Happy New Year to All, even our friends from other sites.

The previous thread was an example of a discussion even though there were no resounding answers–it was civil. Something I would like to see repeated throughout the upcoming year. Good job Spook.

Thanks, DB. It was a good discussion — and civil. Hopefully I will continue to have some free time into 2012, although much of this year will be devoted to getting all my ducks in a row so I can sell my business and retire next December.

      • dbschmidt's avatar dbschmidt January 1, 2012 / 12:27 pm

Find something to do after retirement. I am not a Type-A personality and have actually won the procrastinator’s award (which I may pick up some day) but I went back to work because (and I can not believe I am saying this) there is only so much fishing that one can do.

I am looking at returning to working for another corporation soon with an eye on starting one of my business prospects or at least getting the groundwork laid over this year. Still aiming for the BBQ one and may start talking with the 6 state agencies this year and leave their matching Federal counterparts for next year.

It’s a gorgeous, sunny, blue-sky day here in the mountains of Colorado. I’m off to feed critters, and to enjoy the Yak Happy Dance of Joy and Celebration, as they put on quite a show when a new bale of hay is presented. Cows take it for granted, but yak eyebrows shoot up, yak mouths make happy O’s, yak tails go in the air, and yaks run, leap, spin, buck, cavort and generally express joy and celebration at having new hay, even when they still have hay left over from last time.

They still have some, but I am going to give them more because it seems like a happy way to start a new year.

One of my baby yak bulls is named Wooly Bully. The other baby yak bull is named Wooly Bully. It’s just the best name for a baby yak bull.

Send some sunshine our way. Typical, gloomy mid-winter day in Indiana. Windy, raining and 40 degrees this morning, dropping to 20 tonight with 6″ of snow on the way. But we’re alive and healthy; and optimistic, as you are, that 2012 will be a good year.

even better, my ding dong liberal democrat sister is considering voting for Romney she is done with the POS and the Mooch.

        Neo,

I don’t believe your sister is unique in that respect. Although a lot can change in the next few weeks and months, I have sort of resolved in the back of my mind that Romney will probably be the GOP candidate. If he is, I’ll have a lot fewer reservations about voting for him than I did for McCain in ’08. I figure he’ll attract a lot of the Independents who voted for Obama in 2008, and he’ll lose some Evangelicals on the other end who’ll stay home. I was surprised, however, to hear a report out of Iowa this morning that Romney is second among Evangelicals going into the Iowa Caucuses.

      • neocon1's avatar neocon1 January 1, 2012 / 2:38 pm

One thing for Romney whether one agrees with Mormonism or not, he is a Good religious, smart man, with many credentials. I do not want him at this point but I agree he is mountains higher than juan Mclame.
He has shown he can and will attack Obummer which he will need to do and if he is the choice I will fully support him.

      • dbschmidt's avatar dbschmidt January 2, 2012 / 1:14 pm

Since we went OT here I am wondering if the MSM is pushing Romney because it could take Obama-care off the table–after all it is a Federal model of Romney-care. That is one critical intrusion if left to stand will push us into Statism model of Big Government.

I am still anyone but Romney; however, I will hold my nose once again to remove our current occupant. Four more years with a lame duck would speed us towards downfall. I feel President Obama was accurate in believing he is the fourth best President ever–only from a Progressive’s point of view. It was no accident that our small nation became a world power based on freedom and the rule of law and it has been the Progressives from Wilson onwards that have been destroying it including our current PotUS.

      • Amazona's avatar Amazona January 2, 2012 / 2:55 pm

If the MSM are pushing Romney because they think it would “…take Obama-care off the table..” I think the best responses would be the ones Romney has already offered—-that he would work to repeal Obamacare, and that the Massachusetts plan was a Constitutionally allowed STATE decision whereas a federal plan is prohibited by the Constitution.

The fact that Obamacare is a Federal model of Romney-care is the key.

      • dbschmidt's avatar dbschmidt January 2, 2012 / 7:38 pm

        Ama,

I fully agree with you and the conclusion; however, we have posters here that do not even understand the ramifications of making Senators a popular vote (17th Amendment) so how do you expect to educate those with then attention span of a gnat to understand the 10th amendment or how it has been bastardized (like separation of church & State) into something barely recognizable these days.

I try to educate and inform as many people that will listen and have even flipped a few that finally understood but in this case–I am not sure we have enough time at 30 or 60 seconds a pop.

        “Instructions
        Things You’ll Need

Cardboard box measuring 4 feet long, 2 feet high and 2 feet wide.
        Masking tape
        Scissors
        Poster board
        White glue
        Aluminum foil
        Poster paint
        Foam paintbrush
        Ribbon
        Stapler

        1

Tape the box closed and tape all bent edges of the box for strength.
        2

Cut holes in the bottom and top of the long sides of the box big enough for the child to fit through.
        3

Cut large triangles from the poster board. Tape them to the sides of the box for wings.
        4

Cut a large circle from the poster board with a diameter of 4 feet. Cut through the circle from one edge to the center. Slide the cut edges together and tape them to create a nose cone for the spaceship. Tape the nose cone to the front of the box.
        5

Paint the box gray and the wings black. Glue the aluminum foil on the nose cone.
        6

Staple two lengths of ribbon to the top edges of the box on either side of the cut-out hole. The ribbons will serve as “suspenders” to hold the spaceship box on the child’s shoulders.”

You said, in the 1st person, “i only have to do a quick sample…” so go right ahead. It’s not up to me to make your point for you—-too bad for you, since you are clearly incapable of making one yourself.

There is no “issue” to address.

You gave no political position whatsoever, and refuted nothing. The sum total of your alleged refutation is, basically, “huh-UH!!!” and you have repeatedly made it quite clear you are totally clueless regarding the meaning of politics, so I have no idea of what you think you said that constitutes a “firm political position”.

