Is Obama Just Plain and Simple Stupid?

I was just flabbergasted to read this from the Daily Telegraph:

President Obama was effusive in his praise for the Special Relationship when he visited London recently, but his administration continues to slap Britain in the face over the highly sensitive Falklands issue. Washington signed on to a “draft declaration on the question of the Malvinas Islands” passed by unanimous consent by the General Assembly of the Organisation of American States (OAS) at its meeting in San Salvador yesterday, an issue which had been heavily pushed by Argentina. In doing so, the United States sided not only with Buenos Aires, but also with a number of anti-American regimes including Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela and Daniel Ortega’s Nicaragua.

The declaration calls for Argentina and Great Britain to enter into negotiations over the sovereignty of the Falklands, a position which London has long viewed as completely unacceptable…

And it is viewed as unacceptable because Argentina’s claim to the Falklands is absurd. Leaving aside conjecture that some South American Indians may have been there at some point, by the time the first Europeans – who were Dutch – sighted the islands they were uninhabited. Britain and France both established posts on the islands in the mid-18th century, which were later abandoned and the islands briefly came under Spanish rule…only to be abandoned, in turn, by Spain. A bit of back and forth – including a failed Argentine attempt to establish a presence on the islands – in the early 19th century finally wound up with a permanent, British settlement in 1834. From that time to this, with the exception of Argentina’s two month long occupation in 1982, the islands have been British. The people there are British. There is no connection between the islands and Argentina; none, nada, zilch, zip. To say there is an Argentine claim to the Falklands is absurd as saying there is a US claim to Newfoundland – simply because of proximity and at one time or another, an American had been there.

But here comes Barack Obama – with enemies to curry favor from and allies to insult. And we back a stupid and incendiary Argentine demand in conjunction with communist enemies in Venezuela and Nicaragua. Who the heck is in charge here? Does our President have any sense, at all? Is he trying to encourage the Argentines to have another go at it? What gain is there for us in playing up to the most stupid manifestation of Argentinian nationalism imaginable?

We’ve got wars – three or four of them, depending on how you reckon – all around the globe; we’ve got the Chinese getting aggressive; we’ve got Islamism on the march from Cairo to Damascus; we’ve got Iran a couple months away from a nuclear bomb; our economy is faltering; we’re heading for bankruptcy…and Obama figures it is time for us to stick our nose in to South American politics? Time to insult one of our oldest allies? Just how in heck did we wind up with this dimwit in the White House?

2012 cannot get here fast enough…

UPDATE: Here is the explanation – Argentina’s leftist President has been using Obamunism for years (and entirely wrecking the country in the process)…so, this may be just a bit of mutual admiration.
