Point of Order: Kissinger on McCain/Obama Statements
September 27th, 2008 at 02:16am Kevin Patrick
“Senator McCain is right. I would not recommend the next President of the United States engage in talks with Iran at the Presidential level. My views on this issue are entirely compatible with the views of my friend Senator John McCain. We do not agree on everything, but we do agree that any negotiations with Iran must be geared to reality.”
Hat Tip: The Weekly Standard.
My over all comments on the debate? Small net win for McCain. With the economic turmoil and over 1/3 of the “foreign policy” debate being devoted to the domestic economy, Obama should have scored decisively early. He didn’t and I expect the broader electoral polls to move 1 or 2 points in McCain’s favor. Obama continues to fail to seal the deal. If that continues, McCain wins a tight race in November.
There is a long way to go though. Net-net a good night for the McCain camp.

actually - it went the other way. Most undecided voters think Obama did a better job and are more likely to vote for him.
I see it the exact opposite. This debate was SUPPOSE to be McCain’s big strong point - and the debate if anything went for Obama. Now - what do you think will happen when the debates change to domestic issues where they are faced with a man who by his own admission says ‘he doesn’t know much about the economy’, that voted with the most unpopular president since nixon was impeached 90% of the time, and is consistently out of touch with America.
Not to mention what will happen to Palin when she is forced to answer questions of substance. She got Pnwed by Katie Couric! Biden will mop the floor with her…
Its over go hide for 8 years. Your time is over. Look forward to the most liberal president since FDR and a strong democratic congress to reverse every last policy you guys enacted in the last 8 years. You had your chance and you fckd up

liberalD,
That was spoken precisely in the manner that is expected from a young, uninformed 20 year old, with a poor sense of history and a tepid grasp of the issues. I applaud you.
However, the next debate will come on the heels of an approved bail out package that will have McCains fingerprints all over it and will look nothing like the Obama endorsed Bush plan.
As a conservative, I am embarassed that Bush went to congress asking for tax payers to cough up $700 billion to buy bad paper secured by incompetent Democrats, a plan of which Obama rushed to endorse not wanting to make a tough decision.
McCain, on the other hand, ruffled feathers by not being the go-along-to-get-along candidate and will emerge with a responsible bill that will protect tax payers and put the onus on the very firms that originated this mess by offering secured loans and demanding an infusion of private capital, much as we saw Buffet do on Thursday.
So McCain will link Obama to Bush, putting to rest the McSame screed and then will continue to school Obama in foreign policy and energy.
It’s all down hill from here for Obama.
Sorry.

McCain is back in Washington taking care of our current crisis.
Obama is on the campaign trail taking care of himself.
Thank you Sen. McCain for putting country first.

Did Obama Have a ‘Bush Looking At His Watch’ Moment Tonight?
I wonder if we had a “Bush looking at his watch” moment tonight.
After McCain talked about the bracelet from the mother of a slain soldier, Obama mentioned that he had one, too.
Unfortunately, it would seem that he didn’t have the name of the solder, Ryan David Jopek (sp?), quite on the tip of his tongue. He seems to have to read the name off the bracelet:
Obama: Jim, let me just make a point. I’ve got a bracelet, too.
(Looks up, adjusts wrist, looks down at wrist)
Obama: From sergeant… uh.. (adjusts wrist) uh, from the mother of sergeant Ryan David Jopek (phonetic). Given to me in Green Bay. And she asked me, can you please make sure another mother isn’t going through what I’m going through?

Can you tell me why McCain never looked at Obama once? For a debate it was starting to feel creepy. This could be an indication of where all of Bush 44 flip flops since 2000 have come from. He is having a debate within himself. With so many problems left over form the Conservative administration now is the time for decisive leadership from a person that will look you in the eye and tell you how it is. How will McSame know what’s in Putin’s soul if he can’t look him in the eye?
6. Rich | September 27th, 2008 at 10:58 am
Neither candidate looked at the other often, even though Lehrer tried to get them to. Funny, no comment on Obama not knowing the name of the dead soldier whom he uses as a political prop. he has been waering that bracelet since February and yet doen’t know his name. Odd is it not?

