Give Democracy a Chance

It occurred to me a little earlier today that there never was a mass, popular movement to created the United States Federal Reserve.  There also wasn’t any such thing to legalize abortion.  Or to create the Environmental Protection Agency  Doesn’t seem to have been many mobs rioting in favor of a Department of Education.  Don’t seem to remember us voting on a ban on smoking in airplanes.  You get the picture – quite a lot of things we take for granted as part of our political structure did not spring from a popular movement…they were imposed on us.  To be sure, some of them were voted on in Congress, but its not like Congressmen running in the 1912 election actually campaigned on establishing the Federal Reserve and while Nixon said a lot of things to get elected in 1968, I don’t think “I promise to create a bureaucratic nightmare called the EPA” among his promises.

The point here is that for an allegedly democratic republic, we sure don’t have a lot of democracy these days.  Things are proposed, deals are made behind closed doors and things which are allegedly laws ooze out…only to be sliced and diced endlessly by judges and bureaucrats as well-heeled special interests make sure they are taken care of.  I want a bit more democracy – a bit more mob rule, as it were.

I’m telling you, I’m willing to put everything up for a vote – including the 1st and 2nd amendments.  Lets have a vote, people – let us see what the real will of the people is.  Marches and demonstrations and furious arguments across the fruited plains – and then we vote and see what we have.  At least we’ll all know we participated in what we’re living under – we’ll know that we, the people, took a hand in ruling our own destiny.  Of course, I’m very willing to do this because I suspect that my point of view would come out on top in a fair vote 9 out of 10 times.

What say you, fellow Americans?  Anyone out there willing to actually have the people decide?

Sounds like a plan, Mark. I love the idea. The question is, would it help the many millions of people that have been indoctrinated by the public school system see where their teaching, marinated with leftist dogma was the wrong teaching? If not, what will it take for these people to see the err of their way of thinking? Another bloody revolution? Very scary times we’re living in. We never know when we’ll be the next victim of a government planned/coordinated attack. Not to mention the attacks on our freedoms–just recently the U.S. Army came out with a statement saying, “Evangelicals are the most dangerous members of society,” and the government is going to Court martial soldiers who share their faith with other soldiers, another being they’ve issued a statement saying that “scripture verses on military rifle scopes is “unconstitutional/illegal.”” One thing at a time, and pretty soon, we won’t have any freedom. Strangely enough, it seems the public is unaware or impervious to the poison that is making its way into every area of our lives. It seems even that sports doesn’t go unaffected, they’ve replaced Tim Tebow (a Christian) with an atheist homosexual.

We the people need to form a diplomatic treaty with our government and back it up with force. Or else there ain’t gonna be anymore “United States of America” but another country ruled by a dictator with millions being subjugated and murdered.

    • M. Noonan May 2, 2013 / 11:59 pm

Just another reason to have a vote – there is no mass, popular movement to curtail expression of the Christian faith in the military. No one is frightened of it – except for radical anti-Christians who want a US military which is de-Christianized. So, let’s vote – I’m certain we’ll win, on this and scores of other issues.

      • Jeremiah May 3, 2013 / 1:10 am

I’m all in, Mark. let’s do it. It sounds really good, and perhaps we can get the silent majority on board.

      • sarahbloch May 4, 2013 / 6:40 am

Mark proselytizing is not the job of the United States military. i know how you feel about the great change that religion made in you but that’s you. It isn’t the job of the United States military to spread Christianity, Judaism Islam or any other religion. Freedom of religion doesn’t mean freedom to spread a religion chosen above all others. And you won’;t win that’s like saying you’ll beat Death in the end. Silly.

      • M. Noonan May 4, 2013 / 2:18 pm

No on in the military – as a military member – is spreading Christianity. They are just freely exercising their religion. I realize that anti-religious zealots like yourself are uninterested in preserving freedom – but a lot of other people are. And, so, let’s have a vote – we’ll find out how the American people feel about this and all of us will abide by the result.

      • Bob1 May 4, 2013 / 5:39 pm

Mark, I don’t see any evidence that a “popular” vote on any “Christian” or other “moral” issue in this secular and divided nation would pass in any federal election, and I certainly don’t see any evidence that “we’ll win” in Congress on any such issues. I don’t think that there is any “we” in our political system any longer; it is all ruled by groups that seek and have secured what is beneficial for “me”, and our group of “mes” is a small unpopular minority in this country.

