Senator Joe Biden (D-Hypocrisy)

September 3rd, 2008 at 02:49pm Kevin Patrick

Joe Biden is rightfully getting flak for claiming he was “shot at” in Iraq when it was actually a mortar fire a few hundred yards away where no one was in danger.

But that level of hypocrisy is nothing new to Biden.

Here is an interesting excerpt from John Kennedy’s closest aide Ted Sorenson discussing his withdrawl as nominee for Directory of the CIA for Jimmy Carter due to lack of Senate confirmation. Despite the ordeal, Sorenson never lost respect for Democrat Committee Chairman, Daniel Inouye.

On the other hand, the prize for political hypocrisy in a town noted for political hypocrisy went to Joe Biden. On my first courtesy call to his office, he could not have been more enthusiastic, supportive, and gracious, calling me “the best appointment Carter has made!”

At the opening of the hearing, he changed both his tune and his tone, stating: “Quite honestly, I’m not sure whether or not Mr Sorenson could be indicted or convicted under the espionage statutes…….whether Mr Sorenson intentionally took advantage of ambiguities in the law or carelessly ignored the law.”

After listening to my statement of defense and withdrawal, he said: “Ted, you are one of the classiest men I have ever run across in my whole life.”

This was an act Biden would repeat many times, famously against Clarence Thomas at his confirmation hearing:

Senator Biden was the first questioner. Instead of the softball questions he’d promised to ask, he threw a beanball straight at my head…

The senator, they found, had wrenched my words out of context. I looked at the text of my speech and saw that the passage he’d read out loud had been immediately followed by two other sentences … The point I’d been making was the opposite of the one that Senator Biden claimed I had made.

Senator Biden’s smooth, insincere promises that he would treat me fairly were nothing but talk.

The next day, Biden expressed a desire to speak with Thomas, so Thomas called the Senator:

The senator said that he was torn over his decision and had actually brought two statements with him to the committee meeting that day, one for me and the other against. He had decided to oppose me. He’d voted to confirm Justice Scalia, he explained, and now regretted it; he thought it was possible that I might turn out like Justice Scalia, so he couldn’t vote for me.

“That’s fine,” I said. “It doesn’t matter to me whether I’m confirmed or not. But I entered this process with a good name, and I want to have it at the end.”

“Judge, I know you don’t believe me,” he replied, “but if any of these last two matters come up, I will be your biggest defender.” (The other matter to which he was referring was the leak of my draft opinion.)

He was right about one thing: I didn’t believe him.

Nice try, but the attention is on Palin now. The expectations are very low for her tonight as a first timer on the national scene - and she’ll do VERY well in the room. She’ll establish the GOP as the non-denominational religious party and they’ll eat it up.

As long as she comes off as serious, not too heavy on the PTA/Xena the warrior goddess stuff, doesn’t make a bunch of claims about her mavericky reforms that are already fact-checked out of the water, and as long as there’s no whining about sexism or poking the media in the eye with a stick, she’ll make it through the week.

Beyond that, well, let’s just let this play out, shall we?

  • 2. jayhay  |  September 3rd, 2008 at 3:14 pm

Now McCain is on the freaking tarmac to welcome Bristol’s BFF, but God forbid anybody talk about the family. And the GOP is now starting public talk about DNA tests and such for Palin? Somebody stop these people…

  • 3. LiberalMind  |  September 3rd, 2008 at 3:15 pm

It’s up to the “liberal” media to point out the extremism of Palin’s positions and remind everybody that the Republican party is the party of hypocrites.

Had one of Obama’s daughters been pregnant the howls of “moral failure” and of “liberal culture” would never end.

    From wikipedia-

Chickenhawk (also chicken hawk and chicken-hawk; sometimes designated after a person’s name by [c.h.][citation needed]) is a political epithet used in the United States to criticize a politician, bureaucrat, or commentator who strongly supports a war or other military action, but has never personally been in a war, especially if that person actively avoided military service when of draft age.

The term is meant to indicate that the person in question is cowardly or hypocritical for personally avoiding combat in the past while advocating that others go to war in the present. Generally, the implication is that “chickenhawks” lack the experience, judgment, or moral standing to make decisions about going to war.

The term was first applied to vocal supporters of military action who were perceived to have used family connections or college deferments to avoid serving in previous wars, particularly the Vietnam War. In current usage, the label is used almost exclusively to describe ardent supporters of the Iraq War who have themselves never been in combat; it is seldom if ever used with respect to supporters of the (more broadly supported) war in Afghanistan as such. The label is not usually applied to women (who were historically, in most countries, barred by law from serving in combat). People who use the term have not necessarily been in the military themselves; people labeled “chickenhawks” have sometimes served in the military, but have not seen combat. Although it is possible to have a military career and never be at war, the term is often used in the context of someone who has been in the military in time of war but make efforts to steer clear of combat, such as George W. Bush’s military records showing he wrote “do not volunteer” on being requested if he would consider a tour of duty in Vietnam.”

