Memorial Day Weekend Open Thread

Just a few of the ongoing stories shaping events as we head into this holiday weekend, where we celebrate the sacrifices of countless generations of selfless Americans to keep us safe and advance the cause of freedom around the globe.

Greece continues to slide toward oblivion with the masses complaining about losing government jobs and bennies and the people who should be footing a good portion of the bill, evading taxes in every conceivable way.  One of the main organizations shoring up the Greek economy is the International Monetary Fund — whose Managing Director has little sympathy for the Greeks.  Will the IMF and the EU continue to prop up the irresponsible Greeks or just let them implode.  What effect will either choice have on the EU and economies beyond Europe?

It looked as though Elizabeth Warren might easily unseat Scott Brown from Ted Kennedy’s old Senate seat until it came to light that Warren claimed to be part Cherokee Indian.

However, when Cornell Law School professor William A. Jacobson, citing a genealogist, announced “In what may be the ultimate and cruelest irony … it turns out that Warren’s great-great-great grandfather was a member of a militia unit which participated in the round-up of the Cherokees in the prelude to the Trail of Tears,” Warren’s candidacy began to implode.

On the scientific front, the privatization of space exploration has begun.

    This really is the perfect environment for those “oh so compassionate” liberals to really walk the walk, and I personally look forward to seeing them step up. California is headed towards bankruptcy at a rapid pace, yet the state enjoys a robust population of very wealthy liberal people – so wouldn’t you think that people like Sean Penn, Ashley Judd, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Tom Hanks, etc., etc, have calls into the Governor to financially assist in whatever amounts needed to assure that children continue their education, that seniors continue to enjoy their health benefits, that “undocumented” workers receive the financial assistance they need and that the poor and downtrodden are not victims of the budgetary constraints which are obviously the fault of George Bush?

    Surely this is happening as we speak, right? I can’t wait until we see the positive results those financially able, and concerned liberals can bring about all by themselves. It will surely warm the cockles of everyone’s heart.

      Custer, fortunately no one has made good on such threats — yet. As events unfold through the remainder of this year, I have a feeling we’ll start to see enraged Leftists go off the rails. You can almost feel the rage building, on talk radio, across the blogosphere and in letters to the editor. It’s probably a good thing that the Trayvon Martin case won’t go to trial for a while, but when Walker withstands the recall in Wisconsin and BHOzo gets his a$$ kicked from D.C. to Timbuktu in November, I have a feeling the dam is gonna burst, and decent people of all political stripes are gonna have a come-to-Jesus moment.

    Every year I call a friend who served in Korea and thank him for his service, and remember my best friend’s fiance, a medic who was killed carrying a wounded soldier off a hill in Viet Nam, and a Special Forces man I had been dating and was starting to consider a serious possibility for a future together before he was killed over there, along with two others in his group, whom I had come to know and like.

    We can never repay the debt we owe our military for their service and their sacrifice. I will never forget visiting the military cemetery near Normandy when we did a tour of the battlefields of that invasion a few years ago. I wonder how many history classes spend even one hour showing students photos of the military sites across the world where Americans lie, after defending freedom and our way of life. Just an hour, to show pictures of the thousands and thousands of crosses, the Viet Nam memorial in D.C., videos of flag-covered coffins being carried off airplanes.

        Let me spell it out for you Robin, since I have little faith in your ability to understand. Every gay person has the right to marry in every state just as I do – they have the right to marry any person of the opposite sex, just as I do, and they do not have the right to marry someone of the same sex, just as I don’t.

        Now if they want to marry someone of the same sex, that would be a special right – so lets call it for what it is. It’s not equal rights they want, it’s a special right that they want. Maybe if you were more honest about the issue, you would get more traction.

        But: She, and other braindead dupes like her, are hung up on a WORD. She whines and bleats about “equal rights”, she tries to trivialize actual civil rights by diminishing them to the level of a temper tantrum about being able to use a single word, she carries on with a variety of overheated rhetoric, but in reality she and her girlfriend can have equal status to that of married heterosexual couples.

        But that is not the issue. It never has been.

        The issue is one WORD. It is the word “marriage”.

