Obama Snubs Public Education

Wow… despite calls for the Obamas to demonstrate their faith in the public school system, they have chosen to put their daughters in an elite private academy.

After a school search that set off weeks of frenzied speculation among parents here, President-elect Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, announced Friday that their two daughters would attend Sidwell Friends School, the prestigious academy that has educated generations of this city’s elite.

Apparently public schools were never even considered.

The Obama family had considered two other private institutions, Georgetown Day School and Maret School, for their girls, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7.

But Sidwell has long been described by some as the Harvard of Washington’s private schools. Its tuition runs as high as $29,442 a year.

“A number of great schools were considered,” said Katie McCormick Lelyveld, a spokeswoman for Mrs. Obama. “In the end, the Obamas selected the school that was the best fit for what their daughters need right now.”

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty of Washington strongly lobbied the Obamas to consider a public school, but that was apparently never an option.

The Obama girls currently attend private school, the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where annual tuition runs as high as $21,480, and the family did not tour any public schools on their recent visits.

Not good enough for the Obamas… but good enough for everyone else…

Bush Lifts Ban on Offshore Drilling…

…but will Congress take the next step to lower gas prices?

President George W. Bush said today he’s lifting a presidential ban on drilling for oil and natural gas on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf, setting up a showdown with Congress over a separate ban it put in place in the 1980s.

“Today I’ve taken every step within my power to allow offshore exploration of the OCS,” Bush said in a statement at the White House. “This means the only thing standing between the American people and these vast oil resources is action by the U.S. Congress.”

Democratic leaders in both houses of Congress rejected the president’s call, saying the move to end the moratorium would have no effect on prices and better options are available.

The Democrats once again reveal their stupidity and their hypocrisy. Steny Hoyer, who has come out opposing Bush’s actions today, said the following last week:

Now, of course, bringing new resources to market might have, hopefully will have, and we want them to have a reduction in prices.

Why do Democrats want gas prices to stay high? They haven’t proposed anything to address the energy problems we’re facing… All they know how to do is blame Bush for want to do something to lower gas prices.

The Democrats’ Smear Machine Gearing Up

Listening to Hillary and Obama on the campaign, there have been plenty of debate over who will be ready in the general election campaign to not only face McCain, but to handle everything “the Republican throw at them.” They act all high and mighty, claiming to care about the issues and not attacks against their opponents. Well, according to this story from The Hill, it appears the Democrats are much interested in digging up dirt for ammunition than they are in debating the issues.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) filed a number of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests with Cabinet-level agencies and inter-agency departments looking for opposition research to use against presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.).

In early February, there was a sharp uptick in the number of FOIA requests from the DNC with McCain as a specific target. February was about the same time McCain emerged as the front-runner and likely nominee.

A review of FOIA requests and independent confirmations obtained by The Hill turned up requests from the DNC at at least three agencies – the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Department of the Interior (DOI), the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and the Commerce Department.

According to one filing, Alicia McClintock, a DNC operative, wrote DOI asking for “any and all records of communication (including but not limited to letters, written requests, reports, telephone records, electronic communication) between your agency and John McCain or his offices/staff from 1999 to present during which period he has been a United States Senator.”

Despite their posturing, it is obvious the Democrats have a win-at-all-costs attitude about elections, and smearing their opponents is undoubtedly the biggest and most important part of their game plan. In public, they’ll say that the voters don’t fall for such attacks, but behind closed doors they work hard to engineer the worst of the worst attacks against anyone who stands in their way.

Count Every Vote?

From the party that nearly coined the mantra, “COUNT EVERY VOTE!” back in the 2000 elections, comes a message to Democrat voters in Michigan and Florida:

Pound sand.

On Wednesday, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, a Democrat, and Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, a Republican, released a joint statement, urging the national parties to “seat our delegates.”

“The right to vote is at the very foundation of our democracy,” the governors said. Given the record turnout in this primary season, “it is reprehensible that anyone would seek to silence the voices of 5,163,271 Americans. It is intolerable that the national political parties have denied the citizens of Michigan and Florida their votes and voices at their respective national conventions,” Granholm and Crist said.

No

The Democratic National Committee sent a pointed message to Florida and Michigan on Wednesday:

“We’re glad to hear that the Governors of Michigan and Florida are willing to lend their weight to help resolve this issue,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said in a news release.
“As we’ve said all along, we strongly encourage the Michigan and Florida state parties to follow the rules, so today’s public overtures are good news.”

But the answer is no, Dean continued: “The Democratic Nominee will be determined in accordance with party rules, and out of respect for the presidential campaigns and the states that did not violate party rules, we are not going to change the rules in the middle of the game.”

So the Democrats have in effect disenfranchised the vote of laid-off auto workers in Detroit, not to mention senior citizens and Latinos in Florida.

How magnanimous of the DNC.

But one must remember, disenfranchisement of the voters is nothing new in the liberal Democrat playbook. Remember,

Disenfranchising the Military

Gore talks of “unity.” But now we learn the Clinton-Gore administration didn’t want any soldiers to vote on base.

Basking in his Florida Supreme Court victory last night, Al Gore waxed high-minded. “Both Gov. Bush and I should urge all our supporters to refrain from any comments . . . that could make it harder for us to come together as one nation when the process is completed,” he declared in a speech at his residence, delivered just in time for the 11 o’clock news on the East Coast.

But what about the actions of Mr. Gore’s supporters? Down in Florida, in a concerted effort to trim George W. Bush’s margin of victory, they challenged a great many overseas absentee ballots, many of which come from military members. County canvassers disqualified a total of 1,527 ballots from overseas, according to an Associated Press report–more than 40% of the total. What could be more divisive than disfranchising Americans who are risking their lives to defend their country?

