Did I forget to mention that I was going? Oh, sorry…but, hey, there was fishing to do, or at least some alleged fishing…one friend caught 2, another friend caught 5…but the fact that I came up with zero was only bad because the friend who caugh five? Well, his four year old caught three…

Shoulda just stuck with the beer drinking part of “fishing”….

    Hey, fishing alright!

Some of the best fishing I have ever done was in the Gulf of Mexico for Amberjack and Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi). We would venture out ride for two hours and reach the oil rigs in the deepest blue and clear water I have ever seen. Those rigs made for the best man-made reefs, which encouraged fantastic fish growth. But they do pollute the environment, right?!?

The strangest (and funniest) things I saw out their while anchored beneath one of those rigs was a workman fishing from the deck with a steel cable and hand-cranked winch!! While fishing for amberjack, we started to hear a repititious clanking sound. Now most of us have been on oil rigs and knew that was an usual sound. Then someone spotted a HUGE red snapper dangling on the end of a steel cable. That workman must have spent five minutes cranking that winch until he got the fish high above the water to lowest deck of that rig. It was amazing.

After a couple of hours we caught our limit, 2 each, and headed back for shore. I fed my whole family 16-20 people off of ONE side of one of those fish. I sure do miss fishing near those rigs. They were the best for good large breed fish.

    How can that be?

    Danish,

We were just up at Eagle Valley here in Nevada going for bass and trout - naturally you have all those fancy lures and bait, and they bite on worms and nothing else.

I lost three worms, so I guess I was feeding the fish and getting them in the habit of biting on them so that everyone else could actually catch them. Hungriest fish we ever saw - only able to recover the hooks out of two of the ten caught.

You didn’t catch any fish because God doesn’t like you. This is one of the first of many signs he will give you in trying to make you understand humility.

There will be more. I suggest you look up and contemplate “humility” in the dictionary.

When you find, understand, and practice humility, you will find peace.

    RolanMartin,

Are you related to Rowan & Martin?

Either RolandMartin is crazy or he’s a liberal, nevermind those are the same thing. Better luck next time Mark.

    Jeremiah,

It sure did - and I did remember to thank God for the mountains and the trees and the friends…

    That’s nice, Mark. :)

I drove up on Black Mountain a couple or three weeks ago…and it was just truly amazing, seeing the huge exposed rocks…and every now and then you would see a mommy doe deer with her baby frolicing all around in a field…been seein’ some big bucks too, their horns are just about finished growing…and then the velvet will peel. I’d say around the last of the month, first of September…somewhere along there. Frost won’t be too far off then.

Mark, fishing and beer? You gotta be kidding me. I love fishing and beer. And I love Caribbean in-shore fishing for mahi-mahi, wahoo, yellowtail, kingfish and barracuda.

Deep sea blue fin is great. Surf casting for stripers is frustrating but very satisfying if you get one. And I’m one of those old time NYers who LOVES going for blues.

I hate big tackle sportfishing like for blue marlin. You’re burning money. You can have a run of 50 fulldays and get blanked.

I’m going to take my son up to Arenosa for smallmouth bass this week.

Sorry about your getting blanked. I agree though with the old saw that a bad day fishing is better than a good day at a job.
I hope you remembered to bring your I-Pod and some speakers. It really does increase your enjoyment. If I’m going out for a half or full day on a boat, I’m always bringing lots of Italian deli fixings: prosciutto, sopressatta, provolone, marinated vegetables, salad dressing, mustard.

I can’t agree with your politics but I share your hobby.
