Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death

…This is no time for ceremony. The question before the House is one of awful moment to this country. For my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery; and in proportion to the magnitude of the subject ought to be the freedom of the debate. It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfil the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offence, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the majesty of heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings.

Mr. President, it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and, having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it.

I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided; and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging of the future but by the past. And judging by the past, I wish to know what there has been in the conduct of the British ministry for the last ten years, to justify those hopes with which gentlemen have been pleased to solace themselves, and the House? Is it that insidious smile with which our petition has been lately received? Trust it not, sir; it will prove a snare to your feet. Suffer not yourselves to be betrayed with a kiss. Ask yourselves how this gracious reception of our petition comports with these war-like preparations which cover our waters and darken our land. Are fleets and armies necessary to a work of love and reconciliation? Have we shown ourselves so unwilling to be reconciled, that force must be called in to win back our love? Let us not deceive ourselves, sir. These are the implements of war and subjugation; the last arguments to which kings resort. I ask, gentlemen, sir, what means this martial array, if its purpose be not to force us to submission? Can gentlemen assign any other possible motive for it? Has Great Britain any enemy, in this quarter of the world, to call for all this accumulation of navies and armies? No, sir, she has none. They are meant for us; they can be meant for no other. They are sent over to bind and rivet upon us those chains which the British ministry have been so long forging. And what have we to oppose to them? Shall we try argument? Sir, we have been trying that for the last ten years. Have we anything new to offer upon the subject? Nothing. We have held the subject up in every light of which it is capable; but it has been all in vain. Shall we resort to entreaty and humble supplication? What terms shall we find which have not been already exhausted? Let us not, I beseech you, sir, deceive ourselves. Sir, we have done everything that could be done, to avert the storm which is now coming on. We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the throne, and have implored its interposition to arrest the tyrannical hands of the ministry and Parliament. Our petitions have been slighted; our remonstrances have produced additional violence and insult; our supplications have been disregarded; and we have been spurned, with contempt, from the foot of the throne. In vain, after these things, may we indulge the fond hope of peace and reconciliation. There is no longer any room for hope. If we wish to be free if we mean to preserve inviolate those inestimable privileges for which we have been so long contending if we mean not basely to abandon the noble struggle in which we have been so long engaged, and which we have pledged ourselves never to abandon until the glorious object of our contest shall be obtained, we must fight! I repeat it, sir, we must fight! An appeal to arms and to the God of Hosts is all that is left us!

They tell us, sir, that we are weak; unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house? Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance, by lying supinely on our backs, and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot? Sir, we are not weak if we make a proper use of those means which the God of nature hath placed in our power. Three millions of people, armed in the holy cause of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are invincible by any force which our enemy can send against us. Besides, sir, we shall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations; and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us. The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave. Besides, sir, we have no election. If we were base enough to desire it, it is now too late to retire from the contest. There is no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chains are forged! Their clanking may be heard on the plains of Boston! The war is inevitable and let it come! I repeat it, sir, let it come.

It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!

        Neither Corporations Nor Unions are people…..however, the first amendment gives people that own corporations or people that are members of unions, the right to assemble for the purpose of political free speech.

        That means that the corporations can be the vehicle for it’s owners to spend money on political campaigns, just as the union can be the vehicle for it’s members to spend on campaigns.

There is no question that Obama is black, and he reminds us of that everyday, as do you and the media, so my question to you regarding that is why is that so important to you and to him? You do remember that Obama is half white, so if you claim that this it is his race that conservatives hate, wouldn’t they hate just half of him? And why isn’t his white heritage ever mentioned, with the exception of Obama calling his grandmother a typical white person? It seems to me that you, he and the media are much more obsessed with race than anyone else.

        Secondly, neocon is right in pointing out the racism that is so historically ingrained in the democratic party, you just take exception with it because it doesn’t fit your world view that has been so carefully fed to you. The vast majority of people with Faith don’t even take into account the color of someone’s skin, with the exception of Islam, which of course you refrain from commenting on because you and they share common beliefs.

        My assertion is that liberals need a mother figure in their life to protect them from people who are smarter and more successful and to take away their irrational fear of failure. Hence Obama. Hillary Clinton was the choice prior to Obama, but unfortunately for Hillary, Obama proved to be more a feminine figure.

    Even more fascinating that I throw out two facts: Romney profited from abortions, and Patrick Henry hated corporations, and the respond is a barrage of personal insults and political platitudes.