        Nearly equal status is already available to all couples regardless of sexual orientation. Nearly all of the things strident gays are squealing about in the town square are already in place. Want inheritance “rights” ? Try this old-fashioned document called a “will”. Want property “rights”? Already in place, just put both names on the deed. Want the “right” of hospital visitation, and/or life and death decisions? We call that a “living will”. Want insurance companies to cover life partners? That is a contractual decision to be made by the companies, but if approached to do so I am sure some companies would like to snare this market. As a goal of many of us is to get health insurance out of the realm of employee benefits and into the control of the individual, this would be a contractual thing between people and their insurance companies. And if the Left could get its way, it would be a moot point as all health care would be equal.

        Really, equality to marriage only needs a minor tweak in the tax code, easily accomplished by legislation.

        No, the fuss has nothing to do with “rights” to anything but the use of one single WORD.

        And since the Left hates definitions, why not just use the word? Robin already applies her own bizarre definitions to words, and seems to think that just claiming that a word has a meaning makes it so.

        The ideal is a nation where people evaluate the different forms of government and then decide which of those forms they want to govern the nation, instead of merely voting on personal, emotional, NEEDS.

        The Left is completely dependent on the needs voter, as the Left can and does lay out quite alluring bait designed to appeal to the emotion-motivated and the self-interest types. Wow. “Fairness” and “Equality” and “Getting back at people who have more than you do” and best of all “Lots and lots of Other People’s Money”. It’s a heady mix of faux idealism, revenge, built-in bragging rights of moral superiority validation of personality disorders such as irrational hostility and antagonism, and profit with no effort.

        And once the bait is taken, the unthinking can be kept in the fold by constantly telling them how morally and intellectually superior they are, and how vile and thoroughly despicable the Other is.

        However, with the constant examples of the objective failures of this system, fewer and fewer people are just looking for a “…the political party that they think will best meet their needs..” and are more interested in a political system that is functional. While some emotional needs might be superficially met by the Left, the more serious needs, such as a functional economy, are sacrificed to meet those emotional needs. This is why ideology is taking a more and more prominent role in this electoral cycle.

        But there will be diehards, like Robin, whose emotional needs trump reason, truth and fairness, who are so deeply invested in the demonization of the Other that to give it up, to even take a peek behind the illusion set up by her minders, would just be too too threatening, Her comfort level is one of fantasy—-writing a “punishment” column for a newspaper based in Hell is only the beginning of her fantasy life, as it goes on to include an amazingly eeeeeevil Other that is just plain mean to “minorities” and which exists only in the feverswamp delusions of the Robins of the country.

        Robin is not only meanspirited and malicious, she is just plain dumb. For example, she bleats about these evil wicked not-a-single-redeeming-quality fantasy “conservatives” seeing POWER, while the system they support and promote is one designed to strip power from the elites and keep it distributed among the people.

    My wife and I DVR’d the Frank Luntz Pulse of America special Friday night and watched it tonight. The divide we face in this country was starkly reflected in the GOP vs. Dem graph that accompanied various aspects of the show. At one point a member of the audience asked why it is that after a major Congressional power shift in 2010 we still have gridlock in Congress. No one ever answered the question, and I turned to my wife and said, “that’s an easy one”.

    For most of my life Democrats and Republicans basically wanted the same thing, for the next generation to grow up at least as free and prosperous as that one before it. Most of the disagreement came on the how, not the what, and that always left room for compromise. Sometime over the last decade or so that changed. The two parties are near polar opposites, and there is almost no common ground on which to find compromise. While the Conservative movement began gradually shifting more and more toward smaller, more responsible/responsive, more accountable, more efficient, Constitutionally-oriented government, culminating in the Tea Party movement, the Progressive caucus of the Democrat Party made a violent left turn toward “fundamental transformation” of our Constitutional Republic into — well, I’m not sure exactly what, and hopefully we won’t get to find out.

      Spook, you’ve made an excellent point, in saying that for the most part all Americans have wanted pretty much the same things—-economic stability and prosperity, national security, compassion and caring for the very young and the very old and the truly needy, a bright future for the next generations. Our differences were not in our goals, but in how best to achieve them.