For decades now, the DNC and the ilk of their leadership have loved to masquerade as a voice for “the common man;” but the dirty little secret remains– there is a clear pattern of and a marked willingness to throw the common man under the bus when it suits their agenda. From the many Democrats who refused to vote for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (a much-higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats voted for the measure), to the “bimbo eruption patrols” during the Clinton administration that denied civil rights and due process to Paula Jones, Kathleen Willey and Juanita Broderick; to their willingness to trample on personal property rights and parental rights to push an agenda or further a special interest, the Democrats have proven time and time again that they care for the common man to much the same degree that Ted Bundy cared about his dates.

Count. Every. Vote.

Oh Really?

In reality, the DNC’s decision to disenfranchise rank-and-file voters in Michigan and Florida, just to smite the leadership of their respective state parties, was a tactical error from day one. As a result, the DNC and their respective endorsed candidates have left themselves wide open for a beating by Republicans just as sure as if Howard Dean stepped in the ring, handcuffed and blindfolded, against Mike Tyson.

Fish in a barrel, my friends. Fish in a barrel.

Attacking By Attacking The Attacks

Man, it is so amusing to watch Democrats pretend like they are above negative campaigning and attacks (with the exception of attacking Bush or Republicans, of course) and yet, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have both launched sites chronicling attacks made against them by the other. There’s Obama’s Hillary Attacks site and there’s Hillary’s Attack Timeline site.

It’s nice to see that Democrats are above attacks and negative campaigning.

Reid To Effectively Shutdown FEC?

Senate Democrats, lead by Harry Reid, are trying to strong-arm President Bush by refusing to clear a slate of appointees to the Federal Election Commission.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) just announced that the Senate will not clear four new appointees for the Federal Election Commission, meaning the panel that acts as a watchdog on political campaigns cannot function during the critical election-year period.

Reid is blaming the White House for refusing to withdraw to allow a majority vote on the nomination of Hans von Spakovsky for a seat on the commission. Republicans want von Spakovsky approved as part of a slate of four FEC nominees or they will refuse to consider any of the nominees.

Von Spakovsky was recess appointed by President Bush to the FEC, but his term expires at the end of the year. Democrats have refused to allow his nomination to move forward, arguing that his actions while at the Justice Department disqualified him for the post. Bush, though has not backed down, and the matter has been at an impasse for the last four months.

Now, with the Senate moving toward adjournment until mid-January, Reid signalled that Democrats will not move any FEC nominations if they include von Spakovsky, meaning the commission will only have two of its required six members. Reid said he offered the GOP a straight majority vote on all the FEC nominees, including von Spakovsky, but the White House refused to accept that offer.

How convenient that the FEC could be effectively shutdown during a presidential election year. Is this merely a case of Democrats trying to flex their muscles and appease their extreme liberal base, or is it also a way to protect Democrat candidates in an election year?

Funny isn’t it, just the other day Harry Reid was complaining about Republican obstruction

Harry Reid: Al Qaeda Is Winning

Sometime I wonder if Harry Reid has been auditioning for the part of Al Qaeda’s spokesman:

Tired of Republican crowing about winning on Iraq funding, the budget battle and the energy bill, Reid (D-Nev.) shot back on Tuesday afternoon.

“We hear a lot of Republicans boasting … because of their unprecedented obstruction,” Reid said.

Indeed, Republicans have gotten their way in the battle over spending, have forced Democrats to jettison rollbacks of tax breaks for oil companies, and have beaten back attempts to pay for expanded children’s health care programs with a tobacco tax increase. Even though they’re in the minority, the GOP, backed by President Bush, has used the filibuster to block Democratic priorities over and over this fall.

“Who’s winning?” Reid asked a group of reporters. “Big Oil, Big Tobacco. … Al Qaeda has regrouped and is able to fight a civil war in Iraq. … The American people are losing.”

Sounds like Harry Reid is saying Al Qaeda is winning. Of course, his comments completely contrast the assessments of generals on the ground and even some of Reid’s fellow Democrats, including Jack Murtha, who have admitted that the surge is working and significant progress is being made in Iraq.

I also can’t let this go without noting just how ridiculous Harry Reid sounds when he complains about Republican “obstruction.” Harry Reid lead his fellow Democrats in Senate in blocking many of President Bush’s judicial nominees. He even threatened Bush with a potential filibuster if he did not nominate a “consensus” judge to replace Justice O’Connor following the withdrawal of Harriet Miers. The fact is, when Democrats were in the minority, they supported all sorts of obstruction, with so many of Bush’s highly qualified nominees never getting the vote the deserved. John Bolton was never given a vote when he was nominated to be ambassador to the U.N., even after his recess appointment expired, and his performance was praised by many, Democrats stood firm in their baseless, partisan obstruction.

And Democrats have no right to blame Republicans for the majority’s incompetence. As the majority party, Republicans were able to pass tax cuts and the partial birth abortion ban, (just to name a few) despite the minority party’s rabid opposition to them. The Republicans could do this because they had leadership and the support of the American people on their side.

Lying In The Bed They Made

It’s really amusing to see Democrats moan and groan over “Republican efforts to block legislation.”

When Democrats were in the minority, blocking nominations and legislation, they called it standing up for the rights of the minority party, and cited the Founding Fathers in an attempt to justify their own behavior.

If they’re hot and bothered now, just wait until the next time there’s a Democrat president with a Democrat majority in the Senate (hopefully it won’t ever happen, but hypothetically speaking) and the Democrats are unable to vote on judicial nominations because they can’t break a filibuster. Will Democrats whine like little children, or will they urge their Democrat president to nominate moderate “consensus” nominees?
