Rich Fools Update
May 4th, 2008 at 03:28pm Mark Noonan
For parents who obsessively green every aspect of their tykes’ lives, there’s a bit of good news: A new organic preschool, Le Petit Paradis, is accepting students for the fall. Located in a former shoe store on Third Avenue near 93rd Street, the school is currently being redone with environmentally friendly wall paints, bamboo floors, and low-flow toilets. Even the puzzles will be made of wood, not plastic. Its founder, Christina Houri, a French expat and former teacher at Le Jardin à L’Ouest, was inspired to green things up by the “Al Gore movie” and images of dying polar bears, she says. Her educational philosophy combines Montessori’s (“They will learn to do their own juice”) with Bank Street’s developmental-interactive approach, and the $12,995 tuition includes total French immersion. But for many families, the best thing about Le Petit Paradis might be that it’s still accepting applications. Most preschool acceptance letters were mailed out last month. “Any preschool—green or not—is going to draw people,” says Pamela Weinberg, co-author of City Baby: The Ultimate Guide for New York City Parents From Pregnancy to Preschool. “There are not enough.”
Stuff White People Like accurately sums it up:
In spite of the recent ban on the New York Times, New York Magazine came through with an essential article for white person research. It seems as though regular private schools are simply not white enough for many parents. As a result a French ex-pat in New York has opened a French language Preschool, in New York, with $13,000 tuition, features environmentally friendly products and organic food.
This school also helps to give white parents one more reason for not sending their children to public school. “Public schools don’t have organic food, I can’t have my child eating pesticides. So I’m not racist, I’m just concerned over the food health of my child.”
Inside the joke, of course, is the kernel of truth - the people who will pay this 13 grand are very likely to be people who claim to support the public schools, but wouldn’t dream of sending their own children to one. Between theory and practice is often a wide gap - and nothing ever wider than the gap between the theories and practices of rich people, especially liberal rich people (and, yes, I’m sure there will be a Republican or two involved here - but if you think that Joe Sixpack GOP-base would have anything to do with this nonsense then you’re ready to purchase the Brooklyn Bridge). Another small observation - when liberals say “tax the rich”, they don’t mean adding a surcharge to the 13 grand tuition in order to help subsidise public schools…no, they actually want you and me (the aforementioned Joe Sixpacks, in our varied manifestations) to pony up.

“…when liberals say “tax the rich”, they don’t mean adding a surcharge to the 13 grand tuition in order to help subsidise public schools…no, they actually want you and me (the aforementioned Joe Sixpacks, in our varied manifestations) to pony up.”
if these folks’ incomes reach the level where they’d be considered “rich” enough to meet some new tax threshold then they would be taxes the same as any other person at that level. through their taxes (at whatever level), don’t they continue to pay for (support) public education even if they don’t use it? perhaps they need vouchers so they can show how much they don’t support public education by pulling their taxes from the system?

My beef is a minor one. I can’t tell if Mark is trying to make fun of the “global warming” nature of the school or that the woman who runs it is a French ex pat or all of the above. The us against them nature about “liberals” again is just political rhetoric when it comes to private schools. Joe SixPack generally is not going to sacrifice his comfort for the education of his children until they get to a point that they have proven they are worthy of education past high school. In the US the best school at that point outside the stilted realm of financial aid is a state school close to home for economic reasons. The brightest students still do not go to the best schools because there usually is never enough money. The leite are able to send their mediocre offspring to Brown and Harvard and Yale as legacies because that’s their system.
Back to my beef. New York City is the exception rather than the rule because of the sheer magnitude of the affulence in Manhattan. Thirteen thousand for pre K may sound like a lot of money but when you compare that to 7 thousand a year in Roanoke, VA for Roanoke Catholic School it doesn’t seem like such a wide disparity when you consider the Manhattan median income is $75 556/year and the Roanoke median is $30 719. So RCS is 23% of the median while Le Petit is only 17,5 % of the median in Manhattan.
3. Timothy Horrigan | May 4th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Do you have any actual evidence, Mark, for your claims about “liberals” and their educational choices? Also, most liberals are not rich… just as most conservatives aren’t rich either. And am I reading too much into your commentary, or were you implying that there is something wrong with being in favor of public schools?
4. Mark Noonan | May 4th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Gaby,
13k for pre-school at Paradis; 5.7k for kindergarten (if a parishoner - and converting to Catholicism is never a bad thing, so have at it) at the Catholic school…and even for a non-parishoner, the most expensive year you’ll run across is 12th grade at 8.8k. And if I’m not mistaken, pre-school generally doesn’t run a full day…
The price is absurd; the rationale behind the school is absurd…and, God bless ‘em…spend your money on that, if you like…but I’ll bet any amount that a survey of the parents will show a very large majority consider themselves liberals and adamant supporters of the public school system.