Are you saying that Obama read the name of the soldier from the bracelet, Rich?
8. Rich | September 27th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Canadian- Watch the clip. That is exactly what I’m saying. He has the bracelet for pure politics, and didn’t even care to learn the soldier’s name. Disgusting.
9. hermie | September 27th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Obama kept looking more at Lehrer, hoping that he would bail Obama out.
10. gotbrains? | September 27th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
8. Rich -
uh, no - you watch the clip again. Obama clearly knows the soldier’s name and also his mother’s name.
The problem here for you toadies is that for too long you’ve gotten used to using the troops for your own emotional props without getting challenged with the fact that we Democrats honor and love our country and our troops just as much. Sorry pal, but the blatant emotional pandering of the right is just pathetic. People want to know what the next president is going to do to address these hard issues - not who can wrap themselves in the flag and use the sad stories of our fallen heroes to manipulate people’s emotions.
——–
To Kevin who thinks McCain had a “net-good night”… well, fair enough - that’s how you saw it. But what most undecideds saw was that Obama more than held his own against McCain in his professed strong suit, and clearly laid to rest any doubts that he has command of the issues and is a plausible commander-in-chief. He passed the test of looking and sounding presidential, which was a concern for people not very familiar with Obama, and who had heard over and over that he didn’t have enough experience. Last night he showed he clearly had the stuff to be president. All of the snap polls done after the debate among carefully controlled audiences of uncommitted voters gave the win to Obama by almost a 2 to 1 margin. Even the Fox News audience of uncommiteds overwhelmingly gave the nod to Obama.
But beyond who may have narrowly “won” the debate last night, what McCain desperately needed was a game-changing, clear demolishing of Obama. McCain is sinking fast in the polls, especially now that he’s been revealed as an erratic decision-maker with a penchant for high-flying gambles and poor judgment. With Palin being revealed as an extremely poor choice who has become a laughing stock, McCain needed to crush Obama tonight to change the overall direction of the race. Last night was his best chance to do that, and I think you’ll agree that he fell far short of an overwhelming win.
This result will not change the polls much, even by your own admission - and barring a shift in the polling trends, McCain will lose this election.
11. Rich | September 27th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
No (expletive deleted) you watch the clip. “I’ve got a bracelet too. From Sargeant. uhh, uhh,” looks at bracelet, “umm from the mother of umm Sargeant Ryan David Jopeck..”
Tell me (expletive deleted), where did Obama’ say the soldiers mother’s name? That’s right, you have clear evidence, a short video clip, and yet you still ignore what is right in front of you, and add in a lie. Did Obama not look at his bracelet as he searched for the name? Tell me please, where he mentions the soldier’s mothers name in that clip?
12. gotbrains? | September 27th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
And more on the “bracelets”…
The problem here with the Right is that you are in love with the emotional symbols of caring about the troops - but for you, that’s ALL there is.
Bracelets. Flag pins. Symbols.
Yeah, we all got bracelets, says Obama. We all wear them proudly, just like we do flag pins. But really caring about our troops and really loving our country is much more than wearing a bracelet. It means not sending our troops to fight and die for poor the judgments of the president that end up diminishing our ability to respond to threats.
So John McCain wears a bracelet. Well that’s just great. But what that soldier needed wasn’t a bracelet so that his death could be used to pull emotional strings during a debate - what that soldier really needed was a president who would use force wisely only against countries that were an immediate threat against us. What he needed least was to be sent to fight and die bravely for Bush and McCain’s piss-poor decision to invade Iraq.
As president, you demonstrate love of country by making good decisions on deploying force - not by rashly squandering our sacred blood invading random countries that were no threat to us. Using force in a dumb way is not patriotic.
What that soldier needed was good judgment from his commander in chief, not a damn bracelet.
13. gotbrains? | September 27th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
“Did Obama not look at his bracelet as he searched for the name?”
Well, congratulations to McCain that he recited his obviously scripted and rehearsed Bracelet story. To Obama, wearing the bracelet is not something he regularly uses during debates and campaign stumping. Sorry, he’s not into emotional porn. He instead spoke in response in an unscripted fashion about what it really means to support to the troops - and it’s a lot more than bracelets.
And yes, he glanced down at the bracelet to show it to the room, but he clearly wasn’t reading from it, and would not have been able in the split second glance to have picked up the full name “Sergeant Ryan David Jopeck” - which btw, he pronouced correctly. So clearly he knew the name.
Again, I’m glad McCain has a good bracelet story he’s rehearsed. Too bad he didn’t take as much time to question whether his soldier should have been sent to Iraq in the first place as he did in shamelessly practicing a bracelet story.
14. Rich | September 27th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
So you are admitting Obama looked at the bracelet at least. That is a start. I notice you didn’t say anything about your assumption from the previous post, “Obama clearly knows the soldier’s name and also his mother’s name. ” I’ll ask you again, where in the debate did Obama say the soldier’s mother’s name?
As for this quote from you, ” To Obama, wearing the bracelet is not something he regularly uses during debates and campaign stumping” Is factually incorrect as well.
here is the proof-
“”She gave me this wristband, which I’m very grateful for,” Obama told the Green Bay audience, halting and lowering his voice from his normally upbeat presentation. “I meet mothers and family members all over the country who are still mourning their children but are also thinking about the young men and women who are still over there and wondering when it will end.”
As far as the mother who gave it to Obama, she wanted it to be political-
“Mrs. Jopek said she’s a “political junkie” who was once watching a press conference on television and noticed likely GOP nominee John McCain wearing a similar bracelet. McCain’s was given to him in August by the mother of Cpl. Matthew Stanley, also killed in Iraq, and the Arizona senator’s been wearing it regularly ever since.”
So Obama has this trinket for political purposes since February and never even bothered to memorize who it is from. Sickening, much like your weak defense.
15. Rich | September 27th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
“and would not have been able in the split second glance to have picked up the full name “Sergeant Ryan David Jopeck”
Are you saying that the Senator has some sort of reading disability? How long does it take you to read Ryan David Jopeck? Really your excuses for this laughable chump of a candidate is hilarious.tation tricks
16. Rich | September 27th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Not sure where the phantom words in that post came from. Oh well.
17. gotbrains? | September 27th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
Richy -
For cryin out loud - the full name “Sargeant Ryan David Jopeck” would have wound most of the way around Obama’s wrist. Give it a rest pal - he obviously wasn’t reading the name when he gestetured to the bracelet. It was an unscripted response to McCain’s obviously scripted bracelet story. No one asked McCain to tell a bracelet story - he inserted because he planned it beforehand.
As usual, you are obsessing over these trinket symbols of patriotism and love of country, while you completely ignore actual love of country. And you hyper-focus on every detail of this bracelet idiocy because you can’t handle the substance of what Obama said in response: that McCain and Bush failed these dead soldiers.
But hey - Mac’s got a bracelet story to cover for his monumentally bad judgment in getting our soldiers killed and diverting focus in the war on terror. In fact, all this bracelet bullsh*t is in itself another diversion from the sad truth. If that soldier were alive today, he’d probably tell McCain he could save the bracelet stories, and next time not rush into a stupid, unnecessary war.

