Welcome to Lent. Time to give up a bit, and give a bit more:
Even now, says the LORD,
return to me with your whole heart,
with fasting, and weeping, and mourning;
Rend your hearts, not your garments,
and return to the LORD, your God.
For gracious and merciful is he,
slow to anger, rich in kindness,
and relenting in punishment.
Perhaps he will again relent
and leave behind him a blessing,
Offerings and libations
for the LORD, your God. – Joel 2:12-14
Even for non-Christians out there, it is good for one small part of the year – the next 40 days – to give up something and/or to go the extra mile for others. We really weren’t built to have lavish lives – a calm modesty and enough is enough is more what we’re geared for. Lent allows us a chance to do just that.
Just a small dose of humility can go a long way…
