The Sublime Legacy of President Bush

He’s hated, he’s reviled – he’s the man Obama will blame for everything, including his defeat in 2012. But he’s better that what we’ve got now, and far better than we actually deserved:

What if a president, on his own initiative, under no demands from staff or from supporters or opponents, set out to spend an unprecedented amount of money on AIDS in Africa, literally billions of dollars, at a time when the nation could not afford it, citing his faith as a primary motivation and, ultimately, saved more than a million lives?

Wouldn’t the story be front-page news, especially in top, liberal newspapers? Wouldn’t it lead on CNN, MSNBC and the “CBS Evening News”? Might statues be erected to the man in the nation’s more “progressive” cities?

What if the president was George W. Bush?

I pose these uncomfortable questions for two reasons: 1) President Bush did precisely that regarding the African AIDS tragedy; and 2) a study claims that Bush’s remarkable action has indeed saved many precious lives.

And as someone who has closely followed Bush’s humanitarian gesture from the outset, I’m not surprised that the former president continues to not receive the accolades he deserves — including even from conservative supporters — for this generous act.

Bush himself realizes the lack of gratitude and media attention. I personally witnessed it very recently, on June 17, when I was in attendance for one of Bush’s first postpresidential speeches, in Erie, Pa. There, too, he mentioned the AIDS initiative — even adding that one of his daughters is in Africa today, working on the epidemic — and, there again, it received no press coverage whatsoever.

In a large sense, we deserve Barack Obama – a mindless drone who is all image and no grit. A nation which spends its time watching trash like “American Idol” deserves no better – only our military and our civil volunteers (those who actually do things, not those who “community organize”) redeem us. President Bush has a mind of his own and tremendous courage – and thus he was well suited both to those who get down and dirty fighting poverty and disease as well as those who don our nation’s uniform and battle for liberty around the world; and such people, especially in the military, showed untold devotion to the man’s ideas. Sacrificing again and again to bring this humane and, dare we say it?, Christian vision to the world.

One wonders how devoted people will be to Obama’s “soft” approach to terrorism and his plans for US government aid for abortion around the world? Not exactly the sort of thing one chargers over the top for, huh?

Once this generation is dead – especially this generation of hate-filled leftists – then, and only then, will the full truth about President Bush come out. Certainly, a flawed man. A sinner, as we all are. A man who made mistakes – but a man who always tried to do the right thing and who wasn’t a slave to polls, as Democrats are. I said we’d miss President Bush, and we do – but his legacy is secure, and the world is a better place for him having been President of the United States.

One of the things I liked about Bush was his humility. For one so often (wrongly) accused of arrogance, in fact he was and is a humble man, with a respect for the place in history which he was honored to occupy, but without the overweening ego of his predecesor or the man who followed him into office. He just kept his head down, did his job to the best of his ability, did what he thought was right, and then left the job with dignity and class.

He announced the Africa initiative, once, quietly. He didn’t brag about it, he didn’t posture as a great humanitarian, he didn’t grovel for public adulation for what he did, he just did what he thought was the right thing to do.

It is shameful how so many who disagreed with the decisions he made went on to attack him on such a personal and hateful level.

  2. Amazona says:

And while Bush tried to save lives in Africa, “America’s First Black President” is promoting more abortion there, and all over the Third World.

  3. pain says:

This is the way we weed the trolls, weed the trolls, weed the trolls so early in the morning.

  4. pain says:

Then why Mark, in the midst of the Bush second term, albeit while his approval numbers were falling at a rate that would have made Newton blush, did you change the name of your blog from Blogs for Bush to Blogs for Victory when it seemed clear to virtually everyone that the GOP was not going to pick up any seats in Congress?

  5. extramedium says:

    Mark,

No one can refute your personal admiration for Bush – we all have our heros and he’s yours. Your apparently growing hatred for Obama however, is pretty sickening to watch. I doubt very much that you would call him a “mindless drone” if you met him in person. It’s easy to deny his humanity and speculate about his motivations from your safe perch, isn’t it? I think you should pause and think about whether you actually hate a man you never met, or just disagree with his policies.

  6. guyincognito says:

    I don’t miss George W. Bush.

    I’d wager I’m not alone.

  7. freedomfromchange says:

So true, A. Can you image if The One did something even close to this? He’d have at least twenty press conferences reminding us that HE did it and how wonderful HE is. Blech.

