Obama Snubs Public Education

Wow… despite calls for the Obamas to demonstrate their faith in the public school system, they have chosen to put their daughters in an elite private academy.

After a school search that set off weeks of frenzied speculation among parents here, President-elect Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, announced Friday that their two daughters would attend Sidwell Friends School, the prestigious academy that has educated generations of this city’s elite.

Apparently public schools were never even considered.

The Obama family had considered two other private institutions, Georgetown Day School and Maret School, for their girls, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7.

But Sidwell has long been described by some as the Harvard of Washington’s private schools. Its tuition runs as high as $29,442 a year.

“A number of great schools were considered,” said Katie McCormick Lelyveld, a spokeswoman for Mrs. Obama. “In the end, the Obamas selected the school that was the best fit for what their daughters need right now.”

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty of Washington strongly lobbied the Obamas to consider a public school, but that was apparently never an option.

The Obama girls currently attend private school, the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where annual tuition runs as high as $21,480, and the family did not tour any public schools on their recent visits.

Not good enough for the Obamas… but good enough for everyone else…

George Bush went to private school. George Bush’s daughters went to private school.

    Did you post about that?

  2. libS says:

of course not. The thing you have to understand here is that Matt and Mark don’t care about truth. They really don’t care. They are cogs in the political machine for the republicans. Thats all they do

  3. Matt Margolis says:

You both miss the point… Democrats don’t want regular people to have the choice of sending their kids to private school.

I am all for private schools. I hope to be able to afford to send my kids to private school some day… but Democrats oppose vouchers and school choice…

so… when Democrats talk up public education but send their own kids to private school that makes them hypocrites.

  4. winnowhead says:

Is Obama asking you to pay for his daughter’s education?

Do you really enjoy politicizing the president’s 7 and 10 year old daughters?

  5. libS says:

No Matt – you miss the point entirely. Liberals are all for people having the choice to send their kids to private schools. In fact they do have the choice to send their kids to private schools. What I , and many liberals are against, is taking public funds away from public schools to give them to private schools. Thats an entirely different proposition and you know it.

They have all the choice in the world to do it. Blame the private schools for charging 30-40 k per year making it something only the wealthy can afford.

And what does this have to do with what Obama decides to do with his private money? When Bush buys a ranch in Texas do you accuse him of not supporting inner cities? Because thats exactly the sort of logic you are applying

  6. kmg1 says:

I see this as all about security. Sidwell can provide the necessary security, but a public school can’t.

  7. jeremiah says:

The costs of education do carry some significance … but overall, we need to find out how to get the secular teachings out.

We can’t ignore this, even if the Courts are against us on this, we need to find reputable historians to write for us – good history books, good biology books, and so forth. We need to get discipline back in school – for those who are rebellious, and informing parents of the important role they play in their child’s upbringing, so that they respect their teachers and other students, and this will in turn, come back positively. The first place think we need to check into is the NEA, at least those of us who care, and see the danger that the N.E.A poses to the United States future … we need to throw all of those who are in charge of the N.E.A out!

Getting people in charge who will change the curriculum, affording children the truth instead of the atheistic liberal lies and propaganda.

This is a MUST!! Otherwise, we are in trouble.

I know this sounds as if it’s a monumental task, and it is, but just think of the future turmoil if we don’t do something.

Any Conservatives here have any ideas, strategies, etc, etc?

We also need to start covering stories that show what the students are being taught, and an explanation as to why these backward ideologies are unhealthy means of education, so that we may create awareness on the need for truth.

  8. jeremiah says:

Here are government records showing the top 7 leading problems in our schools ranked in order from first to seventh, 1940 and 1990. Notice the differences in type and seriousness-

    1940
    1. Talking out of turn.
    2. Chewing gum.
    3. Making noise.
    4. Running in the Halls.
    5. Cutting in Line.
    6. Dress-code violations.
    7. Littering.

    1990
    1. Drug abuse
    2. Alcohol abuse
    3. Pregnancy
    4. Suicide
    5. Rape
    6. Robbery
    7. Assault

And, of course, 18/19 years later and we can add homosexuality to the 1990 list.

    Very disturbing.

Here is a good video that shows us why we are in the shape we are in, and where we are headed if we do not stop the left from doing any more damage.

If you notice, the narrator explains how colleges teachers are reversing the mentality on the traditional gender roles, and other, etc.

