Obama Must Distance Himself From Anti-Catholic and Anti-Religious Bigots

Given that Obama’s so-called Catholic Advisory Council is made up exclusively of people who dissent from Church teaching on abortion, embryonic stem cell research and school vouchers, it is important that Obama ensure that no overtly anti-Catholic or anti-religious people are on his team. Given Obama’s problems with Wright’s racist anti-Americanism, it is also important that he make it clear that genuine people of faith have a place at the table - unfortunately, Obama’s team makes room for the bigots on matters of religion - from the Catholic League:

Catholic League president Bill Donohue commented today on the religious divide which is splitting Sen. Obama’s supporters:

“The secularization of the Democratic party, which first became evident in the 1972 presidential race, was openly challenged by Barack Obama when he spoke at the 2004 Democratic presidential convention. To his credit, he has since galvanized people of faith to rally to his side, but ever since his problems with Rev. Wright he has come under fire by radical secularists. In short, there is a tug of war going on among Democratic activists pitting the secularists against the faithful.

“In today’s Chicago Tribune, Katha Pollitt not only criticizes Rev. Wright, she takes the opportunity to smear almost the entire nation. She says that ‘thanks to Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., the Democrats have got religion and everything that goes with it—weirdness, wrath, insult, blowhardiness, vanity, paranoia, divisiveness and trouble.’ Her hatred of religion wouldn’t matter so much if she were simply a writer for the Nation. However, she is also a prominent supporter of Sen. Obama: She joined hands with Frances Kissling, a notorious anti-Catholic, to endorse him in a publicly signed statement.

“We know where Pollitt is coming from. After all, any person who likes Catholic bashing is well known to the Catholic League. For example, when the Brooklyn Museum of Art displayed a portrait of Our Blessed Mother adorned with elephant dung and pictures of vaginas and anuses, she opined that ‘The Holy Virgin Mary is a funny, jazzy, rather sweet painting.’

“Obama is not responsible for Pollitt’s bigotry and he does not need to renounce her. But what he must do is start the purge—he must rid his ranks of those who want to silence religion. First out of the box to aid him must be Catholics. They can cite what Pope Benedict XVI recently said in Washington: ‘Any tendency to treat religion as a private matter must be resisted.’ Purging the Pollitts from his base would reassure the faithful that they have a place in his campaign.”

Regardless of what else happens, we must ensure in America that the rights of the overwhelming majority - Christians - are protected against discrimination and are assured that at the highest levels of American government there are only people with a deep and abiding respect for the religious beliefs of the American people. We daren’t let happen here what happened in Europe - where religion was forced out of the public square until apathy overtook the people, and now Europe is in demographic crisis for lack of faith.

Among the many problems with the Democratic party is the unfortunate way they make a home for some of the worst sorts of anti-religious bigots - people who drip with contempt and hatred for the divine and for those who believe in God. It is all well and good for a President to say he’s with us, but we must rest assured that the people he appoints to bureaucratic and judicial office will not in any way, shape or form countenance anti-religious bigotry - and we can only be sure if we know in advance that such people are unwelcome prior to a person taking office.

    You told us that Obama must denounce Wright. Obama did. You then told us that this wasn’t enough. Why would this instance be any different?

    Really, your faux concern for Obama’s electoral chances is really cute. You consistently ignore or downplay instance of anti-Catholic bigotry in your own party (for example, John McCain’s acceptance of an endorsement by John Hagee), while crying foul at every perceived slight by a Democrat.

    In the end, though, you really shouldn’t be concerned. Its becoming increasingly obvious that your attacks on Obama have no effect, as evidenced by repeated polls that show Obama and Democrats in general trouncing McCain and Republicans.

    Interesting. This headline implies SOOOO much. It implies that you really think Obama will win in November, otherwise you would write “Don’t worry, Obama will lose because he won’t distance himself bla bla bla.”

    It implies that IF Obama distanced himself, he would win YOUR vote, which of course, ain’t gonna happen no matter what he does.

    Your post implies you actually believe he will be appointing people to bureaucratic and judicial offices, and that you fear he will overlook religious wingers - again, you think he will win.

    This reads like a concession speech. It appears we have a winner.

    And just as I think I can get behind Obama, he cheerleads liquid coal as one solution to the energy crisis. Score one for the extraction industries.

    And it appears he will vote to extend funding for the so-called war. Score one for the industrial military complex.

    And although he has distanced himself from Wright, he still calls himself a Christian. Score one for you believers in the divine mystic.

    Interesting times.

