By now you have probably heard the news that Obama administration has ordered FBI agents to read Mrianda rights to captured terrorists.
When 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammad was captured on March 1, 2003, he was not cooperative. “I’ll talk to you guys after I get to New York and see my lawyer,” he said, according to former CIA Director George Tenet.
Of course, KSM did not get a lawyer until months later, after his interrogation was completed, and Tenet says that the information the CIA obtained from him disrupted plots and saved lives. “I believe none of these successes would have happened if we had had to treat KSM like a white-collar criminal – read him his Miranda rights and get him a lawyer who surely would have insisted that his client simply shut up,” Tenet wrote in his memoirs.
If Tenet is right, it’s a good thing KSM was captured before Barack Obama became president. For, the Obama Justice Department has quietly ordered FBI agents to read Miranda rights to high value detainees captured and held at U.S. detention facilities in Afghanistan, according a senior Republican on the House Intelligence Committee. “The administration has decided to change the focus to law enforcement. Here’s the problem. You have foreign fighters who are targeting US troops today – foreign fighters who go to another country to kill Americans. We capture them…and they’re reading them their rights – Mirandizing these foreign fighters,” says Representative Mike Rogers, who recently met with military, intelligence and law enforcement officials on a fact-finding trip to Afghanistan.
And can you imagine… Congress was not briefed…
Rogers, a former FBI special agent and U.S. Army officer, says the Obama administration has not briefed Congress on the new policy. “I was a little surprised to find it taking place when I showed up because we hadn’t been briefed on it, I didn’t know about it. We’re still trying to get to the bottom of it, but it is clearly a part of this new global justice initiative.”
Can Obama be detained for aiding terrorists? This is absurd. Terrorists who are not talking, or being interrogated cannot provide us with information to prevent future terrorist attacks. It was no accident that we have not been attacked since 9/11. But Obama seems determined to make it harder for us to collect intelligence, and easier for terrorists to attack us.
It is worth noting that Obama himself claimed to oppose reading Miranda rights to terrorists. He said, ”Now, do these folks deserve miranda rights? Do they deserve to be treated like a shoplifter down the block? Of course not.” The Weekly Standard posts video of Obama on he campaign trail last year, mocking this claim made by Sarah Palin during the Republican National Convention:
“Al Qaida terrorists still plot to inflict catastrophic harm on America, and [Obama]’s worried that someone won’t read them their rights.”
Well, looks like Sarah Palin was right. Obama is a liar. Obama is more interested in protecting the so-called rights of terrorists than in protecting Americans. Obama is clearly unfit for office.

I love the implication you’re making with this statement.
Homer: Not a bear in sight. The Bear Patrol must be working like a charm.
Lisa: That’s specious reasoning, Dad.
Homer: Thank you, dear.
Lisa: By your logic I could claim that this rock keeps tigers away.
Homer: Oh, how does it work?
Lisa: It doesn’t work.
Homer: Uh-huh.
Lisa: It’s just a stupid rock.
Homer: Uh-huh.
Lisa: But I don’t see any tigers around, do you?
Homer: Lisa, I want to buy your rock.
Oh good grief, a publication by William Crystal and Fred Barnes which the best they can come up with is
Not on official source, not even a named source, somebody who is supposedly “senior” and supposedly on the House Intelligence Committee.
Matt, this is not journalism. This is more republican echo-chambering. There isn’t even any proof that Obama HAS told anyone to read Miranda rights to anybody – just an “unnamed” source who happens to be in the party that would like to believe it was so.
It’s obviously a slow news day for you on the right, while you try to pretend that right wing terrorism hasn’t struck yet again today.
The Department of Justice confirmed it.
AF,
Well?
Orlando,
The actual specious reasoning is on the left which figures that since we haven’t been attacked since 9/11 that there isn’t a threat…
figures that since we haven’t been attacked since 9/11 that there isn’t a threat…
That’s one hell of a straw man you’ve constructed there. I imagine you’re going to give it what for, right?
These are not rights. The declaration is a warning such that the accused’s right cannot be violated for speaking openly to law enforcement. This is a requirement in the United States. It is a political protection against future suits as well. There are no “Miranda rights” only Constitutional rights that protect citizen and non citizen alike in federal custody on US soil. This was done by someone with a strict constructionist view of the United Sates Constitution, so I am told.
