Please note the revised title to this continuing thread…and its because of this:
Surge in fatal shark attacks blamed on global warming
Three decades have passed since the movie Jaws sent terrified bathers scrambling out of the ocean. But as any beach lifeguard knows, there’s still nothing like a gory shark attack to stoke public hysteria and paranoia.
Two deaths in the waters off California and Mexico last week and a spate of shark-inflicted injuries to surfers off Florida’s Atlantic coast have left beachgoers seeking an explanation for a sudden surge in the number of strikes.
In the first four months of this year, there were four fatal shark attacks worldwide, compared with one in the whole of 2007, according to the International Shark Attack File at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville.
‘The one thing that’s affecting shark attacks more than anything else is human activity,’ said Dr George Burgess of Florida University, a shark expert who maintains the database. ‘As the population continues to rise, so does the number of people in the water for recreation. And as long as we have an increase in human hours in the water, we will have an increase in shark bites.’
Some experts suggest that an abundance of seals has attracted high numbers of sharks, while others believe that overfishing has hit their food chain. ‘I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but it’s a convenient excuse,’ Burgess said. Another contributory factor to the location of shark attacks could be global warming and rising sea temperatures. ‘You’ll find that some species will begin to appear in places they didn’t in the past with some regularity,’ he said.
It couldn’t possibly be, ya know?, that sharks pretty much eat whatever comes to hand and if you happen to be in the “shark lunch position” (that would be swimming in the ocean, for you liberals out there), you might well end up as, well, a shark’s lunch?
Global warming has, as they say, jumped the shark - it is now the single most idiotic thing in the world, simply by fact that people are idiotically blaming it for everything…including sharks acting like sharks.

Did you read the article or just scan for a blog post premise? The article didn’t suggest warming is causing sharks to behave differently, but could be creating more hospitable water in places sharks aren’t often seen.
Seemed pretty clear - idle speculation that water temperature may or may not change migration patterns.
This seems like some kind of a pattern with you - and conservatives in general. There’s some concept that you don’t live in an interconnected world. You live in a world where all changes happen in isolation, and it’s not possible for them to cascade outwards. Convenient worldview when you need someway to self-justify destroying our environmental standards.
But I’ll assume you’re not so naive, and you actually read the article. So the question becomes, is it just a really slow news day?

Your argument might be plausible if the shark attacks were coming in waters never previously known for sharks. If such ocean waters can even be found. However, the idiocy of the headline and the article is that sharks have ALWAYS congregated off of New Smyrna Beach.
Has it occured to your feeble mind that perhaps the incidence of shark attack reports is related to a greater number of humans at the beach. Or possibly because journalism has degenerated into sensationalism and fear mongering.

It’s not “my argument”. Nor does it really appear to be the article’s.
“My argument” is that the article isn’t claiming it’s changing the nature of sharks, as Mark mockingly claims.
The article was simply idle speculation, which was quite clear in it’s content as well as tone. Any of the enumerated factors in the article, including more swimmers, may have merit, or may not. Or it could simply be a statistical fluke. There’s no evidence either way, at least as offered by the article (or you).

If you combine the proliferation of sharks, due to their being hunted and killed less over the past decade or so, with more and more people living and going to the beach, it adds up to more recorded shark attacks. Operative word is “recorded.”
Water temp changes of a few degrees here or there does not make a difference, particularly with the species who are the most likely to attack with devastating results (Mako, Tiger, Bull, Great White, White Tip, Reef, a few others) and where the attacks occur.

Hey Knucklehead we’ve seen on this blog and others the statistics kept by those global warming gurus who have said that ocean water temperatures have not risen. Why do they even have to mention that rising sea temperatures and global warming could be to blame? Seems to me the only logical bit of information in the whole article was that when you put more people in the ocean near sharks then more people stand a chance to get bitten.
It’s really simple math: If there are more news stories that the world is coming to an end because we’re burning up like no time before, then more people will think that global warming is occurring. If there are zero news stories explaining that global temperatures are on a steady fall since 1998, then there will be far fewer people who believe that we are heading to a mini ice age - which, of course, is far more deadly than a little global warming.
