Where, Oh Where Have Obama’s Catholics Gone…
June 12th, 2008 at 12:47am Mark Noonan
…Oh Where, Oh Where Can They Be?
Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments today on Sen. Barack Obama’s Catholic National Advisory Council:
“On May 2, I issued a news release calling on Sen. Obama to dissolve his Catholic National Advisory Council. My principal reason for doing so was his selection of dissident Catholics to advise him: for example, most of the public officials are so pro-abortion that they had a 100 percent NARAL record. On May 8, most members of the Advisory Council faxed me a letter defending themselves; I answered the same day taking them to task for their lame defense. But it now appears that my initial recommendation—to dissolve the group—may have been accepted.
“There is no mention anywhere on the Obama website of the Catholic National Advisory Council. On Friday, we placed three phone calls to his campaign: two to media relations and one to Mark Linton, Obama’s National Catholic Outreach Coordinator. We were told each time that someone would get back to us, but no one did. I then personally e-mailed Linton informing him of the three phone calls, requesting that he respond to my question: ‘I would like to know whether the Catholic National Advisory Council for Sen. Obama is still operative.’ He has not replied.
“It would appear, then, that the group no longer exists. It is not hard to understand why. After being criticized by the Catholic League, Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City rebuked one of Obama’s Catholic advisors, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius: she was instructed not to present herself for Holy Communion (she is a rabid defender of abortion). At about the same time, radical Chicago priest Rev. Michael Pfleger bailed on Obama by withdrawing his name from the Advisory Council. Now we find that there is no listing for the group on the Obama website.
“Looks like the Obama campaign’s decision to quietly drop its Advisory Council didn’t work. We found out, and we’ve never been accused of being quiet.”
Of all the varied frauds in political history, none was quite so absurd as Obama’s attempt to make it appear that he had some Catholic support for the fall campaign. Catholics are about 27% of the American electorate, and they went 52%/47% for Bush in 2004 - but that doesn’t tell the whole story, as practising Catholics (ie, those who attend Mass weekly or more often) went 56% for Bush, and gave him about 1.7 million more votes than Kerry just from this demographic: that is more than 50% of Bush’s winning margin, and in Ohio and Florida the surge of Catholic votes for Bush pretty much made the difference between victory and defeat, and thus was instrumental in giving President Bush a second term. Obama would very much like to get back to Gore’s 2000 performance amongst practising Catholics, when a majority of them went for him over Bush. And so - have a Catholic outreach group and make like you give a damn about the concerns of practising Catholics.
The trouble is that there is a dearth of Democratic Catholics who can in any way, shape or form appeal to a majority of practising Catholics. Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania might have a shot at it, but Ted Kennedy? Not a chance - and when the Democratic governor of Kansas was called to account, it just made the issue all the more stark; there are Catholics, and then there are Catholics…and if you want the vote of people who take the Catholic faith seriously, then you’re going to have to drop pro-abortion fanaticism as well as a host of other leftwing desires from your program. In the end, the circle couldn’t be squared and while I suspect there will be some minor and rather creaky attempt to have a “Catholics for Obama” officially in existence, we can really just write off this attempt on the part of Obama to expand beyond his extremist, leftwing political base.
Meanwhile, McCain enjoys the support of quite a number of solid Catholics. Wonder who will win the majority of Catholic votes in November?

To insinuate it is Catholics in Florida who are responsible for the 2400 additional troop deaths and a continuation of absentness only philosophy that has lead to an increase in the number of abortions since 2004 is irresponsible.

Wow that amount of blood on GOP presidential hands just keeps getting higher doesn’t it? Ffity million aborted now up from 45 million a few months ago. 6 of the 9 Supremes that voted for Roe were GOP appointees.
Six of nine . . .
So nice of you to take the time from being in permanent campaign mode to support the troops.

