Fighting to Save Marriage in California

The underlying good sense and adherence to basic morality is coming through even in California:

According to the latest poll from California, those fighting for the defense of traditional marriage have a nine point advantage over activists seeking state recognition of same-sex marriage.

The poll released on Tuesday afternoon by the Knights of Columbus, reports that the drive to pass California’s Proposition 8 is leading among likely voters 52 to 43 percent. If Proposition 8 is passed, it will amend the state Constitution to say, “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in the state of California.”

The poll also shows that Proposition 8 leads in every region of California except the San Francisco Bay Area, where 58% are opposed to the measure.

Californians’ opinions on the State Supreme Court ruling that allowed same-sex couples to be recognized as “married” by the state are evenly divided.

Fifty two percent of likely California voters believe the ruling was wrong to have overturned the 2000 referendum in which voters approved reserving marriage for opposite-sex couples, and 72 percent believe the decision should be left to the voters, the poll found.

The Marist College Institute of Public Opinion, which conducted the poll between September 28 and October 5, 2008, also uncovered some results that point to the cultural and moral uncertainty surrounding the controversial issue of homosexual “marriage.”

For instance, more than half of the 43 percent against the bill said they were likely to change their mind when reminded that Proposition 8 would not affect same-sex couples’ ability to form civil unions. Moreover, 88 percent of those in favor of civil unions said they viewed marriage as between one man and one woman.

And this is why the proponents of gay marriage prefer to go through the courts - the supporters of such a thing are a tiny minority, even among many Americans who consider themselves liberal. Its not wanted, it never was wanted, it never will be wanted - save by a small group which, unfortunately, is tremendously well funded and has the support of the so-called “commanding heights” of American culture and higher education institutions.

As unpopular as it is and as potentially destructive of other liberal hopes, you’d think the proponents of gay marriage would give it a rest and move on to other issues which have more popular support, but they don’t. Why is that? Because the eventual goal is the end of faith and family, and gay marriage is just another useful tool in destroying both. Raised up against real families and real religions will be counterfeits of both - with the addition of the fact that in the name of “protecting” the counterfeits, the real things must be curbed in the public square.

The left never gives the non-left a moment’s peace - they are ever busy finding new ways to chip away at this or that aspect of our civilization. Defend this area, and they move off to that area, knowing that the whole thing stands or falls as a unit and any support damaged weakens the whole structure. This unremitting war against us must be fought in the same way - we must defend our civilization tooth and nail; the line must be drawn and our demand of “thus far, and no further” prevail - it is either this or we’ll just throw away 2,000 years of human advancement and turn our selves and our children over to monsters in human skin who think they can create the Kingdom of God here on earth.

California Allows Men and Women to be “Groom” and “Bride” Again

Mighty nice of them - and, perhaps, a reflection on the way that the defense of marriage amendment is gaining strength amongst the California electorate as November approaches:

The California Department of Public Health, which provides marriage-license forms to counties across the state, will again allow couples who contract a marriage to again identify themselves as “bride” and “groom” on their marriage licenses starting in November.

According to the California Catholic Daily, following the California Supreme Court decision imposing same-sex marriages in the state, the vital statistics section of the state health department created new marriage license forms allowing couples only to identify themselves as “Party A” and “Party B.”

The change was strongly protested. Rachel Bird and Gideon Codding of Roseville, California last week sued the state over the elimination of the traditional description.

However, a spokeswoman for the Department of Public Health told the Sacramento Bee the new forms were not a response to the lawsuit

“Many Californians have asked to have the option to identify as ‘bride’ and ‘groom’ on their marriage license form,” says an announcement on the Public Health Department’s web site. “The California Department of Public Health has been reviewing how we can provide those options in a way that is consistent with court rulings on marriage. The state will begin using new forms effective November 17th that will include boxes for ‘bride’ or ‘groom.’ Identifying as a ‘bride’ or a ‘groom’ is optional, not mandatory.”

Under the new marriage-license rules, couples may choose “bride” and “groom,” “bride” and “bride,” “groom” and “groom” or leave the section blank, the California Catholic Daily reports.

Party A and Party B? If there was ever a doubt that the ultimate purpose of gay marriage is to tear down marriage it is in this sort of Orwellian nomenclature. “Will the party of the first part, known henceforward as ‘Party A’, pledge to be nice to, respect and confer regularly with the party of the second part, known henceforward as ‘Party B’. I now pronounce you mutually supportive, you may co-join your lips”. Marriage is not just a thing to do, but a sacred - and very public - trust; the means by which we create and rear the next generation. To insert same-sex marriage into the mix is to walk down a path to the dissolution of the very concept of marriage, as well as the end to the desire to have children at all.

Fortunately, it does start to look like the gay marriage proponents have over-reached and are about to be smacked down - but it is also getting to be high time to end this debate for good and all by passing a constitutional amendment defining marriage as being between one man and one woman.

Sarah Palin in California?

There has been a bit of back and forth on Governor Palin’s visit to California but what strikes me about the trip to California is the bit about the Republican Vice Presidential candidate going to California. Pull out of MI and work CA? Its very strange…though I’m going to keep a bit of faith in McCain on this one. For months now McCain has been continually written off and every time there’s a bump in the road there are a thousand pundits to explain why McCain lost in 2008, when 2008 isn’t even over, yet…and then a few days later we see McCain come roaring back.

There’s a reason Palin was sent to California, and perhaps it is in line with my view that a great deal about Campaign ‘08 is not as it seems.

