SOTU Open Thread

I’ll be watching tonight: wouldn’t miss it for the world.

We’re going to need a lot of popcorn: the lady who is accusing the Virginia Lt Governor of sexual assault has retained Ford’s law firm. This will get more and more fun for a while, it would seem.

Meanwhile, Northam got $2 million in campaign funds from Planned Parenthood. He was very firmly bought.

We need to find out how much Planned Parenthood spent to buy Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) because she just blocked a bill which would have provided protection for children born alive after an abortion attempt. The abortion lobby has it’s requirement: once that kid is slated for death, death it must be.

Jim Geraghty points out that the VA GOP is in no rush to get Northam out – their State legislative elections are in November and the GOP would be totally ok with this albatross hanging around the Democrats’ neck at the time.

I have always avoided the SOTU address, finding it tedious and full of pomposity and posturing. But I watched tonight, and for the first time saw the charm and skill I keep hearing attributed to Donald Trump. He was masterful tonight, and controlled the evening.

Watching the sour faces of the Virginal Brigade in their white, with their scowls and pouts and surliness, erupting in the celebration encouraged by Trump as he congratulated them, and watching them join the USA USA chant was pretty amazing. He set up so many times when the Left was put in a very awkward position as refusing to applaud and even stand would have been so egregiously surly that he pretty much owned them.

He hit the important points politically—-African Americans and Jews—and struck a nice balance between genial collegiality and stern challenge. I loved, as in LOVED the reaction to his scathing commentary about socialism and his commitment to never let it gain ascendancy in the US.

I’d call it not just a home run but a grand slam. There was a lot more cheerfulness than I expected, with a lot of shared emotion, like the Happy Birthday song to the Holocaust survivor. I usually hate the whole calling on guest thing, but this was done so effectively that it was very powerful.

And it was fun to watch Chuckie McSmirk Smirk with that annoying smirk of his never leaving his face.

AOC and her little Girl Posse did not come across well at all. Not at all.

The Mrs thought the Virginal Brigade looked absurd. I don’t think they realized how bad it would look. And it was a great speech – I was very impressed. It had all you needed – bit of humor, bit of emotion, bit of policy. Democrats have no real answer for it…and it shows why, in spite of all, it’ll be hard to get Trump out of the White House. The President gets to command that sort of audience pretty much at will and anyone attacking always looks less by comparison.

I thought the antics of the new female Representatives illustrated the rather childish and primitive mentality of the New Left—the dependence on theatrics instead of substance. What, exactly, was all that white supposed to convey? Purity? That is so so unProgressive. Unity? NONE of them came across as mature competent women, but more like some silly schoolgirl club or clique where they all decided to wear the same color one day. I think there is going to be a lot of ridicule for that decision and I wonder who thought it up. (No, I really don’t. I am pretty sure it was the new “leader” of the freshman class of women.)

All it did was create a big white blotch of immobile people with scowling faces, clearly acting according to a script, while the rest of the room seemed pretty active. After a while I think they started to catch on that everyone else was standing up sometimes and their uniforms just pointed out how childish and surly they were. And that is exactly how they came across. Some shots of AOC made her look like a little girl who didn’t get a pony for her birthday. Or who forgot to take her Metamucil

Then they suddenly got all excited and giddy when the president said something nice about them and started jumping up and down and giggling and waving and high-fiving. I was actually a little embarrassed for them. Their first shot at the limelight as members of Congress, and they blew it, and the only thing that got them excited was being praised by the guy they hate.

Let’s just say a lot of Dems in a lot of states started to get excited about the 2020 primaries.

I wonder if Nancy wore white as a symbol of unity, an effort to be One Of The Girls.

I didn’t bother with Abrams. Who cares. I was tempted to look up Bernie’s comments, but not really. It was enough to just see him scowl and pull into himself like a turtle.

      • JeremiahTMM February 6, 2019 / 3:43 am

Booker I think he had the biggest frown, Schumer looked like he was trying to hide under his empty suit, and Berni looked like he was a mad scientist with his top about to blow.

What cooked them Democrats is when he mentioned the states legalizing murder of infants. And then followed up with proposing legislation to outlaw abortion.
When he finished speaking the Democrats stormed out of there like they could have sprouted wings.

