With the most recent polls showing a dead heat between Hoffman and Owens, I really don’t know how this will play out:
Republican Dede Scozzafava has suspended her bid in next Tuesday’s NY 23 special election, a huge development that dramatically shakes up the race. She did not endorse either of her two opponents — Conservative party candidate Doug Hoffman or Democrat Bill Owens.
Scozzafava has “probably made her last campaign appearance between now and Election Day,” spokesman Matt Burns told POLITICO. “She’s releasing her support to the two other candidates.”
“I had a discussion with her last night, and we made the decision after I spoke with her. We talked about it, what this came down to was spending. It came down to the ability to defend herself from the get-go. And that’s the reality. She was unable to define herself where the people didn’t know her.”
Will Scozzafava’s support go to Hoffman or Owens? Are her supporters just plain, old “broken glass” Republicans who will just pull the “R” lever no matter what, and are thus more likely to switch to Hoffman? Or, are her supporters RINOs who only vote GOP as long as they can have someone wishy-washy? Only time will tell…

that was the right thing to do-she didnt have a chance and would only have split the GOP vote.
one more rino sent back to pasture.

“…released her support to the other TWO candidates..”?
What clearer evidence do we need of her lack of conservative credentials?
This will hopefully clear the way for a Hoffman win. A trifecta on Tuesday would be great, wouldn’t it? Hoffman, Christie & McDonnell all winning would send a message, and I would love to hear the MSM interpret that message.
This probably gives Hoffman the win, but it also shows that there is no place in the Republican party for moderates. In the long run I believe this is going to hurt the party more than help it.
Casper,
You mean democrats, not moderates, and no there is no room for people who don’t believe in the 10th amendment, smaller government, lower taxation, and stronger defense.
You can have them. In fact just the other day magnum wanted to kick the blue dog dems to the curb, so maybe we should work out a trade.
She wasn’t a moderate, casper; she was a liberal.
hoffman got the scozzafava’s backing…strange how that works…now that race should be a landslide for conservatives
“keef says:

She wasn’t a moderate, casper; she was a liberal.”
Hardly. Of course at this point anyone who isn’t a hardline conservative is considered a liberal.
If you say so, casper.
She was endorsed by ACORN and Kos. Give me a break…
“She was endorsed by ACORN and Kos. Give me a break…”
Links please.
Sorry, casper, but I agree with Keef on this one, she was way past a RINO, she was a liberal who tried to look like a Republican to get elected.
kjstrouble1,
Proof please.
kjstrouble: she was way past a RINO, she was a liberal who tried to look like a Republican to get elected.
Actually, she ran on her past record. She didn’t try to look like anything but that which she always was. That just wasn’t conservative enough for many conservatives.
Anyway, this race sure is interesting! The question was asked whether Scozzafava would endorse Hoffman. Well, according to a Watertown Daily Times editorial, “During the day Saturday, she began to quietly and thoughtfully encourage her supporters to vote for Democrat William L. Owens.” Also, according to the Syracuse Post-Standard, her husband, Ron McDougall, has announced his support of Owens. So I guess not. But Newtie, the NRCC, Michael Steele, and a variety of other national GOP party functionaries are. On the other hand, the local newspaper, and various unions, aren’t.
On a previous thread I asked whether Hoffman asked for and/or embraced Sarah Palin’s endorsement. I still don’t know. But in that same thread I added that the “scuttlebut” was that many GOP candidates don’t want her within a country mile of them. I was attacked for saying that — and probably rightly so. I suspect it is a bit of an exaggeration, but probably not that much. After all, who has she campaigned for among those running in this year’s special elections? I do know that Bob McDonnell, who is the GOP nominee for VA governor, no longer appears keen to have her show up on his behalf. And I don’t think Christie, the guy running for NJ governor, is likely to invite her. Also, she seems to be having a hard time on the lecture circuit. So basically, that leaves Hoffman. Maybe. Finally, John McHugh, the guy who vacated the seat to become Army Sec, is probably the best endorsement any candidate could have. But he has been curiously silent. It’s all so very interesting!