      • M. Noonan May 4, 2013 / 10:19 pm

Then let’s have a vote and find out.

That’s a good idea, Canadian, but the number of men is not large enough…we need a third of the nation to come march around Washington D.C. I’d like to see a mass movement, and lots of rallying cries around that trumps all the news.

We are still a Republic and only our ideals are democratic… Democracies always end up corrupted by those at the top of the hill.

True, but our Republic is also completely corrupted – I say a bit of Democracy, ie revolution, is what is needed to redress the balance.

  5. dbschmidt May 3, 2013 / 9:48 am

Be very careful what you “wish” for. There is a very solid reason the founding fathers ruled out a democracy. When the wolves (large urban centers) and outvote the lambs (rural areas & the burbs)–we will all know what is on the menu for dinner (lamb). New York state and/or California are perfect examples.

You are putting too much trust into a system that cannot be trusted. From a previous post and other examples–the government is supposed to destroy all records of persons passing the instant background check for the purchase of firearms but even that does not seem to be the case.

CA Governor Signs Law Allowing Confiscation of Firearms

Registration databases of legal gun owners is the first step to confiscation. Ask Great Britain, among others, but not least Californians. Should we make sure felons and the criminally mentally ill do not have weapons–sure; but from the previous listing of NY gun owners in the daily rags to “Moonbeam’s round-up”–legal gun owners should not be on a database or list anywhere and in particular in the hands of an untrustworthy government.

Since California keeps a database of gun owners, they know where every gun is–or where it’s supposed to be–and they’ll use that database to locate them.

Guess they never got the “shall not be infringed.” memo. BTW, just in case anyone is monitoring this–I lost all of mine during that tragic Mariana Trench boating experience. I swear, just as Obama and his administration does. Plus, it was soooo long ago–nearly 7.5 months and all.

    • M. Noonan May 3, 2013 / 10:18 am

Ah, but where was the mass movement in California for that gun law? Did anyone see millions of Californians marching in the streets demanding it? Ditto with things like Bloomberg’s soda ban. I say, let’s have a vote of the people – call a Constitutional convention, if you like, but we must find out what the people really want.

      • dbschmidt May 3, 2013 / 10:45 am

The “mass movement” was at the voting booth that constantly reelections idiots like Pelosi, Moonbeam and Marion Berry among others.

I would love an actual Constitutional Convention to repeal a few of the poor choices made over the years but I am not sure of anything less. As Franklin once said “Make yourselves sheep and the wolves will eat you.”

      • Count d'Haricots (@Count_dHaricots) May 3, 2013 / 12:05 pm

If everything were put to popular vote then we would have the tyranny of the majority that Jefferson spoke of.

This is a Republic where we elect those who are better able to consider, debate and vote in the interest of the people by being focused on the issues.

We have a system of government that works; we like our system; if the system doesn’t work we change the people running the system, not the system.

      • M. Noonan May 3, 2013 / 1:11 pm

I see the point, guys, but our constitutional republic is in tatters and shreds right now – we’re barely maintaining a right to bear arms…we’ve already fundamentally lost our property rights and we’re losing our right to the free exercise of religion. I know its a bit of a desperate expedient, but I’d like to see if my fellow Americans are at all willing to vote for freedom…if they aren’t, then no amount of argument on our side will convince them to restore the constitution.

      • dbschmidt May 3, 2013 / 9:46 pm

No Casper; however, there should have been no list or database to start with under current Federal laws. That was my point.

      • 02casper May 3, 2013 / 9:55 pm

If there is no list or database, there is no way of stopping felons and mentally ill people from buying guns especially since there are no background checks outside of guns purchased at stores.

      • dbschmidt May 3, 2013 / 10:59 pm

        In your case I would have to venture that ignorance is bliss. Here is a snippet from ;

The National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, is all about saving lives and protecting people from harm—by not letting guns and explosives fall into the wrong hands. It also ensures the timely transfer of firearms to eligible gun buyers.

It has been in effect since I purchased my first handgun in 1978 (even though it took 3 days then which one had to wait to receive the firearm) and has been effective. Could be better but the the government will not add mental health records to it. Not yet anyway. If you successfully pass the NCIS–the records are supposed to be destroyed–if you fail, you are supposed to be investigated and possibly charged. Guess the government is doing neither.