  9. Mark Noonan says:

    kmg,

In practical terms, there is no difference between a public school and a private school regarding how to secure it. Security isn’t the issue – the issue is that the Obama’s, wisely, don’t want their lovely daughters exposed to the soul-destroying “education” provided by the DC public schools. This wouldn’t be a problem – except for the fact that the Obama’s are loud supporters of public school bureaucrats and union bosses.

    LibS,

You do realize that the money used for public schools comes from the very same public which, at least in large part, would like to have its kids go to some other school than the public school, don’t you? Instead of taking Citizen A’s tax money and forcing him to spend it on a failing public school, Citizen A will be able to take his tax money and spend it on a successful private school.

Your views in this matter are merely ignorant prejudice dressed up as thought. You really should look in to things….

  10. Danish Artist says:

Obama is for keeping failing schools operational. If they gave vouchers and schools had to compete (GASP!) for those funds then the failing schools would be rightfully closed and the successful ones rewarded and remain open. BUt liberals are committed (once again) to protect the unions.

Liberals would have to acknowledge that government is not the answer to all life’s problems, developments, etc. etc. and to them admitting that would be sacrilegious.

  11. casper says:

“You do realize that the money used for public schools comes from the very same public which, at least in large part, would like to have its kids go to some other school than the public school, don’t you?”

Do you have some proof to back up that statement? Point me to a valid poll that says the majority of Americans want their children in private schools. Otherwise, you are just making stuff up.

As a parent, and a teacher, I can say that all of us want our children to go to the best schools. In our case that was a public school. In other areas it might be a private school. It’s a decision you make as a parent.

  12. casper says:

    Danish Artist,
Prove that private schools given the same funding and serving the same population as public schools are better.

  13. jeremiah says:

    Casper,

While I can’t give an answer for the private school industry, the academic statistics for test scores of home-schooled children has consistently proven to be higher than those of the public school system.

    Follow link below-

    http://www.hslda.org/docs/nche/000010/200410250.asp

I don’t know how you feel about the trash that the the failure that is the public school system, but it is very upsetting…not just upsetting, but frightening, as there are very dangerous mentalities on the left who teach the public school system. Most notably in colleges and Universities. The atheistic mindset of these schools is a disaster waiting to happen. Something must be done.

I propose cutting all funding of public schools, and the N.E.A temporarily until we can get somebody in there who will get the correct standards and curriculum before America’s future is erased…if it hasn’t already been erased.

Again, though, this is incumbent upon the will of the people, to somehow put barriers up between the ACLU, AUfSoCaS, and the Courts … these are dangerous atheist controlled organizations.

We have to block Obama on every corner if we are to save our Republic!!!

  14. kmg1 says:

    Mark,

You really believe that a public school is as capable of prodiving security as Sidwell? Sidwell has a long history of children of prominent parents attending and can ensure their safety while not disrupting the education of the students. A public school is not adequately funded and is not capable of doing that.

  15. casper says:

    jeremiah,
“I propose cutting all funding of public schools, and the N.E.A temporarily until we can get somebody in there who will get the correct standards and curriculum before America’s future is erased…if it hasn’t already been erased..”

Which standards and curriculum do you want corrected? The math standards, social studies standards, P.E. standards, etc. If you cut funding to all public schools, you will have millions of students staying at home or roaming the streets. Are you ok with that?

And yes you are right about home schooling. I could do a lot better job with one student than I do with the 150 that I have now. Tell me who is going to home school all of these kids while their parents work.

  16. Max says:

I don’t fault him for this. His daughters SHOULD be in a private school because he is going to be the next President of the United States. They should be protected even though they will have secret service duty assigned to them.

  17. jeremiah says:

Which standards and curriculum do you want corrected?

    Casper,

In particular, social studies, American and world history curriculum. In college this would be considered the social sciences.

Also, the removal of feminism studies, sex education studies, Darwinism studies, and so forth. Going back to the traditional gender roles.

And by ’standards’ – I mean the dress codes, language codes, just regular manners. A good way to help in this, would be to implement sharing, and encouragement from the Bible, and praying with the students, and this will help the students.

Right now, we’re in a situation where the home is failing more because of the pasts implementation of atheistic socialism … so, in that case, where we have parents that are a product of the past, we need someone who can teach the children, even if they are paid, but with the current condition of the public educational system there is no one there to teach the children so we have to have reform.

It’s a major, major problem that needs fixed … before it’s too late!

  18. casper says:

    jeremiah,
We already teach American and world history. What do you consider traditional gender roles?

We have dress codes now. How would you change them? We model good manners, but we can’t force them on students.
How is atheistic socialism causing homes to fail? What do you think we need to reform?