“Under the Bush administration, more than 2 million people infected with HIV — most of them in Africa — have received lifesaving anti-retroviral treatment as part of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR.”

    Wow.

No one, except perhaps our resident libturds, can deny that President Bush did great things for the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

  8. observer20 says:

I personally think it is an act of cowardice and intellectual dishonesty to not recognize the good aspects of people, even if you disagree with them most of the time. This includes both Bush and Obama. Ignoring those very real facets of their existence is a cheap way for people to dehumanize those they disagree with so they can espouse their vitriolic hatred without a guilty conscience.

Bush did some stupid things that I disagreed with, but he also did some good.

Obama is doing many stupid things that I disagree with, but I can also see the good motivation behind some of his actions.

bush does deserve props for his africa initiatives & the libyan nuke disarmament.

  11. casper says:

I don’t remember anyone on this blog saying anything negative about Bush’s record with regard to the AIDS epidemic in Africa. It was definitely one of his better ideas.

  12. js02 says:

all these libtard replies…nothing but buttmunching rhetoric…they have no real reason to dislike bush…so they made them up and lied about it…

and now that he is gone…they slurp thier own ignorance like they actually proved a point…

    buttmunch rhetoric

This Sunday, August 9, 2009, Sean Hannity of FoxNews, is going to air a very important documentary about Barack Obama, Sunday night at 6:00 PM pacific / 9 PM eastern.

He stated on the air this evening that no one in the news media was willing to do this. Hannity is going back to Obama’s earlier days, showing even then his ties to radical professors, friends, spiritual advisers, etc. He stated this evening that he will show in detail Obama’s ties to Rev. Wright for 20+ yrs, how he was participating with this man, and not for the reasons he states! He has uncovered more of Obama’s radical leaders, and we will see things that no one in the media is willing to put out there. This will be a night that you will learn more about Obama than ever before. Hannity is very passionate about this program and asked that everyone please, please watch~~Sunday night, 6 PM PT; 9 PM ET

  14. freedomfromchange says:

Casper, it’s not what you write, it is where you write it that gives me that impression.

Take for example, extramedium. He/ states nothing about the good Bush did but strays from the topic of the thread. Note the irony in his final sentence. Gee, that sounds, oh so, familiar.

And then we have pain in the butt. Blah blah blah but nothing about the lives Bush saved from AIDS.

js: Someone else wrote about that another blog. The poster claimed to be a democrat who finally took off his BO blinders. He said he has stopped watching MSNBC altogether because they continually spout lies. (Wow … there is hope yet.)

In fact, on the many blogs that I lurk and post at, more and more dems are seeing the light and some even said they’d rather have President Bush back in office! If this trend continues, guyincognito may very well be alone.

I will be tuning in tonight to check it out. Should be very interesting.

The right to reproductive health care,…

It has nothing to do with “reproductive health,” moron. It’s abortion, plain and simple. You libs use it as a method of birth control, to justify your immoral behaviour.

    I don’t miss George W. Bush.

    I’d wager I’m not alone.

    Go figure–you’re a kook lib.

If only he had many more such bright spots on his record, but unfortunately, he does not.

Not in your warped view, he doesn’t. But go figure again–you’re a kook lib too. A poorly-educated one at that…

Just think you have three an a half more years of this to go!

  21. Mark Noonan says:

    pain,

Might as well ask who twisted the arms of people who OD; or people who become alcoholics. The answer, of course, is actually in your bathroom mirror – because you (and I) failed to show proper love for our fellows, some of them have fallen in to the despair which leads to physically self-destructive behavior resultant upon their spiritual collapse.

And, you ninny, we changed the blog name because it was time to get ready for the post-Bush political era. We were going to change it earlier, but we worried that some leftist dimwits would view it as an abandonment of President Bush…

  22. Mark Noonan says:

    extra,

I did think – or, more accurately, hoped – he had some intellectual heft. That although a liberal he had built up sufficient knowledge of real world affairs coupled with enough knowledge of history and philosophy to adjust what might be his ideal views with the realities of the moment.

