Yes, sir, Mr. Noonan, and while you’re thanking the troops, let’s thank the dem leadership
who put together the Juggernaut that decided Hitlers fate, ended Japanese imperial aggression, put together the plan to check Stalinist expansionism without another ruinous world war, rebuild Europe and Japan, while beginning the greatest susutained run of prosperity this country had seen.
I think we all agree we could sure use that kind of leadership today.
2. Danish Artist | June 6th, 2008 at 6:28 am
JAT,
The Dem leadership did not conceive the plan. It was a General, who later became the REPUBLICAN President. Like today’s surge in Iraq, according to liberals, the Bush administration had nothing to do with its success, only the military is responsible for that.
The Dem leadership also did not create the ” greatest susutained run of prosperity this country had seen”. That was due to the destruction all over the world of the manufacturing industry. The only country with substantial manufacturing was the U.S. Sort of like the dot com bubble, the Democrat leadership was there just by chance and hardly had anything to do with its success.
The only Presidents that fought communist expansion were Republicans. Well, with the exception of Kennedy in Vietnam and a pitiful attempt at Cuba. Democrats both prolonged the Korean and Vietnam war. And today’s Democrats, have not seen a Stalinist/Marxist dictator they did not like. Obama is like all the rest. That is “leadership” we cannot afford.
You can’t have it both ways.
3. neocon | June 6th, 2008 at 8:10 am
JAT,
You do realize the US lost over 6600 men on D-Day, right? That’s a one day loss, and since you’re so eager to claim the credit for the success’s of WWII, then you’ll have to accept this as the Dems fault too.
So, is that what they call supporting the troops? Sending them to their deaths at Normandy?
Sounds to me like the planning wasn’t done very well at all. Did they rush to war?
4. Kahn | June 6th, 2008 at 8:44 am
FDR also ignored the death camps and imprisoned Japanese Americans.
5. Casper | June 6th, 2008 at 9:38 am
WWII wasn’t a democract war or a republican war. It was an American war. The soldiers that landed were led by a great general and a great president.

Can’t you guys put aside your petty Dem/Repub accusations and honor the brave men who fought and died on June 6th, 1944.
My grandfather was at Gold beach. He passed on when I was quite young.
7. Bigfoot | June 6th, 2008 at 9:55 am
let’s thank the dem leadership….while beginning the greatest susutained run of prosperity this country had seen.
That same Dem leadership was in place from the start of 1933 to Pearl Harbor in 1941, the entire period being within the Great Depression.
Operation Overlord, the Allied codename for the invasion of Normandy, involved more than 150,000 men and 5,000 ships. It consisted of American, British, Canadian, Polish, and Free French Armies under command of General Eisenhower, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force (the choice of Eisenhower was officially made by President Roosevelt in December 1943, and agreed upon by the British). (from the linked article)
As an American of Polish descent, I’m happy to see the Polish forces being mentioned. A few years ago, I got to visit the Belgian town of Ypres, which had sufferred greatly in WW1, but had largely been spared during WW2, before being liberated by Polish troops. They are memorialized by a plaque on outer wall of the Cloth Hall in the center of town.

Robin,
I don’t much agree with you on anything, but I can set aside our differences for one day and honor your grandfather and all the others who achieved something so much bigger than themselves on that day, many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice. The entire D-Day operation was an amazing achievement, but, for anyone who has ever climbed a rope in gym class, this aspect of the invasion has always stood out in my mind.
22. Danish Artist | June 6th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
The false “professional journalist” and city desk editor of some fictional island - Robin Green says:
“I thought this was going to be a place where we could honor men like my grandfather who landed on the beacjes of Normandy on that horrible day not a place where people who enjoy their total sacrifce come to bicker.”
Why didn’t your site give even scant mention of D-Day???
But you bitch here?????
Back on topic after dealing with false outrage and complete ignorance….
My grandfather did not land on D-Day but was with the follow up armies that marched across Europe from the landing. He did serve in the 4th Army 9th Armored Division at the Bulge!!!!
He hardly talked about it and when asked was reluctant to do so. One detail - he was awarded the Purple Heart, which he and others refused, because he and the others disagreed on the fact that they also awarded Purple Hearts to GERMAN Shepherds!!!
Every D-Day, Veterans Day and Memorial Day I thanked him for his service. And, as I said, he would accept it with reluctance. He said that his service was a job that “he had to do” because evil needed to be stopped plus (with humor) “I was drafted!”
He was more admirable of today’s soldiers WHO VOLUNTEERED to do the same job.
23. Rich | June 6th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
My girlfriend’s grandfather did not fight at D-day but did fight during the invasion of Italy. He was captured by the Germans and forced to work in a power plant for several years. When he returned home after the war, he got a job in, you guessed it, a power plant, and worked there the rest of his life. I never got to meet him but I wish i had.