@Both Matt and Mark: That link leads to ANOTHER weekly standard article (same as the original source Matt wrote about) which links to Greg Sargents blog which DIRECTLY CONTRADICTS the original article:
So, you are going to use a different blogger to make your case, AF? One who is pretty far left, previously wrote for TPM and a “poor man’s” Media Matters, and is only able to discuss 1 source?
BTW, where did the second paragraph of the excerpt come from? It’s not in the Plum Line post: http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/torture/happy-hour-roundup-pelosi-to-slap-down-detainee-photo-release-ban/
“Miranda Rights” or more properly the Miranda Warnings which invoke privileges like habeas corpus and the right to remain silent are for American citizens accused of criminal activity within the boarders of the United States but hey, what the F* — let’s make it worldwide for folks who chop heads off without due process, kill innocent people in mass attacks and use the feeble minded to carry bombs. F*ing A…sounds about right for a progressive.
First, Miranda Warnings are for criminal activity—not acts of war. Second, they apply to US Citizens, and legal aliens—not foreign fighters with no state or political statue and finally, I did my time and I am sure it would slow our troops down a great deal to have an attorney with each of them to read the warnings to anyone captured in a foreign battlefield; nevertheless, America wouldn’t weep too long if we lost a few attorneys but let’s start with those in congress that voted for this conflict. Since they are in power—Democrats first of course.
Crap, just to save time and my folks—the attorney would be right behind the 2nd lieutenant as far as life expectancy.
@William: I quote the same source that Matt does. I just interpret it differently. Did you actually follow what was going on? This whole fake outrage is actually originating from a blog entry by Greg Sargent.
@Dbschmidt: If we’re going to try someone in a court of law in the US, the law says they are entitled to certain rights, and also says they are entitled to be informed of those rights. Now I know a lot of right wingers would prefer to let these people rot without any access to justice, because it doesn’t impact them directly – but America is a country of law and justice, and that means that even if it’s distasteful, the law applies to EVERYBODY.
@William: The second paragraph comes from a failure on my part to apply a /blockquote HTML tag after the first paragraph. Apologies for that.
orlandopehead, how does it fee to be living in a cartoon.
Get off the short bus, boy–nobody here takes you seriously…
So, Mark, you support releasing vicious terrorists into the wild where they can plot more attacks on Americans? Because that’s what they’re trying to avoid by doing this. We already have (at least) one unprosecutable terrorist on our hands, Muhammad al-Qahtani, one of the would-be twentieth hijackers. Do you really want to compound the problem? I realize that you don’t want Obama to restore the rule of law in the first place, but since he is, you should at least be happy he’s going about it the right way.
With titles like this, right-wing hate radio, Palin’s comments about Obama “Pallin’ around with terrorists”, etc, etc.
Is it any wonder that we’ve had two right-wing nuts engage in violence against ‘liberalism’?
You foment hatred and then pretend that the DHS report on right-wing groups was way off-base.
Every day, there are violent comments on this blog and thousands of other right-wing blogs. Rush Limbaugh uses the same talking points as Von Brunn. . . where do you think he got his ideas? Malkin poses smiling with a swastika, Glenn Beck rambles on paranoid delusions about the Feds taking away guns. . . and then a right-wing nutjob echos him and shoots police officers. The Governor of Texas talks about seceding from the US, the ‘Tea bagging Parties’ openly discuss violent revolution. . .
And again you are posting a headline proclaiming that OUR PRESIDENT LOVES TERRORISTS?!?!?!?! Look- I thought that Bush’s policies of torture and the Iraq War was a HUGE recruiting tool for Al Qaeda. . . but I NEVER said that Bush loved terrorists! You are WAY OUT OF BOUNDS here. . . if something ever happens to our President, it is in part due to the hatred and violence that your site and others like it incite!
You are fomenting anger, hatred, and violence. . .
If anyone is inspiring terrorists, it is this site and others like it, Rush Limbaugh and his ilk, Glenn Beck, Malkin, Coulter, etc, etc. The recent rise in domestic terrorism can be directly linked to just these types of blogs, radio shows, and television programs.
if you dont think the principals enshrined in our constitution are not worth fighting for culterfan….then you should maybe….leave…
fighting with words is the beginning of the fight to preserve our nation from the fate that barry oblunder and the donkeyrats are leading us toward….yes…simpleton…fighting is a violent thing….you have been called stooge, mental midget, stupid…among other things…that have violently exposed you for what you are…
run coward…run…
JS02-
I stand for the principles enshrined in our Constitution, you apparently do not.