    It gets deep….obama runnin about denying his pastor, denying his campain employee’s…denying his past and his involvement with islam…denying his connections to organized criminal activity…he even denies the right of parents to know about thier teenage daughters abortions….

    is that all it takes to become clean and presentable to the public….just to denounce your record….what ever happened to being a man…and standing up and owning your own mess….instead of double talking and lying to the people around you….ya…its a lie…obama is not a hollow suit…he is filled with lies….and that makes him less than the ideal candidate for the oval office…

    well…gotta scoot…if this works for obama…im going to deny middleclassmanship and grab hold of a congressional seat…i hear that they make great money pushing concessions for business constituents in government contracts…shoot….people like pelosi and reid have made fortunes on it….they just deny anything is wrong and its ok….i guess obama learned from them…

    Curious that this would run on your blog on the same day as the Reverend John Hagee sends a letter of apology to the Catholic League’s president William Donohue. I had not read the Katha Pollitt piece and I have passed this around to my staff in the wake of the analysis of the Hagee apology.

    I agree that those who use religion for political gain should be removed from any political campaign even if that person is the party nominee. There is no place for religion in politics; there is however an open door and open windows to Faith.

    our enemies want us to forget religion so they can talk politics, that way the corruption and the immorality can be addressed as a normal business factor, without anyone bringing in a sense of right and wrong…the truth is…christians are told to gather together…we are a flock….our leader is Jesus…and to reject our faith because we want competent, moral leadership should be an affront to everything America stands for….religion can do without politics just fine…but politics without religions moral code is nothing more than a setting for thieves, liars, and murderers to hide thier activities….

    Focusing on the political in the realm of politics has no detriment to one’s personal faith. Now on the other hand religion can suffer if it cannot can foothold in the political sphere. As you have seen over the last seven year politics with the veneer of a religious moral code, and a need to pander to those who live by that code for votes, has enabled exactly the sort of cover up of ilicit activity that you noted.

    I am more than willing to discuss religion politics the errors of the Liberals and Conservatives and anything else at our space where free and open discourse is always encouraged.

    I really don’t think Noonan has given McCain a pass on Hagee. I just think that many on the political Right just realize that saying nothing is better than opening the whole can of worms. I think both the Wright issue and the Hagee issue are best left up to the voters in November.

    You have succeeded in trotting out every bit of theocratic support for your cause. For the life of me i cannot see what this has to do with Obama having Ms Pollitt or Ms Kissling in his camp. They may have ideas that I personally disagree with but they are fertile minds. But on to your monologue. H Res 888 you describe as if it were actually passed into law! It was merely introduced in the House by 84 Republican members and sits, where it belongs, in a committee waiting to die full stop.

    And the case you cite actually the concurring opinion of one Justice David Brewer in the case of The Church of the Holy Trinity v US 143 US 547 [1892]. An old chestnut for the theocracy crowd but this is not even a case about religion it is about the right of any concern to bring foreign labor into the United States. I laugh myself into a belly ache the very instant I read the quote! Imagine a modern conservative who wants to seal the borders having to use a religious quote from a case about bringing a foreign minister into America to work! Talk about the ironies and inveiglements of the right wing. I thank you ser for I needed a good laugh on such a hectic day with the next cyclone heading for Myanmar and the destruction in China to cover.

    Most cited the Bible, yes very well done and the book most taught in Anglican schools right through to Oxford and Cambridge both of which I know very well. I would put to you that there was very little else to base the nation on considering there were no secular democracies in existence until the Founding Fathers decided to break away from the British Crown.

    All very well and good that you see the Founding fathers as giving credence to your religion and that this justifies your existence in the Universe beyond that of a dolphin or a very tall Redwood somehow. All fine with me. But two things that I find amazing I feel I must touch upon. Initially, that the resolution was written clearly to mean Christianity and that words is not used in the entire bill and secondarily that you feel in a nation that is 78% Christian that there is still not enough Christianity to go around. I would posit that you are merely annoyed and here is that word again offended that secularism tends to crowd out Religion but can work hand in glove with Faith.

    “Pastor Hagee Apologizes For Anti-Catholic Remarks” - AP

    WASHINGTON (AP) - John Hagee, an influential Texas televangelist who endorsed John McCain, apologized to Catholics Tuesday for his stinging criticism of the Roman Catholic Church and for having “emphasized the darkest chapters in the history of Catholic and Protestant relations with the Jews.”

    Hagee’s support for McCain has drawn cries of outrage from some Catholic leaders who have called on McCain to reject Hagee’s endorsement. The likely Republican nominee has said he does not agree with some of Hagee’s past comments, but did not reject his support.