I am getting tired of repeating myself but one more time. All internet sales of firearms of any sort are required to be sent to a Class III firearms dealer who has to do the NCIS check before releasing the weapon to any individual. That also includes the vast majority (99.7%) of firearms sales at gun shows. Could be because they are Class III firearms dealers. There are a few individuals that sell (less than 3 firearms) that do not fall under that provision; however, in 1995 the NRA (that evil gun group) formally requested that the Federal BATFE set up a booth at all gun shows so that loophole could be closed and were refused.

Hope this somehow helps your understanding of current gun sale laws.

      • dbschmidt May 3, 2013 / 11:38 pm

        Not just for Casper,

“I want to point out to you three facts that President Obama consistently refuses to address:”

“Fact No. 1 – The Obama administration has not made it a priority to prosecute felons and fugitives who attempt to illegally purchase guns. In the year 2010 over 48,000 felons and fugitives tried to illegally buy guns. Out of that 48,000, the Obama Justice Department prosecuted fourty-four. Fourty-four out of 48,000. That’s just not acceptable.”

“Fact No. 2 – Under President Obama gun crime prosecution – prosecuting those use guns in the commission of a crime, has decreased 30 percent. And you know, the President Obama’s hometown of Chicago, which is ravaged by violent crime ranks dead last in prosecuting gun crime.”

“Fact No 3 – President Obama cut over $300M in funding from school safety…”

        Ted Cruz NRA Speech 2013
This is part of the speech given by Sen. Ted Cruz to the 2013 NRA-ILA gathering. Can you answer any of these questions he “asked” Pres. Obama? Do we need to get into the gun-running under his administration?

Obama has blamed the American people numerous times for gun violence in Mexico. In 2009, the President, Attorney General Eric Holder, and then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton repeatedly claimed that “90-percent” of guns recovered from cartel crime scenes were traced to the United States.

The “90-percent lie” was conclusively debunked by Obama’s own Department of Justice in sworn testimony before Congress, as an ATF official was forced to admit that just 8% of firearms recovered from the scenes of gun crimes in Mexico came from the United States.

Of the 8% of American “civilian” guns recovered at crime scenes, 302 murders of those murders were traced directly to guns smuggled to the Sinaloa cartel via Operation Fast and Furious, a weapons smuggling plot that transferred 2,500 guns to narco-terrorists that the Obama Administration wants to ban.

Via Operation Fast and Furious and up to nine other gun smuggling operations, the Obama Administration provided potentially tens of thousand of “civilian” guns to different cartels. Put bluntly, the Obama Administration is likely the greatest supplier of American “civilian” firearms to the Mexican cartels.

        from Bob Owens at

Explore for yourself–maybe I should add in something about Benghazi and how that lie is falling apart?

That second amendment thing is really getting in the way of peace!

“Most of the guns used to commit violence here in Mexico come from the United States,” President Obama said during a speech at Mexico’s Anthropology Museum. “I think many of you know that in America, our Constitution guarantees our individual right to bear arms. And as president, I swore an oath to uphold that right, and I always will. But at the same time, as I’ve said in the United States, I will continue to do everything in my power to pass common-sense reforms that keep guns out of the hands of criminals and dangerous people. That can save lives here in Mexico and back home in the United States. It’s the right thing to do,” Obama added.

I wonder if these means that Obama will come clean on Fast & Furious. After all, he is directly responsible for many of those guns ending up in Mexico. C’mon Mr. President, tell us about Fast & Furious – it would be the right thing to do.

    • percybeezer May 3, 2013 / 3:42 pm

In fact Derrick Hayes was not disqualified because he “gave praise to G-d but because he violated a rule that prohibits any form of post victory celebration close to the finish line that involves the raising of the hands. From KHOU:
Columbus ISD Superintendent Robert O’Connor said the team had won the race by seven yards. It was their fastest race of the year.
Though O’Connor cannot say why the student pointed, he says it was against the rules that govern high school sports. The rules state there can be no excessive act of celebration, which includes raising the hands.
“I don’t think that the situation was technically a terrible scenario as far as his action, but the action did violate the context of the rule,” Supt. O’Connor said.

Neocon1 the very article you cite gives evidence that the murder rate, which is still unacceptable, in the city of Chicago, is declining. What you fail to realize is that there are staggeringly more suicides and murder suicides that cause more deaths in the US every year. As of today there have been over 7,000 gun suicides in the United States.

We noted a thread of repetition in your post from the redeye chicago blog which mentions the race of the victims then you posted the next statistic about the race of perpetrators of homicide which would give any Rational Being the impression that you feel race is a motivator to violence. If this is the case what are your solutions to this problem as you see it?

