Least Surprising Poll of 2008

July 26th, 2008 at 02:15pm Mark Noonan

From Rasmussen:

Voters who have served in the U.S. military favor John McCain over Barack Obama by a 56% to 37% margin.

This data, from a Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey, is based upon interviews with 3,000 Likely Voters, including 588 voters who have served in the military. Voters with no military service favor Obama 50% to 43%.

Its simple, really - those of us who served are much better as spotting someone who is shining us on. A lot of illusions about human nature are stripped away when one is serving in close quarters with hundreds or thousands of other human beings for months on end without a break. I think it pretty fair to say that each of us veterans knew one or two people in service who were complete phonies who sounded like they knew what they were doing…

No surprise here. The millitary wants someone who will allow them to fight the enemy, not someone who will surrender to the enemy.

Actually, it sounds like good news for Obama based on recent history:

    Oct 2004 – Bush 73, Kerry 18 (Military Times)

2000 – Gore received 15% of the military vote

Further down in the article I was even more impressed with the fact: “Among those with close friends or relatives serving in Iraq, 44% favor McCain and 44% prefer Obama. Obama leads by seven among those who don’t have a close friend or relative in Iraq.”

Had McCain not also adopted Obama’s strategy for Iraq Obama’s lead would be greater.

A poll taken earlier this month on the on-line site for Military Industry Today (a news service for military industry professionals) had some startling results. Or maybe not.

    The question was this:

Regardless of your general preferences, which U.S. presidential candidate’s Iraq policy do you support?

    The results below the fold.

    John McCain: 38.72 percent
    Barack Obama: 54.32 percent
    Don’t know: 6.96 percent

    You are correct. A no-brainer.

Those who promote war will certainly support someone who promotes war.

major - the military wants someone who understands war. I am fairly certain that you do not. And I’m sick of educating idiot liberals.