      And you are right in pointing out that this shared value system has changed, that we are now so polarized that the two opposing political systems (and we pause here for Dave to pitch a fit…..) do not seem to have the same goals in mind.

      It is my belief that many who are so stridently in opposition to the Right don’t really have an alternative—they are really really AGAINST, though against what they are not very clear, but don’t seem to be FOR anything other than an oddly vague and disjointed wish list of utopian dreams and fantasies.

      When I pointed out the absurdity of the platitude “Hope and Change” saying that the message was that any change would be better than what we had at the time, the Lib response was “You bet it would”. But that was as far as it went.

      It was just a kind of free-form amorphous dissatisfaction, with no real direction for improvement other than just general “Change”. And any effort to dig deeper into the nature and cause of this dissatisfaction came up with imaginary complaints, much like the strange disconnect we see here between reality and the accusations of those who support the Left.

      I can’t really call them Liberals, because they are not really Liberals. They don’t know what they are. Some call themselves Progressives, because it sounds so, well, progressive, but they don’t know what that means either. It always comes down to not really being FOR anything that can be explained in factual terms, but just this surly pushing back at some imagined foe.

      It’s not much of a recipe for success. But when those who DO have a clear, identifiable, definable, coherent idea of how they think the country should be run, who can explain and defend it, have the chance to try to bring the country back to that standard of government, they will be facing that same vague incoherent hostility.

        Amazona, another thing that strikes me about how the country has changed is that, growing up, I was always told that The Republican Party was the party of the wealthy and big business, and the Democratic Party was the party of the poor and the working man. That’s also no longer the case. Wealth has gravitated to the Democrat Party, particularly in the areas of entertainment, media and finance. Even in Congress, the wealth of Senate Democrats far exceeds the wealth of Senate Republicans.

        On the flip side, LBJ’s Great society and War on Poverty were supposed to end poverty, and, in fact, the poverty level during the 30 or so years after LBJ did decrease from around 17% to around 13%, In the last 10 years or so, however, as wealth shifted to the Democrats, those in power also discovered that the poor were an exploitable resource (goodies for votes). That’s actually been going on for more than 10 years, but it was never more prevalent than today. There’s an old saying — Reagan, I think — that if you want more of something, subsidize it, and voila, the percentage of Americans below the poverty level is back to almost 16%, barely below where it was many trillions of dollars ago.

        About 97.3 million Americans fall into a low-income category, commonly defined as those earning between 100 and 199 percent of the poverty level, based on a new supplemental measure by the Census Bureau that is designed to provide a fuller picture of poverty. Together with the 49.1 million* who fall below the poverty line and are counted as poor, they number 146.4 million, or 48 percent of the U.S. population. That is up by 4 million from 2009, the earliest numbers for the newly developed poverty measure.

        * 49.1 million divided by U.S. population of 312.8 million at end of 2011 (article is from December, 2011) = 15.7%

    I want to say a very special thank you to those families who have loved ones who’ve served in Iraq and Afghanistan, who paid the ultimate sacrifice, who gave all for our freedom. They are gone but Never forgotten!!

    And a special thank you to those currently serving in Afghanistan and Iraq, you serve selflessly of your time, to defend our freedom!! Thank You so very much!! Words cannot express the gratitude that you are owed!!

    A special thank you to our many Veterans, POW’s, and MIA!!! Thank you for your service to our country, what an honor it is to have men and women of your courage, who tread on the minefields, and sacrifice life and limb for us!! What an honor!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!

    Whether Coast Guard, Navy, Airmen, Army or Marines…you are there to serve us, and keep us safe from our enemies….keep ol’ Glory flying high. You are those who gave, and give us the reputation of being “Land of the free, and home of the brave!!”

    I meant to do this yesterday, but was in a war movie marathon yesterday with my sons. We watch war movies every Memorial Day to remind us what these brave men and women did to protect our freedoms, keep this country safe and protect others when possible.

    My family and I want to wish all veterans a happy Memorial Day and thank you for your personal sacrifice and service.