Aside from the Democrats, the President did a wonderful job, the best speech I’ve ever heard from any President. You can see his deeply found care for this country, and he knows what the Democrats ultimate goal is for this country, that’s why he had survivors from the Holocaust there, because they are living testimonials to the harsh reality of despotism, they know what it was like, and is why we won’t surrender our rights to the likes of the Clinton rabble, and her henchmen in the left-wing of the U.S. Congress.

I was actually a LOT embarrassed for them, especially AOC. The others kept looking to her for guidance, and she didn’t look like she knew where she was or why she was there.

Guests in the audience in the past have mostly been window dressing, but each of Trump’s guests were there for a reason, and he used their presence and their experiences better than I have ever seen it done. The survivor of Dachau sitting next to an American soldier who had been among the liberators was one of the most powerful SOTU moments I can ever remember.

      • M. Noonan February 6, 2019 / 1:19 pm

I’m thinking they were planning a walk out and it just didn’t come off…I believe they were flabbergasted: they didn’t know quite what to do.

      • Amazona February 6, 2019 / 3:23 pm

I think it was obvious the new “leader” couldn’t, you know…..LEAD. Every time the Girl Power group looked to her for leadership she looked like a deer caught in the headlights.

It was moving too fast for her, and she just couldn’t keep up. And all those people watching, waiting for her to mess up! It was, like, you know, like REAL, like the tippy-top of reality. Scary. Not like sitting around with her acolytes sitting at her feet hanging on every word, or her media fan club tossing her slow balls over the plate.

      • Amazona February 6, 2019 / 12:56 pm

My first impression was about how well both Trumps came across as so warm and real. And then I found myself moved by the stories of his guests—the people, their stories, and the genuine love and respect Trump showed them. I had a tear in my eye several times—the woman whose sentence was commuted by Trump, the black man who got out of prison thanks to the prison reform work done by Congress (and which I never heard about till last night) the little girl who had had brain cancer, and of course the veterans and the Dachau survivor, the ICE agent and the security guard wounded while defending people at the attack at the synagogue. I expected a family of someone killed by an illegal alien, but the others were surprises, and very well done.

Usually the guests are obviously pawns, but Trump tied them in with his narrative, and made it work. Another thing I noticed about the guests was their happiness to be there. Usually the person stands up and looks uncomfortable, but these people were happy to be part of the narrative–I loved the fist in the air from one of the D-day survivors, and the thumbs-up from others.

I agree with Amazona, the speech was masterful. It was full of common sense policies that nearly every member of that body has voted for at one point or another and he challenged them in a way that they will look hypocritical in opposition.

I thought he made Adam Schiff and other Democrats look very small in that Chamber when mentioning partisan investigations, and at the same time gave the young Democrat socialists a chance to self congratulate themselves which they did, and which looked self serving and small. Trump played him.

I just saw Rep Dan Crenshaw on MSNBC – he too is masterful and left many on the panel speechless with his simple, common sense answers unclouded by identity politics. Schumer followed and proceeded to look foolish but that’s a constant state for them.

    • Amazona February 6, 2019 / 12:43 pm

Not to imply that I gave this a lot of thought, but it occurred to me: The Professional Virgins howl about the evils of Male Patriarchy, but sit and sulk until Big Daddy gives them a nod and a smile and a pat on the head and then they light up like the pony finally got to the birthday party.

Too funny. As I said, Dems across the country are starting to work on their primary challenges to these empty-headed twits.

  3. Cluster February 6, 2019 / 9:00 am

And MSNBC is trying their best to convince us that Stacy Abrams rebuttal was good – only because she is a black woman. Truth be known the rebuttal was horribly weak. Full of all the empty platitudes Democrats have become famous for. Nothing more but it was delivered by someone with the right skin color and gender. Well done Democrats.

    • M. Noonan February 6, 2019 / 1:20 pm

I’ve seen a few clips and it seemed like The Speech You Give If You Watch MSNBC All The Time.

      • Amazona February 6, 2019 / 4:35 pm

The Speech You Give If You Watch MSNBC All The Time to the people who watch MSNBC all the time

  4. Cluster February 6, 2019 / 9:26 am

    And these are progressive outlets.

CBS News and CNN released instant polls taken immediately after President Trump’s State of the Union address with both polls finding 76 percent of those who watched approved of the speech. The CBS poll 72 percent approved of Trump’s immigration proposals while the CNN poll showed 76 percent approval with 59 percent “very positive.”