5. Mark Noonan | May 4th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
Timothy,
Surveys and exit polling data over the past few decades indicate the higher the income, the more apt to be liberal - and if you think that rich people in NYC are Republican, then you’ve got rocks in your head. I’m sure there are a few, but overwhelmingly the rich of NYC (and San Francisco, and Los Angeles, and Boston, etc, etc, etc) are liberals…and its a reasonable assumption that even the GOPers in the area are of a more liberal-than-usual variety.
The middle class is conservative - liberals are concentrated in the poor and the rich.
6. Casper | May 4th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
“The middle class is conservative - liberals are concentrated in the poor and the rich.”
Prove it please.
7. Mark Noonan | May 4th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Casper,
Prove it? Haven’t you been paying attention for the past few decades? When’s the last time a GOPer carried South Central LA or Malibu?
8. Casper | May 4th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Mark,
And that proves what?
I’m sure we could find rich conservative areas, just as I’m sure we could find middle class liberal areas, both disprove your statement. I know a lot of middle class liberals and conservatives, probably about an equal number of both.
9. congressive | May 4th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
What could you POSSIBLY have against the word “organic?” Really. I swear sometimes the Republican mantra is, if it’s good for the planet and all the people who live on it, kill it.
The more that institutions and individuals demand certified organic food, the CHEAPER it becomes, and the safer the food and the water that runs off the farms becomes.
But y’all wanna save a few pennies now so you can afford to extract that tumor from your baby’s brains in ten years.
“environmentally friendly wall paints, bamboo floors, and low-flow toilets” Maybe this explains everything. Republicans intentionally submit their babies to lead, formaldehyde and sewage plant spills, who then grow up to vote for George Bush.
It’s beginning to make sense.
10. Gabrielle Deroscheres | May 4th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Okay Mark it’s tough for me not to make direct comaprisons because I’m a finance person. Here’s one of the finest Pre K through 12 Catholic schools in the world the Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York City as fixture in academic excellence since 1881 when it was founded by the RSCJ. Their pre k tuition is $30 690 per student per year.
I doubt somehow if all of the parents of the 670 young women that attend could possibly be painted with a brush denoting them all “liberal” or fools.
11. Kahn | May 5th, 2008 at 1:27 am
Timothy, I don’t know about your statement taht most liberals are not rich. Most Democrats may not be rich. Agreed. But that party seems driven by an elite of limousine liberals that are indeed rich.
12. What? | May 5th, 2008 at 3:13 am
Mark writes,
“but if you think that Joe Sixpack GOP-base would have anything to do with this nonsense then you’re ready to purchase the Brooklyn Bridge”
Mark, how do you think people get rich? It is by sending your kids to these schools that the wealthy build social networks through which they conduct business.
Standford, Harvard, and Yale don’t provide educations worth substantially more than other good schools around the country. The Ivy Leagues provide the access to a network of rich people in places of power. This is why attending those schools is a more valuable experience than attending UC Berkeley.
Thinking that such schools, be they at the kindergarten level or the university level, are nonsense would be an inaccurate conclusion. I also think you are wrong that “Joe Sixpack” believe this. The middle class might find the exercise silly but they certainly understand the value behind it and would want their children to be a part of it.
Why would they? Financial success in this country is more about who you know than what you know. Enrolling a child early on in schools with other children from wealthy familes is a good start in making sure the child has access to the social networks that lead to greater opportunities in the future. The schools also provide the parents with network opportunities.
Also, to believe that most wealthy conservatives are sending their kids to local number 9 is just being naive.
Also, this doesn’t make sense:
“Another small observation - when liberals say “tax the rich”, they don’t mean adding a surcharge to the 13 grand tuition in order to help subsidise public schools…no, they actually want you and me (the aforementioned Joe Sixpacks, in our varied manifestations) to pony up.”
Unless you happen to have more money than you let on, I certainly don’t count you amongst the rich I would like to see taxed at a higher rate.
A surcharge here might be appropriate but I think a simple rise in the income tax level amongst the top 1% - 3% would be better.

11. Kahn | May 5th, 2008 at 1:27 am
Are you kidding, mon? And the GOP isn’t “driven by an elite” of men who use the word “family” for profit, contracting CEOs and the kind of folk who can afford to see Senator McCain at the Denver Petroleum Club?
The game is as simple as making roux; the goal is to get as few rich men as possible with everything to gain to get as many poor and middle folk as possible with everything to lose to vote for their guy. The commoners you see at the conventions are there as tokens so it doesn’t look so much like a coronation and more like one of those music videos.