The Constitution in based on principles of law, on a belief that all people are created equally, that all deserve justice.
You apparently are arguing against Miranda rights for all?!?!? Or just when it comes to ‘terrorists’???
Does this mean that Von Brunn (who posted at FreeRepublic, BTW) should be tried in a secret military tribunal- since he would be a terrorist, or the shooter of Tillman- should he be waterboarded since he’s a terrorist? Or just if they’re Muslim or from another country?
We are returning to the US Constitution after a long absence during the Bush era. During the Reagan era, Reagan called himself a “Global Citizen” and criticized those nations in which individuals would ‘disappear’ and be tried and tortured in secret. . . something the Bush administration engaged in.
How is the open and equal application of justice for everyone against the US Constitution?
Bush said “They hate us for our freedom” and then proceeded to take away that very freedom. . . Obama is restoring justice and the rule of law.
just from the aggregate compilation of BS, id say about the only thing you stand for is lying on this blog…
“We are returning to the US Constitution after a long absence during the Bush era. During the Reagan era, Reagan called himself a “Global Citizen” and criticized those nations in which individuals would ‘disappear’ and be tried and tortured in secret. . . something the Bush administration engaged in.”
Well thats interesting..Isnt that what the Obama administration is still doing?
Saying we’ve banned the use of waterboarding; but Mr. Obama still holds the authority to engage in it..secrectly..
Isn’t it ironic when the ones who accuse Obama of “loving” terrorists are themselves the ones inciting terrorism and ‘vigilante justice’?
I hope you folks are proud of the violence you’ve created.
It’s one thing to defend the First Amendment (which I do vociferously). . . but quite another to incite violence- and that’s what you folks are doing, just like the Right-Wing Noise machine. . . it’s very similar to that Ice-T song years ago “Cop Killer”. Sure, he had a right to sing it, but was it really wise to drum up and incite violence like he did?
define…waterboarding…the way the jap’s did it in ww2…or the way they did it in france during the great revolution….or is it…how they tested to see if women were witches that date back to…the 8th century…
but…it could be a harmless tactic as well…the way they did it at the seer training…where they waterboarded thousands of people and not 1 of them died…
hurry now…dont torture us with your indecision…we might just fight back
since you have surfaced long enough to get a breath…i notice you create imaginative concoctions to wail about stooge…i mean cultfan…gee…one could reasonably conclude that the founders of america were terrorists when they fought the brittish armies…because of something they believed in…called freedom…
then again cultfan…it really doesnt impact your mind sufficiantly to conclude that you have the first clue about the first amendment and how we actually twisted its meaning to include every deviant sexual freak and some imagined right to kill your own children…
but what do we expect from a stooge like you…the truth? the whole truth? nothing but the truth?…well…thats 3 things you never had…
You know, arguing with those who don’t base their arguments on logic is useless.
Hard to make a distinction between ‘types’ of waterboarding. . . Even in SEER training, it is considered torture (the REASON they do it is an attempt to immunize the SEALS from torture tactics, in the Marine’s own words).
The question is. . . if one of our soldiers was captured and the same techniques were applied to him/her, would we consider it torture? If waterboarded with over 100 ‘pours’ over a month, would you consider it torture (hint: just about everyone who has undergone it considers it torture, even those right-wing nutcases who didn’t previously, like Muller who lasted SIX SECONDS before changing his mind and deciding it was torture!)
Hasn’t Sean Hannity publicly stated he would be waterboarded for charity? Why hasn’t he? Would his pretty-boy hair get too mussed up? I think Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity should do a PPV charity event to prove that waterboarding is not torture! It would get HUGE ratings, even if it lasted shorter than the Tyson-Spinks fight in 1988!
AF, and others…
My point is no matter one wants to believe these folks are not US citizens in jail for being accused of knocking over a bank–they are enemy combatants that were picked up on foreign soil and are not entitled to the rights and privileges of US citizens.
Military tribunals is where they should all be tried and there is nothing secret about them. Then whatever sentence from acquitted to the death sentence should be carried out.
