“I’d rather save my soul than vote for the health care bill”

A bit of courage can go a long way:

Rep. Anh “Joseph” Cao, (R-New Orleans), the first Vietnamese-American congressman and a Catholic, announced this past weekend that, because of the “stealth mandate” for abortion still present in the Health Care bill, he prefers to “save his soul” rather than vote in favor of it.

Cao, the only member of the Louisiana House delegation who had not weighed in on where he stands on the health reform bill, told the Times-Picayune on Saturday that he cannot support any bill that permits public money to be spent on abortion.

“At the end of the day if the health care reform bill does not have strong language prohibiting the use of federal funding for abortion, then the bill is really a no-go for me,” said Cao, who spent time in formation to be a Jesuit priest.

“Being a Jesuit, I very much adhere to the notion of social justice,” Cao said. “I do fully understand the need of providing everyone with access to health care, but to me personally, I cannot be privy to a law that will allow the potential of destroying thousands of innocent lives,” he explained to the Louisiana newspaper.

Naturally, the Democrats are planning on demonizing Rep. Cao – hitting him on radio stations with large African-American audiences for opposing Obamacare. I doubt those ads will mention that a far higher proportion of black children are aborted than white children – the killing of black people, an inherent Planned Parenthood project, probably would be hard to sell to a black audience, ya know? But, if your plan is to simply hide and/or lie about what you’re doing, then this might make good politics. Just call Cao a racist – you know, for not supporting Obama – and hope that enough anger and hatred is generated to cause Cao trouble at the polls. For goodness sake, stay away from the issues at hand or the truth about the Democrat coalition – nothing but trouble for the left in that!

As for Rep. Cao – he’s showing his courage and God will ensure that it all comes out for the best. Win or lose for him in 2010 is immaterial – Democrats think that winning elections is the most important thing, we don’t. Honor and courage count for far more, and eventually earn their just reward.

Indeed–if only you folks could stop lying and develop some of that honor and courage. Then maybe you’d get somewhere.

(I know, I know–pointing out wingnut lies is “deflection” and “slander” and “trolling” and yadda yadda yadda. Move on to the next phase of denial, please.)

TROLL! TROLL! TROLL! Be advised logic and rational discourse won’t work!

hummm jesuits, now there’s an interesting history.

something about rome & the jesuits…

  3. While I respect Cao’s stance, I would hope that the abortion clauses are not the only thing he objects to. He should object to pretty much the entire thing.

  4. orlando says:

jesuits, now there’s an interesting history.

As far as these religious groups go, Jesuits are better than most, I’d say. They really do value intellectual rigor over dogma and teach people to reach their own conclusions rather than forcing the Jesuit conclusion upon them. There’s a pragmatism and openness to Jesuits that is much harder to find in other sects.

  5. coulterfan says:

I think it’s GREAT that folks are taking guidance from the Catholic Church in terms of legislation!

Remember, Vatican city may have criticized public-funding of abortions, BUT they HAVE CALLED for single payer health care in the US . . .just like THEY HAVE in VATICAN CITY!

Specifically, the Vatican’s statement called for:
“a new model of global development centred on the human person rather than profit, and inclusive of the needs and aspirations of the entire human family.”

That’s right- they are criticizing our for-profit health care system and believe that it is ANTITHETICAL to a true pro-life agenda!

Also. . . I hope Cao doesn’t pay into any private insurance plan. . . because ALL OF THEM use this money to fund medically necessary, or Dr approved, abortions!

Further. . . remember that the Vatican criticized our “immoral war” in Iraq? I hope Cao and other “pro-life” Republicans did not pay their taxes because they did not want to contribute to the deaths of innocents in Iraq.

In short, though, all true Catholics SHOULD fight against public dollars going to abortions, BUT they should ALSO FIGHT FOR a SINGLE-PAYER SYSTEM and an elimination of our for-profit system. This is what the Vatican has supported, and this is what all Catholics should likewise support!

  6. orlando says:

So you have no intention to stop lying, then, Mark? I’m (not) surprised (in the slightest).

ALERT: “WHEN DID YOU STOP BEATING YOUR WIFE?” QUESTION. ONLY ANSWER IF YOU DESIRE MORE FRUSTRATION IN YOUR LIFE.

  7. Mark Noonan says:

    Coulter,

The Catholic Church has long favored a single-payer plan, at least of some sort. This is not news – but here comes the best chance for such a thing and Catholics are now being forced to oppose it because of its anti-life provisions.

But, also, you should note that the Church does not condemn making profits in health care – just making profits the center of action. This is they way the Catholic Church views all business…the individual human being is always to be the center of attention; all else is subordinate to this concern.

  8. orlando says:

Well, Mark, you were presented with two examples of the very many lies that you and your ilk are pushing as opposition to health care reform. You have ignored addressing those lies; in fact, you’d much rather propagate those lies.

