Rob Port put it best, “We fought the American revolution to reject the idea of monarchs leading by divine right. Now, two and a half centuries later, we’re back to our political leaders being gods.” Sad isn’t it? But, as I have said many times before, the left’s desire to canonize Obama makes him extraordinarily dangerous. He is, perhaps, the biggest threat to our country’s prosperity, freedom, and security in history.

“econ” is back to her silly anti-religionist rantings, coupled as usual with delusional pseudo-memories of things that never happened (“Moses” Reagan) and paranoia (justified) about Newt making a comeback.
You know what is so threatening about Newt? His ideas. Of course he has a history of true leadership, and now he is coupling that with the kind of nonpartisan idea-based problem-solving this country so desperately needs.
We have always known that those who proclaim no need to believe in a Higher Power have in fact proven that they really do need some kind of god to look to for guidance. They have always turned to the State to meet that need, subscribing to form of secular religion, but now they have the best of all possible worlds—-a daddy-State to take care of them and a Messiah to adore.
As the Judeo-Christian God said, “Thou shalt have no gods above Me”, the got of the State has decreed that no god shall rise above the stature and power of the State. But the problem with secular religion is that it has no face, no persona. This is why every totalitarian State has had to deify its leaders—Fuhrer means “father”, Stalin was “Papa” and so on. And now the secular religionists of the United States have the iconic Obama, in all his radiant glory, beaming down upon them, sternly scolding them when they are bad (“I will be ON you” he intones) and laying down the law and being the Father they so desperately need.
No wonder Evan Thomas has no problem deifying Obama—he needs the persona to personalize the religion of his State.
But in fact it has been conclusively proven that Obama is NOT the Messiah: Jesus knew how to put together a cabinet.

The oh-so-predicable feigned outrage reminded me of the time I heard a newcomer to the United States call a black dog “Negro”. ( econobloch, can you explain that the word is pronounced, in Spanish, Nay-grow, and means “black”? Just for the edification of us Yanquis, you know,)
I explained that due to the many varied, complex, and convoluted sensitivities of so many people of color, he could find himself in real trouble if he were to use the Spanish word for black in the wrong part of town or in front of the wrong people. He looked at me in genuine bewilderment and said “So they don’t know they are black?”
The ensuing discussion led me to have to admit that yes, they know they are black, and no, they are not ashamed of being black, but it seems they don’t want anyone to ADMIT they are black. (Now I could add “..unless one is a candidate to be the “first black president of the United States” in which case his 50% white heritage would be conveniently ignored to promote his blackness.)
Sorry, whiners and posturers, if your guy runs as a black man, then there is nothing wrong with commenting on his blackness. I didn’t hear any criticism of being dark.
And it’s not as if cluster said anything truly racist, like saying that as a white man he would arrive at superior conclusions than those of, say, a black man.

I clearly said political detiy as I am sure the fellow from Newsweek meant it in the same context, not literally. reagan did lead the GOP to the promised land. He captured the White House and if I recall correctly the GOP had the Senate of a period while he was President. That had not happened in some time considering Nixon, a criminal was forced from office. This is something, no matter how much you wish it on Clinton despite his Impeachment that never happened to a Democrat.

Newt Gingrich is one of the brightest men in Washington. That’s the Good News where things go pear shaped is that his ego is larger than that of Bill Clinton as is his libido–which is legend. He does have ideas the worry is that they might drift away from offshore drilling to drilling of another sort causing a disastrous moral situation for the rank and file.
Higher power, right. Anglican, that’s all I have to say and that should suffice.
Furher, a German word means guide or leader not father. You have to go three definitons deep in a German dictionary to get that extrapolation. The German Nazi hymn was Das Vaterland [the fatherland] not “Die Fuhrerland” [the leaderland]. Obama is black by every Census of measuring in the United States beacuse he has one drop of black blood in his lineage to three generations. Of course in this new progressive age one can choose to be anything you want really because most people have some African genetic material in their makeup even you Amazona.
As anyone who has read any H L Mencken notes that the great man would say, paraphrasing, “When he does well all will regard him as white for their own interests when he errs however, they will pounce on the darker scintilla of him as if it were two black men that had stolen a lady’s purse.” Two marks for anyone who can tell me who that fine writer was speaking of so many years ago.

