Michelle Obama’s Stimulus Check

July 16th, 2008 at 10:29pm Matt Margolis

Rob at Say Anything brought my attention to Michelle Obama’s criticism of the the recent economic stimulus checks that went out, since $600 apparently can only buy you a pair of earrings.

Amanda Carpenter adds to this

She made these remarks at a “working women’s roundtable discussion.”

Although Mrs. Obama has been praised by fashionable outlets like Vogue magazine for her sense of style, her comments about $600 earrings reinforces an unflattering image of the Ivy-league educated Obama lawyers. They’ve both been called “elitist” several times though the course of the presidential campaign season.

Mr. Obama’s former Democratic rival Hillary Clinton called him at “elitist” for telling donors at a private fundraiser in San Francisco that “bitter” Americans in places like Pennsylvania “cling to guns or religion.”

I recently got my stimulus check, and ended up using it very quickly to purchase a number of things. It certainly helped, but more tax cuts would help even more.

Michelle Obama: “we’re a divided country, we’re a country that is “just downright mean,” we are “guided by fear,” we’re a nation of cynics, sloths, and complacents. “We have become a nation of struggling folks who are barely making it every day, folks are just jammed up, and it’s gotten worse over my lifetime. And, doggone it, I’m young. Forty-four!”

“You’re looking at a young couple that’s just a few years out of debt, see, because, we went to those good schools, and we didn’t have trust funds. I’m still waiting for Barack’s trust fund. Especially after I heard that Dick Cheney was s’posed to be a relative or something. Give us something here!”

And then she ridicules a $600 check sent to people far worse off than her. Tell me again how Democrats are perceived as the party for those less fortunate.

Tell me again how Democrats are perceived as the party for those less fortunate.

Shhhhh, neocon — pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Seriously, the answer to your question is quite simple: the 90% or so of the MSM that is decidedly left-leaning perpetuates the perception.

The more attacks on Obama that I read from the right, continues to confirm my opinion that you don’t think much of McCain. Unable to tout his virtues, you instead direct your venom towards Obama and his wife. Too bad. Now we will have to hear from the left about all of Cindy McCain’s statements of the last six months. Sad, since neither Cindy or Michelle are running for office.

Unable to tout his virtues, you instead direct your venom towards Obama and his wife.–Casper.

Well, Casper, I don’t know … I think you see through a glass dimly, but perhaps you might see more clearly if you do get your wish and Obama in elected.

What you don’t understand, is that people are supposed to always select the lesser of two evils, and to help others who have been misguided to see who the lesser of two evils is, by exposing the nature and ways of the greater evil which is Barack Obama.

  • 7. Casper  |  July 17th, 2008 at 12:53 am

    Jeremiah,
I prefer to pick the greater of two goods. I don’t see either Obama or McCain as evil.

I prefer to pick the greater of two goods. I don’t see either Obama or McCain as evil.

    Casper,

You may see Barack Obama as good now, but I am certain that you will see differently if’n he is elected. Personally, I don’t think he will be, but you never know what people will do next until all is said and done. As the saying, ‘Until the fat lady sings!’

John McCain, although he has many ideas that I disagree with, he is far above and beyond Mr. Obama.

    Casper,

Oh, we tout McCain’s virtues frequently here - but given that both Obamas are prone to the most boneheaded statements possible, there’s just too much grist for the mill here…we should pass up on chances like this to expose the Obamas as the elitists they are?

I think this is horse crap. The full quote shows that she was talking about what you could do with wht’s left after paying a few bills.

Hey Noonan, two questions where’s the “why’d he” tape? And the second, how many shares of AB stock does Cindy McCain own?

  • 12. Jo  |  July 17th, 2008 at 6:41 am

Heck, Michelle got her check? Dang … we’re still waiting on ours! (grumble) And I really do need a new pair of earrings NOT! If I ever pay that for earrings, my husband is going to have my committed! It would cover the nice 36″ flat screen LCD TV I just got :D

I love this site! Noonan, Can’t you read????

Read the entire quote from the site that YOU linked to.

Michelle Obama was talking about how either people could spend their check paying bills, or they could just get disgusted since it isn’t even enough to catch up most people’s bills.

If they got disgusted, they might do something foolhardy like go out and buy useless crap like earrings.

Learn to read critically, instead of always putting your Liberal-hating spin on everything. We see right through your BS and your lies, Noonan.

I for one, spent my check in one fell swoop, paying off a credit card bill that existed from paying my rent with the card. I always try to pay rent ahead if I can, and this time I had to use the credit card. Then I paid it off with the stimulus check.

Those checks mainly helped poor, responsible people pay bills that they couldn’t pay otherwise.

Irresponsible people go out and blow those checks to buy useless crap and “stimulate the economy.”

THIS attitude was what Michelle Obama was speaking of.

    Mark, again, learn to read!!!!

Opening your mouth and spreading lies to spin your own political view only makes you look foolish to those who have a brain….

  • 16. neocon  |  July 17th, 2008 at 9:11 am

    Robert,

Thank you for interpreting Michelles words in liberalspeak. You will all have to teach us this new language someday.

Just one question, you asserted the following:

“Those checks mainly helped poor, responsible people pay bills that they couldn’t pay otherwise.”