I would say the speech was a home run.

    • M. Noonan February 6, 2019 / 1:21 pm

Most liked it – though along with Coulter’s complaints, I’ve noticed that Never Trump thought it was tawdry. This plus the Resistance take on it shows it was probably the best speech we’ve seen in decades.

    • Ryan Murphy February 7, 2019 / 8:24 am

But but it’s just got a positive rating because all the Republicans turned in the MSNBC or CNN to watch the State of the Union because they totally thought that was the best place to do it!

  5. Cluster February 6, 2019 / 12:09 pm

I am really tired of Ann Coulter.

Coulter Blasts Trump For “Lamest, Sappiest” SOTU Ever. She then criticized the president’s vow that “America will never be a socialist country,” rebutting: “WRONG! If you don’t build a wall & deport illegals, we’ll be a socialist country in about 5 years. Nice words though.”

    • Amazona February 6, 2019 / 12:48 pm

Ann had her run. She was considered relevant when she skewered the Left, and you have to admit, she was good at it. But then something about Trump got under her skin, and when she was so much less successful in generating negativity toward him she couldn’t handle it.Her style was so edgy that she was always in danger of stepping over that edge from witty to just plain sour, and I think that happened to her a year or so ago. Maybe she thought her early support of Trump would get her the job of press secretary—who knows? But she is sure acting like the scorned woman in a relationship, bitter and furious and vengeful.

As for me, I always preferred to read her than to watch her—-I can’t stop looking at that Adam’s apple.

      • M. Noonan February 6, 2019 / 1:18 pm

I think she just doesn’t like Mexicans and it clouds her judgement…she’s obsessed just with that issue. And it an important one, and we do need the wall…but it isn’t the only thing going on.

      • Cluster February 6, 2019 / 7:28 pm

You’re right, she is myopically obsessed with immigration and it’s not a good look on her.

    Virginia is (D)irty

    • Amazona February 6, 2019 / 9:32 pm

I wondered what the people of Virginia thought when they saw their legislators ghoulishly celebrating, cheering and dancing and high-fiving over the passage of that bill. Is that really what the citizens of Virginia want? Is that how they want the country to see them?

Here in Colorado a couple of years ago our legislature passed some gun control laws and within a year two of the legislators had been successfully recalled and a third resigned so Governor Hickenlooper could appoint another Dem before the next election.

(BTW, The Looper is one of the Dems running for the presidency, old Mumble-Mouth hisself.)

    • Retired Spook February 7, 2019 / 11:55 am

The replies to her tweet were priceless. I predict there will come a time when Congress critters like her will fear the citizens of this country. One tweet had it exactly right — she may be the future of New York, but she’s NOT the future of this country.

  7. Cluster February 7, 2019 / 9:38 am

There is no better example of Democrats HATRED of this country and our President. AZ Senator Kirsten Sinema is applauding President Trump for announcing his plans for Family leave, an issue of which many Democrats support. Watch the gal stand up next to Sinema and tell her to “watch your ass” – meaning she is being “watched” by the Democrat gestapo:

    These are truly reprehensible people.

Here are the 5 goals outlined by AOC’s Green New Deal:

    – Net-zero greenhouse gas emissions through a fair and just transition
    for all communities and workers
    – Create millions of high-wage jobs and ensure prosperity and economic
    security for all
    – Invest in infrastructure and industry to sustainably meet the challenges
    of the 21st century
    – Clean air and water, climate and community resiliency, healthy food,
access to nature, and a sustainable environment for all
    – Promote justice and equity by stopping current, preventing future, and
repairing historic oppression of frontline and vulnerable communities

“Climate resiliency”- after all the planet hasn’t been very resilient in the last 10 billion years but AOC can cure that.

One of the critical missions of this plan is to:

Upgrade or replace every building in US for state-of-the-art energy
    efficiency

    LOL !!!!!

At least it’s a realistic plan. Behold the insanity linked below.

Don’t forget this. BTW, cow farts have been bothering Lefties for years now. Not long ago they wanted to access a tax on a number of cows higher than what they deemed OK, to punish the rancher for having cows that emit methane.

But don’t worry that this is associated in any way to stop the eating of meat. No, nope, not related at all, just keep walking, folks, nothing to see here