If you have a problem with pushing lies, now would be your chance to speak up about it, to decry it, or to even say that you don’t agree with the lies. But you have no intention whatsoever of seizing this chance, do you?

You prove my point for me–which must be the source of that “frustration” you feel. Now go ahead and add some all-bold caps to the bottom of this post. It’s the absolute best you can muster, which is pretty sad, really.

what a fool cult fans are!! to consider this an endorsement of socialist programs is like saying that a fly belongs to the seagull family just because it can fly!!

wake up stooge….your twists and spins on the truth are lies…and that about what make stooges liars in reality…

    (fixed).

  11. js02 says:

    Mark,

The catholic church looks for charity in the hearts of men, and in that they look for a single payer system, in the liberty and charity of our hearts, a demonstration of love for our fellow man…..not a mandate of socialist bureaucracy and lies….

The current administration isnt trying to do that.

  12. coulterfan says:

    Mark

Since the Catholic Church advocates for a single-payer system, why don’t you folks advocate to your GOP congress members for a single-payer system of the sort the Church advocates?

One cannot be truly “pro-life” and still opposed to universal health care!

  13. tiredoflibbs says:

coulter, if the single payer system that the Obamateur and the Democrats want to give us is so great, then WHY are they and government workers EXEMPT from it?

  14. coulterfan says:

    tired:

Congress’ plan is NOT single payer (much to my dismay). And Congress and government workers are NOT exempt from it, but they are also not required to take the public option (again, much to my dismay).

Hey, if Federal employees have to take random drug tests, why did the GOP-led Bush-era Congress vote against requiring themselves to take random drug tests?

    But we’re getting off topic.

This is the ‘Conservatives’ chance to PROVE that the public option will be a failure. If the public option is NOT cheaper and at least as efficient as private care, NO ONE will opt for it!

Why shouldn’t we have a choice? Why should there be no not-for-profit option where CEOs are not paid millions of dollars and bonuses are not paid to those who CANCEL or DENY coverage?

And why did NOT ONE SINGLE GOP Congressperson vote to eliminate Medicare and the VA (both of these are. . . shudder. . . SINGLE PAYER!!!)? I mean, Rep Weiner introduced a bill to ELIMINATE single payer coverage in the US- Medicare, Medicaid and the VA- and NOT ONE SINGLE REPUBLICAN VOTED FOR IT!!!

  15. tiredoflibbs says:

coulter, the present plan in Congress is the next step to single payer.

“And why did NOT ONE SINGLE GOP Congressperson vote to eliminate Medicare and the VA (both of these are. . . shudder. . . SINGLE PAYER!!!)?” It is amazing that both of those are rationing care and one is headed for bankruptcy AND you are willing trust these same people to run yours and expect it to be viable!?! Unbelievable!

It is no secret that is exactly what they want to give us. They have stated this publicly. Still, the present plan in Congress exempts Obamateur, the Congress and government workers from participating in it.

AGAIN, if this plan is so great, WHY are they exempted from it?

  16. Amazona says:

    1. Show us one single government plan which is run efficiently and within budget, accomplishing its stated goal
    2. Have a health plan which is also mandatory for all government employees and politicians.

Then come back and ask me to support it. Till then, take a hike.

And for once try to actuall participate in political discussion instead of just playing GOTCHA!

  17. Count d'Haricots says:

This is the ‘Conservatives’ chance to PROVE that the public option will be a failure. If the public option is NOT cheaper and at least as efficient as private care, NO ONE will opt for it!

Are you familiar with restraint of trade and inequitable competition?

By the nature of the market, the “government option” is subsidized and need not run efficiently. By being “cheaper” because of subsidies private insurers cannot compete, employers will be given the choice of paying a “fine” of 8% of payroll for employee insurance or carrying the insurance for the employees. Since the average medium to large employer pays 12% – 14% of the value of salaries for health benefits, the employer must, unless he’s stupid drop the private carriers and shove all employees on the public option.

Since the public option will become a monopoly there is no need to compete by virtue of value or benefit, and with every other government run program as the guide, prices will go up service will go down. Expecting a different result from the same action might make you insane, or a Democrat.

And, finally, if CEO compensation is offensive, I’ll assume that the several dozen “Czars’” compensation is equally offensive since the czars aren’t on contract tied to their effectiveness nor can they be terminated by the shareholders if and when they are found to be corrupt and incompetent.

  18. coulterfan says:

Medicare and the VA have 3% overhead to pay for administrative costs. Private insurance overhead is often over 30%!!!!

Every other industrialized country pays LESS in health care than the US and has better outcomes. The US is ranked 37th in quality of care and 47th in INFANT MORTALITY!

If the public sector is not as efficient as the private sector, WHY are US soldiers paid 1/3 what private contractors are paid in Iraq?

Are you suggesting that public workers, like our SOLDIERS, FIREMEN, and POLICE are inefficient? Should we move towards for-profit fire, police, and military? You think that would be cheaper?