“For cryin out loud - the full name “Sargeant Ryan David Jopeck” would have wound most of the way around Obama’s wrist”
Wow are you giving me softballs on purpose? Enjoy this picture that clearly shows the name readable at a glance. You know, if i had ben wearing a bracelet with the name of a fallen soldier on my wrist for half a year, I would remember the guy’s name. Then again I wouldn’t be using it for a cheap political stunt. Gotbrains, your next excuse you pull out of your rear needs to be better than the last ones, because you are starting to look desperate. As far as supporting the troops, I’ll let joe Biden tell you about how he felt Obama supported the troops with his voting.
GREENSBORO, NC — The McCain campaign’s latest ad features a familiar voice in the role of Obama critic — Obama’s own VP nominee, Joe Biden.

The :30 spot, called “Promise,” shows Biden at the Iowa State Fair and on Meet the Press during his own failed presidential run, ripping Obama for voting against funding US troops in Iraq.
“They said they voted against the money to make a political point,” Biden says in the ad. “This is cutting off support that will save the lives of thousands of American troops.”
The narrator adds “Barack Obama. Playing politics. Risking lives. Not ready to lead.

“Then again I wouldn?t be using it for a cheap political stunt.”
Listen, dumbass, it was McCain who first brought up bracelets - because he, like you, have nothing substantive to say. Nobody asked McCain for an answer related to friggin bracelets - he worked that in because he planned it. Obama was responding to McCain, not the other way around, ya toad. Did you even watch the debate Richy? Or did you just read this latest faux manufactured outrage on another drama-queen, wingnut website?
Once again, you completely ignore the substance of Obama’s response: that it is all fine and good to wear bracelets, but what about having the judgment to not send soldiers to die for stupid, contrived reasons in he first damn place? Do you have one god damn thing to say about that? No, because you are hung up on the letter size on a f*cking piece of jewelery. Obsess over your damn bracelets if that’s what you need to make yourself feel patriotic - but do not confuse that with honor and judgment.
You toads are pathetic. We have important issues to address in this country, and we’re going to roll our sleeves up and get on with it. You can either join us in putting this country back together again, or you can get the hell out of the way and go back to dramatizing bracelets, whining about cometics on farm animals, or whatever else gets your panties in a wad. Either way, Senator Obama is going to be your Commander-in-Chief, so you can just call him Mr President.
20. neocon | September 27th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Obama was responding to McCain - gotnobrains?
Because he is an empty suit follower. Obama was on his heels nearly the entire debate. He claimed that McCain was “absolutely right” 8 seperate times.
He did not relate the Georgian-Russian conflict to energy as McCain astutely pointed out.
He is a joke.
21. the_lefty_fool | September 27th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
What a great idea! Instead of talking to them so we can better figure out what drives them, what they want, and what we can do to make them do what we want, we’ll ignore them!! What a great idea!!!
McCain 08: “Ready” to lead.

Neocon- Obama is even following Palin’s lead now. Remember when the dems were screaming she was retarded when she said Georgia should get into Nato?- Now Obama thinks Georgia and the Ukraine need to be fast-tracked into Nato.
Gotbrains- I see you did not answer any of my questions on the bracelet issue. Must suck to be caught lying as much as you have been on this thread.
1. He didn’t read the name (he did, its on tape)
2. he knew the soldiers mothers name(he never said it, again on tape)
3. he didnt have time to read it(it only take a split second to read two words moron)
4.The name wasn’t readable from the bracelet(it is, have picture)
5 The name would have gone all the way around the wrist- (note 4 and 5 kind of conflict- how can the name be too small to read and also go all the way around the wrist at the same time?)
6. Obama doesn’t use bracelet for campaigning-(he campaigned on it in green bay and mentioned at other stops and in media)
In summary Gotbrains, if you are going to come up with some excuses for your weak candidate, at least come up with some plausible ones not easily refuted.