This is the left’s term and they are responsible beholden to it. For some reason I have not heard any of you libs calling Biden (who voted for the Iraq war but dodged the Vietnam War) a chickenhawk over the past five years, but I have heard it tossed around at Bush, Cheney, and many members of the site. Hypocrisy comments have been leveled at Palin (for what her daughter did incidentaly). Any libs care to comment on this obvious double standard.

  • 5. Rich  |  September 3rd, 2008 at 3:30 pm

(CBS/AP) Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg on Wednesday called Vice President Dick Cheney the “lead chickenhawk” in an escalating war of words over the Vietnam-era military service of President Bush, Democratic rival John Kerry and the vice president.

“We know who the chickenhawks are,” the New Jersey senator said on the Senate floor. “They talk tough on national defense and military issues and cast aspersions on others, but when it was their turn to serve, they were AWOL from courage.”

I agree with you Liberal Minded, Obama would be called every name on the planet if same happened to his family.

Meanwhile, Investigations in Alaska are continually turning up new evidence against Palin. The Republican led legislature is not pleased with what it is finding out about Palin.

  • 7. Richard of Oregon  |  September 3rd, 2008 at 3:32 pm

The Biden stories have begun. This man will tell more self-serving fables and exagerations in the campaign than all the others put together. Music to my ears, hearing the man make a fool of himself.

  • 8. Some Assembly Required  |  September 3rd, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Richard, I agree. Whoever said shows like the daily show or Colbert report would go off the air if the democrats win the white house certainly never anticipated the ammo Biden gives them.

Speak of the devil! Here’s Colbert, a BIG Palin fan (wants her at the top of the ticket!) This is must see TV:

    MS,
“…Investigations in Alaska are continually turning up new evidence against Palin”

    ???

Does this meen by Monday the Democrats will be calling for her impeachment?

If I had the time–I could sit here and put together an extensive list of flat out lies told by both Sen. Obama and Sen. Biden; however, the MSM and liberals in general wouldn’t pay any attention and are spending a great deal of time protecting them.

Seems to me you are spending a great deal of time tearing down the not yet nominated Pres/VP of the Republican side but never have anything good to say on behalf of your selections (not nominations) because there is nothing & nothing good, respectively, to say about them. Hope & Change can not count as those are the first two lies you were fed.

This is an excellent post from a Right Wing Blog:

    http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives2/2008/09/021405.php

“Palin, who is best described as an “up-and-comer,” seems to be taking on legendary status among a sizeable chunk of the party faithful, and this before she has even delivered tonight’s set-piece. It shows, I think, how desperate the party faithful is for heroes.”

The Mighty KOS is tearing Palin apart…

That AIP story is like an Olympic sprinter with 10 foot legs on performance enhancing drugs.

I hope the Democrats are waiting for just the right time to say, “Go!”

  • 15. Rich  |  September 3rd, 2008 at 5:00 pm

Liberalmind- still going with th AIP smear I see.

“Officials of the AIP said Gov. Palin was once a member, but the McCain campaign — providing what it says is complete voter registration documentation — says Palin has been according to official records a lifelong Republican.

A day after making its assertions, on Tuesday evening, AIP chair Lynette Clark acknowledged she was mistaken and that Gov. Palin was never a member.

Gail Fenumiai, director of the Alaska Division of Elections, tells ABC News that “Gov. Sarah Palin first registered to vote in the state in May 1982 as a Republican, and she has not changed her party affiliate with the Division of Elections since that time.”
    http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/09/another-aip-off.html

Well I would guess you would apologize for lying but I don’t think you really care. Piss off.

Why not take the time, David, to sit down and put together an extensive list of flat out lies told by both Sen. Obama and Sen. Biden?

Wouldn’t it be in the best interest of the Republican party and their supporters for you to just put aside whatever time it would take to give us that extensive list?

If you do not have the time to compile that extensive list perhaps some other Republican could come to your aid. Anyone???

  • 19. Rich  |  September 3rd, 2008 at 5:07 pm

I am going to speak very slowly. You and others (um yum, etc) have been claiming she was in the AIP. She is not. You are a liar. Speaking about, or to a group does not confer membership in said group. John McCain has spoken at the NAACP, this does not mean he is in the NAACP, even if it is on youtube.

P.S. At a time your party is being accused of sexism, throwing that word around is probably not the best idea.

  • 20. jayhay  |  September 3rd, 2008 at 5:12 pm

Rich - I agree with you on idiot postings, and that goes for “liberals” too. Here’s my message to folks ostensibly on my side of the fence. Get your facts straight. Don’t engage in un-vetted BS. You look like fools, and our candidate has to then go and publicly bat you down, which he has and will do.

There is so much going against the GOP at this point, but we can lose it by changing the topic from their mistakes to ours. So STFU. You want to be helpful? Go volunteer. Otherwise, don’t play into the ‘oh those nasty media/bloggers’ meme they are now running with.

