Humanae Vitae at 40

This would be, of course, Pope Paul VI’s encyclical, published on July 25th, 1968. Even for Catholics, this is the most misunderstood, misinterpreted and denigrated encyclical of modern times. It is also, as it turns out, one of the most important, and one which daily proves itself prescient about what we now call the “culture of death” would lead to. In dealing boldy with matters of contraception, abortion and sex in general, Paul VI entered into a hornet’s nest during the so-called “sexual revolution” - a time when a few men, joined by a few rather foolish women, actually convinced most people that its ok for a woman to just have sex with any guy coming down the pike, as there is contraception and abortion to remedy any ill effects. The sexual catastrophe we see around us - massive illegitimacy, increased poverty and crime and, of course, the absolute horror of millions upon millions of murdered unborn children - is the result of that sexual revolution, and all of it would have been averted had people just paid heed to Paul VI.

Responsible men can become more deeply convinced of the truth of the doctrine laid down by the Church on this issue if they reflect on the consequences of methods and plans for artificial birth control. Let them first consider how easily this course of action could open wide the way for marital infidelity and a general lowering of moral standards. Not much experience is needed to be fully aware of human weakness and to understand that human beings—and especially the young, who are so exposed to temptation—need incentives to keep the moral law, and it is an evil thing to make it easy for them to break that law. Another effect that gives cause for alarm is that a man who grows accustomed to the use of contraceptive methods may forget the reverence due to a woman, and, disregarding her physical and emotional equilibrium, reduce her to being a mere instrument for the satisfaction of his own desires, no longer considering her as his partner whom he should surround with care and affection.

Finally, careful consideration should be given to the danger of this power passing into the hands of those public authorities who care little for the precepts of the moral law. Who will blame a government which in its attempt to resolve the problems affecting an entire country resorts to the same measures as are regarded as lawful by married people in the solution of a particular family difficulty? Who will prevent public authorities from favoring those contraceptive methods which they consider more effective? Should they regard this as necessary, they may even impose their use on everyone. It could well happen, therefore, that when people, either individually or in family or social life, experience the inherent difficulties of the divine law and are determined to avoid them, they may give into the hands of public authorities the power to intervene in the most personal and intimate responsibility of husband and wife…

…We take this opportunity to address those who are engaged in education and all those whose right and duty it is to provide for the common good of human society. We would call their attention to the need to create an atmosphere favorable to the growth of chastity so that true liberty may prevail over license and the norms of the moral law may be fully safeguarded.

Everything therefore in the modern means of social communication which arouses men’s baser passions and encourages low moral standards, as well as every obscenity in the written word and every form of indecency on the stage and screen, should be condemned publicly and unanimously by all those who have at heart the advance of civilization and the safeguarding of the outstanding values of the human spirit. It is quite absurd to defend this kind of depravity in the name of art or culture (25) or by pleading the liberty which may be allowed in this field by the public authorities…

…And now We wish to speak to rulers of nations. To you most of all is committed the responsibility of safeguarding the common good. You can contribute so much to the preservation of morals. We beg of you, never allow the morals of your peoples to be undermined. The family is the primary unit in the state; do not tolerate any legislation which would introduce into the family those practices which are opposed to the natural law of God. For there are other ways by which a government can and should solve the population problem—that is to say by enacting laws which will assist families and by educating the people wisely so that the moral law and the freedom of the citizens are both safeguarded.

There is very much more in it, and I do recommend that anyone with a genuine love of reason to take the time to go through it.

When Paul VI spoke of the evils which will come of making violations of moral laws easy amongst the young, he hit the target dead center. These days, we pass out condoms to kids and dare to say they are “protected” - what would at one time have gotten an adult a jail sentence has been translated into a supposedly decent act! For the love of God, good people, we’re treating children as if they were a legtimate part of extramarital sexual activity! I know we had the terrible scandal in the Church on this very issue - but does anyone think that only some failed priests started viewing children as legitimate sexual prey? How can we say we want to protect our children when we bombard them with direct and indirect appeals to loose the bonds of morality and throw their sexual lives on to the indiscriminate pile of depraved popular culture?

