John McCain on the Fundamentals of Liberty

by Mark Noonan on May 8th, 2008 at 10:43am

The contrasts between McCain’s vision and Obama’s grows more stark all the time - mostly because McCain gets it, while Obama wallows in the morass of liberal amorality:

There is a tendency in our age to accede to the spurious excuse of moral relativism and turn away from the harshest examples of man’s inhumanity to man; to ignore the darker side of human nature that encroaches upon our decency by subtle degree. There are many reasons for this. Blessed with opportunity, and intent on the challenges of work and family, our own lives often seem too full and hectic to take notice of offenses that seem distant from our own reality. There is also the threat in a society passionate about its liberty that we can become desensitized to the dehumanizing effect of the obscenity and hostility that pervades much of popular culture. It is in our nature as Americans to see the good in things; to face even serious adversity with hope and optimism. And yet, with so much good in the world, for all the progress of humanity, in which our nation has played such an admirable and important role, evil still exists in the world. It preys upon human dignity, assaults the innocence of children, debases our self- respect and the respect we are morally obliged to pay each other, and assails the great, animating truths we believe to be self-evident – that all people have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness — by subjecting countless human beings to abuse, persecution and even slavery…

…There is no right more fundamental to a free society than the free practice of religion. Behind walls of prisons and persecuted before our very eyes in places like China, Iran, Burma, Sudan, North Korea and Saudi Arabia are tens-of-thousands of people whose only crime is to worship God in their own way. No society that denies religious freedom can ever rightly claim to be good in some other way. And no person can ever be true to any faith that believes in the dignity of all human life if they do not act out of concern for those whose dignity is assailed because of their faith. As President, I intend to make religious freedom a subject of great importance for the United States in our relations with other nations. I will work in close concert with democratic allies to raise the prominence of religious freedom in every available forum. Whether in bilateral negotiations, or in various multi-national o rganizations to which America belongs, I will make respect for the basic principle of religious freedom a priority in international relations…

…Our nation, whose founders sacrificed for the belief that we would be an example to the world, has long appreciated that our freedom confers responsibilities on us all, and among them, is our respect for the freedom of others. Ours is not a perfect history. But it is a history distinguished by our pursuit of this ideal. We have always been a country of hope and of ideals, even of audacity in our belief that all good things are possible here and wherever the Rights of Man are respected. As we pursue greater individual freedom and economic opportunity, as we take advantage of new technologies and explore a world more accessible to more people than ever before, we must be diligent in our support of those rights, and in our active opposition to the enemies of human dignity in our own society and in all the dark corners of the world. We must remember that our freedoms are not only defended by our diplo macy and military power but, very importantly, by the decency and respect with which we treat one another, and by our belief that as we our dignity is entitled to respect so are we obliged to respect and defend the dignity of others. Ours is a nation with a conscience, and thank God we are. As William Wilberforce said so many years ago, “When we think of eternity, and of the future consequences of all human conduct, what is there in this life that should make any man contradict the dictates of his conscience, the principles of justice, the laws of religion, and of God?”

Obama and his fellow liberals talk a great game about hope and humanity, but their real goal is an enslaved humanity, because they really view the world as a hopeless place. Lacking any real faith in God and thus any hope for the life of the world to come, they view the world through the dark, narrow eyes of despair, and only seek to make misery more palatable for most, while desperately clinging to their own personal wealth and privilege. The sickest joke of our modern world is a liberal - like Obama - who talks of hope but also tells the tale again and again about how this or that person just can’t make it unless Obama - or someone like him - graciously comes along to save the day. John McCain deals in reality - the harsh realities of the world, but also the reality of God, and his justice in the world - and the resultant need for each of us to do what we can, where we can, to make things actually better for the people around us. The difference is best described as the difference between “ah, you poor, helpless person; let me sustain you just above complete misery” and “hello, brother, let me lend you a hand so that you, too, may take your rightful place in the world”.

The battle is joined - and which world do you want?

    Noonan,

Do you go back a day or two later and when reading the crap you spew, say to yourself…”no, I didn’t write that. What was I thinking. I sound like an ass.”

You should. You’re making a fool of yourself, and your blog.

    Get a grip

    Another comical thread.

“Obama and his fellow liberals talk a great game about hope and humanity”

To liberals, hope brought on by government is good. Hope brought on by religion is bad.

Eliminating hope by other means is the number goal of liberals. This matches closely with their theory that “you Americans cannot survive with us”, “you can’t succeed in life without our policies”, etc. etc.

Supression of religious practice is their first step. They are succeeding in removing religious expression or practive anywhere in public.

Who will the hopeless turn to?

