This is just one step too far – he’s gone entirely against America and is unfit to hold office. From Hot Air, regarding Sen. Graham’s comments about the Koran burning/Islamist riots issue:
…As for Graham, “I wish we could find some way to hold people accountable,” he laments, clearly deflated by the thought that the First Amendment applies even while we’re “at war.” And if you’re not sure what he means by “at war” — well, I’m not either. Are we “at war” only if troops are in the field? No Koran-burning, in other words, until the last U.S. serviceman has left Iraq and Afghanistan (and Libya)? Or are we “at war” as long as Al Qaeda and other anti-American jihadist movements exist, ready and willing to demagogue acts like Jones’s for their own uses? Even if all Islamist outfits in the world were eliminated, wouldn’t Graham want to continue the ban on Koran-burning lest it inspire new jihadist outfits to spring up? There’s no limiting principle to this idea, realistically. It’d end up being his own version of an “emergency law.”…
There should be no place in American government for a man who thinks that curbing free speech in response to enemy outrages is a good idea. This has nothing to do with Jones or the fact that he burned a Koran – as we know from the past, the Islamists will use anything which comes to hand to advance their pursuit of wealth and power (and that is what its all about – religion is just a mask for them; something used to cover up the fact that they are just out for themselves). During World War Two were we careful not to insult Hitler or Hirohito for fear that might make them madder at us?
What Jones did was wrong – as a religious man, I simply cannot agree that a person should desecrate another’s holy book. But I can also understand it – often a desire to deliberately insult Islam has come to my heart and mind, only suppressed as I realize that my Lord would not have me do it. But right or wrong, Jones as an American was perfectly within his rights to do as he pleases with a book he owns…it was his Koran and if he wanted to burn it, use it as a door stop, chop it up for mulch or whatever, it was his right to do it. And no government official should ever question the motivations of a non-violent act by an American citizen. As far as the government goes, it doesn’t matter why Jones did it…but here comes Lindsay Graham (with at least some support from Harry Reid) announcing that he wishes he could in some way sanction Jones for exercising both his property and free speech rights.
If other people around the world don’t like it, then that is just too bad. If they want to go on a murderous rampage because of it, then we should kill them for doing it. Decent, civilized human beings do not murder people because someone else did something physically harmless, even if it is gravely offensive. It is the duty of all those who defend civilization to support the right of a man to do as he pleases wit his own, as well as our duty to kill or otherwise render harmless anyone who would seek to do violence over such an act. Enough is enough of this – stop kowtowing to Islamists. Stop worrying about what barbarians will think.
