Obama: “The buck never got here.” Sorry, But Democrats are Really Getting to be a Bunch of …. Well, You Know

Democratic Talking Points, Part 1

May 20th, 2008 at 12:17am Mark Noonan

I’m going to start listing what are clearly DNC/Obama Campaign talking points, just to see them develope. This is what I’ve gathered so far in the cycle since Obama emerged as the de-facto nominee:

1. Republicans better not take issue with Obama’s past or associations.

2. The Republicans will run a nasty campaign via their 527s, infamous for the way they made politics nasty.

For number 1, its a matter of Democrats trying to declare Obama, as a person, off limits to attack…we’re supposed to only talk about his hope for change and what a wonderful guy he is. No fair bringing up his missed votes, his thin record of achievement, his connections to terrorists and anti-American kooks…

For number 2, this is just bizarre - it is liberals who used 527s in 2004, hardly any such expenditures were on the right. The fact that Democrats are willing to go out and repeat this talking point just shows how far disconnected the run of the mill liberal is from any sense of truth.

I’m sure this is our fault. I just haven’t figured out why yet? Liberals a little help here?

“Just shows how far disconnected the run of the mill liberal is from any sense of truth.”

What the heck is a “run of the mill liberal”? Is that supposed to be what’s in opposition to a doctrinaire conservative? Are such monolithic blocs really out there?

I’m a liberal who’s a biblical Christian, and I catch flack from certain other liberals for being so but don’t mind much because it gives me a chance to explain how authentic Christianity actually supports core liberal principles. This often ends up bringing respect to the actual teachings of Christ and bridging what might otherwise be a hopeless gap, if defining Christianity were by default left up to today’s evangelical movement.

Most people have certain principles. Unfortunately far too many political opinions on either end of the spectrum are based on prejudice or socially dictated, rather than driven by principle. But people can learn to discern critical values that transcend traditional political divides; moreover they can learn to act on principle.

I would observe that most “run of the mill liberals” I know are well connected with objective reality and historical facts, and most have robust principles based on traditional Christian values such as altruism, compassion, justice and honesty. If there are certain characteristics that define doctrinaire conservatives today they might include arrogance (particularly moral self-aggrandizement), insensitivity and aversion to spiritual introspection of any kind.

But the truth is, we all are mixed bags of various and sometimes conflicting attributes. The strength of liberalism is its admission and celebration of that diversity, whereas the weakness of conservatism is denial of its own fallibility. You, Mr. Noonan, are Exhibit A of this particular trait.

As for liberals being “disconnecected from any sense of truth,” that is simply an absurd statement illustrating your own disconnect from objective reality.

And as for Khan’s post, he’s in the twilight zone. I’ve been all over east Africa including Zimbabwe, and what’s happening there has zip to do with American politics. The largest lesson I can read into the linked story is that xenophobia (another typical characteristic of doctrinaire conservatism) leads to ugliness writ large.

    1. I think someone feels a little sting from Barack Hussein Obama surviving the Reverend Wright-gate. Having gotten the early raw feeds about two hours ago I see nothing of the sort and besides Noonan there’s nothing that can stop the GOP from doing literally whatever it wants in regard to talking about Rezko, Wright or anyone else in the past of Barack Hussein Obama.

    2. Have you forgotten about these guys? I sure hope John McCain has not forgotten them to quote the Republican presidential candidate form August 6 2004 regarding the first Swift Vets and POWs for Truth ad [at the time SwiftBoat Veterans for Truth], “I condemn the ad, it is dishonest and dishonorable, I think it is very, very wrong.”

While certainly the Democrats raised more money via 527s in the 2004 elecrtion it is a miscarriage of facts to say that there were “hardly any such expenditures on the right.” If USD 86,4 MM is an irrelevant sum of money I would be delighted to have you wire an equal sum to my accounts in the Bankasi Hellacu!

Well done mate! Bloody well done! You need your own liberal Christian blog. It is high time Christianity=Caring Compassion rather that Christianity=CROWD CONTROL.

Unless there is a dramatic change in their MO, Mark, you are correct.

Absolutely. I’ve never bought the neocon perception of Christ’s teachings and no doubt He would be appalled at what they do in His name.

They try to dress Him in army fatigues and combat boots and put a rifle in His hand. He may have been a soldier, but it was a soldier of peace and good will.

Some more likely DNC talking points

    1. By November, The neocons will have Bin Laden peeking out of every sewer grate in Des Moines Iowa.

    2. Republicans will paint Obama so liberal that he will make Karl Marx look like capitalist.

    3. The Republicans will have you believe, regardless of income Democrats will take your entire paycheck for taxes.

    4. Obama will be held accountable for every word uttered by every person he has met.

    5. Republicans will distinguish those that are patriotic by the fact they have a lapel pin.

    6. Republicans will make every effort not to place their 14 years of congressional rule and Bush Presidency on the ballot. Housing crisis, failed energy policy, failed management of Iraq civil war, rising number of abortions, no action on healthcare, waste of surplus were simply hangovers from the Clinton Administration.

    7. Republican will have you believe all the problems needing solutions in number 6 will have to go on the back burner. The number one issue facing America today is whether or not two ladies should be allowed to live together.

I love the Rolling Stones theology lesson.

“He can’t be a man cuz he doen’t smoke the same cigarettes as me!”

For the millionth time can someone here name anyone they have heard in public service that supports NAMBLA? If you Google liberal support for NAMBLA all you get are a bunch of loonie right wing links to screed fests by people just like you Fmr Marine.

Millions of Christians support everyone of those thing save for Number 5. Because you want something to be so in the absence of fact, does not make it so FM no matter how much you incite hatred, skew facts or choose to be blind to the very obvious.

I think the Democratic Party talking points will be the same issues that are being discussed around water coolers at offices, in car pools and at dinner tables. How will we keep our house? How will we afford health care? How will we have to change our quotidian habits as we face a radical rise in energy/food/shelter costs? How will America repair its reputation among the community of nations? How do we make right what has gone so wrong in Iraq? There will be those who say America cannot answer these question, but to the doubters Barack Obama has a message, “Yes we can!”

These questions make way too much sense. The lunatic fringe’s interest is confined to nonsensical garbage. There is zero interest in repairing what needs to be fixed; and trying to get a reasonable response from FmMarine is nearly impossible.

“Are you better off now than you were 8 years ago?”

  • 11. Dennis  |  May 20th, 2008 at 3:47 pm

FmrMarine, you make a textbook straw argument in post 7. Apparently you have the same fundamental problem with definitions Noonan has. Have you ever owned or used a dictionary?

“Principles” are also expressed as essential qualities, standards of behavior or character attributes such as altruism, compassion, honesty, etc. Your checklist of personal horrors are not principles at all, but just a random collection of opinions you regard as bad, and which you associate (incorrectly, for the most part) with liberals.

You worldview does not explain why gay children are as likely to be born into conservative families as liberal ones, or why gay people are as likely to be politically conservative as liberal (witness Mary Cheney, Congressman Mark Foley, evangelical preacher Ted Haggard, Senator Larry Craig, former White House reporter/male prostitute Jeff Gannon, etc). Nor does it reckon with the fact that most people who are addicted to porn are highly repressed individuals, and far more conservatives fit that description than liberals.

As for NAMBLA, does such an organization really exist? If so, you seem to know more about it than anyone I’ve ever met. And is there even a Communist party in the United States any more?

To sum up - like Mark Noonan’s, your presumptions and prejudices have little to no connection with reality.