Obama isn’t God. He is human like the rest of us, with his own faults, like the rest of us. Not God. Not even close.

I find it interesting how suddenly obtuse right wing eye candy like Amazona gets when it is confronted with evidence of racism within its ranks. (The phrase “eye candy”, of course, is just a compliment that I came up with on the spur of the moment, and any attempts to claim that it has any other meanings or connotations will be dismissed as nothing more than transparently disingenuous outrage-mongering.)

Historically, whites who stood up for blacks in their quest for equal rights have been called nigger lovers. The phrase you used about liking dark meat, though veiled, sounds the same.
Regarding the use of the word niggardly, it would depend on the context in which it was used. Just like the use of a$$hole technically doesn’t violate the obscenity restrictions on this web site, everyone knows what is meant by it.
I have no way to explain away Sotomayer’s remarks except to say Judge Alito said very similar things before he was confirmed. Further, one must look at the entirety of the Judge’s writings and speeches to understand her tendencies. More correctly I should have said that what you wrote was racist. I can’t be certain, based on one comment that you actually act on you prejudices.

As it happens, a) there’s only one God there to believe in (I’m not sure why other monotheists have such a hard time understanding this), and b) my lifestyle fits God, not the other way around. I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I don’t do drugs, or have sex, or curse. I don’t tell lies, nor do I hate. I have little use for the things of this world (which annoyed my family to no end as they tried to think of something to give me as a graduation present). Of course, I am far from perfect, but my lifestyle cannot be faulted.

I, for one, had been giving you the benefit of the doubt, but you just dispelled that. “Dark meat” is a derogatory term for African American women, a fact you were evidently quite aware of at the time.
No. If he had called her a cracker or a white devil or something then yes, but acknowledging the existence of widespread racism and racial tension in the past, particularly among the older generation, is about as racist as it is controversial.

I can not defend Sharpton, or Jackson. They both have said racist things which are indefensible. What you are citing by Obama is not racist. Does he have prejudices? I suppose most people do. However, it is acting on those prejudices that makes someone racist. That is why I cannot say you are racist based on one comment. Just as I don’t think it would be fair to call Sotomayor racist based on one comment.
If you can’t see the similarity between saying someone likes dark meat and calling someone a nigger lover then you are being obtuse. You can hide behind the veil of sarcasm but it is indeed transparent.
You see that’s the difference between you and I cam1. You are an institutionalized union member, with institutionalized and programmed thought. I am a liberated individualist and am able to call out white trash and black trash sans any compunctions of racial demogoguery or overtones.

Sergei: Interesting that you are a Bahai. I have a dear friend who is a Bahai and just returned from Israel where she visited many Bahai. I can’t imagine her turning her life into a cloister. She couldn’t stay off the golf course long enough. Many years ago she gave me the book A Thief In The Night to read. My friend lives her life to the fullest. Existing is not her lifestyle. How sad that it seems to work for you. And no, I have never seen anything by Monty Python. But I can share some hilarious stuff from the Porky’s movies and Spongebob Square Pants.
As I said, not only is that not encouraged, it isn’t even permitted. Part of being a Bahá’í is working for the advancement of humanity, which is rather difficult if you don’t interact with any actual humans.
I’m not quite sure where you got the impression that’s what my life is like. I lead a very rich intellectual life; it just doesn’t require much in the way of physical objects. Some people enjoy exercising their bodies; I enjoy exercising my mind. That’s part of why I’m here. The fact that the things I consider fun (e.g. learning about higher dimensional geometry) are considered boring by most people doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy them; indeed, I am quite frankly mystified as to how people can prefer watching other people run around with a ball when the universe in all its splendor is there to be taken in.