Danish Artist, et al
Eisenhower was an American first and a republican second. Bush is the opposite. Except for ‘52 to ‘54, Eisenhower worked with a democratic congress, and never with any of the meaningless rancor and antipithy we’ve seen for the last 8 years. In addition, Eisnhower gained the fame he did by being appointed over hundreds of other more senior officers by George Catlett Marshall, Roosevelts army chief of staff, a dem later to serve as Trumans secretary of state, and secretary of defense. When Eisenhower finally went after McCarthy, part of the reason was getting some payback for what McCarthys attacking Marshall, and perhaps for Eisenhowers part, not speaking more forcefully in his mentors defense when he was running for president.
Eisenhower, the American, never regretted going after McCarthys, the partisans commenting “I despise people who go to the gutter on either the left or the right and hurl rocks at those in the center.”
Bush is a McCarthiast partisan, and his henchman, Rove, learned well from one of the best. Eisenhower is a republican no Bush supporter would recognize as one of his lesser known quotes demonstrates.
“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who cold and not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of Iron.”
Another:”Don’t join the book burners. Do not think you are going to conceal thoughts by concealing evidence that they ever existed. ”
Bush isn’t worth quoting unless one enjoys a warmongering malaprop who thinks he’s built a “guy you want to have beer with” rep by never reading papers. Bush would’ve been a great bartender.
I am pleased to have had Eisenhower brought to my attention because I found a collection of his speeches, and quotes. He is quoted far too little, and the likes of Kennedy far too much. While he may not have been a great orator, his speeches make excellent reading. They are wonderful examples of the thinking of an accomplished man of faith: The best America has to offer.
Someone who could admire, while respecting the frightening power science was unleashing in his age. Understand that the nations military might, lay in its economic might, and it’s economic might lay in its inductrial might observing”The purpose is clear:It is safety with solvency. The country is entitled to both.”
Not that his schooling at West Point revealed the powerful intellect he would later domonstrate as supreme commander of the allied forces, and later as President.
While no slouch as a thinker, Eisenhower understood that people are turned off by someone who thinks too much of their ideas
“I can think of nothing more boring for the American people than to have to sit in their living rooms for a whole half hour looking at my face on their television screens”
Bush appeared on American Idol, noting that he’d wanted to be somewhere where there were good ratings.
As a leader in the midst of some of the cold wars hottest days, Eisenhower demonstrated an understanding of his nations history, and the character of its political life before Rove when he observed “In America, we are decended in blood and spirit from revolutionists and rebels-men and womenwho dare to dissent from accepted doctrine. As their heirs, may we never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion.”
Finally, Eisenhower offers an example of a genuinely humble man concerned about the subordinates under his command. “Humility must always be the portion of any man who recieves acclaim earned in the blood of his followers” Bush demonstrated his opinion of himself when he repeatedly claimed he had made no mistakes as President in the 2004 campaign. Just like he made no mistake when he hid out with dem Lloyd Bensons son in a hard to get into national guard unit during the Vietnam war.
We are definitely in need these days of more Americans, and fewer partisans. None of the current presidential candidate crop is willing to speak clearly, honestly, and intelligently to our problems. Nor do any of them seem to be bothered by the abysmal state of our uncivil discourse, content to lead a nation tetering on the brink of financial ruin with an advertising campaign.
As Edward R Murrow used to say”Good night and good luck.”
After Bush we’re going to need all we can get.

Eisenhower did not have to deal with today’s disgusting crop of liberals. ALL who are liberals first and Americans second. From day one, these libs vowed not to work with an “appointed president”. I see you fell for that BS as well.
Eisenhower was a great President. He still was a Republican and he still was the planner of D-Day and the Democrats had nothing to do with the planning.
Sorry, for getting of topic guys, but I just can’t stand liberal partisan stupidity.

From my post, Danish Artist, an Eisenhower quote you might have missed.
“I despise people who go to the gutter on either the left or the right and throw rocks at those in the center.”
A real american. Like I wrote in my post #24, Eisenhower is a republican no Bush supporter would recognize.

They are still the same party neocon and that you cannot recognize that is why the GOP is declining. The Right became the party of hindering liberty and the Liberals kept on being American Social Democrats. Barack Obama could deliver that same speech and mean it; John McCain would have to lie and would offend the base who are still thirsty for Persian blood, flesh and bone. The Rights of Mankind and all other sentient life in the Known Universe do descend from the Creator of the Stars. What has been lost in the minds of some who creep on the face of Terra and call themselves human is that being a member of a certain religion does not give you ownership of morality, or tradition or make your religious beliefs the law.
29. Danish Artist | June 7th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
Thanks JAT,
“I despise people who go to the gutter on either the left or the right and throw rocks at those in the center.”
Your provided quote proves that today’s liberals will not work with Eisenhower. Eisenhower did not have to deal with liberals of today, who do indeed go to the gutter on the left and throw rocks at those in the center and to the right of center. Simply, anyone who does not agree with them. Look at how they have trashed anyone who does not toe the party line.
Your quote does nothing to change the fact that Eisenhower was a Republican and planned the D-Day invasion and the liberal administration could not possibly pull anything like that off.
Obama does not believe the “Ask not what your country can do for your. Ask what you can do for your country.” Obama has done nothing but propose government program after government program - a nanny state.
Cav, a party that is trying to create the nanny state can in no way progress liberty. That might work in your fictional hell but not here.
30. JustAnotherTaxpayer | June 7th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
Your forgetting another personage who figures prominently in my essay, as he figures large in Eisenhowers biography, as he does in world history in those crucial years between the beginning of WW2, and the cold war.
George Catlett Marshall. Churchill called him “The organizer of victory” for the allies in WW2. In addition to putting in place the military leadership that won WW2, he redirected the rebuilding of western Europe, establishing it as the buklwark between the west, and Stalinism as Trumans Secretary of State.
Together with Dean Acheson who was Marshalls succesor at the State Dept, and James Forestall organizing the newly formed Dept of Defense, these three dems laid the theoretical and practical groundwork for the policy of containment followed for the next 40 years by all US administrations, till the abeyance of the Soviet Union in 1991.
But lumping these people together with the likes of Lyndon Johnson because their party label is the same, is like lumping Bush with Lincoln because they have the same party label. Johnson was a secular liberal who epitomized the hijacking of the dems, as Bush is a religious liberal epitomizes the hijacking of the republicans.
Todays republican party would have no more use for an Eisenhower, than todays dems would have for a Truman. Party labels do not make achievements in the eyes of anyone except the creators of the ad campaigns that serve as a substitute for useful discourse about the challenges our nation faces.