  19. jeremiah says:

We already teach American and world history.

    Casper,

Yes, but they have been edited by left-wing historians. Why have they been edited? What was their purpose? My thinking is that they want to make America to appear as a “bad” country … that we are “brutal” people. Much like left-wing historians will do in future textbooks in reference to George W. Bush, if we don’t stop them. They will fill the children’s minds with lies to cause them to hate.

What do you consider traditional gender roles?

The man is the head of the household, and the wife serves as support – man and woman as the only compatible bond in marriage for life.

In current education, the atheistic curriculum on multiculturalism is used as a tactic by Satan to confuse children about their sex, and it needs to end.

    How would you change them?

Not strict enough. Girls should not be wearing tight fitting clothing or shorts. Boys should not wear tank tops or shorts. They should wear neutral clothing without any obscenities written on them or images, etc, etc.

Suit & tie for boys – dresses and bonnets for girls should be the dress code.

You know, teach responsibility, and help build character in these young people. Not the non-shalante, anything-goes attitude.

We model good manners, but we can’t force them on students.

You have to teach manners and accountability in a group setting. Just going through the normal routine from the basics from one bell to the next isn’t going to teach them anything. You have to give the lessons on being nice to others, and what the importance of morals are, and their origination from the Bible, and how this book will be the best tool to guide them through life and a more helpful future.

How is atheistic socialism causing homes to fail?

Did you not read the 1990 list above?

This is how that translates into the future…

The same people who are fathers and mothers today are the same people who grew up from the conception of secularism, multi-culturalism, Darwinism, Marxism (Communism), and atheism’s infiltration of our public school system implemented by and courtesy of the atheist controlled ACLU and Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

These parents then have no interest in teaching their children the truth, because they don’t know the truth, as they were brainwashed by their worthless education, and many more things can be factored into this – such as technology, the internet and television and the filth that is contained in them. This is why there is so much divorce, etc, etc. And thus, you have broken families because of pornography, alcohol, drugs etc, etc.

What do you think we need to reform?

    Society.

And the only way to do that, is by starting from the bottom, and at the bottom are the children who will be the future of America. However, it starts with a change of heart at home, so that we have the Will power to change these institutions of learning.

Smash the ACLU and other anti-Christian organizations … they are causing more pain and suffering than you could know. They are destroying the future of America!

Get your children away from the public school system and away from the ACLU!!!

  20. Kurt says:

Obama is more than happy to take the BIG FAT checks from the dunderheads at the NEA and the AFT while proclaiming his love for the public school system. He just doesn’t want his daughters to be taught by the same people. Rich liberals have been doing this for years. I am suprised it is even a story anymore.

  21. canadianobserver says:

    Bonnets for girls???

Like the females wore on ‘Little House on the Prairie’, Jeremiah; or do you mean some other form of headdress?

    Please explain.

  22. FmrMarine says:

    minnowhead

Do you really enjoy politicizing the president’s 7 and 10 year old daughters?

First the PRESIDENTdoes not have 7 and 10 yo daughters!

Second it certainly worked for you idiots against Palin. I guess what goes around comes around.
You lefturds have a lot of coming around coming get used to it!

  23. Danish Artist says:

casper, you call yourself a school teach and ask a ridiculous question as that?

look at the statistics. Public schools are more notorious for allowing students to graduate when the are functionally illiterate. You RARELY see that in private schools.

Private schools are accountable to their boards and stockholders. While public schools are accountable to NO ONE. Look at the vast majority of inner city schools that are complete failures and the same people are the teachers and administrators. New Orleans is the perfect example. Their failure rates are consistently high and the same people are time and again in charge. The School Board Administrator is a mayorial appointed position and in most cases is run out of office by the subordinates (which are elected by the people) that are never replaced!! Their lack of cooperation prevents the administrator from reforming the system.

Competition for public funds will end deadlocks such as this and end other such bad policies, as well as making each institution more accountable to the people. IF you cannot see that then you have absolutely no business being a teacher. You are just another mouthpiece for the worthless unions that receive increased benefits at the cost of a child’s education.

  24. jeremiah says:

    Please explain.

    Like these…

Why, co, do you have a problem with proper dress codes for children?

  25. canadianobserver says:

    You’re hilarious, Jeremiah!!