Making a Bid to Put California in Play

A couple months ago, this was an impossibility…now, its just something with little chance, but that still works to McCain’s favor:

Post-convention swing state polls are tipping toward Sen. John McCain, the TV pundits are waxing about “The Palin Factor,” and Sen. Barack Obama’s California supporters are freaking out about a race Democrats were uncommonly confident about only a month ago.

Conversely, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s addition to the GOP ticket jolted Northern California Republicans out of what one described as their “Underground Railroad” existence in one of the nation’s most liberal regions. Ever since her speech to the Republican National Convention on Sept. 3, party officials say volunteers have been contacting California GOP offices in numbers unseen since Ronald Reagan was on the ballot for the White House…

…Republicans aren’t giving up on California. California Republican Party chief operating officer Bill Christiansen said some private polls put the two candidates within five points of each other, and the McCain campaign is staffing 50 offices throughout the state. Four years ago, the Bush-Cheney campaign barely had a presence in California, and spent little money. “But we are fully funded this time,” Christiansen said, declining to give a figure.

The state GOP is making 125,000 voter contacts every weekend, “which blows the doors off of what we were doing four years ago,” said Christiansen. “Sarah Palin has put a shot of energy into this race.”

Last week, the McCain campaign e-mailed supporters to say it was “looking for volunteers who are willing to spend the final 10 days of the campaign helping in a nearby state.” But at the San Mateo County branch of the McCain campaign, 300 people turned out last week for its volunteer kickoff event; the turnout was goosed by Palin, organizers said. Now the office is welcoming first-timer campaigners like Phil Lehman, a 63-year-old Foster City resident.

His reason for volunteering: “Sarah.”

“There’s a realness to her, a believability,” Lehman said. “I think she’s going to eat Joe Biden’s lunch at the (vice presidential) debate.”

The initial boost to the GOP out of California is the number of volunteers who will be available to help the GOP win Colorado and Nevada - making phone calls, donating to the RNC and the State parties. This, in and of itself, is a great things - but there is more here.

Winning California would, of course, ensure a GOP victory - but, lets face some facts here, the chances of actually winning California are very slim. But that’s just it - they are slim, not non-existent; and in this there is the chance that we can force Obama to fight for California. Every dollar and minute spent in California, New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania and New York is a dollar and minute not spent in Colorado, New Mexico, Iowa, Ohio and Florida…in other words, we can move the fight to Obama’s side of the field and thus have a clearer shot at maintaining our 2004 electoral votes, and thus ensuring our win even if we don’t pick off a single blue State.

One thing to keep in mind is what happens when things get competitive. Over the past few Presidential elections, California’s participation has been akin to Texas’ - a bit more than 50%, but nothing to write home about. Why? Because over the last few election cycles the outcome in Texas and California was known months in advance. Turning to Florida, we can see that in 2004 the participation 74%, and it was 70% in 2000. Its a battle, and that gets people out to vote…as it stands right now, we can expect Obama to win California, and to have somewhere around 55% of California’s voters show up to vote. If the election in California becomes competitive, it will turn on who will show up to make the voter total go up to 60, 65 or 70%. My bet would be that Democratic voter participation is higher than GOP voter participation in California, so any increase in voter participation would tend to favor the GOP.

From what I can tell, 2008 is the year to throw out the rule books - forget about which States are solid this or solid that…there are too many variables, and the election could end up won by whichever candidate is most willing to think outside the electoral box.

Gay Marriage Battle Heats up in California

And one does wonder what effect this may have on Presidential voting in November:

ProtectMarriage.com, the campaign favoring Proposition 8, the California initiative that would ban same-sex marriage, on Tuesday announced the launch of the official grassroots effort dedicated to supporting the campaign. The organization Catholics for ProtectMarriage.com is led by the Knights of Columbus, the California Catholic Conference and Catholics for the Common Good.

Catholics for ProtectMarriage.com is chaired by Bill May, who is also chairman of Catholics for the Common Good.

“Our strong Catholic faith teaches us the importance of treating all of God’s children with love and respect, it also teaches us that marriage between a man and a woman is the foundation of the family - the first school of love, peace and justice,” May said in a statement. “The ruling by the California Supreme Court nullifying the legal definition of marriage in state law was a shock to Catholics and other citizens who are concerned about how this will affect their own children’s understanding of marriage.”

California Catholics reportedly played a large role in the passage of Proposition 22 in 2000, which defined marriage as being between one man and one woman. The proposition was approved by more than 60 percent of California voters.

I’ll ask you non-Catholics - especially you liberals out there - to rely on my word here when I say that Catholics in California will vote very heavily in favor of this amendment…and it is a complete question of whether a hispanic Catholic in California will pull the Obama or McCain lever after pulling the lever in favor of traditional marriage? Could split their ticket, as it were, or could decide that while they are voting for preserving marriage they might as well vote in favor of the guy who also wants to preserve marriage, John McCain.

There is a lot up in the air here in 2008, not least being the question as to whether or not “values” will rate as high in 2008 as they did in 2004. The more they do so, the better for McCain - because the GOP owns traditional morality in much the same way Democrats own defeat in Iraq. Both sides have tied themselves too tightly to their positions to triangulate their way out of them - and I think that a least a portion of our 2006 defeat stemmed from the number of GOPers who ran afoul of law and/or morality in direct contravention of established GOP practice. But what worked against us in 2006 can work for us in 2008 - with the Democrats suffering the series of sexual political corruption scandals and a Presidential candidate pledged to very liberal social policies opposed to a GOPer pledged to a vigorous defense of morality in the public square.
