’t pay off the cons continue to worry about the workings of other countries. Focus, cons focus we have enough problems in America that have been neglected for the past seven years.

Actually Blair lost a lot of support for Labour (Iraq came back to bite him and ID cards etc), Brown’s just carrying on the trend. They actually are in deep sh** because Brown did something the tories normally do he took money from the poor to give to the rich by abolishing the 10p tax rate and lowering the standard 22% rate to 20%. He only raised taxes for the poor, how very Torie! That said I do think middle England will vote Torie, it will make it interesting for us Scots coz we hate them. I can’t wait to see how the SNP (Scottish National Party- in power in Scotland and left of Labour) and the tories get on. Interesting times ahead. Thank god for devolution
