The moth cannot resist the flame, it would seem:
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Friday that the Obama administration will push for “immigration reform” by giving the estimated 14 million people who are in the United States illegally “fair pathway to earned legal status.”
“A tough and fair pathway to earned legal status will mandate that illegal immigrants meet a number of requirements—including registering, paying a fine, passing a criminal background check, fully paying all taxes and learning English,” Napolitano said Friday at a panel discussion at the liberal Center for American Progress in Washington, D.C.
“These are substantial requirements that will make sure this population gets right with the law,” Napolitano said. “It will help fix our broken system.”
As I’ve said many times before, I am in favor of a path to citizenship for long-term, illegal residents of the United States. So are three or four other people. Pretty much, the American people have spoken on this – the border is to be secured. And, then? Well, once the border is secured, you may ask, again.
It is political poison to attempt anything which isn’t first and foremost an effort to secure the border – to make it impossible for illegals to just wander across it. Americans have seen the videos of illegals just waltzing in – and they also saw all those Mexican flags at the pro-illegal-immigration demonstrations a couple years back. The decision has been made – and politician attempting to finesse around this core, popular desire is playing with fire. So, naturally, Democrats are walking over to the fire with extra gasoline.
I guess they are still figuring that they’ll gain more votes in the long run than they’ll lose – but even if that is correct, by piling amnesty on top of Obamacare on top of Afghan dithering on top of Cap and Trade on top of Stimulus on top of TARP the liberals are risking such a massive melt down that even if 100% of Hispanics vote for them, it won’t make a difference. The only thing left for the liberals to do is advocate gun control or a national pro-gay marriage law…
Which, the way things are going, is probably right around the corner…

why would we reward people who hide the drug trade crossing out border…or aid in breaking out laws…its an insult to every one who worked hard and came to america lawfully…that the constitution we uphold is nullified and the duty congress holds to protect and defend our borders and control immigration is compromised becasue they refuse to bar illegal immigrants and deport them…no…if we fail to uphold what we have…which is fair…what good will we do to abrogate that and impose a lie to compensate for the corruption of our elected officials?
I’m all for such a “path to earned legal status” — “Go back where you came from and get your sorry, law-breaking butt in line behind those who have been following the rules — and take your anchor babies with you.”
Somehow I doubt that is what the Obama Regime will be proposing.
Im about OVER paying every “moocher and looter’s” way.
Im going to avoid paying any federal taxes by any (legal of course) means possible…..IM DONE>>>>>>>
neocon, you should know better than that. you don’t “pay” any taxes now. the government steals it from you. and when they say they aren’t going to steal as much from you at your paycheck, they’ll steal it from you somewhere else.
work hard and the government steals more from you. that’s a fair system, don’t ya think?
raging
you are 100% correct however at this time in my life I own my own business…some wiggle room.
(statement for the irs) There is always the possibility for cash work Hmmmmm?
which I whole heartily condemn :)
raging
work hard and the government steals more from you
What is worse is they steal it from us and give it to the “looters and moochers” who produce nothing and will be the death of this once great republic.
There is always the possibility for cash work Hmmmmm? which I whole heartily condemn :)
Yeah, me too, heh. I’ve gotten in the habit of asking people who do work for me (seal my driveway, pressure wash my house, house repairs, etc.) how much of a discount there is for CASH. Amazing how much less people will take when they know there is no paper trail.
Spook,
Accepting cash in the health care industry is no different. Next time you’re at the doctors office, ask him how much less if you pay in full with cash. I have received 50% discounts.
Has anyone heard that California is now “taking” an additional 10% of peoples income in an effort to prop up that failing liberal state? If anyone wants to know where Obama is headed, look at California.
While I understand and agree with the necessity to establish some way to deal with the millions of scofflaws we have allowed to invade this country, I am absolutely 100% AGAINST any plan that would ever allow them the privilege of citizenship.
Firat, we need reasonable and practical laws. For example, now there is no penalty for being here illegally. There is a modest penalty for ENTERING illegally, but none for being here. ?????
