“Cold Cash” Jefferson Defeated!

It’s about time.

Political newcomer Anh “Joseph” Cao, a Republican, has beaten nine-term incumbent William Jefferson, a Democrat, in the 2nd Congressional District, according to the Associated Press.

With 79 percent of the district’s 492 precincts reporting, Cao, a Venetian Isles attorney who has enjoyed strong backing from local and national GOP organizations, is leading 53 percent to 43 percent over Jefferson. Green Party candidate Malik Rahim has 3 percent, while Libertarian Gregory Kahn is trailing with less than 1 percent.

The district, which was drawn to give African Americans an electoral advantage, covers most of New Orleans, most of Jefferson Parish’s West Bank and parts of south Kenner. About two-thirds of the district’s voters are registered as Democrats.

It is a good day when a corrupt Democrat finally gets defeated… one down… a lot more to go.
Next up… trial and conviction.

I think a celebratory glass of Cabernet Sauvignon is in order.

UPDATE: How sweet it is.

UPDATE, by Mark Noonan: Also noted is that the Democrats seem to have lost the other runoff House election in Louisiana. The reason does appear to be lower-than-necessary black turnout - one wonders that now there’s a black man to be in the White House will black turnout drop off heavily for all the special and off-year elections? For the 2010 mid-terms? The test will be in next year’s Virginia governors race.

William “Cold Cash” Jefferson to Run for Re-Election

So says Roll Call - and while he is the target of a bribery investigation and the Feds found a $90,000.00 bribe stashed in his ‘fridge, I’ll bet dollars to donuts he wins in a walkover…because his district is safely Democratic and the only thing which will make Democrats get rid of a corrupt person is if that person risks the loss of a seat.

The real “culture of corruption” in DC - it always had a “D” after it’s name.

More Bribery Charges To Be Filed Against Jefferson…

More trouble for indicted congressman William Jefferson

Prosecutors have accused Representative William J. Jefferson, Democrat of Louisiana, of soliciting bribes in two suspected schemes that are separate from the bribery charges he already faces, according to a published report.

Prosecutors said no new charges would be filed because of the accusations revealed in the document, filed late Friday in Federal District Court in Alexandria and obtained by The Washington Post. But prosecutors planned to use the latest accusations during Mr. Jefferson’s trial as evidence of a pattern of wrongdoing.

The government says that in 2002, Mr. Jefferson asked a lobbyist for an American oil services company for payments of $10,000 a month for a family member. In exchange, Mr. Jefferson said he would help the company promote business in Africa. The lobbyist turned down the request, according to the document.

Mr. Jefferson later made a deal to urge the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to do business with an American rocket launching services and technology company, according to the filing. The company is accused of agreeing to pay Mr. Jefferson’s family business and a relative in exchange for his help.

A spokeswoman for Mr. Jefferson declined to comment.

And to think it wasn’t that long ago that Nancy Pelosi tried to put him on the Homeland Security Committee.