    I’ve always assumed that our Founding Fathers’ bias against “taxation without representation” meant they were equally against East India Co.’s “representation without taxation,” an equally unfair situation we seem to be in now, with billion dollar corporations enjoying the benefits of our political process without paying for it – well, they are buying politicians I s’pose…

    You must all be ok with Romney being an actual abortion services provider as long as he profited from it. I hadn’t realized you were against socialized abortions, but capitalist ones were just fine.

        Seeing how all hospitals, medical clinics, medical labotories, dental clinics and imaging centers need to have medical waste removed and treated, then Romney has supported infant health, fought cancer of all types, suppored cures for HIV and other illnesses, promoted general health as well as fighing tooth decay.         That’s a tricky question. If no one contracts to dispose of abortions, a very necessary requirement for medical facilities to provide, would they have to postpone procedures? Maybe or maybe not.

        What if Romney contracted to remove medical waste on the condition that no fertilized human embryos be among the waste. Would that tie the hands of Planned Parenthood? Maybe not, but it would certainly send a loud message, and could result in uncomfortable press that I would think conservatives would welcome.

        But nope. Romney was happy to irradiate and then toss human life into a landfill for cash. Not to worry, though. Mormons can save souls AFTER they die – even Jews and embryos, so all’s well that ends well, right?

        Re: the bail out, do you at all recall what was going on in Dec of 2008? Obama was marching around with his made up emblem of “Office of the President Elect” (what a joke), and that rocket scientist Nancy Pelosi was running the house and both of them were strong advocates for the bail out – not that that little fact fits your “blame Bush” narrative so my apologies for bringing that up.

        But in what you call your mind, I suppose you’re right. After all, democrats are paragons of virtue, selflessly looking to take care of you and protect you from those evil republicans. You can sleep well tonight.

        Hmmm, you don’t seem to know what “executive order” means.Surprising given the recent Obama use of it. When Bush bailed out GM by executive order on December 19, 2008, he didn’t need permission from Pelosi or anyone else.

        I’ve personally never considered Obama to be the smartest yada yada. He thought he could actually win conservatives over by compromising on important legislation, even incorporating their ideas like cap n trade and that mandate thing. What an idiot.     Corporations have limits to association in the form of anti-trust legislation and unions are not allowed to show support for one another with wildcat strikes. One Roosevelt severely limited the unions another limited corporations. Neither structure is a person and both should be prohibited from taking member/shareholder money and using it in elections. Both are robbing the minority stake members of money by a tyranny of the majority or the bosses knowing that they control the strings independent of the rank and file.

      You wil need to take your complaint up with the DNC in regards to unions because currently that is the where the a large chunk of contributions come from, whether the members like it or not. Ironically, when given the choice, people chose to leave the union in large numbers in WI, so evidently they did object to how their money was spent.

      In re: to slavery, I should point out that many of our founding fathers found the practice of slavery to be quite detestable, as I a, sure you are aware of being a member of a higer educational institution, so why didn’t you mention that? Does that fact mot set well with you? Also, the countries that we acquired the slaves from, practiced slavery as well, against their own race, and many Islamic countries today practice a soft form of slavery in the way they treat their women. So considering that you are enjoying the comforts and freedom of a country established by white men of Faith, I will pose the same question to you that I did to Robin, and that is – how many countries established by black and brown men would afford you the same opportunity?

        It is a geographic coincidence is all that ties the foundation of this country to a color of skin. If a more contiguous land mass was spread near the equator then black freedom lovers would have founded the equivalent of the USA.

        What is not fine if I am compelled to belong to a union and don’t want my $ given to the democrats.     Have we seen one single discussion effort from any of these dupes regarding Romney’s ideas for how to govern the nation? No, we get silliness like the fact that his father was born in Mexico or his grandfather had more than one wife. We get toxic sludge like running an investment company which once invested in a company which probably disposed of aborted children along with other medical waste is an indictment, not of the company itself, or its management, but of its INVESTORS. We hear how inhumane it was to carry his dog in a protected and secured carrier on top of his car. We see sniping at his wife for riding horses. They argue that Mitt Romney supports abortion because a company he ran invested in a company that disposed of medical waste from hospitals and clinics that may have included the bodies of babies butchered by people they support in their brutality. THIS IS ALL THEY’VE GOT.

    And by the way, medical waste is dangerous, on many levels. Safely disposing of it is a public service.