You claim there is something in the archives that will prove, somehow, that conservatives are not “compassionate” and then you are silly enough to claim that this vague reference is, in and of itself, “proof”.

Crawl out of the cardboard box, look up the First Rule of Holes, take it to heart, and quit digging yourself in deeper every time you post another of your inane, insipid, infantile little whimpers of self-assumed darlingness.

      • Cluster's avatar Cluster January 3, 2012 / 8:36 am

        Canadian,

Let me start by telling you what compassion isn’t. Compassion is not designing welfare programs that encourage unproductive behavior; ie: having more children out of wedlock, and extending unemployment benefits almost indefinitely. Compassion is not telling minorities that if not for the protection of, and hand outs from liberals, that they don’t have much of a chance. Compassion is not telling inner city kids that they can not choose the school they want to go to, and instead need to keep attending a failing school. Compassion is not protecting young girls from their parents if they become pregnant, or making birth control available to young kids and actually encouraging that choice, and compassion is certainly not telling women that killing their infant is a “choice”.

Maybe if you actually understood what compassion really is, compassionate conservatism would make sense to you.

Thank you, Cluster, for taking the time to educate me on what the political philosophy of compassionate conservatism… isn’t; much appreciated. I would be grateful, though, if you could also educate me as to what you think the political philosophy of compassionate conservatism… is. I realize that when I say that compassionate conservatism uses traditionally conservative techniques and concepts in order to improve the general welfare of society, that is clearly not specific enough and shows that I obviously lack the intellect to understand the concept. If you prefer to wait until Amazona gives us her eloquent and detailed political pholosphy on the subject, I completely understand.

    Ya gotta love this.

GOP’s election battle plan: Use Obama’s own words against him

By Peter Wallsten, Published: January 1

With Republican voters in Iowa set to finally begin picking a nominee to challenge President Obama, GOP officials in Washington are quietly and methodically finishing what operatives are calling “the book” — 500 pages of Obama quotes and video links that will form the backbone of the party’s attack strategy against the president leading up to Election Day 2012.

The document, portions of which were reviewed by The Washington Post, lays out how GOP officials plan to use Obama’s words and voice as they build an argument for his defeat: that he made specific promises and entered office with lofty expectations and has failed to deliver on both.

Republican officials say they will leverage the party’s newly catalogued video library containing every publicly available utterance from Obama since his 2008 campaign. Television and Internet ads will juxtapose specific Obama promises of job gains, homeowner assistance, help for people in poverty, lower health insurance premiums and stricter White House ethics standards against government data and news clippings that paint a different reality.

“Compassionate conservatism” is not only NOT a “political philosophy”, the claim that it is just goes to prove, again, the simple fact that the PL trolls here are absolutely, utterly clueless about the meaning of politics.

Politics is not about emotion or any of the other distractions the clueless prefer to the real nuts and bolts of governance.

The term “compassionate conservative” was a poorly thought-out and clumsy effort to counter the Liberal lie that conservatives are just big meanies. After a few decades of Lefty propaganda claiming that only the Left “cared” about things like “the poor” and so on, someone decided to use the term “COMPASSIONATE conservative” to try to show that conservatives would also like to give the world a hug.

It was a catch-phrase, and a dumb one at that, as it implied that the accusations of the Left were convincing enough to demand a rebuttal.

Conservatism, based as it is on the expansion and protection of personal liberty, on seeing people as individuals and not as mere members of a demographic, on equality as individuals, on equality of opportunity, is BY DEFINITION “compassionate” if you view that word as one reflecting profound respect for human dignity, the right to life, the right to freedom, and the right of representative government. Conservatism is a political philosophy based on the conviction that close adherence to the Constitution of the United States creates a nation in which those rights flourish.

“Compassion”, on the other hand, is a vaguely and often conveniently defined emotion, which can range from the definitions laid out above to condescending pity accompanied by handouts designed to provide basic sustenance but which do nothing to elevate the human spirit.

The Right believes in the first definition, the Left depends on the second. For the Right, this is simply part of its underlying belief in and respect for the human spirit and its need for freedom and opportunity. For the Left, it is part of a political calculation of how to gain power by buying votes under the guise of “caring”.

This probably explains the Left’s effort to project upon the Right the idea that “compassion” is political.

    • bozo's avatar bozo January 3, 2012 / 8:34 pm

There you have it. Conservatives think “compassion” is a bad thing, and only lied about being “compassionate” to get elected.

As far back as 1831, Tocqueville nailed it all: “As one digs deeper into the national character of the Americans, one sees that they have sought the value of everything in this world only in the answer to this single question: how much money will it bring in?”

      Everything old is new again.

      Happy New Year.

      • Amazona's avatar Amazona January 3, 2012 / 11:14 pm

There you have it. Having run the comments about compassion not being political through his mental digestive process, freakzo excretes something completely unrecognizable as even remotely related to the original statement.

Only a blender-brain like the self-identified freak could manage to mangle ideas such as “….the expansion and protection of personal liberty, ….. seeing people as individuals and not as mere members of a demographic, ….. equality as individuals, …. equality of opportunity, …… profound respect for human dignity…..the right to life….the right to freedom, and the right of representative government…” as “a bad thing”.

Uh-oh—buttface just blurted out a political philosophy, though he mistakenly attributed it to the Right. Thanks for finally expressing your personal philosophy, freakzo.

No doubt he finds “….. a political philosophy based on the conviction that close adherence to the Constitution of the United States creates a nation in which those rights flourish…” to be “a bad thing” as well.

Interesting that your own self-loathing, so well illustrated by the way you see yourself and want others to see you, extends to contempt for your country as well.