    • neocon01 May 4, 2013 / 11:05 am

What solutions then can you offer to solve this problem?

Hey Neocon1 how come all those middle class, rural, people in Montana and Wyoming, living in states with virtually no black population couldn’t rely on religion and being so far removed from “inner city violence” that they had to kill themselves? Is being a white conservative lead to suicidal mental illness?

    • Amazona May 5, 2013 / 2:38 pm

Assure away. After all, who could be more credible than someone so filled with self-loathing that she has to not only invent a persona but invent one that is not human and not an individual but part of a hive? That is a rejection of self on so many levels, it would keep a shrink busy for quite some time sorting it all out.

Too funny, how the unbalanced mental state of one who has to deny her individuality, her humanity and her identity is presented as something quite darling, but the unbalanced mental state of those who exhibit other symptoms is blamed on their choice of tools with which they choose to express them.

How about looking at how many gun owners do NOT kill themselves, or anyone else?

sad sad day for Ubamas ameriKa…….

More than 200 Wisconsin teachers and school administrators traveled to Green Bay last week to attend CREATE Wisconsin’s 2013 state conference.
, to get a first-hand look at what the program, sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, is all about.

        State officials contend the CREATE program is nothing more than an effort to help teachers better understand and serve minority students. {snip}

Many of the presentations focused on how public schools supposedly promote “white culture” and “white privilege,” to the detriment to students of color. Presenters called on educators to recognize and acknowledge their white privilege and encourage their students to do the same. Only then, presenters argue, can all students truly receive a multicultural education.

The conference also focused on teaching race-based topics in the classroom and how to respond to student resistance when talking about white privilege. The goal seems to be to crush dissent, convince white kids that they need to feel guilty about themselves and the society they grew up in, and convince minority kids that current American social structures are hopelessly stacked against them.

        in the US……..

        * Homosexuals account for 3-4% of all gonorrhea cases, 60% of all syphilis cases, and 17% of all hospital admissions (other than for STDs) in the United States (5). They make up only 1-2% of the population

        * Homosexuals live unhealthy lifestyles, and have historically accounted for the bulk of syphilis, gonorrhea, Hepatitis B, the “gay bowel syndrome” (which attacks the intestinal tract), tuberculosis and cytomegalovirus (27)

        * 73% of psychiatrists say homosexuals are less happy than the average person, and of those psychiatrists, 70% say that the unhappiness is NOT due to social stigmatization (13)

        * 25-33% of homosexuals and lesbians are alcoholics (11)

        * Of homosexuals questioned in one study reports that 43% admit to 500 or more partners in a lifetime, 28% admit to 1000 or more in a lifetime, and of these people, 79% say that half of those partners are total strangers, and 70% of those sexual contacts are one night stands (or, as one homosexual admits in the film “The Castro”, one minute stands) (3). Also, it is a favorite past-time of many homosexuals to go to “cruisy areas” and have anonymous sex

        * 78% of homosexuals are affected by STDs (20)

        * Judge John Martaugh, chief magistrate of the New York City Criminal Court has said, “Homosexuals account for half the murders in large cities” (10)

        * Captain William Riddle of the Los Angeles Police says, “30,000 sexually abused children in Los Angeles were victims of homosexuals” (10)

        * 50% of suicides can be attributed to homosexuals (10)

There are times jeremiad when you need some raw emotion in government. What’s the opposite of emotion again?

      • Amazona May 5, 2013 / 10:21 am

There are many more times when the “raw emotion” that comprises most if not all of Leftist “political” orientation should be replaced by objective analysis and actual thinking.

You pride yourself on being part of what you foolishly think is “progressive” thought and action, constantly preening over your participation in what you seem to actually believe is a movement forward, while you are blind to the fact that you have been gulled into submitting to a political model that is not only fatally flawed but is REgressive and an effort to move backward into an always-failed political system.

The Left is brilliant at recognizing the roles of ego and delusion, and targeting those whose emotional needs override objective analytical thought. You are an ongoing example of this.

” Abraham Carpenter Jr., a farmer in Grady, Ark., has more insight into human nature than the average sociologist. “Anytime you are going to throw money up in the air,” he told The New York Times, “you are going to have people acting crazy.”

Carpenter is quoted in an astonishing 5,000-word Times expose on the federal government’s wildly profligate program to compensate minority and women farmers for alleged discrimination. The government rigged the game against itself and in favor of anyone claiming taxpayers’ dollars. It was like a gambling house that fixed its slot machines to always come up triple cherries (and pay out other people’s money).

