Data released by the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) reported 1,074,757 checks in August 2009, a 12.3 percent increase from the 956,872 reported in August 2008.
So far that is roughly 9,076,205 gun bought this year! The total is probably more as NICS background checks may cover the purchase of more than one gun at a time.
This latest jump in background checks show that Americans are solidly in-favor of keeping firearms in the hands of law abiding citizens and clearly shows that proponents claiming the USA wants more gun control are blatantly wrong.
Why are we arming? Because we note, with great care, that the “Justice” Department let thugs who intimidate voters off while setting out to investigate the men and women who have kept us safe from terrorism. Point blank: we don’t feel that our government is properly securing our rights. And so, people are taking out a bit of insurance.
This is just liberty insurance – and I like that it is happening.

It’s a rather narrow slice of the electorate who are arming themselves – a generally paranoid and prickly lot who tend to think more in terms of their own individual advantage than the common good. There always have been and always will be such folks – a younger subset of them dominated the movie “Lord of the Flies.”
They aren’t what makes America noble or good – they just are. Why the Second Amendment is their choicest slice of the American pie really is quite simple: Darwinism, by whatever name, is their philosophy. Even for self-styled evangelicals (who incidentally take the name of their Lord in vain – the same Lord who taught people to turn the other cheek and that whoever lives by the sword will die by it) it’s all about survival and defending what is “mine”.
The whole earth is the Lord’s, mind you – who instructed his people not to put their trust in might or power (Zechariah 4:6) – but that is terribly inconvenient to bring up in such a discussion, while the resident theologian talks about “liberty insurance.” The cognitive dissonance is so thick you could shoot a hole right through it.
I see the THREE STOOGES have this thread under control. Well done!
A thriving democracy requires a vigilant populace. I saw a poster not too long ago that had a picture of Obama with trhe caption:
Gun salesman of the year
LMAO.
I also find it amusing to receive Biblical lectures from secular, ignorant liberals.
Gabby, there is no force superior to having the Lord on your side. Have you never read Acts of the Apostles?
Cluster, isn’t taking lethal force in your hands fairly much the opposite of what Jesus taught his followers to do? I realize most secular thinkers regard Christ’s way as weakness, but wouldn’t authentic Christians strive to follow it?
Taking arms into your hands and protecting yourself against evil, is what Christ was all about. You fail to acknowledge the Teachings that instruct the Faithful to be vigilant against forces that mean harm, and that evil does exist. David defeating Goliath the Phillistine was a great example of taking up arms against foes.
Question is dennis: why do you want so badly for a complacent, and apathetic Christian populace?

Remember the the garden when peter? paul?
one of them cut off the centurions ear with his sword when they came for Jesus.
It is a joke; when a man blind from birth attempts to explain the majesty of the ocean to a sailor.

Huh? It seems to me that you are, at best, chronologically challenged. Not that it surprises me, considering the source. But either way, that doesn’t change the facts.
A superior force? You mean Panthers or some of Obama’s ACORN goons? I think we can route them pretty quick, if need ever arises.
The British is comin’! The British is comin’, get ya gun, we gonna have us a Revolution!
Today that would be …
The Communists is comin’! The Communists is comin’, get ya gun, we gonna have us a Revolution!
I have never owned a gun, but am beginning to think it might be time to change that. I would have to make sure that I can go and practice using it, because otherwise it is just a very dangerous paperweight. I do not feel that the federal government has might freedom and rights as what needs defending. They want me to give up rights for safety, and I firmly believe that there is no safety without freedom and rights.
In your feverish, paranoid dreams Jeremiah…

Look, kjstrouble, you may think the U.S. of A is the only country in the world where the citizens have freedoms and rights but you would be wrong.
There are, believe it or not, places on this earth where freedoms and rights are guaranteed without the need for the population to be armed and dangerous and when compared to the U.S., these places, strange as it might sound, are even safer.

smaller, less populated, different demographics……attempt to educate yourself outside of montreal.
Why do you think Emperor Obama wants a civilian security force trained and equipped as good or better than our military? Only dictators like Sadam Hussein and Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez feel that they need their own security forces, because they aren’t sure that their militaries will support them to act against their own citizens. These forces will be used to disarm our citizens so Obama can impose his vision of a Marxist utopia here in the USA.
Don’t mess with hand guns. Buy long guns (bolt action or semiautomatic rifles) and spend some money for ammunition so you can go to a 100 yd. plus range for practice. If you are a veteran, all the better, because you should remember the basics.
Tyrants fear an armed and dedicated citizenry most of all. I am not promoting violence, I am however saying that we must defend our representative republic.
As for out Canadian observer; remember when the USA sneezes, Canada catches pneumonia! Stick to your own problems. We will handle ours and maintain our sovereignty. Is your country so dull that you have to look over the border? Your nation has a lot of wonderflul and patriotic citizens. Why can’t you be one of them?
RE: Buy long guns (bolt action or semiautomatic rifles) and spend some money for ammunition so you can go to a 100 yd. plus range for practice.
Yes, and some nice scopes to go with them. And buy some cheap ammo for practice, and then some ammo with ballistic tips, of course, core-lokts are good too, as the bullet mushrooms upon impact.
RE: In your feverish, paranoid dreams
flimflam,
Don’t be surprised if Obama keeps up what he’s doing if there is a revolution. People don’t just hand over their lives to some sick dream that a man has for a healthcare plan.
It is sad that ignorance and paranoia are the basis of the conservative movement today. Where was your outrage when W was spending us into this mess? Where was your outrage when W hired tens of thousands of mercenaries(Blackwater) to fight our war for us and coincidentally 9 BILLION dollars in cash went missing in their hands. Perhaps the army you should be worried about is already armed and funded and you are too paranoid about Obama to see the real danger.