Also well taken to heart must be Paul VI’s assertion that a loosening of sexual bonds via contraception and abortion would lead more and more men to view women as mere objects of sexual gratification. We speak these days of men who won’t commit - why on earth should they? They are getting all the sex they can handle without having to commit to more than dinner and a movie (if even that much). I’m sure that most of us have known or at least known of a man who has several children by several different women - is this respecting women? Is this what sexual liberation was supposed to do? Turn a woman into a sperm bank for a roving man? How is all of this we see in 2008 superior to the old sexual morality we were eagerly casting aside as Paul VI wrote his encyclical?

Also, don’t think for a moment that I am standing on high as some pure man - heck no! I jumped into the sexual revolution feet first as soon as I got the opportunity. I have learned, now, that the only proper place for sex is between a man and a woman who have committed to completely self-donate one to the other. Only by such an act - such a promise - is sex liberated from the animal and partakes of the divine, and becomes far more than just the sex act. It is a terrible thing we’ve done in breaking down the family and instructing our children to be as sexual as possible as soon as possible - millions, literally, are dead because of this…and not just the aborted children. All of those who have died of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases must also be laid at the door of the sexual revolution. Millions of families have been destroyed, almost invariably to the severe detriment of the mothers and children. Never in human history - even during the most depraved periods of the Roman Empire - has a society so diligently sought out the means of its own destruction.

It is time to become true progressives here - understanding that if you’ve taken a wrong turning, the only way to progress is to turn back to where you first went wrong. We can’t add to the sexual revolution and get something good - it was wrong from the start, and we have to ditch the whole thing. Only by so doing will women find that liberation the sexual liberators promised…only by so doing will we recall men to their duty as husbands and fathers. Only by so doing will we rescue the family and thus save our civilization.

California Court: Parents May be Harmful to Children

Read it and weep, fellow Americans:

Los Angeles, Mar 7, 2008 (CNA).- A California court decision restricting two parents’ ability to homeschool their children could subject all California parents to criminal penalties for homeschooling, WorldNetDaily reports.

Allegations of abuse had been brought against Phillip and Mary Long of Los Angeles, who disciplined their homeschooled children with spankings. After the case was closed by the court, the two attorneys appointed to represent the Longs’ two youngest children filed a special appeal challenging the Longs’ right to continue homeschooling their children.

The Second Appellate Court in Los Angeles granted the attorneys’ appeal. Justice H. Walt Croskey, whose opinion was joined by two other judges, declared, “Parents who fail to [comply with school enrollment laws] may be subject to a criminal complaint against them, found guilty of an infraction and subject to imposition of fines or an order to complete a parent education and counseling program.”

The Long family’s children were enrolled in Sunland Christian School, a private homeschooling program. Judge Croskey, without hearing arguments from the school, said this was a “ruse of enrolling [children] in a private school and then letting them stay home and be taught by a non-credentialed parent.”

The appellate court confirmed a lower court’s finding that “keeping the children at home deprived them of situations where (1) they could interact with people outside the family, (2) there are people who could provide help if something is amiss in the children’s lives, and (3) they could develop emotionally in a broader world than the parents’ ‘cloistered’ setting.”

Did you catch that? The worry from the judge is that the parents might be a baleful influence on their children and thus only a properly credentialled representative of the government’s education monopoly can ensure what is best for the children. This is just the latest in a long line of attempts by the left - going back more than 200 years - to remove children from parental control and have the State raise them to be what the State wishes them to be.

This nauseating ruling must be overturned - it is the family which is the foundation of society, not government-run indoctrination centers…err, I mean “public schools”. The damned schools can’t even teach kids to read and write at times, yet a group of judges holds public schools to be superior in education quality to parents who actually love their children! Enough is enough - it is time we smack down this sort of nonsense and let the left know that we won’t allow them to destroy us.