I’ve been entirely disappointed in this hope – he’s a good looking guy who can read a teleprompter and nothing more as far as politics goes. He might, for all I know (and couldn’t care less about, as it is irrelevant to the situation) be the nicest guy in the whole, wide world…he’s certainly got two delightful daughters and he played a role in that…but he hasn’t the stuff in him of a President…heck, he hasn’t the stuff in him of a mildly successful State legislator…

  23. Mark Noonan says:

    Amazona,

He took what the left had to dish out, for 8 years, and never lost his temper – Obama is already losing it and he’s just 6 months in to it and still getting laudetory press coverage! Bush did, as I said, make some mistakes – in hindsight, his biggest mistake in my opinion was to do the UN dance with Saddam…we had full justification and should have liberated Iraq in August of 2002, before Saddam and the terrorists had a chance to plan a response to our invasion – but we could always rely on him to make a decision and go after his goal with determination coupled with flexibility of means.

Just a great President – one of our best. A century from now he’ll be rated with Lincoln and Reagan, I think.

Hey, I put up with wankers such as yourself since right before the ‘04 election, and ever since. Doesn’t bother me at all. And as for DA Earbama, well, that idiot can’t affect my happiness either. What a small person you are. Oh well, what should one expect from a phony?

Maybe you could ask Hannity how Hal Turner is doing in a federal 9 by 9 cell?

I think it’s about Earbama, orlandopehead.

Oh, it was painblochphony’s post? My bad; I thought orlandopehead was the only moron who played the “I know you are but what am I?” game. Gee, we have two juveniles who post here.

    I’d wager I’m not alone.

You’re never alone, guy. You’ve always got Mrs. Palm and her five lovely daughters.

Wow, orlandopehead, you must’ve really pissed Mark off. He has little tolerance for idol-worshipping fascist kooks, ya know?

Thanks, Mark; keep up the good work. Maybe orlandopehead will go away. Maybe back to school–one that will give him a proper education this time.

Yeah, ’cause only liberal woman have abortions, right luv2hate? Staying true to your name

No, bongsucker, I guess all abortions weren’t received by liberal women, but I’d wager that the vast majority were. And it’s all good; think of all those lemmings who never made it out of the womb alive. You were probably a failed abortion yourself, and look how you turned out. A lemming loon. A moron. A waste of oxygen.

Okay, painphony, come back at me with “3.5 more years,” or something more profound. Maybe you and orlandopehead could collaborate on something clever; he’s always good for a zinger or two…not!

Yes but in ‘04 you and Rush stayed in power and your joy of laughing at liberals as you drove to work rose in a mighty crescendo to break against the reality of the housing bubble. Ah, yes no rebuttal devolve to ad hominem and juvenile insults.

Yes, how patriotic censoship is. This reminds Us of city officilas all over the South who barred the showing of the films of Sindey Poitier well into the 1970s because such portrayals of a strong independant black man maight “cause riots” and “disrupt the Southern Way of Life.”

The vast majority of Americans being religious, white and conservative by your standards it is not very likely that the majority of abortions were performed on liberal atheists. By the way people on the Right who are bigots love to assign code words like “inner city” when they mean “where the blacks live” We are pleasantly surprised you could be so straighforward in your self worship. This is the first step toward realizing who you really are. Kudos!

ya cant get good fruit from that rotten tree…ya gotta rip it out and burn it…the bigotry and the lies are filled with darkness and hatred…it infects the very soil its planted in…even its ash carries nothing good for anyone…

“…the bigotry and the lies are filled with darkness and hatred…it infects the very soil its planted in…even its ash carries nothing good for anyone…”

What exactly were you saying about bigotry JS?

“,,,for 1400+ years, muslims have followed the koran…and been involved in the killing of hundreds of millions of human beings who refuse to become slaves to allah…they have kidnapped the children of thier enemies to use as soldiers to return the same children to thier homes to kill thier own families…”

    No bigotry there.

Hmmm…. What about Capitalizing words when it mentions first names, religions, etc. as a sign of respect? What about the Armenian Christian massacre? What about Christian Nationalists assisting the Nazis coming to power? What about your superior teachings that lead to the decimation of untold numbers of Native Americans? What about liberating several hundred thousand Iraqis of their lives (some estimates exceed 1 million) in the name of freedom?

    No bigotry there.

I’ve asked on this posting the definition of, “hypocrite”. Can you please post the definition of, “bigot”?

What about you other comments about Arabs? No bigotry there?

Once you claim moral superiority, you’ve only put yourself in the class of Stalin, Lenin, Pol Pot,etc.

I’m not perfect JS, never claimed to be. But, I’m sure God knows that although I do discriminate (how someone treats me, how I’m looked upon, etc.) that I don’t do so because of their race, gender, creed, etc.

    Can you say the same?