None of them should ever have the privilege of stepping foot on US soil.
dbschmidt, AF, and others, are not bright enough to understand what you’re talking about it seems. What you just posted has been posted many times but they never get it or there is a new crop of these dim witted oafs and we have to explain to them again and again and again hoping they’ll understand, but I think it’s hopeless they mindlessly listen to the DNC, et al.
some bimbo said;”Hard to make a distinction between ‘types’ of waterboarding. . . Even in SEER training, it is considered torture (the REASON they do it is an attempt to immunize the SEALS from torture tactics, in the Marine’s own words).”
funny…it must not have been ‘politicaly conventient” for you morons to enforce the law for the last 45 years while seer trainging conducted torture on our own troops….
some bimbo said;”Hard to make a distinction between ‘types’ of waterboarding. . .”
oh its pretty simple…you just count the dead bodies moron….
some bimbo said; ”Hard to make a distinction …”
no…its not hard…its just that morons try to manipulate the truth to fit facts that dont exist….and thats what make you such a stooge cultfan…
“oh its pretty simple…you just count the dead bodies moron….”
So, the Japanese pulling out fingernails (which grow back, BTW) and waterboarding soldiers would also not be torture, I guess. Nor would the chopping off of hands and fingers (look, no dead bodies!). . .
So, you’re okay with American soldiers being waterboarded by our enemies?
“The Axis of Idiots”
Jimmy Carter, you are the father of the Islamic Nazi movement. You threw
the Shah under the bus, welcomed the Ayatollah home, and then lacked the spine to confront the terrorists when they took our embassy and our people hostage. You’re the runner-in-chief.
Bill Clinton, you played ring around the Lewinsky while the terrorists
were at war with us. You got us into a fight with them in Somalia and then you ran from it. Your weak-willed responses to the USS Cole and the First Trade Center Bombing and our Embassy Bombings emboldened the killers. Each time you failed to respond adequately, they grew bolder, until 9/11/2001.
John Kerry, dishonesty is your most prominent attribute. You lied about
American Soldiers in Vietnam . Your military service, like your life, is
more fiction than fact. You have accused our military of terrorizing women and children in Iraq. You called Iraq the wrong war, wrong place, wrong time; the same words you used to describe Vietnam. You are a fake. You want to run from Iraq and abandon the Iraqis to murderers just as you did to the Vietnamese. Iraq, like Vietnam, is another war that you were for, before you were against it.
John Murtha, you said our military was broken. You said we can’t win
militarily in Iraq. You accused United States Marines of cold-blooded
murder without proof and said we should redeploy to Okinawa — Okinawa , John? And the Democrats call you their military expert ! Are you sure you didn’t suffer a traumatic brain injury while you were off building your
war hero resume? You’re a sad, pitiful, corrupt ,and washed up politician. You’re not a Marine, sir. You’re a phony and a disgrace. Run away, John.
Dick Durbin, you accused our Soldiers at Guantanamo of being Nazis,
tenders of Soviet style gulags and as bad as the regime of Pol Pot, who
murdered two million of his own people after your party abandoned
Southeast Asia to the Communists. Now you want to abandon the Iraqis to the same fate. History was not a good teacher for you, was it? Lord, help us! See Dick run.
Ted Kennedy, for days on end you held poster-sized pictures from Abu
Ghraib in front of any available television camera. Al Jazeera quoted you
saying that Iraqi’s torture chambers were open under new management. Did you see the news, Teddy? The Islamic Nazis demonstrated another beheading for you. If you truly supported our troops, you would show the world poster-sized pictures of that atrocity and demand the annihilation of it. Your legislation stripping support from the South Vietnamese led to a communist victory there. You’re a bloated, drunken fool bent on repeating the same historical blunder that turned freedom-seeking people over to homicidal, genocidal maniacs. To paraphrase John Murtha, all while sitting on your wide, gin-soaked rear-end in Washington.
Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Carl Levine, Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein,
Russ Feingold, Hillary Clinton, Pat Leahy, Barack Obama, Chuck Schumer,
the Hollywood Leftist morons, et al, ad nauseam: Every time you stand in front of television cameras and broadcast to the Islamic Nazis that we
went to war because our President lied, that the war is wrong and our
Soldiers are torturers, that we should leave Iraq, you give the Islamic
butchers – the same ones that tortured and mutilated American Soldiers – cause to think that we will run away again, and all they have to do is
hang on a little longer. It is inevitable that we, the infidels, will have
to defeat the Islamic jihadists. Better to do it now on their turf, than
later on ours after they have gained both strength and momentum.
American news media, the New York Times particularly: Each time you
publish stories about national defense secrets and our intelligence
gathering methods, you become one united with the sub-human pieces of camel dung that torture and mutilate the bodies of American Soldiers. You can’t strike up the courage to publish cartoons, but you can help Al Qaeda destroy my country. Actually, you are more dangerous to us than Al Qaeda is. Think about that each time you face Mecca to admire your Pulitzer.