UPDATE: Governor Schwarzenegger steps up to the plate:

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger denounced a state appeals court ruling that severely restricts homeschooling and promised Friday to change the law if necessary to guarantee that parents are able to educate their children at home.

“Every California child deserves a quality education, and parents should have the right to decide what’s best for their children,” Schwarzenegger said in response to the ruling, which said children educated at home must be taught by a credentialed teacher.

“Parents should not be penalized for acting in the best interests of their children’s education,” Schwarzenegger said. “This outrageous ruling must be overturned by the courts, and if the courts don’t protect parents’ rights then, as elected officials, we will.”

A Problem in the Democratic Coalition

Without a large Hispanic vote, Democrats don’t have a chance of winning the White House - just won’t win the required 270 electoral votes unless there’s a good turn out, and a strong majority of that turn out voting Democrat. So, Democrats will make stroking Hispanic voters a prime focus of their fall effort…but there are some rather strong differences between a lot of Hispanics and some core Democratic principles:

Washington DC, Feb 14, 2008 (CNA).- Key Latino leaders will rally at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Denver later this year in support of a national marriage amendment and marriage-friendly policy.

The event, organized by the Alliance for Marriage, will take place near the Colorado Convention Center where the DNC will hold its meeting. The Alliance for Marriage will also conduct a public relations campaign, including paid advertisements, to publicize the issue and the event.

Organizers claim that the Colorado political landscape has been transformed from “the very heart of America’s pro-marriage and pro-family movement” into a “home front for radical activists.” As an example of this upheaval the Latino leaders singled out Colorado billionaire and former software magnate Tim Gill, who has funded homosexual activist causes.

The Alliance for Marriage plans to mobilize the Hispanic vote to bring about renewal “within both national political parties, but especially the Democrat party”. Citing the influence of millionaire activists, the organizers see Latino support for the family as the “only chance of pushing back the forces of Gill and others.”

“For far too long the votes of Latinos have been taken for granted,” said Rev. Sam Rodriguez, Jr., President of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference and Advisory Board Member of the Alliance for Marriage Foundation. “As our numbers grow, our influence is growing, and it is time for leaders of both parties to put protecting marriage and strong family values at the center of their agenda. Candidates like to tout ‘family values’ on the stump, but then toss our values aside when they get to Washington. We’re not going to tolerate that any more.”

Now, truth be told, in the immigration/border security issue there is a large opening for Democrats to move in and scoop up a high percentage of Latino voters - but in John McCain, the GOP has at least a partial antidote to that. Meanwhile, the Democrats also have a lot of appeal in areas of social spending for Hispanics as a lot of them are immigrants or first or second generation Americans who tend to be poorer than the American average and thus willing to lend an ear (and a vote) to those who pledge large sums to improve the day to day lives of the less wealthy. There’s not much the GOP can do about that - we’re not about to out-pander the Democrats on social spending, and we’ll just have to make the very correct argument that while social spending can be useful, it can also be destructive to family - and Latinos tend to have very strong families; much stronger than the American average. Family is important, and Hispanic voters are concerned about threats to this very important thing.

The problem for Democrats will be how to try and square this circle - especially in the face of a GOP which will easily and naturally assure Hispanic voters that we hear their concerns for family loud and clear and we are determined to keep marriage as an institution between one man and one woman. Democrats don’t dare do this, as it would splinter various parts of their coalition - so, they will try to weave and dodge. But I don’t think they’ll be able to do it - eventually, they’ll have to come out and say what they believe and there will lie the GOP’s opening to garner a large Hispanic vote.

An interesting election this will be, that is for sure.

A Battle Over Child Welfare Funding

Going on out here in Nevada - at issue: do we just keep spending as if revenues were rising fast as they were before the housing bust, or do we find out if there’s any way to cut some fat out of the budget without harming child services?

Details over at Battle Born Politics.