    Where do they turn now?

Who made them hopeless to begin with?

Wow, middle. Accurately named for a brain-dead gesture.

I’m confused, when did America become a Theocracy? and when did ‘Obama the Liberal’ become an Atheist?

  7. Some Assembly Required says:

DA, the middle finger was not a brain-dead gesture. It dates back to the 100 year war between England and France. Where the english had long bows, the French would cut off their middle fingers to prevent them from firing this devastating weapon (at the time). At the end of the war the English would stick up their middle fingers more or less saying I still got it to their french enemies. So in the spirit of history it’s not a brain-dead response. Much like saluting.

  8. Desein Libsbane says:

Actually, the middle finger gesture dates back to the days of ancient Rome.

  9. Some Assembly Required says:

DL, I was under the impression that ‘the finger’ dates back past Rome but not specifically ‘the middle finger’. Though I could be wrong.

muslims have a moral code !

  11. Desein Libsbane says:

It was a common insult, so much so Caligula would extend his middle-finger to be kissed by those he wished to insult.

  12. Some Assembly Required says:

The earliest recorded mention of the middle finger is a play “The Clouds”, written by the Greek Aristophanes in 423 B.C. Aside from this the most widely acknowledged origin was from Caligula. Turns out the origin of it in the 100 year war is the most commonly known misconception.

  13. Canadian Observer says:

Throughout history, Liberal ideals have advanced mankind; whereas, ultra-conservatism, wrapped in religious dogma, has led to periods of strife and lapses into darkness, not particularly beneficial to the human race.

This is simply an unbelievable smear. Where in the world would you get this idea about Barack Obama? What do you know of Obama’s faith? How can one man judge another man’s faith?

This is how you intend to fight, per your earlier “gut-check” post? I guess anything goes. Shameful.

  15. Danish Artist says:

CO, liberalism that advanced mankind was CLASSIC LIBERALISM, which advanced patriotism, liberty and individualism.

Today’s liberalism does nothing of the sort. the second half of your statement “has led to periods of strife and lapses into darkness, not particularly beneficial to the human race” accurately describes modern liberalism. Modern liberalism strongly equates and we have seen it to socialism where the individual is frowned upon, patriotism is bad and liberty attacked.

CLASSIC LIBERALISM is a forgotten stranger with today’s Democratic party.

    Nice try.

  16. Frank Mc says:

“has led to periods of strife and lapses into darkness, not particularly beneficial to the human race”

This accurately describes what conservatism has done throughout history….

    Nice Try, Danish.

It continually amazes me, and saddens me, that there are people that can’t seek to attain the ideals expressed here without their belief in the supernatural.

You can not, and will not, attain your ideals without recognizing that your fellow human is the way to it. You have your heads in the sky, abstaining from reality and rational thought.

Can you do nothing as a mere human being? Are you too weak to stand on your own?

  18. 42 says:

Noonan’s for religious freedom as long as it’s his religion…this is a guy who said feeding a starving Buddhist would be a wast of time if the Buddhist didn’t accept Jesus.

Should the Mormon group in Texas have been able to continue their practices?

Should some African witch doctor be able to slit the throat of a goat in public?

Should Rastafarians be exempt from drug laws?

Thank God Obama gets it, while McCain just panders to useful idiots.

  19. SEW says:

“If not, then you have no conception at all of the basic tenets of liberal principles.” CO

liberal principles? Marxism? Government control? Redistribution of wealth? Taxation? Socialized medicine?

  20. Danish Artist says:

Frank - uh, wow, your supporting reasons are none existent. Nice try, but I’ll go with reality rather than liberal fantasy.

CO, you have no clue. Liberals are trying to set up the socialist/communist theory of government, the same classless society. Individualism has no role in that form of government. Everything is for the “common good”. You should have listened to the previous speeches of Kennedy, Clinton and others talking down the individual and praising everything for the common good.

“We must stop thinking of the individual and start thinking about what is best for society.” Hillary Clinton 1993

Krushchev said “Comrades, We must abolish the cult of the individual decisively, once and for all.”

    Hmmmmmmm…..sounds pretty similar….coincidence?

Modern Liberals have embraced the ideas of Marx, Stalin, Lenin and Mao - maybe not using genocide, but socialist none the less. It is only a question of enforcement and finance. How will libs pay for everything that they want other than confiscating it from the public?

Classical liberals are close to the Federalists.

Sorry, CO but your modern liberals are not for the individual and all legislation The Great Society and other social programs have hurt society as a whole.

  21. Kahn says:

D.A. - Some people might consider the millions of children killed by abortion the “missing” genocide piece of the liberal-socialist puzzle.
