Beating Up Sarah Palin Are We a Nation of Wimps?

Rove: Palin May Add 2-3 Points to McCain’s Vote

September 2nd, 2008 at 07:05am Mark Noonan

Denigrated on the left, loved on the right, Karl Rove opines on the Palin effect:

Former White House deputy chief of staff Karl Rove predicted that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin “gives [John McCain] the ability to add two or three points nationally” to his vote total, a margin that could make a significant difference in what is expected to be a very close general election contest with Barack Obama.

Those points , according to Rove, who sat for an extended interview with The Fix and Newsweek executive editor Jon Meacham as part of the ongoing live web video coverage, will largely come from women but could also be the result of gains among blue collar, older men who “like the idea of a gun-toting woman.”

Rove also argued that Democrats have already “over played” their hand on Palin by putting out a statement — from the Obama campaign — that cast her as an inexperienced, small town mayor. (Obama distanced himself from that statement and has been entirely praiseworthy of the governor in his comments since then.)

“They run a real risk of looking condescending,” warned Rove. “The same crowd played these cards against Clinton and it was a mistake.”

As we’ve seen, the Democrats and their kook left base have really unloaded on not just Sarah Palin, but her entire family - ultimately, it will be up to Sarah Palin to put them in their place by remained in control and giving a good acceptance speech. Once past that, all the dirt the left has tried to throw at her will fade away as no one other than kook leftists will care. Follow up a good acceptance speech by clobbering Biden in debate (almost a foregone conclusion) and Governor Palin will not just do her part for John McCain, but open up her own Presidential prospects for 2012 or 2016.

Another day, another day of distractions, another day McCain does not have to speak to the issues; mortgage crisis, Iraq, education, high price for gasoline and the list goes on an on. But where are McCain’s solutions; it is September?

The Palin pick is consistent with “maverick” McCain’s recent cave in on his principles to the far right wing of the Party. The country is moving to the left of center and McCain is moving in the other direction. He is out of touch.

  • 2. Timestar  |  September 2nd, 2008 at 7:52 am

There are reports McCain wanted Lieberman. But in a secret meeting Lieberman was so vilified by the far right that McCain folded like a cheap tent and picked Palin; wow what a “maverick.”

Should we have to go to war with Iran will we first have to check the pulse of Limbaugh and Dobson?

Palin got more votes for Mayor of a small Alaska town than Biden received [4500] for President in the Dem primaries. And the Dems are condescending to the core in every matter, it is inevitable they will lose many more votes here. Just read this blog for their puported intellectual superiority and condescending attitudes.

    >>Palin got more votes for Mayor of a small Alaska town than Biden received [4500] for President in the Dem primaries.<<

Umm, in the 2002 Senatorial Election Biden received 135,253 votes (58% of the vote in DE).

Since Palin is SO QUALIFIED, are you suggesting that McCain is LUCKY that she wasn’t in the GOP Primaries? That she would have received FAR more votes in the primaries than Romney, Guilliani, and McCain himself?

Maybe with all her “Executive Experience” (something McCain doesn’t have), SHE would have ended up at the top of the ticket?

  • 6. coulterfan  |  September 2nd, 2008 at 9:30 am

Forgot to mention that Palin’s GENERAL ELECTION VOTE TOTAL for the Governor of AK was 114,697.

That’s CONSIDERABLY FEWER VOTES than Biden received in his last Senate campaign (135,253, as I mentioned)

Did I mention that Obama received nearly 19 MILLION VOTES during the Democratic primary?!?!?!?

Hey, can someone explain to me why Rush Limbaugh said this about Jamie Lynn Spears:

When you are a leader of a movement; conservatism where its very foundation is embedded with hypocrisy statements like this are easy to explain away. For example they are not real people they are celebrities.

Spear is in public life by choice. These continuous attacks on a teenager because you think her mother makes her fair game shows you to be the hate filled and viscous jerks we’ve always claimed you were.

This is OUR pick. You don’t like it? Don’t vote for them. Were you goin to anyways? Nope.

    Go pound sand.

Plain was the ‘Commander in Chief’ or the Alaskan National Guard. Where any decision or action she made proves shes more experienced than Obama. Didn’t you get that memo? Defining the specific decision or action is a little difficult, but we know she had to make them.

Who cares about Palin’s daughter? It is a private matter.

As for Rove, he did say that if Tim Kaine was picked he would be unqualified because he was the mayor of a city and a governor for under 3 years. And he said it would be only a political choice.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-jrk2e0MMs

Palin was picked for 2 reasons. She is a social conservative and a woman. McCain believes that Palin will steal Hillary supporters, and Palin said as much on Friday with her glass ceiling speech.

Will she increase his poll numbers. Probably, but by no means a mass wave of Hillary supporters will march over the line.

So, is the “liberal” “progressive” position that:
    1. Palin should have “aborted” (killed) her baby?
    2. That Palins daughter is a target, because her mom is Republican?
    3. That Palins daughter should abort HER baby?
    4. That DESPITE years of mouthing feminis ideals, you don’t think her husband should watch the kids while she campaigns and works? What about the Obamas? They work in different states and both have full time jobs?
    4. WHAT? Outside of trying to drive a teenager to suicide with your incessant viscous attacks - what is your point?