  26. the road to serfdom says:

If the Democrats champion Public Schools attendance and snub private education or school choice in their public dialogue then we should chastise them for their hypocrisy

  27. casper says:

Public school systems vary greatly from district to district. In our district, we are accountable to the school board whose members are elected. They are accountable to the voters.
Public schools are required to take everyone. Private schools aren’t. I am all for vouchers as long as the private schools that receive them are held to the same standards as public schools and are required to teach anyone wishing to go to their school. Most private schools aren’t willing to do that.

  28. Orlando says:

    Democrats oppose vouchers

Largely because vouchers don’t tend to work. Of course, you wingnuts would know that if your views on the matter weren’t merely ignorant prejudice dressed up as thought. You guys should look into things….

Also: Spot on in comment #27, Casper.

  29. Danish Artist says:

“Largely because vouchers don’t tend to work.”

Orlando, do you have any proof of that claim?

    Ignorant prejuduce?

Do you believe in irony little man?

  30. Casper says:

    Danish Artist,
“Largely because vouchers don’t tend to work.”
Orlando, do you have any proof of that claim?”

Do you have any proof they do work? I’ve read studies that go both ways.

  31. Orlando says:

Orlando, do you have any proof of that claim?

Well, there’s this. And there’s this admission that vouchers don’t work from a conservative (former) voucher proponent. I could go on, but if I add more links, this comment won’t get published. So yes, I have lots of proof. I do hope you won’t blithely ignore it. We’ll see, though.

By the way, did you not catch where the “ignorant prejudice” line came from?

  32. jeremiah says:

Vouchers generally don’t tend to work with those who put all faith and credit into the failed public school system.

Are public schools failures because of their requirements? No. Children who attend public school are generally smart, but in a dangerous way.

Public schools are failures because of what they teach, and what they fail to teach which would be values. That’s why our country is so messed up today.

Get rid of the current curriculum and teach those things which will secure children a future.

We MUST do this, if we are to thwart the ACLU’s goal of a Communist society.

  33. jeremiah says:

    This is WAR!!!!

I mean it … we’s gonna have to go to WAR with the ACLU!

    I said WAR!!!

  34. “Get rid of the current curriculum and teach those things which will secure children a future.”

And what are those things Jeremiah? The Bible? We have a little something here in the U.S, it’s called religious freedom. It’s part of what makes America great. And Theocratists like you want to take away that right. Why do you hate America?

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion”

    That’s from the constitution.

    God/Allah/Genesha/Kami/the human kindess bless everyone
NO exceptions, regardless of religion, race, gender or sexual orientation.

  35. “This is WAR!!!!

I mean it … we’s gonna have to go to WAR with the ACLU!

    I said WAR!!!”

Peace! I tell all of you, we must make peace! Never kill or hate anybody or anything, ever!

  36. jeremiah says:

Never kill or hate anybody or anything, ever!

I hate no one … I love my country … the same as my Fore-Fathers who sacrificed blood, sweat, and tears to secure freedom for a land we call America!

Now we have a bunch of Democrats who want to piss it all away … what a shame!!

Therefore, it’s time to stand and sacrifice any and all for the freedom that our Fore-Fathers handed to us!

It’s only fair to them and millions of Americans who were sold on lies this election, so that they will know the truth!!!

Therefore, stand at attention and listen for the trumpet to sound!!!!

  37. “Now we have a bunch of Democrats who want to piss it all away … what a shame!!”

Awww… Is Jeremiah upset because we don’t have a bunch of Religious Zealots in our party?

  38. Mark Noonan says:

    Orlando,

Interesting article – to sum it up:

Because it has been extraordinarily difficult to obtain widespread use of school choice and given that in those few areas where school choice has been provided, public schools have failed to improve, the concept of school choice is a failure.

This doesn’t commend itself to me. That the author then goes on to assert that if we just had a good educational program in the public schools, all would be well, is – to put it mildly – a big “no duh”, moment. The problem is that the public schools are designed to prevent anything like a good educational program from being implemented. If we could get that, no one would have ever thought of school choice as it would have been un-necessary.

The fundamental problem here is that the primary purpose of public education has become the collection of union dues to be distributed to the Democrats during their political campaigns. If school choice as a means of fixing the system doesn’t commend itself to you, the alternative might be to ban public employee unions – and their membership – from donating to or volunteering for political campaigns. You’ll be able to reform education to your heart’s content once its no longer a political football.

But you and I both know that won’t happen.