The only thing I hate worse than GOP idiots is idiots I end up stuck with…

Well, lets start (and if I get the time I will document) that Obama claimed he sponsored legislation that didn’t have his name on it from a group he is not even a member of.

Ayers and the “I was eight -years-old” and “someone in my neighborhood” comments when he has served and funneled a great deal of both public tax dollars as well a donations to his ChiTown cronies while showing zero results with Ayers on two committees (with day-to-day operations) and held his kick-off for Il. senate at Ayers house.

Start there and I might take the time, if I have it, between work, school and the house–but keep whining in mommie’s basement. Have a cookie and think about your buddiy LM’s AIP smear of Palin.

And the AIP in general–seceding was one of four options on their platform…but you don’t know that or failed to mention it. A lie of omission is still a lie.

I have a life and no time to whine like you folks. I also am doing much better under the Bush administration–so I really want “four more years” at least. Another half-truth at best.

    SAR - -
106- Obama is partisan, look up his voting record boner
105-Hill wasnt on the short list as she was not vetted by the Obama team.
104- lie about abortions going up-

The New York-based Guttmacher Institute reported in January 2008 that in 2005 the country’s abortion rate fell to 19.4 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44, continuing a trend that started after the abortion rate peaked in 1981 at 29.3. The institute, a think tank on reproductive health issues, reported that the number of abortions also fell, to 1.2-million in 2005, which it said was 25 percent below the record high of 1.6-million abortions in 1990.

And the federal Centers for Disease Control reported in its latest Abortion Surveillance Report that in 2004 there were 839,226 legal abortions, down 1.1 percent from 2003. The abortion ratio of 16 per 1,000 women has been the same since 2000, it added.

Rebecca Wind, spokesman of the Guttmacher Institute, said the difference in the two sets of numbers reflects differences in data collection. She said the CDC relies on state health departments, and not all states require abortion statistics reporting. Guttmacher does its own survey of all legal abortion providers and reports a fairly high response rate.

In any case, she added, “There’s no way to spin this one. The abortion rate is at its lowest rate since 1974.”

103- Obama dismissed Bomber Bill Ayers as “some guy who lives in the neighborhood”;they had a close working relationship

Obama and Ayers worked on the Annenburg challenge, a multi-million dollar education program. Quite a different scenario from some guy that lives in his neighborhood.

102- Money for Obama’s acceptance speech. Link shows link on official campaing website to buy tickets for 1k a pop. Obama camp shut webpage down after getting caught.

SAR- Hogwash? Follow the links and do some research. Get back to me with your apology when you can. Can you libs get right about one thing today?

Rich, I’ve seen Obama’s voting record, he is not a partisan. Voting for the new energy bill, voting for the modified FISA (I don’t agree with by the way) bill are not partisan acts. Bi-partisanship is the willingness to corporate and compromise, not bend over backwards and take it like a champ. You know, Maverick like.

He didn’t consider Clinton because he didn’t vett her? What would you call the primary campaigns if not a vetting process? What more could they find on her then what they already had? Sheesh.

Ayers has been cleared of all charges and is now a professor. So any student that he influences or works with could be associated to his terrorist activities too? Theres that guilt by association thing again. Problem is now it can be turned around on your guy via Plain. Keep it up slugger!

Obama’s Volunteers solicited the free tickets they were given. People trying to make a quick buck. What people do with free tickets is their own business. Shoot, they even said it was his Volunteers who were soliciting their tickets.

Point taken on the abortion issue. As I understand it a number of people ran with an opinion piece on abortion that they did not source. The piece was in fact flawed. Theres a lot of questions as to why this is under bush or has been tracking this way since 1997. But your right, Obama said they were going up when in fact they were going down. My god, he’s human.

1 out of 5 was not a gross mis-representation or distortion. Sorry rich, doesn’t make the list exactly credible now does it

    National Journal Group Inc.
    Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., was the most liberal senator in 2007, according to National Journal’s 27th annual vote ratings. The insurgent presidential candidate shifted further to the left last year in the run-up to the primaries, after ranking as the 16th- and 10th-most-liberal during his first two years in the Senate.

So your’e saying being bi-partisan is being ranked the most liberal senator of 2007? You are a joke.

“Ayers has been cleared of all charges and is now a professor. So any student that he influences or works with could be associated to his terrorist activities too?

Can you read?. I did not say Ayers was convicted, I said Obama lied about him just being a guy from the neighborhood. He worked with him closely, hence it was a lie.

“Obama’s Volunteers solicited the free tickets they were given. People trying to make a quick buck. What people do with free tickets is their own business. Shoot, they even said it was his Volunteers who were soliciting their tickets.”

You obviously did not follow the link. The tickets were being sold 1 k a pop from the Obama website to big-wig donors, for political cash. Volunteers had nothing to do with it, as the video makes clear it was the Obama campaign secretly selling them on its official website.

Six for six as I see, and there are a hundred more just like it. Feel free to check them out on the website. I haven’t read them all but the top six are all true, which is a hell of a lot better than all the crap thrown at Palin in the past few days.