And I was wondering if those peopel were the same people that Michelle described as:

“we’re a nation of cynics, sloths, and complacents.”

Could you put more of your liberalspeak to work for us here and tell us exactly how this was a positive statement towards her fellow citizens?

I just love this new language.
    peace, neocon

Well, yes. And any rational person can see that. Which is probably why the B4Vers are having such a difficult time with it. And again, Margolis simply doesn’t know any better.

Incidentally, Margolis, unless you’re making a lot of money–like, six figures–your beloved tax cuts aren’t going help you more. Not that I expect you to grasp this concept, I’m just saying.

Those people that paid their bills; were they the sloths, cynics or complacents?

    Neocon,

Please ask a coherent question. Re-read Michelle Obama’s quote (the meaning of which seems to be flying over your head). Consult a dictionary as needed. Recast your sentence. Try again.

Good luck! You apparently need it.

  • 20. neocon  |  July 17th, 2008 at 11:40 am

    Tractatus,

I wouldn’t want to be in your shoes either in trying to explain the following sentence:

“we’re a divided country, we’re a country that is “just downright mean,” we are “guided by fear,” we’re a nation of cynics, sloths, and complacents. - Michelle Obama

So attacking the messenger is your only option.

    Makes sense

Do We feel superior to white American Christians?
Sure considering that We are smarter, wealthier, and can multilocate We, Ourselves of the Collective feel that means We are in many ways “superior.”
However, We do not feel We have the right to block their pursuit of happiness, their right to free speech or their right to life and liberty because of Our special nature! One can be “superior” and still not be oppressive or arrogant.

So let me get this straight…

Cindy McCain, who was born super wealthy as a beer heiress, and who recently said in a CNN interview “the only way to get around the state is by private plane”, is some regular, down to earth, woman of the people?
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/14/cindy-mccain-in-arizona-t_n_112695.html

But Michelle Obama, who grew up in a working-class household, who’s family scrapped by on the very modest salary her handicapped father worked his butt off for as an employee at the city water plant…is the elitist?

  • 25. gotbrains?  |  July 17th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

btw, I used to live in Arizona. I got around the state in this thing called a “C A R” - a volkswagen in fact.

There are also these things called “trains” and “buses”. Cindy may have seen them in the movies.

Where has Cindy McCain ever billed herself as a “woman of the people?”

“Woman of the people” Never heard her use these words. What little warped Limbaugh/Hannity style definition do you have for this little phrase? Is this her attempt at identifying herself as Obama’s typical white grandmother?

  • 29. gotbrains?  |  July 17th, 2008 at 5:36 pm

    Neocon:

Where has Cindy McCain ever billed herself as a “woman of the people?”

Yes, but you are decrying that Michelle Obama is an “elitist”. Considering you support John McCain, and you are extremely upset at what you see as Michelle Obama’s “elitism”, then it would stand to reason that you think Cindy McCain is not an elitist. Correct?

Or am I wrong? Do you think Cindy McCain is elitist?

My point is that it is rather absurd, given Michelle Obama’s modest, working-class upbringing, to imply that she is elitist. Especially when her counterpart on the Republican side was born a millionaire.

  • 30. neocon  |  July 17th, 2008 at 6:45 pm

    gotbrains?

Wrong, and first of all how would claiming that one person is an elitist, automatically mean that the opponent is not??? That makes ZERO sense.

Secondly, I am not claiming Michelle is an elitist, I am claiming that she’s an idiot. I would love to debate her.

And I don’t care what Cindy McCain is.

  • 31. neil  |  July 17th, 2008 at 6:47 pm

    gotbrains?
abundance of the heart comes from the mouth. Michelle sounds mean and has a foul mood.. do you here Cindy McCain griping about people or trying to elevate herself? You can have all the money but be completely humble and thats great. But if you are always bemoning others it comes from a sorry attitude in general.

  • 32. Gina  |  July 17th, 2008 at 7:17 pm

Hey Barack, let’s blame the media, instead of you and Michele taking some responsibility for Michele’s low popularity. Maybe the public doesn’t like it when a potential first lady makes statements about America being mean, or not being proud of America until her husband is elected. Or, maybe it’s because you joined Barack in subjecting your small children to the likes of Anti-American racist Jeremiah Wright throughout their entire childhood.

  • 33. Casper  |  July 17th, 2008 at 7:18 pm

    neocon,
“I would love to debate her.”

Now that would be an interesting debate.

    Casper,

I know, and I would relish the opportunity.

  • 35. gotbrains?  |  July 17th, 2008 at 9:19 pm

“I am claiming that she’s an idiot. I would love to debate her.”

LOL! Please, you’re cracking me up. Michelle would whip you like a rented mule.

But you’re not anywhere near her league intellectually, so luckily for you, no such debate would possibly be allowed to occur - which is exactly why you’re so cocky about it. Easy for you to taunt from the safety of B4V… where you regularly get pummeled by folks quite a bit less talented than Michelle Obama.

  • 36. neocon  |  July 17th, 2008 at 9:47 pm

Facts just don’t support many of her beliefs so I know I could hold my own with her, and I would enjoy it. But it is pointless to mention.

  • 37. Tractatus  |  July 17th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

They support even fewer of yours. Just sayin’.
