Putting herself in stark contrast to Obama’s “prices will necessarily skyrocket” proposal – from The Hill:
Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) vowed Tuesday that, in her presidency, gasoline prices would fall back to less than $2 per gallon.
Bachmann, speaking to a town-hall meeting in South Carolina, said she would pursue energy policies that send pump prices down to levels not seen since early 2009, at the thick of the U.S. recession.
“Under President Bachmann you will see gasoline come down below $2 per gallon again,” she said in Greenville. “That will happen.”…
The thing is, the trick can be done – and done rather easily. All it takes is “drill, baby, drill” and a bit of extra effort in building refineries. Just the announcement that we were abandoning Obama’s “permatorium” on offshore drilling would probably drop a barrel of oil by 10 or 20%. Add to that the knowledge that the EPA would not try to regulate out of existence such promising new technology as “fracking”, and we could see a barrel of oil going for half or less what it is today by the end of a Bachmann first term…and that would go a long way towards lowing the price of gasoline to the $2 a gallon range.
The United States cannot become oil-independent. We just use too much of it – but given what we know is there and with the existing and developing technology we have, we can certainly reduce our demand for foreign oil by quite a lot. My guess is by about half (so we’d be importing about a third of our oil needs). That kind of a slackening of demand on the global market will, in turn, drop oil prices everywhere. It works out, in the end, to a gigantic tax cut on wealth creation…not only in the direct savings on energy costs, but on the follow-on effects of people having more money to spend on things besides energy.
If we couple such a flat-out development of our oil resources with further development of “clean coal”, nuclear and other alternative energy sources, we can get past the “oil chasm” in our economic history…reaching for a time when our overall demand for oil starts to drop year by year as new energy supplies come on line. The additional benefit – and it is massive – is that the fewer dollars we’re sending overseas for oil means less wealth for our enemies to use against us.
This is a gigantic and easily understood advantage for the United States and whole world. Naturally, Obama and his liberals are opposed to it – perversely, because they feel the United States needs to be punished for being so wealthy, powerful and free. Carrying such a positive, American message is just what we need to do in 2012…as Obama keeps talking about wind and solar, we’ll be talking about what people know, and what can work today. The rest of the GOP field can do no better than to follow Bachmann’s lead…and if it irks them to have to do so, then the suggestion is to come up with something equally bold to restore American prosperity and greatness.

Mr Noonan you are half right here. There could be petrol in the United States priced at less than 50 cents per liter. Drilling will not lower that price because it is patently impossible for the United States to produce enough of its own crude to drive the global price down below $50 per barrel. US production has little effect on the global price of crude or refined petrol. These prices are set by global demand and OPEC production.
A President Bachmann may be able to place in effect policies [ repeal of Health Care reform, draconian tax cuts for the wealthy and a reduction in unemployment benefits] with the support of GOP House and Senate that would drive the global economy back to Recession and then Depression which would assure plentiful cheap petrol which no one could afford to purchase!

There is simply no means by which President Bachmann or any other president can drop the price of petrol below $2 using ordinary measures. Unless Ms Bachmann is going to nationalize the oil industry in the US this was a moment of judgment that shows she is not qualified to be President.
As for ice water here in Dis the current price is ~$5.65 per litre.

I just feel the United States could produce enough of its own oil to overwhelm a drop in production by OPEC. If the US could improve its output by 3 million barrel a day [a rise of nearly 25%] OPEC would simply decrease their production by 4 million barrels a day and the price would rise.
OPEC is our fourth largest supplier. Canada and Mexico being the top two, and if the US taps into the vast reserves of the Bakken fields in ND, WY and MT, we could become one of our own largest suppliers within ten years, rendering OPEC meaningless.

This is a fallacy. First if such measures were taken immediately after Bachmann became President she would be at minimum two years out of office before those fields began to produce. next by 2023 the global demand for petroleum will have risen from 90 million barrels a day to nearly 130 million barrels a day.
The Bakken fields hol only a maximum of 4 billion barrels of oil and from these fields over 100 million barrels have already been brought to well head. At the current rate of US consumption the Bakken fields could only support the US fully for 184 days or with imported oil for 521 days.

As a economist in my other persona (let’s face it, it’s too damn hard to sign off then sign back on with another name so I’m going to stick with this one for a while) I know the U.S. does not have oil which can be pumped out as gasoline so any discussion of America’s oil production lowering gas price is just silly. OPEC will just pump more and raise the price of crude so we would have to buy crude for our website at a higher price.
We have plenty of crude on our website, and we like to spread our crude here because no one will ever visit our website.

Let’s see; the Bakken Field would produce roughly 4 billion barrels and current US consumption is 18 million per day, so that would be a 222 day supply with no additional; 2/3 of a year and no Bakken Field would yield 0 million barrels or 0 days which is, by my calculation 0% of a year’s supply. Now, OPEC’s current production is about 28,927,000 barrels per day and the world uses 82,769,000 barrels per day, the additional 4 billion barrels from Bakken, added to the additional 36 billion barrels from US off-shore drilling means OPEC can raise or lower its production as much or as little as they like and the US could tell them to piss up a square rope; have I got this right? HELLO hello hello hello?
Now let’s look at that timing thing. If we begin production process from Bakken Field just after the election it will be 2 years before it begins to produce; the futures market, being somewhat dependent on the future price, like DUH, will respond and since the Obama Administration has blamed the Futures Market and speculators for the high prices, this should take the wind out of that argument like minor dojo already has.
But, getting back to the production, if we start right away we have an end product in the pipeline (pretty good pun, huh? ) in two years. If we follow minor dojo’s advice and don’t begfin at Bakken Field, we’ll have a product in roughly never, which is just slightly longer than two years.
The time difference is about the same as the interminably amount of time until Obama is booted from the White House and has to pay for Michelle’s extravagant vacations the old fashioned way; get a job. (Just kidding, he has no skills, no law license, no personality, the only place he’d fit in would be as a contributing writer at our useless website.)

These drones are all overlooking the FACT that the price of gasoline is based on more than just the price of crude oil. Refining capacity is also a factor. For example, in California, their specifications for fuel to be sold there are such that a few refineries in this country make that formulation. There was a problem at one of those refineries a few years ago. Of course they blamed “big oil” and greed rather than the fact that their supply was lower.
In the last twenty years, refining capacity in this country has been severly reduced. I posted this link before to a federal report showing this. If you want it, LOOK IT UP. I am tired of repeating myself.