Hoops: FmrMarine not only presents us with a horrible Hobson’s Choice of should we be more sympathetic to the war machine or the theocratic machine., he’s also a phonus balonus.
I’ll tell you how I know. Nobody who has been in the corps is ever a FORMER Marine. That person is a MARINE for life.
Amazing. These folks are so obsessed with all things military and can’t get an obvious thing like that right.
But eough politics. I want to discuss my three favorite things in the world: drugs, sex and gambling.
I have discovered a cheaper, better, safer alternative to poppers, which give me a headache. Sex and ethyl chloride are like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups — two great tastes that taste great together. Just spray some of that in a concentrated blast on two washcloths and when you and your partner are about to climax grab those washcloths form a pipe with your hand and inhale for dear life. When you come together on that stuff, it’s a trip to the moon on butterfly wings!
But, Hoops, I played some gin last night with a friend of a girl I see here. He drives a cab and has a lot of free time at odd hours so he started playing gin on Yahoo like last week and was doing well and asked her if he could play against me cause I play to Schoenfeld Level B. So, he comes over and I say let’s just play for fun because I’d feel guilty taking your money and I’d feel sick getting scammed. That was fine with him he had been truthful. This guy had the single finest game of gin I’ve seen in 5 years at least. And he justed playing two weeks ago. He naturally developed these total Stu Ungar moves picking random open cards for deceptive purposes early hand and then there was this hand we were near the end and had 1 out to win and was looking like nothing, so I broke a lay to defend to a tie. He broke quads to defend to a tie in the same game. This kid’s a prodigy and serial I going to enter us both in the Mexico City Jewish tournament singles and partnership. That’s a sick event. The prize money’s good but the side action is on another planet. In the game with these old dudes they’re playing $25 a point and you need $50K minimum to sit in. It’s worth it just to hear Yiddish spoken with a Mexican accent!
I’m cooking up a spoonful of angelito right now. Smoke up some rock and listen to some tunes and try to guess by how many points Obama will win those 33 states. This McCain is so lame, Texas is in play for Obama. Obama could run with Angela Davis or Nicky Barnes and have a legit shot at Arizona.
Life is sweet, dahlink, when you got some rock to smoke and some ginger ale to drink and maybe I’ll get the crew together to play some Espanola21. That’s a great game. They’ve mis-priced it and you’re a 1 1-2cent winner of the top without counting. With regular count and side card count you can play to 4c. We killed this place for $24,000 two weeks ago.
What we were talking about on the blog again? Oh yeah, the troops or something. Like, whatever. I got to read some Sklansky On Blackjack a few chapters. Can’t be bothered about the troops and I’m pro-choice anyway so I can’t worry about the other stuff either.
Later, Hoops

Oh if wishes had wings to sit on the edge of your bed and enjoy a little “angelito” and sip cool ginger ale on a warm evening. These squares have no idea what wondrous beauty is in the Living World. They are saving themselves for the maggots and on dreams that they will fly up up up into the sky . . .
When I would visit Fred in the City he would drive around and park in front of some building and we’d sit and eat sandwiches or Chinese and he’d tell a story about it. One night we parked at a place and he only say one sentence and gave me that look. The sentence was “Yonky was never the same after that beating from The Kid.”
These people here who think 1950s values in middle America resonate somewhere deep in the Soul of every American never ate four hebrew nationals sitting in front of a “social club” at 2 in the morning with a man you were destined to be friends with forever.
To them it’s sort of like being in a fight is more important than the fight. When there’s no opponent it’s as if their lives have no meaning. No wonder they cling to so many dangerous things, religion, guns and bigotry.

Hoops: Stuey was 10 years older than me. I didn’t know Yonky. The guys Fred would know are Harry Mankoff and the guy who collected for him “Gay” Bobby. Gay Bobby’s a Marine. He fought in Vietnam but I don’t know what years. He was out then, so if Fred knew him, he’d know him as Gay Bobby who collected for Harry. Stuey played horses with Harry when he was a little kid.
He’d have to know Gay Bobby because Bobby’s a comic now and must have always been funny. I’m not going to write his last name because these folks are such prudes and homophobes, but serial check out his CD. He does this bit about cruising NYU dudes in the library bathroom. And a cop comes in and says “what’s going on here?” Bobby sez “I’m recruiting for NYU football.” And the cop sez “GO VIOLETS!”
There’s only one of those social clubs that let in Jews as well as Sicilians and Napolidon’ and you don’t have to do “family” stuff you just have to be recommended. THE GENOA on LAGUARDIA & W HOUSTON. They had two 1-2 games going always but they played sick. It was always at least 100 to see the flop. Great Sicilian chef. Made a soup and a main course every day and night. $5. ON the morning of 9/11 they kept playing NLHE. THAT’S THE SPIRIT BABY! That’s why NYC is all that.
Yeah, what’s the big deal with rock? You don’t turn into the Wolfman or something. Just mellow out a little. Safer than letting your kids play with guns. And WAY safer than bigotry. And WAY^3 safer than religion. We’re all going to the same place anyway.
But I hear you on those dogs. And I’m sure you and Fred got the late night Chinese from Wo Hop. My Wo Hop order was always the same: Hot & Sour soup and Roast Duck Lo Mein.
I missed 50s values, dahlink, I was born in 61.