So before we do anything else we need to address that set of problems. We need to establish, first, a decent border security system. We need very strong penalties for those trying to enter illegally, not just a ticket home so they can try again. And we need strong penalties for those who are here illegally and who do not register.
Then and only then is it reasonable to establish a registration system. This should demand registration within, say, 60 days, with immediate deportation of anyone found here after that time who has not registered. And not just a ticket home—a record that will prevent this person from ever having legal status in this country, ever.
Registration should convey TEMPORARY legal status, while background and criminal checks are being done. Criminals who have served their time go back home. We don’t need them. Criminals who were arrested and fingerprinted but who never showed up for court are tried, sentenced if found guilty, and then sent home. Criminals are never eligible for legal status.
Those who pass the background checks and can prove employment and who pay a fine can apply for a two year work permit, extended to another 8 years after passing an English proficiency exam.
After 10 years of crime-free employment in the US, the person can either apply for permanent residency, which would require additonal English proficiency and study of American law and history, or he can go home. His choice.
But no citizenship. Ever. We need future generations of immigrants to respect our laws. There is nothing at all wrong with having a child ask “Why can’t Grandpa vote?” and being told “Because he came here illegally, and that is the consquence of breaking that law”.
They need to buy more votes, come next November they are going to need them.
Tired, buying votes is precisely why the Left is so intent on making citizens out of these lawbreakers.
and so….who picks the fruit, vegetables and grains you eat? They do “jobs Americans don’t want”(if ever there was a phrase that portends the end of a society…) I live in Los Angeles, the illegal immigrant capital of America. Let me tell you, the vast majority are not drug traffickers. The biggest problem with illegal immigrants(mostly from Mexico) is that they have too many children. Now, I realize this is poison to a Catholic’s ears but they have five children and live in a studio apartment(or a converted garage). There is no home life, and the parents have no idea(nor do they have the time) of how to raise kids in America. The kids turn to gangs because their home lives are so chaotic. I have seen beds that are shared by 2,3 sometimes 4 people. Would you want to come home to that? That’s why the streets and gangs become the kids’ families.
In order to fix the immigration problem, we need to educate the immigrants to the norms and standards of American culture. We need to find a way to deter them from having so many children(possibly via state, federal aid and the threat of deportation).
As far as California(and the rest of the country) being broke goes, it’s because the rich have stopped paying taxes. What was the tax rate at the highest tax bracket in the fifties and sixties…70, 90 percent? All our infrastructure and social welfare programs grew around that income. Well, the rich don’t pay as much tax now and many go so far as to hide their money offshore. And yet, social welfare programs did not decrease along with the revenue.
As far as California(and the rest of the country) being broke goes, it’s because the rich have stopped paying taxes.
You’re kidding, right? In the mid-80’s, when Reagan lowered the highest marginal rate from 70% to 28%, the wealthiest 1% were paying over 25% of total income taxes. By the start of Bush 43’s second term, the top 1% were paying almost 37% of all income taxes.
All our infrastructure and social welfare programs grew around that income.
What a total load of crap.
And yet, social welfare programs did not decrease along with the revenue.
In your haste to post your Leftist talking points, you screwed up the last one.
ok retired, I’m not going to argue historical government finance with you…I’m interested in what you have to say about the immigration issue
blowing it out yo beehind huh…last i checked its not jobs americans would take…its jobs americans cant get because illegals will work for 10% of what fair wages are…migrant labor’s stack up 12 families in one house and pick crops for well below minimum wage…and you defend that?
get real…its NOT that americans will not work…it THE INS that WILL NOT ENFORCE THE LAW and CONGRESS that ignores the problem…
steinerla…
tell you what lets deport all of the illegals and you can be sure that the 10.2 percent of Americans who have no jobs will line up to take those jobs that supposedly no American wants. That 10.2 doesn’t represent all Americans out of work at this time. So the old tired line of there being work that we won’t do is just that old. For many if the choice is your children going hungry or doing a dirty job you can bet that they will do the dirty job.