As the Pope said, medical care should NOT be about making a HUGE PROFIT and DENYING COVERAGE. . . it should be about taking care of one another!

  19. ricorun says:

Bean Counter: By the nature of the market, the “government option” is subsidized and need not run efficiently.

What is the detailed nature of the proposed subsidy? I honestly don’t know, and thought you might.

  20. coulterfan says:

Hey. . . just to clarify:

Do the GOPers on this site REALLY want to eliminate the VA, Medicare, and Medicaid?

Do you REALLY want to move to a only-for-profit private medical system that not everyone can afford?

How can you be ‘Pro-Life’ and deny pre-natal care to poor pregnant women? Who pays for the child to be born when the parents can’t afford it? Who pay for the child’s health care? Who pays to keep the child’s parents healthy, so that they can work and take care of him/her?

Don’t give me this crap about going to the emergency room, because they don’t do pre-natal care! They don’t provide birth care. . . and they sure as hell won’t clean junior’s teeth after he is born if he’s unfortunate enough that his parents don’t have dental care!

  21. Count d'Haricots says:

The program calls for the elimination of all three, coulterfan. All “government option” health care will fall into one group delineated by user. If you’d been paying attention, under the Democrat’s talking points are “savings” from bringing Medicare and Medicaid state supplements under the government “Public option” umbrella, Obama bragged about this very thing just three days ago.

“By the nature of the market, the “government option” is subsidized and need not run efficiently.” Means just what it says.

  22. tiredoflibbs says:

wow, coulter, you have the talking points down really well.

Those agencies our and foreign that have such low overhead costs are rationing care. Coulter, there are existing programs for the nations poor – Medicare for one. They do not utilize it. Gee, I wonder why?!?

The “poor” of this country has it better than anywhere else in the world. Where else in the world can you go into a “poor” person’s home and see a flat-screen TV, or a car, etc. etc. It is not my fault that their own ignorance prevents them from utilizing what is already there.

“How can you be ‘Pro-Life’ and deny pre-natal care to poor pregnant women? Who pays for the child to be born when the parents can’t afford it? Who pay for the child’s health care? Who pays to keep the child’s parents healthy, so that they can work and take care of him/her?”

That is another problem. Those concerns have led to the largest ability to defraud the government of billions. Back in New Orleans, some doctors (GP, eye and dental) would BUS children and families to their clinics, have them fill out forms, pay them some miniscule amount, and then bill Medicare for services that were never performed! Those people never demanded checkups, they were getting paid cash.

“Don’t give me this crap about going to the emergency room” Emergency rooms do indeed perform these. A pregnant woman showing up and complaining about pains – her and the baby will be checked out and any medication that is necessary will be provided. If a woman shows up in labor, she will be seen and treated. Sorry to burst your talking point bubble, that is the law they must receive treatment. Teeth are a different matter, but then again there are state facilities already in existence for that purpose.

“Do the GOPers on this site REALLY want to eliminate the VA, Medicare, and Medicaid?”

Now to address the most assinine statement. The GOP will not have to do a thing. The liberals refuse to fix this system due to their desire for single payer. These will die on their own, through fraud (not so much the VA), mismanagement and government incompetence.

The government has mismanaged so many programs and you trust them to be the answer for medical care? If you want the government to take care of you from womb to the tomb, be my guest, but leave me out of it. I’d rather my private insurance.

Again, why are Obamateur and the Democrats exempting themselves from the plan they want to force on us?

You seem to be dodging that question. I wonder why?

  23. coulterfan says:

“Again, why are Obamateur (sic) and the Democrats exempting themselves from the plan they want to force on us?”

Hey, I agree with you on this! I thing Congress and their families SHOULD HAVE the same public plan!

To be clear, though, they are not “exempted”, but are not compelled to take the public option. . . though they CAN opt for the public plan. Just like the general population.

The President is another matter, of course. He has physicians following him around in case of an emergency. He and the VP ARE ONE ENTIRE BRANCH OF OUR GOVERNMENT, after all! The Pres and VP have NEVER had the same private insurance as anyone can buy- not all of us with great insurance plans (myself included) have a team of Doctors following us around with pints of our own blood and oxygen tanks!

But Congress should not exclude themselves. . . but why did the GOP Congress vote for mandatory Federal random drug testing, but NO random drug tests for themselves????

Why do Congresspeople not have to be subjected to breatholyzer tests when pulled over under suspicions of intoxicated driving?

BTW, do you REALLY think that Private insurance doesn’t ‘ration care’? That they don’t eliminate insurance because of pre-existing conditions, deny ‘elective’ surgery, etc, etc???

  24. ranafuerte says:

    Sorry…

Soul saving isn’t included in Congress’s health package.

  25. jeremiah06 says:

Congress may not be in the business of saving souls, but they sure as heck aren’t doing anything to save lives. They’re turning the medical profession into the killing business.

Why is that, you wonder? Must be what they’re drinking. Got a hold on some bad kool-aid.