You attack family now. Great. What a bunch of dicks. But what do you even think should happen or should have happened?

Should employers start asking women if they’re pregnant? If their children are pregnant? You square this with liberalism how?

OR, are your “liberal” and “progressive” “ideals” just a sham? A sham that hides your true fascist ideals. The ideals that come to light with just the tiniest bit of scratching at the surface?

THIS is change we can believe in? Attacking Palins family is change and hope? So much for YOUR catch phrases!

coulter, we have not been attacking Obamas family and Al Gore III is very much an adult. Hypocrite.

    Coulterfan,

Yeah, but on a proportional basis, the population of Alaska is approximately 79% that of Alaska’s:

    2006: DE was 853,000 and AK was 670,000 (78.55%)
    2005: DE was 843,524 and AK was 663,661 (78.67%)
    2004: DE was 830,364 and AK was 655,435 (78.55%)
    2003: DE was 817,491 and AK was 648,818 (79.37%)

    source: http://www.factmonster.com/ipka/A0004986.html

I don’t think, under those circumstances, that Palin got “CONSIDERABLY FEWER VOTES” than Biden. Proportionately, fewer votes would have been less than 106,000 votes ~~ Biden’s count times 79%.

Also, Slow Joe picked up 51% of the vote versus a Republican opponent; Sarah Palin’s vote was against several opponents.

    Sarah Palin’s 2006 race:
Republican: Sarah Palin (114,697 for 48%)
Democratic: Tony Knowles (97,238 for 41%)
Independent: Andrew Halcro (22,443 for 9.5%)
    ..etc.

    source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Palin

    Slow Joe’s 2002 race:
    Joe Biden 135,253 58%
    Raymond Clatworthy 94,793 41%

    Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Biden

Anyway, you should be at least smart enough to know that these comparisons are specious.

..oh, and by the way, you did not mention that The Cypher picked up 19 million votes. Nor did you mention that he left 18 million HRC votes on the table.

Sure it might feel good but you’re going to be the one covered in your own waste. Obama has said drop the issue, and I agree with him. Losers like you are only going to build sympathy for Palin. The evangelicals see this as promoting life. This issue is going to GAIN votes for McCain. How is this going to hurt McCain? Pro-choicers are already not going to vote for him.

    coulter,

I’ve been on this blog and others off and on all weekend. And yes, Bristol is being attacked. I’ve also seen “liberals” angry that Palin did not abort her Downs Syndrome baby. Others claim the baby is really Bristol’s (5 months pregnant, 5 month old baby - this makes no difference to the criminally insane). YOU yourself posted this.

Yes - your attacks are vile. And they are being propagated to the media and we will not allow them to invisible. These attacks expose your true natures better than we ever could. You wear your hatred like a badge of honor. You last post actually seeks to justify your viciousness.

THIS is Change we can believe in? This is Hope?
Suggesting Palin should have killed her child? Suggesting Palins daughter should kill HER child? Attacking Republicans families? Trying to get a teenager to commit suicide?

There are no words to describe the supposed “liberal” actions without resorting to fascism as an example.

(Ed. Note: Off topic comment retained as its good instruction for all lefties out there)

  • 25. Mark Noonan  |  September 2nd, 2008 at 11:34 am

I think that Rove might be wrong - it might be more in the range of 3-5 percentage points gain for the McCain ticket.

You see, the left is gleefully hammering on the teen pregnancy aspect of this and essentially calling on evangelicals to condemn the Palins and insist she withdraw…they do this because their view of evangelicals - and Christians in general - is that we’re judgemental, hate-filled and unforgiving. Of course, it is lefties who are like that - we Christians are loving and forgiving…imperfectly, of course, but it is what we strive for. All the attacks on Palin’s family are doing is drawing us more tightly around her, and more firmly, by extension, to McCain. The left is shooting itself in the foot here…

This is a LIE! In fact, I said the opposite- a 17 year old should not be the subject of scurrilous rumors! Moreover, there is NO EVIDENCE for this stupid rumor- Down’s syndrome risks rise with age of the mother. I never would spread a vicious rumor like that.

But Sex Ed is a real issue though, like it or not.

I have to disagree with you on your advice to Coulterfan. The very essence of Swift-boating is to throw out lies that are difficult to fact check in hopes corporate media picks them up and spreads these lies as truth. Unchecked these lies become truths for the Fox news easily influenced crowd and very difficult to undo.

That sympathy cry we hear every election cycle from the Repugs doesn’t wash either. It is another well worn ruse to try and get the media to stop vetting their candidates. Typically Americans have no sympathy for politicians on the right or left.

  • 28. Danish Artist  |  September 2nd, 2008 at 12:15 pm

One very important aspect of Palin’s nomination has come to light.

I have noticed the shift over the past few days. Obama and his supporters are now essentially running against and responding to Palin!!! Obama and his supporters are claiming that he has more experience than Palin (why is this necessary when she is VP?) because he has run a national campaign for President and she has not.