You are America ’s “AXIS OF IDIOTS”. Your Collective Stupidity will
destroy us. Self-serving politics and terrorist-abetting news scoops are
more important to you than our national security or the lives of innocent
civilians and Soldiers. It bothers you that defending ourselves gets in
the way of your elitist sport of politics and your ignorant
editorializing. There is as much blood on your hands as is on the hands of murdering terrorists. Don’t ever doubt that. Your frolics will only serve
to extend this war as they extended Vietnam. If you want our Soldiers
home as you claim, knock off the crap and try supporting your country
ahead of supporting your silly political aims and aiding our enemies.
Yes, I’m questioning your patriotism. Your loyalty ends with self. I’m
also questioning why you’re stealing air that decent Americans could be
breathing. You don’t deserve the protection of our men and women in
uniform. You need to run away from this war, this country. Leave the war to the people who have the will to see it through and the country to people who are willing to defend it.
Our country has two enemies: Those who want to destroy us from the
outside and those who attempt it from within.
Semper Fi, J.D. Pendry – Sergeant Major, USMC, Retired”
And Matt Margolis’ streak of wrongness continues unabated:
Why does General Petraeus <3 terrorists, Matt? Do you want to detain him for aiding terrorists? He’s more interested in protecting the so-called rights of terrorists than in protecting Americans. Petraeus is clearly unfit for command, right, Matt?
orlanduh, Are your questions serious? I am amazed at how simple you are.
coulterfan says: “So, the Japanese pulling out fingernails (which grow back, BTW) and waterboarding soldiers would also not be torture?
what, are you a total idiot? you hack on waterboarding, jump to fingernails…and then assume that waterboarding soldiers (in the seer program) would not be torture?…do you have a BRAIN CULTFAN or was it totally fried from your overindulgence on LSD…you have no grasp on REALITY…making the point of debate A WASTE OF TIME…
did yo’ momma tell ya how stupid ya wuz?
Are your questions serious?
As serious as Matt’s are. Ask him just how serious that is; I’m just applying his own (stupid, uninformed) standard.
orlanduh, I think your more serious than Matt about your questions. I’ve been coming here for some time now and I know from my experience here that Matt is smart enough to know better. His question about detaining Obama is an exaggeration, to emphasize that reading Miranda rights to a terrorist is absurd.
illegal combatants….prisoners of war…that all comes under military law…and no miranda rights exist for them…
in reality…since they were no a member of a military force in uniform…they could be considered spies…and summarilly executed…without any trial at all…
I know from my experience here that Matt is smart enough to know better
His track record says otherwise. Seriously, go back and look at his recent posting record; he’s got an unfortunate ability to immediately jump behind things that are completely wrong. It’s pretty embarrassing for him.
His question about detaining Obama is an exaggeration, to emphasize that reading Miranda rights to a terrorist is absurd.
And my question about detaining Petraeus is an exaggeration, too. Get the point now? And what about Matt’s bitchy little statement about how “Obama is more interested in protecting the so-called rights of terrorists than in protecting Americans” and is “clearly unfit for office.” Sure, it’s patently absurd, but do you think Matt was exaggerating then, too?
At any rate, Petraeus not only shot down the notion (that Matt, of course, tried to forward–that’s the aforementioned unfortunate ability of his coming into play) that there is a wholesale secret effort to Mirandize every single detainee, he also said that he isn’t at all bothered that some (not all) detainees were Mirandized by the FBI such that any testimony could be admissible in any future court proceedings.
The question remains, then, why you are so bothered by it.
if something ever happens to our President, it is in part due to the hatred and violence that your site and others like it incite!
Bwahahahahahahaha!!! No worse than what your cronies on the left did for eight years, moron.
You are fomenting anger, hatred, and violence
You are foaming at the mouth, jerk. Mark should ban you for making such accusations. Get real, boy…
I’m just applying his own (stupid, uninformed) standard.
Don’t blame what you do, every time you post, on anyone else, orlandopehead. You are stupid; you are uninformed. You’re a DA, just like President DA. Get off the short bus, boy…
orlandopehead, are you a bus boy???
Sorry I went over your head (even though I was aiming pretty low) and that you can’t hang, Gareth/keef. Try not to be so mad about it, though, OK? Just accept your limitations and move on.
