How Was Your Fourth?

Out here in Las Vegas we did the usual - a rather general popular defiance of the laws against rocket-type fireworks. That plus a few hundred thousand out of towners dropping by to pay a goodly portion of our State budget for next year.
What did you do?

I spent the day working on my back yard, working on school stuff, watching movies and relaxing with my wife on the deck. All in all a god day.

My wife and I mostly goofed off. I caught a mess of Bluegill from our pond in preparation for a big fish fry with friends tomorrow afternoon. Last night the family across the valley from us (only about a 1/4 mile away) put on a fireworks show to end all fireworks shows. Most commercial displays last around 20-30 minutes with a 5 minute finale. This one, using commercial grade fireworks, lasted over an hour with a 20 minute finale with at least a couple dozen of the giant star bursts that fill the entire sky and end with a resounding BOOM!!. The best part — we got to watch it from our driveway. What a great country!

We had a family barbecue (me and my honey’s family, that is). Her daughter’s new hubby is back from Iraq. We had an interesting talk. He got back a few days ago, but he and his bride spent most of that time at the Hotel del Coronado. He thought he was going to splurge (it’s very swanky), but it didn’t turn out that way. People all along the way took care of our Marine. The hotel provided them with a suite at the lowest room rate they had. Whenever he went to buy a drink it was covered (thank you people — and tourists — of San Diego). And an anonymous benefactor took care of all the other charges that showed up on the bill. When they went to check out it was like, “You’re all set, see ya later”, lol! Hearing them relate the story was very heart-warming.
After the barbecue we walked over to the lake to watch the fireworks. Objectively, I suppose it would be charitable to describe the quality of the display as middle-of-the-road. But given the circumstances it was hard to be objective. It was a wonderful day.

It was alright… Watched 1776 with friends, got food poisoning (which sucked), but got over that and went to a charity thing some of my friends were throwing, proceeds going to Iowa flood victims. Not that much in the way of fireworks (they’re illegal in Georgia and I didn’t have the time to go to South Carolina), and what we did do stopped when someone got shot with a Roman Candle–He was ok though… Overall, a pretty good day…

I ate at a cool Cuban restaurant down the street from my apartment in chicago. Walking back we noticed a small yorkie running in and out of traffic, almost getting hit by several cars as it was spooked by fireworks going off. My girlfriend’s dog is a yorkie and was in my apartment a block off.
I threw the to go box in the air and ran down the middle of the street dodging traffic and going after the quick puppy. As i got nearer I realized it wasn’t even my dog, still I wasn’t about to let it get smushed. I scooped it up and waited around at the intersection for a few minutes and no one came to claim it, and it didn’t have a collar on. I printed up fliers and then before i could put them up I saw someone running down the street. He was so happy to get his dog back he was crying. It was awesome to make a difference. Today I’m having a huge cookout at my apartment and the dog’s owner is coming to hang out with his wife and dog. A good ending to a scary situaton. Hope eveeryone else is having a good weekend.

Bought a new SUV. That took most of the day. 2009 Pilot.
Then BBQ and watched the towns fireworks.
Did some of the legal fireworks with my eight year old after the big show.