Are you kidding? Being able to run a campaign makes someone qualified for President? For one thing Obama is not running the campaign his manager is. For another, WHY IS HE TRYING TO CONVINCE THE PUBLIC HE HAS MORE EXPERIENCE THAN SHE HAS, WHILE NOT CONVINCING THE PUBLIC HE HAS MORE EXPERIENCE THAN MCCAIN?

Whispering… “Don’t tell the Obama campaign that he is running against the wrong person!”

Amazing, they are coming unglued!!! Palin’s appointment is hindering Obama’s bounce even more than Obama could with his lack of experience and the public being able to see through the false image being portrayed by his campaign. If Obama was a true reform candidate like McCain/Palin then maybe he could run a reform campaign, but he has since strayed away from the “reform” tagline. It isn’t working and the American people have seen through the lie.

  • 29. Rich  |  September 2nd, 2008 at 12:24 pm

Look for Palin’s appearance to get a lot of viewers, probably close to Obama. And yes, it is very odd that Obama is choosing to run against Palin. He tried to run against Bush first. Maybe by the end he will get around to running against McCain.

Oh - but please keep trying to destroy the life of Palins daughter. How dare she have a Republican mother? Those Republicans should have to wear yellow elephants on their clothes or something so the fascist liberals can round them up and send them to the camps.

  • 33. gotbrains?  |  September 2nd, 2008 at 1:58 pm

    Khan -

“…but please keep trying to destroy the life of Palins daughter.”

Sorry pal, that bogus talking point doesn’t fly. It was McCain who threw Palin’s daughter under the bus in announcing her pregnancy, supposedly to rebutt rumors about Sarah. But those rumors were easily abutted without exposing the delicate and difficult situation of Palin’s daughter to the press.

This is not about Palin’s daughter. It’s about McCain’s impulsive, reckless decision making, and lack of vetting.

This is squarely about McCain. He should stop hiding behind Palin’s daughter.

  • 34. A-10  |  September 2nd, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Besides the fact that the Donks are comparing the experience of the GOP VP candidate to their Presidential candidate, lets look at the facts:

GOP Military Related experience: McCain - Retired from the USN as a Captain, Squadron Commander, received the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, & Bronze Star. Actually was a war hero. Pushed for the “Surge”, which has been a rousing success. Palin - 2 years as Commander-in-Chief, Alaska National Guard.

Dem Military Related experience: Obama - None. Biden - None. Received five student draft deferments. Called the “Surge” a “failure”, even after it was obvious it was a success.

GOP Executive Experience: McCain - Squadron Commander, US Navy. Palin - 6 years as Mayor, 2 years as Governor, ran small business.

Dem Executive Experience: Obama - None. Biden - None.

GOP Skeletons: McCain - extramarital affairs in the mid-70’s, divorced. Palin - Ticketed for Fishing violation in 1993, Fired Public Safety Commissioner.

Dem Skeletons: Obama - Smoked Crack Cocaine, buddies with unrepentant terrorist, attended anti-American church, financial dealings with felon, gave $1M earmark to wife’s employer after she was promoted. Biden - Factually challenged: Lied about plagiarism during law school, lied about law school ranking, lied about number of degees awarded in college.

Does running for President qualify as “executive experience?” NO. If you were the campaign manager, yes. Otherwise, your 2 years running for President only qualify you to be a candidate.

Does serving as Governor or Mayor qualify as “executive experience?” Most definately. The Governor is the Chief Executive of the State. The Mayor is the Chief Executive of the City.

Dems, keep trying to compare Gov Palin’s 8 years of executive experience to Sen Obama’s ZERO years of executive experience. Keep trying to compare Gov Palin’s 2 years as Commander-in-Chief of the Alaska National Guard to Sen Obama’s ZERO years as Commander-in-Chief of nothing.

Oh, and Sen Obama, keep trying to compare Gov Palin’s time as a Mayor of a small town to your extensive executive experience as a candidate. Sen Obama: “Well, you know, my understanding is that, uh, Governor Palin?s town of Wasilly [sic] has, uh, 50 employees, uh, uh, we?ve got 2500, uh, in this campaign. I think their budget is maybe $12 million a year. Uh, uh, we have a budget of about three times that just for the month. ”

Of course, Sen Obama deliberately left out the fact that as Governor, she has about 25,000 employees and a budget of $9B that she’s directly responsible for. So, do the math: She has ten times the number of employees (of which she actually is the Chief Executive) than the Obamba campaign, and has a budget that is 20 times greater. What a tool.

  • 40. searp  |  September 2nd, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Karl is wrong. If she was going to generate some positive impact it would show in the polling by now. It hasn’t. Some of those disaffected Hillary supporters that are supposed to vote Republican would have moved by now. They haven’t.

  • 41. yekepyt  |  September 2nd, 2008 at 5:27 pm

Oops, Obama is up in Mark and Matt’s favorite poll (the Gallup poll). Now his lead is expanded to eight points, from six yesterday.

McCain’s percentage is going down during the GOP convention, and Obama’s is going up — that is, the gap is widening so quickly because McCain is losing support at the same time that Obama is gaining it.

Things are looking dismal for Obama! Even amid Bush’s brilliantly engineered oil price crash!
