Senator Kennedy Hospitalized
May 17th, 2008 at 01:00pm Mark Noonan
The news story:
Sen. Ted Kennedy was taken to a Boston hospital after spending an hour Saturday morning in a Cape Cod emergency room, FOX News confirms.
The Massachusetts senator’s medical condition is unknown, but he was experiencing stroke-like symptoms, according to published reports.
Kennedy was first taken to the Cape Cod Hospital emergency room at about 9 a.m., hospital spokesman David Reilly told FOXNews.com. He was airlifted out after an hour, reportedly to Massachusetts General Hospital.
Our prayer here at Blogs for Victory is that Senator Kennedy is back soon causing us as much trouble as he can.
UPDATE: They sure are talking in the MSM as if they expect Senator Kennedy’s death.
UPDATE: It now appears that, while serious, it isn’t immediately life threatening.

Mark, very classy sentiments. Kennedy obviously is the antithesis of what you hold near and dear, for you to wish him well speaks volumes about your own character. Kudos………

Marty,
God help both of us, but Ted is my brother in Christ…

I agree with Marty, you have class Mark. I also wish him well. Disagreeing with some one on matters of politics (and even ethics) does not mean you want them to be hurt or ill. I can still remember my mother’s reaction to Bobby Kennedy’s assisasination. She did not agree with his politics, but said no family should suffer such pain.

In October he underwent surgery to correct a complete blockage of his left carotid artery—a main supplier of blood to the face and brain at Massachusetts General.
Particulates from the procedure could be responsible for the seizures he is now suffering.
Lack of blood to the brain could account for some of his recent slurred speech and decisionmaking on the floor of the Senate.

phnx,
What is the long term prognosis on things like that in a 76 year old man?

One of the things that I have found interesting watching the news coverage, and some of the commenters at some left wing sites, is that they care more about him getting back on the job and his policies then Ted as a person.
Personally, I hope he gets better. He is still and American and human being.

I hope it wasn’t a stroke. Those are quite serious! Though from what I’ve read there are any number of things that could have caused his current hospitalization. Here’s hoping he gets well soon!

Gozer,
I’m actually wondering if it is akin to what happened to my father a few weeks ago - just the oddest sort of siezure which we all thought was a stroke, but might not have been…have an appointment with the cardiologist on Monday and we hope to sort it out.

I wish the Senator a speedy recovery, and my prayers are with him.

Any badly overweight people out there should take heed. Another ‘Poof of the pudding’, or is it ‘the proof is in the pudding’. Whatever, it sounds apt.

Mark,
First the caveat…I am not a physician, nor do I play one on TV. That said, there are many reasons for seizures. The cause of about 1/3 of non-epileptic seizures is never determined.
Some of the the reasons can be related to strokes that result in lack of blood flow to the brain or with those that involve bleeding into or around the brain.
Metabolic disturbances: This group of disorders changes levels of various metabolic substances in the body. These disease states sometimes result in seizures.
Electrolyte disturbances (altered levels of sodium, calcium, or magnesium)
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar)
Renal failure (kidney disease) with uremia (increased urea in the blood) or changes that occur around the time of kidney dialysis
Hepatic failure (severe liver disease) and elevation of associated toxins
Hypoxia (lowered oxygen delivery to the brain)
Toxic causes: The presence of certain drugs can cause seizure activity. In addition, abrupt withdrawal of some substances can lead to seizure activity. These substances that may induce seizures include the tricyclic antidepressants, lithium, antipsychotic medications, aminophylline, and high doses of penicillin.
In the case of Senator Kennedy, alcohol withdrawal can be associated with seizure activity. These seizures usually occur 12-24 hours after the last drink but can occur up until 48 hours or more after binge drinking.
Withdrawal from prescription drugs and agents such as barbiturates and narcotics can result in seizure activity.
Seizures that are a result of identifiable cause, like a tumor, an AVM (arterio-venous malformation) or lack of blood supply due to carotid artery disease can be treated with catheterization, surgery and or medication.
First thing is to make sure the blood supply to the brain is good. This can be determined non-invasively with an ultrasound (color) of the carotids. To determine if it was due to an AVM, he may need catheterization. Be sure the Interventional Radiologist has lots of experienced.
Prognosis can’t be made without much more information.
Our prayers are with you and your dad.

I hope he’s OK also. Though his family could survive financially, his loss would be a real blow to them.
A stroke that didn’t kill my father in his early forties nonetheless destroyed my family. As the oldest, I was least affected and escaped into the Marine Corps two weeks after turning 18.
I don’t wish that on anyone - and I hope he recovers.

I hope Senator Ted Kennedy makes a full and speedy recovery.

Completely off topic (sorry Mark), but I just found the following:
>>>Is the U.N. powerless? Only if it wants to be. The democracies on the Security Council won’t introduce a resolution calling on the junta to accept aid because they expect China and possibly Russia to veto it. Why should they let themselves be bullied by the autocracies? Let the Security Council vote on such a resolution. Let China or Russia veto it. Let the world see who is willing to assist the afflicted Burmese and who is willing to stand in the way<<<<

I am interested in hearing the liberals defend their beloved UN on this one.
