What Was That About Obama’s Wonderful Foreign Policy?

Mark Steyn over at NRO’s The Corner finds the perfect situation:

Two stories from The Times of India. One:

NEW DELHI: Prime ministerial lunches are rarely fun affairs. People sort of get on with it, and then get on with their lives. Not on Friday. Early in the day, former US president George Bush, on a pleasure trip to India, announced cheerily, “I’m off to have lunch with my old pal…”

Colleagues reported that Singh was rarely as “chirpy” as he was on Friday afternoon. The conversation was light and sparkling, there was a lot of laughter and banter. So when Singh talked about how much he appreciated the huge gesture of the nuclear deal, Bush quipped, “Yeah, it was a big deal and to get it we had to break a bit of china.”

Two:

Washington Gasps At Hillary Charm-El-Shake Offensive That Leaves Islamabad Stunned

Good thing those arrogant swaggering Texas cowboys aren’t blundering around the world screwing up America’s global relationships anymore.

Remember – the only thing “screwed up” in American foreign policy during the Bush Administration was that a whole bunch of hand-wringing, liberal bed-wetters were upset about it. Normal people thought things were going just fine – and they were. Now Obama is rapidly undoing all the good that was done…

I kind of like the aggressiveness of Hillary, as much as I could tell from the article. Remembering the hysteria during the Smear John Bolton campaign, when Lefties were all in a tizzy because they didn’t think he was sweet and compliant enough to be a diplomat, I argued that true diplomacy is not a matter of drop trou and grab ankles, but the need to talk tough when necessary. You can’t negotiate from a position of weakness.

So on general principle, Hillary may have been doing a good thing.

But the woman IS abrasive, and it is also possible that she let too much of the Real Hillary show through. She is terribly clumsy, as seen in the embarrassing “Reset” button fiasco—she does not do whimsical very well. Blunt and abrasive, she does do well,

No one brought her on to be charming. They either needed a real set somewhere in the Administration or they owed a massive debt that had to be paid off, but no one can be surprised at her persona.

Bush did charm people. He was tough but knowledgable and respectful of other cultures and traditions, and he established good personal relations with a lot of foreign leaders.

But in an administration which has, so far, seemed to depend on charm and the kindness of strangers, keeping its aggressiveness for domestic opposition, a balance to wishy-washy appeasement might not be a bad thing. We’ll see if Hillary went too far………

    “She (Hillary) is terribly clumsy….”

Yep, just recently she let the cat out of the bag and liberals are not to keen on what she said, “We tax everything that moves and everything that doesn’t.”

“You can’t negotiate from a position of weakness.”

Evidently, the Obamateur administration did not get that memo. Where is the golden tongue of the savior of the world? Meeting without precondition was a sure way to get agreements finalized.

What happened? (of course, those with an ounce of common sense knows that those words spoken by the Obamateur during the campaign was to get the vote of the peacenicks and the gullible. Now that the election is over……….. different excuses). The idiot-in-chief is in way over his head and he has no clue what to do and this will effect what Hillary says and does.

  3. The Times of India is not a reliable source for information on US-Pakistani relations. I am very surprised you, or anyone else, would think that it was.

In reality, Hillary’s tough talk is paying off. Zardari has now committed to eliminating militancy from Pakistan, and the foreign minister has announced that Pakistan will be assisting the US in formulating its new Afghan policy. This is exceptionally good news not only from the point of view of US-Pakistani relations, but also because if there’s anyone who understands that you can’t just abandon the countryside and protect the population centers, it’s Pakistan.

On a related note, both Kaniguram, South Waziristan’s second largest city, and Makin, which might be called the Islamic Emirate of Waziristan’s capital, just fell. This means that the Taliban now controls only two major cities, Sararogha and Ladha, and Sararogha is completely surrounded by Pakistani troops. I suspect that the Taliban will make its stand in Ladha, but given the unbelievable rapidity with which Makin was taken (troops reached it just yesterday), I suspect that they may be temporarily disbanding à la the Islamic Courts Union so they can then either reestablish themselves after the troops have left or (more likely) launch a guerrilla war. It is also possible that they really are disintegrating, à la the Iraqi Army, since I don’t imagine the attacks on schoolchildren and housewives have gone over very well with the rank and file, and the Mehsuds in general are tired of being viewed as terrorists. It is not, however, something that I would count on.

    Sergei,

Probably a better source for Pakistani affairs than, say, a State Department press release.

The point: Bush wasn’t what the left says he was.

  7. Mark, you do realize that a) India and Pakistan have fought four wars since they were partitioned, b) they still loath each other with a passion generally reserved for soccer matches and the Middle East, c) they’re both jockeying for position with the US, d) that the head of the State Department is called the “Secretary of State”, not the “Foreign Minister”, e) that the Secretary of State is named “Hillary Clinton” and is an American woman, not “Shah Mehmood Qureshi”, who is a Pakistani man, f) Dawn newspaper has no connection — overt, covert, or hallucinated — with the US Department of State, and g) it is customary to actually read a link before commenting on it?

Also, there’s a new editorial in Dawn which praises Secretary Clinton for her remarks.

That is because India has lived up close and personal with islam and muslems.
That should be very telling.Every where in the world where islam takes root there is strife.

Oh yeah and the kick KISS ASS headscarf was a nice touch.
Kind of like out “president” bowing to a muslem “king”