14. Odamo Sese Omoko | May 5th, 2008 at 6:59 am
And the real point is that wealthy conservatives are mostly sending their kids to Christian private schools. that do prepare them for the next level, Secular Ivy, Christian Ivy, Wellesley, MIT, RISD and so on.
15. phnx | May 5th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Frankly I don’t care who sends their kids to private schools or how much they pay. The real discussion is why these same liberals who send their kids to expensive private schools are eager to fight against vouchers which would give poor children access to quality education?
Regardless of the motives, the result is condemning generation after generation to education systems which produce functional illiterates.
Liberal elites don’t believe that joe sixpack is smart enough and can be trusted to make the right decisions for themselves and their children. Just look at their convoluted selection process for their Presidential candidate where super delegates can over rule the will of the people.

Liberal elites don’t believe that joe sixpack is smart enough and can be trusted to make the right decisions for themselves and their children.
The problem is that conservative elites who also send their kids to private schools feel the same way about Joe SixPack yet they encourage him to vote GOP because they say they share Joe SixPacks “values.”
18. phnx | May 5th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
Ahhhhh Pain, unlike liberal elites, conservative elites are not opposed to providing an opportunity for the kids of Joe & Jane six pack for CHOOSING a better education for their kids.
Liberal elites think that they know what is better for the kids of Joe and Jane six pack. Conservatives, elite an otherwise, would prefer to let Joe and Jane decide for themselves.
19. Pain | May 5th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
So what exactly are these liberal elites doing to keep Joe and Jane Six pack’s kids from having school choice?
20. Nate | May 6th, 2008 at 12:47 am
“vouchers which would give poor children access to quality education”
too bad one doesn’t necessarily lead to the other
21. phnx | May 6th, 2008 at 12:51 am
You are kidding right? The leftists liberals have spent millions defeating voucher plans. Much of the finding comes from the NEA, supported by People for the American way, another elitist leftist group.
“People For the American Way has consistently opposed school vouchers and tuition tax credit programs that divert scarce education funding away from public schools. PFAW is committed to defeating legislation and initiatives which create voucher and tuition tax credit programs.”
Check out their board of directors. Led by ALec Baldwin, its a who’s who of liberal elites.
22. Nate | May 6th, 2008 at 12:59 am
and how does anything in your comment counter reality? you can shout until your blue in the face that some folks are against vouchers. that doesn’t change the fact that vouchers don’t necessarily lead to poor children getting access to quality education. no, not kidding at all.
23. What? | May 6th, 2008 at 1:15 am
Nate,
Explaining why school vouchers to people on this site is a fruitless chore. I have tried. I have pointed to other countries with excellent public school systems. I have explained that vouchers would only encourage greater inequality. I have pointed out that public schools in wealthy communties are better than the nearby private schools. None of this works.
24. What? | May 6th, 2008 at 1:18 am
Ha, perhaps I should re-evaluate my own private school education. That first line should read:
“Explaining why school voucher are a bad idea . . .”
25. Pain | May 6th, 2008 at 5:53 am
21. phnx | May 6th, 2008 at 12:51 am
We understand now. Vouchers would be a means by which to allow Middle Class parents to opt out of the public school system yet recieve public money to send their children to religous private schools. It is another front in the culture wars; a means to an end to remove the crumbling wall between church and state.
Were private schools really that far superior in instructing young human beings this would be a slam dunk. The US Department of Education found some striking similarities in the private school testing grades among 4 through 8 graders and public schook children in the same grades.
Most suprising to Us during Our research was this blurb from a 2006 study “In grade 4, Catholic and Lutheran schools were compared separately to public schools. For both reading and mathematics, the results were similar to those based on all private schools. In grade 8, Catholic, Lutheran, and Conservative Christian schools were each compared to public schools. For Catholic and Lutheran schools for both reading and mathematics, the results were again similar to those based on all private schools. For Conservative Christian schools, the average adjusted school mean in reading was not significantly different from that of public schools. In mathematics, the average adjusted school mean for Conservative Christian schools was significantly lower than that of public schools.”
So the bottom line phnx is that taxpayers who do want their monies to go to the support of religious schools would be more likely not to support school vouchers and in this We would agree that people who describe themselves as liberals would more likely fall into that category. Thus this becomes a matter of ideology and opinion where there is no real right or wrong, just desired and undesired outcomes.
26. Danish Artist | May 6th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
Why do many poor inner city parents want school vouchers?
’nuff said.
It used to be for liberals that “It’s for the children.” was sufficient reason for any social program or expenditure.
But of course, the libs would lose control with vouchers.