Illegals don’t want our “norms or standards” they want our money and they want the Southwest back. Did you not see the protests in the Southwest not long ago? Personally I didn’t understand why the INS trucks weren’t rolled out and illegals given a one way ticket back home.
ok retired, I’m not going to argue historical government finance with you
steninerla, you were the one who brought it up, dumba$$!
Yeah, sten can parrot a bunch of leftist hooey but can’t back up a single thing, or argue a single point. “…the rich don’t pay as much tax now…” ??????
In Greeley, Colorado, Swift and Company’s meat packing plant was raided because it employed so many illegal immigrants. The bleeding heart lying left carried on interminably about how these were “jobs no American would do” until Americans lined up around the block to apply for those jobs.
So sten, what about my post gets you riled up? What about my list of ideas for immigration reform fails to address the issues you raise?
And don’t forget, any effort to assimilate foreigners is attacked by the Left as American arrogance, racism, and a variety of other claims that we have to RESPECT DIVERSITY, blahblahblahblahblah. We have been complaining for decades now (“we” being normal Americans, most of us conservative) that the melting pot America that prospered thanks to its immigrants, offering new hope and freedom to those who came here, has become a salad bowl America where immigration is unchecked and unregulated, and newcomers are hyphenated and DIVERSE as hell, not even learning to speak the language much less learn the culture.
Let me see, now which party is it that demands bilingual or multilingual education, keeping kids from learning the language of the country where they live?
As ye sow, so shall ye reap, bleeding heart radical Liberals. Now one of your own is bleating about the Unintended Consequences of your stupidity. Not one smart enough, or objective enough, to understand the underlying reasons for the problems outlined, but still aware that they exist.
I guess that’s a start………
funny how no one mentions the companies that do the hiring.
Remember, it was Napolitano that cracked down on “illegal employment”(that’s the illegal practice of companies hiring people who they know are illegals, even probably know they are using false social security numbers).
Our borders are so easily crossed by people simply running across yet we can supposedly build a nation half a world away? Don’t you think that if the government really wanted to they could completely lock down the southern border?
They could. They don’t because cheap labor is good for big business. What did Bush do as governor of Texas to stop illegal immigration?
Obama wants to provide a path to citizenship because that would then put the illegals on the same level as legal citizens…no more cheap labor. He wants to strengthen the border so no new illegals will cross. To deport the millions of illegals here now is a logistical and financial impossibility.
He wants to strengthen the border so no new illegals will cross.
steiner, do you have some credible evidence of that, or is it just wishful thinking? I mean, after all, BHOzo also says he wants to find and cut out the waste and fraud in Medicare and Medicaid — nice sounding platitude but hasn’t EVER happened, and never will.
Amozona,
your plan sounds fine to me. I’ll take it a step further: biometric verification. And not just fingerprinting as I’ve heard people can chew their fingerprints. I’m talking retinal scan.
Spook,
I know what you mean about fraud…I see it everyday in the welfare office, the WIC office, disability insurance. The fact is we live in an age where computers can process trillions of pieces of information in seconds. I think fraud can be reduced(although never completely eliminated) via biometrics and modern technology. Obama has mentioned biometric verification many times as well as modernizing medical records processing.
Napolitano declared a state of emergency as governor of Arizona and freed up 1.5 million federal dollars which went to border patrol.
She vetoed a bill in 2006 that cracked down on employees hiring illegal immigrants saying “it let employers off to easy.” She then signed a bill that would strip businesses of their licenses if they hired illegal immigrants.
steiner
funny how no one mentions the companies that do the hiring.
WHY?
is it private business job to check the legal status of people living here in the US?
is it private business job to discriminate between people who the govt accepts on our soil,
pays welfare to, schools their children, heals them at our medical institutions and refuses to deport them, gives them drivers licenses…..
now it is some EEEEEEEEVVIL business that gives them job’s fault???
WHEW!!!! camon!
