A group of House Democrats introduced legislation Tuesday that would overturn a federal marriage law that denies recognition of gay marriage and gives states the right to refuse recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.
Same-sex marriages are now legal in six states.
The Respect for Marriage Act, unveiled by Reps. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., and Jared Polis, D-Colo, has the support of more than 90 lawmakers.
The legislation would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a 1996 law signed by President Bill Clinton.
This is the “first step to overturning DOMA,” Nadler said, who called the law “irrational and hateful.”
“Democracy doesn’t always get it right,” said Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., who also supports the Respect for Marriage Act. “This should have been corrected a long time ago.”
I love the Orwellian name – “Respect for Marriage”…naturally chosen because liberals would prefer if the average Joe out there doesn’t realize that what is happening is changing the law so that, say, Nevada can be forced to recognize gay “marriages” from Massachusetts. Even on the issues they care most about, liberals feel it necessary to lie.
The plain fact of the matter is that the American people have spoken: gay marriage is not wanted. Only by thwarting the will of the people is gay marriage legal, anywhere…and now Democrats want to allow a judicial back-door for imposing gay marriages in States which have explicitly rejected it. Democrats push this, and we’ll make all sorts of hay over this attempted usurpation of the rights of the States, and of the people.

Just last November, one of the most liberal states in the union, California, overwhelmingly voted down same sex marriage.
Do the elected democrats represent their broader constituencies? Or strictly pander to special interests?

How about the ‘Patriot Act’? THAT’S not Orwellian, is it? To call anyone who votes against it because of clauses which allowed warrantless searches of homes and library records “Unpatriotic”. . . even though it’s actually unconstitutional to search and seize without a warrant! Funny how that works!
Indeed, I believe in limited government intrusion on our personal rights (I have a STRONG libertarian streak in me, as least in terms of social issues). What could be a more fundamental freedom than deciding who one can marry? Isn’t deciding one’s own family one of the very fundamental “freedoms”?
Why should the Federal government tell us who we can and can’t marry? What business does the government have in telling us what we can do with consenting adults in our own bedrooms?
Hey, “Conservatives”. . . where in the Constitution does it talk about marriage??? Maybe we should have something in the Constitution about Anniversaries and Birthdays?

As a conservative, I am concerned about your limited freedoms due to the patriot act. Please provide a detailed list of the actual violations to your personal freedoms that act has inflicted upon you, and I will personally pay for an attorney to represent you.
And in re: to the institution of marriage. If the people of this country, through organized petitions, wish to bring an issue to the government for legislation, shouldn’t they have that right? That’s what the GLTB coalition has done, so you” have to ask them why the government is involved in the marriage debate.

And I don’t want our federal government involved in the marriage debate, but you’ll have to bring that up with the GLBT crowd. They’re the ones that initiated this.

BTW, the ONLY THING that kept her on hospice care was the lawsuit her husband filed on her behalf:
“Schiavo’s husband later filed and won a malpractice suit against her obstetrician, Dr. Stephen Igel, on the basis that the physician failed to recognize and diagnose bulimia in her. In November 1992, the jury awarded $1 million. By February 1993, Schiavo had the money from the lawsuit.”
This money was used to pay for her hospice care, but under TORT reform. . . these types of lawsuits would not be allowed and Terri would have had the feeding tube removed when they family couldn’t afford hospice care. NO private insurance company would pay for a feeding tube and constant nursing for FIFTEEN YEARS!!!
I have to say that I always find it SURPRISING how many Republicans want to be kept alive indefinitely, using extraordinary measures, if they are in a Constant Vegetative State!
I hope all your spouse (if you have one) or parents realize this and can afford to keep you alive more than the 15 years Terri lived like this. . .