We need to reform education. The people who run education will refuse any genuine reform as any such thing will curb their power. Its a quite a quandary, ain’t it? Enter school choice – because it allows parents who care and students who are willing to break out of the moribund public school system (parents who don’t care will be such whether you have private or public schools…and students who are unwilling will be so ditto – part of the problem with making school “free and compulsory” is that it means you’re saddling the “will” with the “won’t”, and given the nature of government it eventually means that the “won’t” will predominate).

Ultimately, school choice will raise up a class of very well educated people who will rise to leadership with the understanding that you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. Education geared to the idiot notion that everyone will graduate after 12 years with a goal of college will be tossed aside in favor of a nuanced system which, while providing the basics, leaves education choices up to parents and kids.

  39. The Public School debacle is a classic example of failed Republican ideology – succeed or die. It applies to business, yes, but in no way does it reply to such a delicate systmes like our Education system. Besides, who says private schools, if allowed to be the main choice, are going to be any better? We’ve all seen what total privatization has done to our healthcare system. If everything is privatized as you hope and dream it will be, we will be living in a hell.

  40. Orlando says:

This doesn’t commend itself to me.

    There’s a shocker.

You’ll be able to reform education to your heart’s content once its no longer a political football.

Does this mean you’ll stop trying to play political football with it, then? Somehow I doubt it.

  41. jeremiah says:

    Mark,

The only way to disband the school unions and ACLU is physically … they ain’t no other way.

This is the only way we can get the curriculum changed, and we can’t fire the teachers who teach the anything goes garbage, because we can’t just “hope” the teachers will change their minds on what to teach …. we have to MAKE them teach better before they train the next generation of Communists.

    This calls for revolution.

  42. jeremiah says:

I mean, look what’s happening to our schools …

    http://www.onenewsnow.com/Legal/Default.aspx?id=328186

And then we don’t do a thing when they put atheism in our face.

  43. This calls for revolution.
    41. jeremiah | November 23rd, 2008 at 7:04 pm

All you do is hate. And for you, Atheism, is not mixing religion into anything. You know why we don’t do that? Because, we are a diverse society. So what if not everyone’s a bible thug like you? It’s my right not to be.

  44. jeremiah says:

    All you do is hate

    Hate?

Who am I supposed to hate?

    Nobody!

And for you, Atheism, is not mixing religion into anything.

    Who founded atheism? Satan.

How long has atheism been around? A long time … many, many, many moons … and ol’ Satan still convinces people of his lies the same today as he did when mankind chose to believe in his lies, and thus, through man’s choice of disobedience, trusting in Satan more than God – God then had to show man what the consequences were for sinning against His Will, so He cursed the earth…to give them a taste of what Satan’s ways are all about, which is suffering and sadness, hurt, guilt, and various other complications of a life lived in disobedience.

If we live a Christian life, we won’t escape all suffering, pain, this, that and the other, but we can avoid most, to nearly all of it if we live according to God’s Word.

Nothing is guaranteed to any man …. there was only One Man who ever triumphed fully over the world, and that was Jesus Christ, through His sacrifice all were afforded another opportunity to see the proof that God truly does love us, and without His sacrifice, none of us would be here today.

The curse that God sent wasn’t mean-spirited at all, as so, so many atheists like to claim today, in belly-aching about the many hazmats that occur because they want to do things their own way, and so they blame it all on God, never on themselves of which they see more in their own flesh and blood than the One who created their flesh and blood, and all of the many intricate details of the human mind, and the spirit that God gave them to gain some perspective on the connection between their own physical bodies and the vastness of God’s great glory in all things.

What a mighty God we serve! Amen?

So, God has given us the ability to believe or not believe … He gives us a choice to freely obey or disobey. Our ForeFathers knew this, and is why they fought, shedding their blood and paying the price for generations after them … the only problem being … the problem is that atheists don’t want this freedom of choice, which is why children are being coerced by the public school system to conform to the atheist’s world-view, and in the process suppress the Christians of their right to freely speak of the love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, that would help them to become upstanding citizens who cherish the freedom to do good instead of bad.

Yes, you have all the right in the world to be an atheist … but it saddens God very much that after He did so much for you that you would reject Him this way, and you want to make fun of others who follow Him.

For these things, Judgment shall come!

We didn’t vote for him because he’d send his kids to public school. Moron.

Although, I will admit that I’m disappointed that he didn’t consider DCPS– everybody likes to trash it, but it’s really not all that bad (OK, it is on the whole, but certain schools are very, very good). On the other hand, I now have some people who are very close to me who have their kids in the same school, pretty much the same ages as the Obama kids.

But anyway, the point is, I didn’t support him because he’d send his kids to public school.