    In a letter to William Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Civil and Religious Rights, Hagee wrote: “Out of a desire to advance a greater unity among Catholics and evangelicals in promoting the common good, I want to express my deep regret for any comments that Catholics have found hurtful.”

    Donohue, one of Hagee’s sharpest critics, said he accepted the apology and planned to meet with Hagee Thursday in New York.

    “I got what I wanted,” Donohue said in an interview. “He’s seen the light, as they like to say. So for me it’s over.”

It’s who we are; what we live for, what we die for; what we gather together for, it’s what keeps us together, it’s what keeps America together, it’s what keeps the world together, it’s what makes us civilized and civilization more peaceful and prosperous…because we help each other along lifes way through total reliance on Almighty God to show us the way through our Faith in Him and Him alone.

    That’s why I hope America will not lose sight of these past blessings and remember that God is who made it all possible. If they do, then all these continued God-given blessings will be lost for eternity, because He doesn’t favor a Nation who disobeys Him.

    The main important thing - The law has a moral basis, and that basis being found in the Word of God, which is what our Founding Fathers knew so well, and is why they created the Constitution from an understanding of the only Law, which is the Law of God, and all other laws must stem from them…for if they are cut off from the Law of God then a society is prone to licentiousness, and therefore, God turns away His blessings and thus, is how Great Nation are brought low.

    We must pray in earnest for America over the next five months!!

    actually cavalor, i am not near as impressed with your reply as you are…as you attempt to superficially ignore the real jist of the topic that was addressed..otherwise you would have certainly attempted to discredit the facts contained within the resolution instead of beat around the bush so to speak..and cry out how such a noble resolution was swept under the rug by the Demoncrats…

    i dont think some folks understand what christainity really is…when you become a christian…the Holy Spirit descends on you….for life…you cant shake Him off…he condemns your sin…in your own heart…making you know that there is a right and a wrong…compelling you to amend your sinful nature…giving you the desire to overcome those things of the flesh…to grow in Spirit instead of the flesh…..because Spirit lives forever…and the flesh dies….just like the truth is eternal….and lies die one after the other in the light of truth….

    Being as well ground in my metaphysics as I am and having a very powerful understanding of the Almighty I need no lessons from men on what is and is not damaging to one’s Soul. The fact is you seek to make points to justify your religion over all else in Terra not to spread Faith and compassion for your Fellow Man regardless of his Religion.

    All religions can corrupt Islam as well as Christianity has done this for sundry and uncalled for reasons across the breadth of time. My point is you have a Right, an unalienable right to you Faith and the practice thereof. What you do not have in America is the right to impose law to give favor to the organized religion that you profess allegiance to for political gain and to subjugate the will of the people by doing so. That js is a corruption of Democracy writ large. If you want America to be a nation ruled by Christian law say so and be blunt about it man. Change the laws and pay taxes out of your church coffers and run clerical candidates and seat judges from parishes far and wide. But I tell you from the land where I dwell that it cannot be done by subterfuge or connivance. All that will do is lead you to ruin. If America wishes to be a secular nation and you try to force Theocracy down her throat she will rise up and cause a great noise to fall upon the heads of those who think like you and the tears that will be shed will be remembered for millennia.

    Donohue is a bit more of a harda** than I am - as befits the head of the Catholic League; I had forgiven Hagee when he made those kind remarks about Benedict XVI.

    It is good that Hagee has the wisdom - and it must be from the Holy Spirit, whom I’m sure guides all those who show willingness to make amends - to understand that in a world where religion, itself, is under attack, all believers must stand together. God will, in the end, sort us all out and we’ll all have a good laugh in the life of the world to come over the things which divided us here on earth - meanwhile, those who follow Christ must stand united against those who wish to eradicate the Christian religion.

    If your talking about in yourself? You’re a lost cause! Have Faith in the One true God, The God of Creation, and you have more than you could ever hope for.

    And what compassion? True compassion flows from where they nailed a Man to a rugged ol’ Cross to die for your sins.

    We must all be thankful for such a Self-Sacrifice!!!

    Calling it “xenophobia” won’t make the Muslims who are trying to overthrow Europe go away, Cavalor.

    Spain: The largest Islamic organization in the country, the Islamic Committee of Spain, has welcomed this initiative, taking into account that 70 percent of those in Spanish jails are Muslims, who number around 54,000. Spain with its 40-million population, which is 94 percent Catholic, has a Muslim community of around 600,000.
