Moammar Gaddafi has reportedly hired the services of hundreds of Tuaregs from the nation of Mali and Niger as mercenaries in Libya.
A BBC report stated that members of the Tuareg community in Mali confirmed that a large number of their fellow tribe journeyed to Libya in the past week to help Gaddafi fight protesters.
“About 200-300 have left in the last seven days,” said a senior elected Tuareg official from the Kidal region in northern Mali where many Tuareg live, according to BBC. “They are being paid about $10,000 to join up and then I’ve heard they are being told that they will get $1,000 a day to fight.”…
I’ve suspected this for a while – its hard to get soldiers to gun down their own and if Gaddafi is really determined to hold power, he’s going to need someone who won’t be squeamish about massacring Libyans. Foreigners willing to fight for pay would do the trick – and if he’s really offering $1,000.00 a day for killers, then he will never lack for troops, as long as the money doesn’t run out.
More than ever, this is the time for us to intervene – to demonstrate that $1,000.00 a day won’t do a corpse any good. The Libyans can clear out Gaddafi, but they probably won’t be able to withstand well armed men who simply don’t care who or how many they kill…but our forces in the area can provide the disincentive necessary to keep the mercenaries out. We just need the will to act.