Hello? You can’t die twice up there can you?
Oh, gasp, the “Islamists” are going to burn me up in their ovens. Okay I’m scared are you going to send a white Man down here to save me from something that is impossible? There’s no agenda there’s just what your brain can’t deal with and everything else. We’re not anti-Christian we’re anti-Christians acting like the mean people in Roots everytime something happens in their communities. How is it that in a antion of 200 million white people the leading story on practically every local news channel in the good ole USA is a story about a black man committing some crime? You know if I dedicated my Afterlife to reporting white on white crime I’d never get any sleep.
So dude I won’t long for any such day because as long as I can get a good steak, get laid and have a few hours of relaxing free throws after a good run being on the other side of the great Divide beats what you have got hands down.

Just be honest about your positions and everything will work out just fine.
Soooo, WHY are we still in Iraq with a Democrat Congress? Just what IS the social security plan? WHY is it OK for Teddy Kennedy to kill all the wind mill projects? With no new oil, just WHAT is the deal with approving new nuclear plants?
Just be honest, thats all.

How come NONE of the lefty posts on this thread address why no Catholic (27% of the electorate!) who honors his/her faith will vote for the infanticide-favoring Obama???
Could this POSSIBLY be a SENSITIVE point for Mr. Messiah and his supporters???
30. Casper | June 12th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
JPL ,
My parents and sister, who are very strong Catholics all plan on voting for Obama.
31. Mark Noonan | June 12th, 2008 at 11:27 pm
Casper,
If so, then they are in error - no Catholic who takes Catholic teaching serious can vote for a man who is clearly on the side of increasing the number of abortions, even if he, himself, doesn’t realise it (and my bet is that Obama doesn’t understand the abortion issue in the least - in the sense that he doesn’t understand just what sort of people are covered under the “pro-choice” banner). There are worse errors a Catholic can make, but it is still an error for any Catholic to vote for Obama (or, indeed, 90% of Democratic candidates).
32. Casper | June 12th, 2008 at 11:41 pm
Mark,
My parents are against abortion, just as they are against unnecessary wars. The pope has come out against the Iraq war several times. How can you as a Catholic support it? According to them it was an error to vote for Bush.
33. Mark Noonan | June 13th, 2008 at 1:29 am
Casper,
I direct you, first, to the USCCB statement:
Boiled down - everyone involved in law making has a moral obligation to work towards lessening, and eventually ending, the sinful scourge of abortion. Obama, as President, would work towards the opposite goal - he would, by appointment and action, make abortion more common and more easily obtainable. In good conscience, no Catholic can support his candidacy for the Presidency of the United States of America UNLESS Obama were to come out and clearly state that his policy will be to work against legal abortion.
Now, as for the Church position on the war - there isn’t one. JPII and Ratzinger/Benedict XVI have both made clear statements that they opposed our decision to liberate Iraq in 2003, and many other Catholic leaders and thinkers have done the same - but the war has not been declared unjust, and the official position of the Church in 2008 (if you want there to be one) is that the eventual outcome of the campaign must be a free and secure Iraq with especial attention paid to protection of the Christian minority.
Your family is free to say that Iraq is wrong and, indeed, to determine themselves into anti-McCain actions based on the view that the Iraq campaign is wrong - but far more important in this debate is the issue of life, and the protection of the unborn. To vote for Obama because of Iraq, while Obama seeks to extend and protect abortion, is akin to voting against boxing but wanting nothing to do with a rash of murders in the neighborhood.
