Democratic Senator Max Baucus nominated his girlfriend to be US Attorney in Montana while they were dating.
Roll Call reported:
Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus’ office confirmed late Friday night that the Montana Democrat was carrying on an affair with his state office director, Melodee Hanes, when he nominated her to be U.S. attorney in Montana.
First off: Just imagine if this had been a Republican!
Anyways – here we see the complete disregard for basic decency and the contempt our political class has for us and our morals. It should (a) never have occurred to Senator Baucus to have an affair with a subordinate; (b) never have happened before his divorce was final; (c) never should have occurred to him to nominate the party to his adulterous and possibly illegal affair as US Attorney. But, Baucus didn’t care – he’s a Master of the Universe and we peons just don’t have the right to question him.
Get out, Senator – resign, right now.

That we know of. Ensign offered up a cushy job and an even cushier severance package, but I suppose that doesn’t count because it wasn’t a government job.
Look, when are you going to stop being hypocritical? When is the right going to start offering cheating politicians the boot instead of forgiveness? Fair enough to call for a Democrat who is having an affair to resign in disgrace; he should, and I have no problem with calling for that. But Republicans have reacted with “Oh, he’s sorry, and he’s a Christian, and God has forgiven him so everthing’s fine now” to such sex scandals, and it is hypocritical for anyone to accuse the Democrats of being “rotten to the core” and yet behave that way towards cheating Republicans. Rules cover both parties.

@Neocon: Truthisright has a point – ALL of these people that hold public office are by the very nature of the office they hold, under scrutiny. They are rolemodels, for good or bad. Their behavior needs to be exemplary because they are looked up to by those not in office.
This means when they enter office, things like affairs cease to be private matters. Getting a mistress a job be it in government or in a private firm by using your public position is wrong, and it’s unforgivable. This goes for both parties. You cannot accuse one party of being corrupt or rotten and at the same time excuse that behavior in your own party – it just reveals your own corruption.
I guess, my first question would be: Is she qualified? If she is, then what’s the problem? As for Vitter, Ensign, and Sanford, the question should be, did they break the law? If not, I don’t care.
My initial reaction would probably be quite similar: “Good! Maybe we can get rid of him!” Baucus is not exactly well liked.
To the best of our knowledge, Ensign’s affair was with the wife, not the husband, though I suppose it could have been both.