The enormous scam was set in motion by a 1997 class-action lawsuit called Pigford v. Glickman, with black farmers alleging that the Department of Agriculture discriminated against them in allocating loans. The Government Accountability Office and the Agriculture Department found no evidence of ongoing discrimination, but black farmers had been treated unfairly in the past. This injustice became the predicate for officially sanctioned fraud amounting to reparations for non-white, non-male farmers.

The Clinton administration decided on a $1 billion settlement, “more a political decision than a litigation decision,” one lawyer told the Times. The presiding judge expanded the definition of claimants to include anyone who had “attempted to farm,” and no written complaint of discrimination was necessary. The judge wanted to set up a mechanism to provide “those class members with little or no documentary evidence with a virtually automatic cash payment of $50,000.”

He succeeded brilliantly. Staff from lawyers’ offices filled out forms for claimants at mass meetings. People filled out applications for their kids. Entire families filled out applications. Most applicants had never received any loans, making it impossible to check the record to verify their claims.

The Times examined 16 ZIP codes in Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and North Carolina, and found that “the number of successful claimants exceeded the total number of farms operated by people of any race in 1997, the year the lawsuit was filed. Those applicants received nearly $100 million.” In Little Rock, Ark., 10 members of one extended family reaped a cool half a million dollars.

Tens of thousands of applicants missed the 1999 deadline of the original suit. Their claims were probably even weaker than the original ones. But as a senator, Barack Obama supported paying the late applicants, and as president, he successfully sought another $1.15 billion for the purpose.

Other groups felt left out of the bonanza. Lawyers at the Justice Department thought that they were winning a court battle with Hispanic and female farmers. That didn’t matter. “Political appointees at the Justice and Agriculture Departments,” the Times writes, “engineered a stunning turnabout: They committed $1.33 billion to compensate not just the 91 plaintiffs but thousands of Hispanic and female farmers who had never claimed bias in court.”

The government settled for another $760 million with Native Americans, even though it appeared to have a strong case. Even with the lure of this cash, the government could only give away $300 million. Another $400 million will go to Native American nonprofits, if appropriate ones can be found. And $60 million to the plaintiffs’ lawyers for the service of helping fleece the U.S. government.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told the Times that the blowout means at his department “we celebrate diversity instead of discriminate against it.” Couldn’t he find a cheaper way to do it? The settlements altogether could cost more than $4.4 billion.

The Pigford case is like something out of a Tom Wolfe novel. It would be hard to invent a more damning fable of modern government. It is a tale of special-interest pleading and of the politicians who give in to it (at first, Barack Obama wanted to pander to rural blacks, then he needed to do catch-up pandering to Hispanics). It is a story of greedy lawyers and hapless bureaucrats. It is equally ludicrous and dismaying. Take a good long look, and then recoil.”

        alinsky/marxism 101

        Silence of the Conservative Lambs
        By Lloyd Marcus

I thought perhaps it would be wise to frame my words in such a way that the media could not distort and use them against me. You know, the old “you can catch more flies with honey” thing.

Well, the problem with that strategy is that the media seeks to destroy conservatives, especially black conservatives such as myself. Therefore, they will spin any- and everything I say into a negative to scare me into shutting up.

Whenever conservatives simply speak the truth, they are branded extremist by the mainstream media and advised by consultants to “moderate their tone.” Meanwhile, liberals/Democrats make the most outrageous over-the-top statements without a peep of criticism from the mainstream media or their party. Democrat VP Biden said, “They [Republicans] gon’ put y’all [blacks] back in chains.” Democrat Rep. Andre Carson said the Tea Party movement would “love” to see black Americans “hang from a tree.”

Democrat Alan Grayson said, “Republicans want you to die quickly.”

Democrat Rep. Maxine Waters said, “The Tea Party can go straight to hell.” Think about that, folks. Millions of Americans who oppose Obama ignoring the Constitution and cramming his socialist/progressive agenda down their throat have been told by a Democrat to go to hell.

Has anyone in the media accused Democrats of being mean-spirited? Has any Democrat denounced a fellow Democrat’s outrageous statements? No.

But conservatives/Republicans wrestle with each other to be first at the microphone to denounce the slightest faux pas by someone on our side. They kick fellow conservatives/Republicans to the curb, saying, How could so-and-so have said something so stupid? He’s done!
